On a hot summer day in 2017, 9-year-old Hayli Martenez set up a lemonade stand outside her home in Kankakee, Illinois. She thought it would be a great way to earn money for college. Hayli's lemonade stand was a success. In June 2019, a local newspaper wrote an article about her.
But the news coverage turned out to be bad for Hayli's business. Officials from the local health department soon demanded that she shut it down. They said Hayli needed a permit for her lemonade stand and that it didn't meet health code requirements. Although Hayli thought it was unfair to prevent a kid from selling lemonade in her front yard, she had no choice but to stop.
News of Hayli's shutdown spread and caught the attention of an official in the county government. Inspired by Hayli's story, he came up with a bill, which would make it easier for kids to run lemonade stands. He invited Hayli to speak in support of the bill to a committee of state senators（参议员）in March 2021.
Although Hayli was excited to get the chance to tell her story, she was worried about addressing the group of senators. She was jittery at first. Her voice started to shake and she talked too fast, running out of breath. But Hayli quickly gained confidence when she remembered who she was there to represent.
Hayli's speech was convincing, and the bill eventually passed. Last July, the bill came into law. Hayli's Law officially went into effect on January I of this year. It allows kids under 16 in Illinois to sell lemonade and other drinks without a permit. Hayli was back in business and sold her lemonade again this summer. Despite many public health campaigns to highlight various problems with sugary drinks, we drink them a lot. But, not everyone consumes them. Two new studies shed light on the fact that some of us easily fall victim to the harms of sugary drinks than others.
C Though sugary drinks are everywhere, some people find them harder to resist and the first study, conducted by professor Joshua McGreen at Flinders University, sought to understand why. For the research, 128 young adults of 17 to 25 completed a computer test evaluating their attitudes about soft drinks, measured against their soft drink consumption. The study showed that the more unconscious positive judgments individuals had of soft drink advertising, the more soft drink they consumed. It also found that a lack of inhibitory control, which is the cognitive process that allows us to control our desires — say, to buy a nice-tasting soft drink even though we know it's unhealthy — was also a factor in increased consumption.
A second study provides clues about who is more easily influenced by the marketing strategies. The study found that soft drink companies, like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, have multi-billion dollar advertising and marketing budgets aimed to "create, maintain and increase consumer demand around benefits related to happiness, social status etc." These campaigns are "increasingly being directed at disadvantaged groups", including children and adolescents generally.
Soft drinks, even "zero-sugar"ones, are typically high in calories, but of little nutritional benefit. Placing a tax on sweet drinks may be one strategy to reduce people's consumption. McGreen also suggests that people develop strong self-control of soft drink consumption. It's something he wants to research further.

Billionaire Sir Christopher Hohn expects the greatest "demand disruption（中断）”for oil since the 1970s shock to cause an increase in renewable energy investment.
He said high oil prices are“a positive thing”for the climate as the energy crisis results in a "dramatic speed-up” in decarbonisation（碳减排）. "The whole world should now be focused on seeking alternatives, whether they're renewables or hydrogen fuels. All of these things are far more economic."
He pointed to the recent boost of EU（欧盟）for renewable energy funding, as part of a plan to reduce imports of gas. Even as oil and gas companies obtain record profits from the high prices at present, Hohn said climate-focused investors will ultimately benefit from the energy price shock.
"The oil price increase leads to plans for accelerated decarbonisation,” said Hohn. "I personally believe that we'll have demand disruption as we had in the 70s, and that there will be a dramatic acceleration in decarbonisation. I actually view it as a positive thing."
Hohn has pressured companies to give shareholders a vote on their climate plans. Spanish airport operator Aena and aircraft manufacturer Airbus improved their emissions（排放）tar-gets as a result. Hohn has also pushed for stricter regulation on corporate climate promises. "Corporate decarbonisation isn't going to happen through voluntary methods,” Hohn said.
Investors often struggle to analyze corporate climate plans. "Because though some organizations declare their commitment to environmental protection, they actually do the opposite,” Hohn said, "I expect a large proportion of companies will get graded F if they're not doing enough. Even companies with net zero emissions targets have failed to set out plans about how to reach those goals. The impact is going to be a bit like, 'the emperor has no clothes'."

A green fashion show
To promote the awareness of environmental protection among students, an impressive green fashion show was held in our school hall at 7:00 pm last Saturday.

M: Charlie Chaplin was an English comic actor, filmmaker and composer, who earned fame in the silent era. He is most famous for his on-screen character “The Little Tramp”. ⑱Born on April 16th, 1889 in London, Chaplin is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry. Chaplin’s first performance was at a music hall as a stage actor and comedian at the age of 19. ⑲He went to the USA and began appearing at Keystone Studios in 1914. He soon developed the Tramp character and formed a large fan base. In 1919, Chaplin co-founded a distribution company United Artists, which gave him complete control over his films. ⑳His first feature-length film was The Kid (1921), followed by A Woman of Paris (1923), The Gold Rush (1925), and The Circus (1928). Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, edited, starred in and composed the music for most of his films. He had been productive and creative for about 75 years before he died in 1977.
