(2022秋·广东深圳·七年级校联考期中)Dear headmaster,
Lately, our class has become worried about the environment at the back of the school, and we would like to do something to make it more attractive. We have done some research and have come up with a plan. With the help of our parents, we can do most of the work ourselves, but we will need a small amount of money for equipment, plants and paint. I am writing to ask the council (委员会) for permission to do this work and to ask if the school council could donate (捐赠) $500 towards our project.
We would like to turn the empty land at the back of the school into a nature garden. We would plant trees and grasses, make paths through the garden and dig a small pond. We think this would provide a peaceful place for students and teachers to walk in. It would also attract birds, insects and small animals which students could then study in science classes. We would also like to paint the back wall of the school that faces the new garden. Some of our art classes could then paint a huge picture on it. It might be possible to paint over the wall each year so the next classes can make a new picture.
Lastly, we would like to paint all the rubbish bins. At the moment they look old and the paint is coming off. If we paint them in bright, attractive colours, students might be more likely to use them. We think our plan would greatly improve the back of the school and everyone in the school would benefit. We have already asked our parents and they have promised to donate one weekend of their time to help us complete the project.
We hope you will give us permission for this worthwhile project. When we have finished the work, we hope the council will join us in a celebration morning tea so that the whole school can thank you.

(2022春·广东广州·七年级校联考期中)Paul and Jason were brothers who lived and worked on neighbouring farms. For 35 years they farmed together and shared the things they needed. They never had any problems.
However, one autumn, things changed. It began with a small disagreement about a horse. Paul wanted to sell the horse. But Jason wished to keep it. They said some angry words and shouted at each other. From then on, they hadn’t talked to each other for several weeks.
One morning, there was a knock on Paul’s door. He opened it and saw a builder holding his toolbox (工具箱). “I’m looking for a few days’ work.” the builder said. “Are there any jobs I could help with?” “Yes.” answered Paul. He was very happy to see the builder. “I do have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek (小溪). That’s my brother’s farm. That creek was a grass field before, but last week my brother made the creek. Now, I want you to build me a fence (栅栏), two metres tall, so I won’t need to see him anymore.”
The builder said thoughtfully, “I think I’ll be able to do a job that makes you happy.” Paul had business in town that day and left the builder to his work. When he returned, the builder had just finished his job. Paul was surprised. The builder didn’t build a fence, but he built a bridge from one side of the creek to the other.
As Paul stood on the bridge, his younger brother Jason came and took Paul’s hand. “You are a good man to have built this bridge after all I’ve done,” said Jason. Then, Paul, with tears in his eyes, said to the builder who was to leave, “Thank you so much. Please stay. I have much more for you to do.”
“I’d love to,” The builder said quickly, “but, I have many more bridges to build.”

(2022秋·广东广州·七年级校考期中)“Never set foot in this house again!” shouted father. “BANG” the door closed behind me. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing a rather sad-feeling. I wandered aimlessly.
A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now…I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differ in our ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I wandered the streets, without any aim in my mind. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people on the streets. When I finally reached the apartment where I lived, I saw that the light was still on. I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?” In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except father’s.
Dad was always like this. He has got used to arguing with me. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never said sorry to me. But after an argument, he always came into my room secretly and made sure whether I was asleep.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe…With the key in hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love is second to none.
