David loved everything about flying. He wanted to be an airplane pilot one day. He made planes out of paper, and he drew cartoons about space travel.
David became so involved in his air travel projects that he often forgot the time. Sometimes he forgot to do his homework. Once, he was late in preparing his part of a group report. As a result, all three students in his group got low grades. “I’m sorry, but look at this fantastic model of a seaplane I made!” David said.
One day at school, David spent his lunch break under a big tree drawing his design for a new spaceship. He heard the bell at the end of the break, but could make himself leave. Surely Mrs. Carl, his teacher, would understand why he was late when she saw his wonderful idea, he thought.
An hour later, David walked back to his classroom. “Where have you been. David? I sent the monitor to look for you,” Mrs. Carl said.
“I’m sorry, but I just had to finish this spaceship design,” said David as he tried to show Mrs. Carl his drawing.
“But we had a special guest speaker this afternoon, an airplane pilot who talked about his job. He just finished his speech and left.” Mrs. Carl explained.
David’s smile fell, along with his heart. “I forgot! I missed him? I can’t believe I missed a real airplane pilot.”
David hung his head in disappointment. “I missed the best part of school for the whole year,” he said to himself.
“Lesson learned?” his teacher said. David nodded, and then he took his seat, putting his drawing away in his desk.

Most of us are used to using the jet hand dryers (喷气式干手器) in public restrooms. They’re surely very convenient — all we need to do is to hold up our hands for a few seconds until they’re dry. And more importantly, they’re supposed to be hygienic. However, a new study published in the Journal of Hospital Infection (临床感染杂志) found that jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria (细菌) than paper towels.
In the study, two restrooms in each of three different hospitals in the UK, France and Italy were required to provide both jet hand dryers or the paper towels for people to use. But on certain days, only either the hand dryer or the paper towel dispenser (自动出纸机) was available to use.
The scientists found that when only the hand dryer was available, the amount of bacteria (细菌) in the restrooms was 27 times higher than on other days. According to the study leader Mark Wilcox, an expert in medical microbiology at Leeds University, UK, hand dryers spread harmful bacteria all over the room. This means that if people use these dryers, they’re more likely to pick up bacteria.
At the same time, however, this raises the question of why these bacteria exist in the first place if people are washing their hands after using the restroom.
“The problem starts because some people do not wash their hands properly,” Wilcox said. In other words, poor hand-washing leads to a large amount of bacteria being left on your hands.
27.How many hospitals took part in the study?
A.27 B.2 C.3 D.5
28.What does the underlined word “hygienic” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.方便的 B.便宜的 C.卫生的 D.有利的

B.Only paper towels were available to use.
C.Only paper towels and the hand dryer are both available to use.
D.Only the hand dryer wasn’t working.
30.What is the structure of the passage? (P=Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
31.What can we know from the passage?
A.It’s common to pick up bacteria in public places.
B.Scientists will find a way to improve hand dryers.
C.Hand dryers won’t be used in the future.
D.Good habits can protect you from danger.
