Unit 1 It might snow.

 1. Are you joking? 你在开玩笑吗？

【知识点1】Are you joking?

这是口语中常用的表达方式，意为“你在开玩笑吧？”，表示说话人对对方所说的话感到惊讶和不相信。

【知识点2】joke

①动词，说笑话，开玩笑，joke with sb.

☞Don’t get mad. I was only joking.

别生气，我只是在开玩笑。

②名词，笑话；玩笑，tell jokes/a joke讲笑话

☞She told us some very funny jokes.

她给我们讲了一些非常滑稽的笑话。

2. Is it snowy in England in December?

英国十二月下雪吗？

【知识点】snowy

形容词，多雪的，下雪的。名词是snow,意为“雪”；动词形式是snow,意为“下雪”。

☞If it’s snow, you should stay indoors.

如果下雪，你应该呆在室内。

是询问天气情况的常用句型，也可以用“How is the weather?”询问天气，二者可以互换，意为天气怎么样？，其后可以加时间表示某个时间的天气怎么样。

①V. 祝愿，常用于wish sb. n./adj. 表示祝愿某人

他想当演员的愿望实现了。

4. Not usually，although this year it snowed quite a lot. 不经常下，尽管今年下了相当多的雪。

【知识点】although

although = though  conj. 然而; 尽管, 引导的从句不能与 but, however 连用, 但可与 yet, still 连用。

5. Come on, better get going! 快点，走吧。

 【知识点】better get going

better get going 是 we’d better get going 的省略形式, 意思是“最好现在去/ 走”。

☞We’d better get going (= We’d better go now),  or we’ll be late.            

我们最好现在就走，不然要迟到了。

6. It’s probably sunny and hot there. 那里的天气可能晴朗而炎热。

  【知识点】probably

 adv. 大概; 或许; 很可能

英语中表示可能的方式有许多，除使用情态动词may / might 以外，还可以通过will 以及表示“可能” 的形容词和副词表达。

常用的有：

It is possible to do sth. ...

It is possible that …

主语 + will probably / possibly + v. …

☞Is it possible to visit Alaska in December?

十二月去阿拉斯加游览有可能吗？

It is possible that it’ll be snowy in the night.

晚上有可能会下雪。

It’ll probably be cold and wet.

天气很可能会又湿又冷。

注: probably 表示“很可能”，所以表示的可能性要比 possible 大。

Sadness and happiness are often talked about by people in their spare time. Most people want themselves to be happy for ever, but few know how to find happiness. Others say if you own lots of money and success, you will be happy. However, money and success alone do notbring lasting happiness. A famous a Greek thinker, Aristotle, said, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” That’s to say,we make our own happiness. Here are a few suggestions to help you be happier.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much timethinking about the future. For example, getting into college or getting a good job, which we fail to enjoy thepresent. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.

Another secret to living a happy life is to be active. Many people go dancing or play sports. People can forget about their problems and only think about the activities. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others.     

Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping or help out with some things around the house for an elderly person.
