第二部分 阅读(共两节, 满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Four Places Named After Scientists in Antarctica
There are many scientific breakthroughs made by women in Antarctic. Here are four landmarks in Antarctica and the female pioneers they’re named for.
Jones Terrace (梯田)
The ice-free terrace in eastern Antarctica’s Victoria Land bears Jones’ name. In 1969, geochemist Lois M. Jones led the first all-female research team from the U.S. to work in Antarctica. Jones and her team studied chemical weathering in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, an ice-free area of Antarctica. Through chemical analyses of rocks they had collected, Jones and her team discovered many geochemical characteristics of the valley’s ice-covered lakes.
Mount Fiennes
8,202-foot-high Mount Fiennes, located on Antarctica’s largest island — Alexander Island — is named for Ginny Fiennes. She established and maintained 80-foot-tall radio towers in the Antarctic. In 1985, Fiennes became the first female who was invited to join the Antarctic Club, a British supper club open to individuals who have spent extended time in the Antarctic region.
Francis Peak
The 3,727-foot-tall peak on Antarctica’s Adelaide Island is named after Dame Jane Francis, who is the first female director of the British Antarctic Survey, the national polar research institute of the UK. Her collection of fossils on Seymour Island helped conclude in a 2021 paper that Antarctica’s abundant plant fossils indicate the continent once had a much warmer climate than it currently does.
Peden Cliffs
Peden Cliffs near Antarctica’s Marie Byrd Land are proof of the labor of Irene Peden. She was the first American female scientist to both live and work in the Antarctic, where she used radio waves to study ice sheets. Peden and her team determined how very low frequency radio waves spread over long polar distances by measuring pathways in the ice. They also used varying radio wave frequencies to measure the thickness of Antarctica’s ice sheets.
21. Which place is named after a builder of radio towers in the Antarctic?
A. Jones Terrace. B. Mount Fiennes.
C. Francis Peak. D. Peden Cliffs.
22. Who proved the previous higher temperatures of the Antarctic?
A. Lois M. Jones. B. Ginny Fiennes.
C. Dame Jane Francis. D. Irene Peden.
23. What is special about Irene Peden?
A. She could judge the thickness of Antarctica’s ice sheets.
B. She discovered a lot of ice-covered lakes in the Antarctic.
C. She was the first female American to explore the Antarctic.
D. She correctly measured the spreading speed of radio waves.
B
My neighbors across the street take pride in one of the most striking trees in the neighborhood—a towering oak that is over 75 years old. This year, after a wet, warm summer, leaves were a bit different in my Massachusetts town. And through some combination of events, that glorious oak seemed to have dropped all of its uncountable leaves on a single windy day. I arrived at home that afternoon to find our front walkway, driveway and sidewalk completely blanketed.
My son and I had a great time making a leaf pile for jumping and enjoying pillowy fun. The whole time, I was fascinated by the speed of this year’s leaf drop. Even though I was aware that it was an accident of wind patterns that left all the leaves in our yard, I kept looking up and feeling a rush of awe at the suddenly bare branches that watched quietly over our neighborhood, starting its restful season before setting spring leaf buds.
And I felt thankful for those fallen leaves as I was reminded of my favorite quote from the author and naturalist Hal Borland. He wrote it referencing October, but this year’s later drop had me change the month: “November is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations(星座) above them once again. ”
When I lay in that pile of dry, crisp leaves and looked up into the oak tree across the street, I felt a clarity and peace that comes along with the inconveniently early sunsets and chilly temperatures of the transition from fall into winter. I could still admire the tree as I had in spring and summer, but I could also see through it, beyond it, to the big sky that blankets us all.
24. What’s unusual this year?
A. Outdoor activities are limited due to heavy winds.
B. A series of special events happened in the neighborhood.
C. The weather is especially cold in winter in Massachusetts.
D. The neighbors’ big tree almost dropped all its leaves within a day.
25. How does the author feel at the suddenly bare branches in Paragraph 2?
A. Anxious. B. Sorrowful. C. Comfortable. D. Amazed.
26. Why are Hal Borland’s lines quoted in Paragraph 3?
A. To express the author’s admiration for the naturalist.
B. To emphasize the importance of getting close to nature.
C. To express the author’s feelings about the leaf-falling season.
D. To emphasize the beauty of the author’s childhood memories.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Sky Far Beyond B. The Fall of Massachusetts
C. The Beauty of a Newly-bare Tree D. The Memories of Peace and Beauty
C
I need a new phone. Like many of us with older model iPhones, my battery life is just a few hours and I’ve stopped updating the operating system to extend the phone’s life. But I’m having a tough time making the final decision. It’s not the cost. It’s not the inconvenience either. It’s the environment.
