Do you like listening to music? Do you often turn up the music when you use earphones? If so, your hearing may have been damaged.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is worried that 1.1 billion young people are damaging their hearing by listening to loud music. Nearly half the young people in developed countries may lose their hearing because of the “unsafe use” of music players, including smartphones. Loud music in nightclubs and parties also makes it worse. The WHO advises young people to listen to music for just one hour a day. Dr Etienne Krug told BBC, “What we’re trying to do is to draw people’s attention to a problem that is not talked about enough.”
Dr Krug said keeping the music down and controlling the listening time to less than one hour a day would save a lot of people’s hearing. However, he also said, “Even an hour can be too much if the music is too loud.” Ralph Holme, a researcher, explained how loud noise can damage ears. He said, “Loud sounds damage your hearing by killing off thousands of little hair cells (细胞) in the inner ear. The cells can tell different sounds through vibration (振动). But they are very weak — they get damaged easily and even die if they vibrate too much.” He warned, “The bigger problem is that they don’t grow back and the ear can no longer get sound.”
No one wants to lose their hearing! Therefore, next time when you listen to music, make sure it’s not too loud and only listen for less than an hour.

    D. Why our hearing can’t grow back.
()45. Why did the writer write the passage?

Then predict (预测)their chances for the future. The students, after making social surveys, talking to the boys, and collecting much information, predicted that 90 percent of the boys would spend some time in prison.
Twenty-five years later, another group of students of this professor were given the job of testing that prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the boys — by then men — were still there, a few had died, and some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the 200. They found that only four of the 200 boys had ever spent time in prison.

There are many people in the world but they aren’t of the same height. Some are tall and some are short. It is decided by genes (基因). Genes could decide most features (特征)of our body and height is just one of the thousands. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you with a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall too. But if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don't decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to the expected height. But getting enough sleep and exercise will meet your need.
It’s certain that you’re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There’s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6cm) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty (青春期).
Don’t be afraid if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a time to grow fastest during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first change of puberty.
()42. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph?
    A. Some people are tall and some are short.
    B. There are many genes in our body.
    C. Our height is decided by our parents.

    B. Getting enough sleep and exercise will make you healthy.
    C. Getting enough sleep and exercise will stop you from growing tall.
    D. Get enough sleep and exercise and you will grow to the expected height.
()44. What can we know about puberty?

Born into a farmer’s family, life was not easy when I was a kid. We were so poor that we often did not know where our next meal was coming from. I had to sell vegetables at the marketplace to support my family.
A storyteller once came to the marketplace, and I went to listen to him. My mother was unhappy with me for forgetting my job. But that night, while she was making clothes for us under the weak light of an oil lamp, I couldn’t help retelling stories I’d heard that day. She listened impatiently at first, because in her eyes professional storytellers were smooth-talking men — nothing good ever came out of their mouths. But slowly she was attracted by my retold stories, and from that day on, she never gave me any task on market days, but an unspoken agreement to enjoy new stories. I tried my best to retell the stories for her in lively detail. Soon, she wasn’t the only member of my audience, which later included many of my relatives.
But talkative (健谈的)kids were not well thought of in our village, for they could bring trouble to themselves and their families when they talked too much. Mother often reminded me not to talk so much, wanting me to be a quiet and modest (谦虚的)teenager. However, my natural desire (欲望)to talk never went away, and that is what makes my name — Mo Yan, which means “no speaking”. This strong wish to talk also improved my ability to express myself, which is important to writers who are also considered as storytellers.

According to a UK study, women aren’t likely to keep secrets. Now researchers have been able to tell exactly down to the minute how long it takes before a woman will tell others the secret you tell her. It is 47 hours to be exact. They invited 3,000 British women to do the research. They found that while four out of ten admit (承认)they can never keep a secret, two out of three feel sorry afterwards. It takes women just under two days before they give away (泄露)your secret.
Director of the study, Michael Cox says one of the reasons for the result is that most of the 3,000 women are drunk all the time. But another expert, Andrea Smith, doesn’t think so. In his opinion, men are almost the same as women. When men are drunk, they don’t remember the stories that they have told you. But usually, for women, it is just a topic, while for men, it is friendships between men.
Now the question is why women do it and whether (是否)it makes them feel better or not. According to the study, women feel like they are getting something out of their hearts, or they feel like they get something inside and they just need to share, which will make them feel better. It’s almost like a usual thing, shoe shopping, or getting a haircut. They feel that they are connected with another woman if they say something about another woman. As for men, they sometimes do it, because it’s just a way to express their own ideas.

    A. Andrea Smith thinks British women can’t keep secrets.
    B. Michael Cox believes men are almost the same as women.
    C. Women feel better when they are sharing information with others.
    D. Men can never share their opinions with their close friends.
()45. What is the topic of the passage?
    A. The differences between men and women.

    Dr Molly’s advice:

You should tell him about your dream and that if you work really hard, it might happen even though you started late. The earlier you tell your dad how you feel, the sooner you’ll be able to work on making your dream come true.

