    Teaching aims:

    1.Enable students to identify the features and reasons of a city that has diverse cultures.

    2.Enable students to figure out the main structure of the passage by classifying and organising the key information.

    3.Help students to voice their personal opinions about the reasons for cultural diversity and its benefits and challenges.

    4.Guide students to determine the authors feelings and attitudes.

    Teaching key points:

    1.Identify the features and reasons of diverse cultures.

    2.Figure out the main structure of the passage by classifying and organising the key information.

    Teaching difficult points:

    1.Determine the authors feelings and attitudes.

    2.Express their personal ideas about the reasons for cultural diversity and its benefits and challenges.

    Teaching procedures:

    StepⅠPre-reading

    1.Ask students to read the map of America and locate the following place:Mississippi River,Rocky Mountains,Pacific Ocean,Atlantic Ocean,Canada,and Mexico.

    2.Ask students to locate California and San Francisco.Answer the following question.

    What do you know about San Francisco of California?

    Suggested answers:

    San Francisco is a city in California on the West Coast of the US.It is famous for its Chinatown and its sports teams.

    StepⅡWhile-reading

    Activity1Reading for main idea

    Ask students to have a quick look at the format,the pictures and the passage and answer the following questions.

    1.What type of text do you think it is?                

    A.Diary. B.Travel journal.

    C.News report. D.Travel guide.

    2.Where did she go for her trip?

    3.What is her travel plan? Find out the places that she has been to or plans to visit.

    Suggested answers:

    Activity2 Reading for structure

    Ask students to determine the order that the text is written in by focusing on the information about time.After that,complete the timeline of Li Lans trip.

    What order is the text written in?

    Classify and organise information

    We can better understand a passage by classifying or organising the information in it.Classifying means deciding the kind of information, e.g. dates, numbers, opinions. Organising means putting things in order, e.g. according to how old, how much, what kind. Sometimes it is a good idea to draw a diagram to organise the information in the passage.

    Suggested answers:

    The text is written in time order.(Para.1:Today...;Para.3:In the afternoon;Para.4:This evening;Para.5:Tomorrow evening)

    Activity3 Reading for detailsfacts

    Ask students to answer the following questions using information from the travel journal.

    1.What impressed the writer first about San Francisco?

    2.What is so special about the Mission District?

    3.Why did Chinese immigrants go to San Francisco?

    4.What examples of ethnic diversity can you find in the journal? Try to present it in a mind map.

    Suggested answers:

    1.The beautiful old buildings,many sitting on top of big hills.

    2.The Mission District is a vibrant,historical area full of culture and life.

    3.To seek their fortune in the gold rush.

    Ask students to discuss these questions in groups.

    1.Have you ever been to a place that has a diverse culture? What do you think brought about the cultural diversity?

    2.What are the benefits and challenges of cultural diversity?

    Suggested answers:

    1.One culturally diverse place that I have been to is Harbin,the capital city of Heilongjiang Province.I went there last year with my family to see the Ice and Snow Festival,and I was amazed at how the culture as different to most other Chinese cities.There is a big Russian influence there,with beautiful Russian architecture and lots of interesting restaurants.I learnt that Harbin is calledthe Oriental Moscowand that many Russians settled there to help build the railway over 100 years ago.

    2.The benefits:

    Experience a wide variety of cultures,

    making their lives more interesting;personal growth(cultural awareness,intercultural communication,cooperation);more open-minded society.

    The challenges:

    Misunderstanding across languages and cultures;Conflicting values and lifestyles;Unconscious cultural biases (偏见).

    StepⅣ Homework

    Look up more information about the advantages and disadvantages of cultural diversity.Write a report and present it next period.