Making smartphones, laptops, and other tech products takes a lot of resources. This is partly due to the carbon emissions from the producing process. Still, the most negative impact comes from the mining of the rare earth metals that make your phone work. If you’re reading this on your phone right now, you’re holding about 0.034 grams of gold, 0.34 grams of silver, and smaller amounts of other rare elements. These are tiny amounts, but consider the demand for smartphones around the world.
All of these rare elements have to be mined from inside the Earth, in places like China and some African countries. Mining is hugely environmentally destructive: forests are destroyed, the ground is disturbed, and water quality in the area takes a dive.
Now take these environmental risks, and combine them with the fact that the average lifespan (使用寿命) of a smartphone is just two years, the length of your contract with your cell phone company. After that, if you’re lucky, you get a “free” upgrade. Awesome, right? Sure, if you ignore the fact that the environmental impact of a new phone is about the same as using your old one for a decade.
It’s nearly impossible to live in the 21st century without contributing to the destruction of the environment and climate change. I am guilty as well — eat meat and occasionally fly. But that doesn’t mean that we should stop trying to do better, or ignore the consequences of our actions. I urge you to think carefully about your next smartphone purchase no matter what those Black Friday ads may be trying to tell you.
28. What does the author’s final decision refer to?
A. Going ahead with getting a new phone.
B. Taking action to help reduce pollution.
C. Updating your phone’s operating system.
D. Raising money for anew smartphone.
29. Why does the author list specific numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To reveal the consequences of making smartphones.
B. To analyze the causes of making new smartphones.
C. To emphasize the huge demand for smartphones.
D. To provide solutions to cutting smartphone use.
30. What message does the author convey in paragraph 4?
A. It is economical to upgrade your device.
B. The lifespan of smartphones is narrowed.
C. The upgrade comes at the expense of the environment.
D Signing a contract spares users from economic pressure.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To push for environmentally friendly smartphones.
B. To discourage businesses from making smartphones.
C. To advise readers not to change smartphones often.
D To demonstrate the negative effects of smartphones.
D
We’ve all been there: those times you need to argue your point of view to someone who you know disagrees with you. You immediately go to your keyboard and start to type out that 280-character tweet, the Facebook reply, or a paragraphs-long email. Surely the reason, logic, and strong power of your written words will convince whoever it is who disagrees with you to see your point of view. But new research suggests a different idea.
That research was conducted by Juliana Schroeder, assistant professor of University of California, Berkeley, and her colleagues. In Schroeder’s study of almost 300 people, participants were asked to watch, listen, and read arguments about subjects they agreed or disagreed with. They were asked to judge the character of the communicator and the quality of the argument. Schroeder’s team found that the participants who watched or listened to the communicator were less dismissive (抵触的)of their claims than when they read that communicator’s same argument.
The idea for her study came from a newspaper article about a politician. One of us read a speech that was printed in a newspaper from a politician with whom he strongly disagreed. The next week, he heard the exact same speech playing on a radio station. He was shocked by how different his reaction was toward the politician when he read the speech compared to when he heard it. When he read the statement, the politician seemed idiotic, but when he heard it spoken, the politician actually sounded reasonable.
So in the workplace, speaking to someone in person often involves nothing more than walking a few doors down to their office. And that’s exactly what you should do if you need to convince that boss or colleague of why your blueprint for the company or project is the right one.
Only as a last way should you try to communicate with someone who you disagree with over social media. Twitter’s limited text allowance and social media users’ short attention make arguing your point an uphill battle.
32. What’s the result of the research?
A. Written words are more logical and reasonable.
B. People prefer to communicate with key board.
C. When reading an argument, the participants were less dismissive than hearing it.
D. Oral, not written, communication works better.
33. Why is the politician mentioned in paragraph3?
A. To introduce the topic for discussion.
B. To summarize the previous paragraphs.
C. To explain why Schroeder conducted the research.
D. To introduce the politician’s speech.
34. What does the underlined word “idiotic’’in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Wise. B. Practical. C. Silly. D. Special.
