When Emily Cummins was four years old, her grandfather gave her a hammer (锤子). She loved using it, and started to learn how to make toys from old things.
When she was a teenager, she thought a lot about making something to help other people. Emily's other grandfather got an illness and had a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had problems getting toothpaste out of the tube (软管). She made an invention that helped him with this, and won a prize for her toothpaste dispenser (自动取物器).
A few years later, Emily learnt about the situation in some African countries where people often walked many kilometers a day to get water. They could only carry one bucket (桶) at a time, and they usually put the bucket on their head. Emily's invention is a simple water carrier. The "wheel" on the water carrier is made of wood, so it's easy to repair. It makes it possible for people to transport up to five buckets each time. They don't have to carry the bucket on their head.
Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity using only the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia and South Africa that use it to keep milk, food and medicine cool.
Emily often visits schools and talks to teenagers. She wants to encourage them to come up with new ideas that make the world a better place. She isn't interested in making a bigger TV or a better sound system. She wants to create a change for the better.

No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of the kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. Han Xin, the leader of an army, wanted to bring down a king. He decided to dig a tunnel (隧道) into the king's palace. He flew a kite over the wall of the palace to make sure of the length of its string. In this way, he could determine how long the tunnel should be. His men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string, they knew they should start to dig.
Kites have been flown in Japan for many years. In the past, kites were flown in autumn to give thanks for a good harvest. They were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had their first son. Today in Japan, kites are often flown as part of a celebration. And kite festivals are held each year in many parts of the country.
Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the Western world. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin tied a key to a kite and flew it in a storm to find out that lightning was a form of electricity. In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite to test ideas about flight. From 1898 until 1933, the United States Weather Bureau (气象局 )used box kites to collect weather data. The Wright brothers also experimented with kites. What they learned helped them achieve the first airplane flight in 1903.
( )35.Why did Han Xin want to dig a tunnel?
A. To pull down the palace.
B. To fight against the king.
C. To search for the king's treasure.
D. To find out the length of the string of the kite.
( )36.What does the underlined word "determine" in Paragraph 1 probably mean in Chinese?
A. 测定 B. 选择 C. 了解 D. 考察

E(2023·浙江余姚一模改编)
The biggest secret about invention is that anybody can do it! Perhaps this sounds crazy, but it's true. Maybe you have the wrong idea about invention, so read on to discover the truth.
★Wrong idea 1: An invention has to be something completely new.
Invention means creating something "new", but the idea could come from something that is already there.Take Wright brothers for example. They got the idea of building a "flying machine" from watching birds.
★Wrong idea 2:Inventions are born, not made.
There are a lot of factors (因素)that make invention possible. Take Mozart for example. He was born with a musical talent. But other factors were also important for his creativity. His father was a music teacher, and Mozart practiced for hours every day from the age of four. Thomas Edison said that being an inventor was "99% hard work and 1% inspiration" !
Very successful creators don't give up when they get something wrong. As Robert Stevenson said, "In order to succeed, you must fail,so that you know what not to do next time."
★Wrong idea 3: Inventors are always old people.
Don't believe that you can't invent anything when you are young. Here are two examples of young inventors:Louis Braille went blind when he was a child. When he was fifteen, he invented a system of reading and writing for blind people that is still used in most countries today.
As a young man, George Nissen was watching some artists performing in a show. He watched how they fell into the safety net and then jumped back up again. This gave him an idea, and he invented the trampoline (蹦床).

The computer is one of the most important inventions. It has greatly changed people's lives. We use computers in schools, families and offices. With the help of the computer, our lives become more convenient, comfortable and colorful. But the computer also has disadvantages and it has caused some social problems. Many children like playing computer games so much that they can't get away from them. Thieves can steal money on the Internet easily.
So we should control ourselves, not spend too much time on the Internet chatting or computer games and not always believe the information you see on the Internet.
All in all, I think we should use the computer wisely and make it serve us better.