35 What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. To persuade your boss you need to walk to his office and leave a message.
B. It’s difficult to fully explain your points due to social media’s limitation.
C. Arguing over social media is more convenient than speaking in person.
D. Communicating with others over social media is encouraged.

When my children haven’t played outside enough, I can tell their energy levels will go up and the noise will increase in the house. I feel upset, so I tell them it’s time to go outside. Usually, they complain and come up with reasons why staying in is better, but I insist. Within minutes, they’re out and running around. Sometimes I give them a minimum time limit, say 20 minutes, before they could come back inside. ____36____
Kids need consistent outdoor play. There are many benefits, and I’d like to share some of them.
Outdoor play is good for kids’ physical health. ____37____ Movements like rolling and jumping also stimulate a child’s vestibular system. It’s the organizer for other senses and affects things like balance and space awareness. Children need to stimulate it regularly, and outdoor play allows this to happen naturally.
Outdoor play is beneficial mentally. It makes kids happy. You will see it when they come inside, tired but satisfied. It also gives children a chance to be in a space without fixed rules. There are no requirements to be quiet or stay clean. ____38____ It helps result in imaginative play and a creative flow state.
____39____There’s so much active learning that goes on outdoors. When kids get outdoors, they take the information they’ve heard in the classroom and apply it to real life. They’ll also do better in school after spending more time outside.
Outdoor play is of great importance, so encourage your kids to take part in it. ____40____ You can also take them to beautiful parks and forests on weekends. Your kids will get hours of enjoyment, and the benefits are far-reaching.

One afternoon after school, Mary and her brother,Keith, were eating at a cafe near their home. That afternoon, they had to share their table with another person. That person was a young lady in her twenties. After eating, she went to the restroom. Without realizing, she had left her handphone on the table. Five minutes later, she came out and walked out of the cafe without looking back.
Mary saw the handphone on the table. She quickly told Keith,“Keith, the girl left behind her handphone.”
Keith looked at the handphone. It took his breath away. It was one of the latest models on the market. Keith had always wanted a handphone. But his parents had told him, “You don’t need one. You can always use the house phone.”
He stared at it for some minutes. Then he said slowly, pausing on every word,“I want to take the handphone.”
Mary could not believe her ears. She merely stared at her brother. “You can’t! What if the owner comes to look for it?”
Having made the decision,Keith quickly grabbed the handphone and put it in his schoolbag. Then, he took Mary’s hand and led her out of the cafe quickly.
Once back home, Keith locked his house door with trembling hands. Inside his room, he took out the piece of beauty. Oh, he liked it so much. Now he had his own handphone. Soon, he was polishing it happily.
But Mary told him, “Keith, you cannot keep the handphone. What will you tell Father about this? He will ask you how you got the handphone.”
Keith said quickly, “I will say a friend lent it to me.”
Mary said, “Now you are lying too.” Oh dear! When had Keith turned so dishonest?
Then Mary saw a house phone number on the plastic cover of the handphone. “This is the girl’s phone number. Why don’t we just call this number? We will talk to her and ask her to come and take back her handphone.” She was trying to talk some sense into him.

Dear David,
I am writing to offer my suggestions for the upcoming World Reading Day celebrations. My proposed theme is “The Power of Stories”, which celebrates the impact that stories have on our live.
To bring this theme to life, I suggest hosting a storytelling session to share students’ favorite personal stories, and a creative writing workshop where students can learn how to craft their own stories. These activities will not only encourage students to read the power of stories, but also provide them with a platform to express themselves creatively.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
67. That night, Keith turned over in bed from time to time. He had difficulty sleeping, uncertain about what he should do. Of course, he liked the new handphone. However, he was feeling sorry for the owner. When he thought how sad the young lady would be at the loss of her handphone, he was full of guilt and shame. The next morning, after a long and restless night, he was determined to return the handphone to the owner. After school, he told Mary, “I am going to phone the owner.”
Mary was very happy to hear that. Back home, they phoned the owner’s house phone. A girl answered the phone. Kevin asked, “Are you the owner of the handphone? I’m Keith. I have your handphone. Can you come and get it? ” The girl replied ‘Yes’ excitedly, expressing her gratitude repeatedly. Ten minutes later, she was at the same cafe to meet Keith. Handing back the handphone to her and seeing her smile happily, Keith realized that honesty was indeed the best policy.