Nobody knows you at your new school. You have nothing to lose, so pick up all your courage and go over to someone who looks friendly and introduce yourself. You can ask that person about your teacher or the other kids in your class to break the ice. Good luck!

But five hours later a passenger said the information showed there was a bomb (炸弹) in our plane and the policemen were looking for it. And another five hours passed and most passengers lost their patience before we were allowed to get on the plane. At the entrance (入口) each passenger and their luggage had to be examined. James is a good student and he has lots of friends, but he also has a problem. Some older boys are bullying (欺负) him at school. James is very unhappy and he doesn’t know what to do about it. Here .are some suggestions for him and others in this situation.
Don’t feel worried. It’s not your fault! Being bullied can make you feel very lonely and angry, but you are not alone. Don’t feel that you have to hide the problem. You should find a person you can trust and tell him or her about it. It might be your teacher, your parents, or even your friend. After you tell someone, you will get some support and feel relaxed.
Speaking to an adult might make you nervous, but here are other things you can do. Some people express their feelings more easily on paper. Write a letter to someone or keep a diary. You can write down all the details about what the bullies do, and when and where the bullying happens. You can use it as proof (证据) to show what is going on. And it is a wonderful idea to show your letter or diary to a teacher or another adult. Then the bullies will feel very afraid if their names appear in a letter!

Snowflakes (雪花)can be seen in winter in northern cities. Generally speaking, snowflakes are white. They seem like white stars felling from the sky. But they don’t always look white.
Sometimes they appear to have other colors. Some are red, yellow, or black. There have been snowflakes of almost every shape. Think how it would seem to have these coming all around you. Wouldn’t they look pretty?
Black snow came down in France one year. Another year gray snow fell in Japan. It was

When air is cold and dry, the falling snowflakes are small and hard. If the air is wet and warm, the snowflakes are big and soft.

Have you ever dreamed about sending a letter to yourself or your friends in the future? While express mail (快递) is a fast way to send your letters, there is another type of mail appearing in China as a new business — future mail.
“The letter should be sent next Mother’s Day and not a day earlier!” Lin Xiaofan, a college student in Shanghai, told one of the companies offering the service.
Lin Xiaofan wrote the letter to her mother nearly a year earlier to express her love to her mother for next Mother ’ s Day.
“Offering this service makes people slow down and lets them understand the meaning of ‘time’ in another way,” said Zheng Zhimin, the manager of a“future mail” company. Zheng thinks “fixture mail” letters help remind us of care, friendship and love.
While “future mail” is becoming more and more popular, some people are wondering what will happen if the address changes or if the company goes broken before the letters arrive. Zheng said 6ustomers are glad to sign a contract (签订合同) to make sure that they can be compensated (补偿) if their letters are lost or damaged.
Most of the customers are college students and young workers. Psychologists said that young Chinese might have a new way to express their feelings through this service. Most people put their hopes and wishes in the letter so that they can experience the connection between the past and the present when they receive the letter.

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective (虚构的侦探)who, since his creation in 1887 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has appeared in many books, films, TV series and also games. The newest show of Sherlock Holmes is a BBC production which invites Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, two famous actors, as the two main characters.
This recent BBC production is the most modem version on the traditional Sherlock Holmes storyline, showing modem day crimes in London. In the show, Sherlock played by Cumberbatch, and his partner Watson played by Freeman, decide to solve different crimes together. Although they often disagree on things, they work together to solve the crimes.
I find this show very interesting to watch. I can see how certain crimes are solved, but it is also very funny and entertaining (娱乐的)as it also includes things like love, friendship and family life. Sherlock is my favourite programme to watch.
However, this series is slightly different from many other dramas which have been on television. A “Sherlock” episode lasts 90 minutes, longer than a normal 60-minute one, which is great for the audience as we can see more dramas, fights and jokes. Each episode makes you feel you can’t wait for the next one a week later. However, this series has only 3 episodes. This means it ends soon and I know many people, myself included, feel very sad about this.
The former series ended on a huge cliffhanger (悬念)before having over a year to wait for this series, and this series does the same. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys funny and interesting TV programmes.
    ()42. What is Cumberbatch?
    A. He is a famous detective.
    B. He is a famous actor.
    C. He is the manager of BBC.
    D. He is Freeman’s boss.
()43. What can we learn from the underlined sentence?
    A. The show is very boring.
    B. The audience thinks the show is short.
    C. The show is very attractive.
    D. The audience has no time to see it.
()44. Which is NOT the writer’s opinion about this show?

Arabs (阿拉伯人)think it is a very bad manner to start talking business at once. Even the busiest people always take time to be polite and offer snacks. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this.
The meeting is a way of doing business in the Arab world. Very often, you will have to discuss your business with some people you don’t know, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted (被打断)sometimes by people who come into the room without being asked and talk or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking to, and leave. Act just like you don’t hear, and never show that you are not pleased at being interrupted.
Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is vagueness (含糊)in doing business in the Middle East, which will make a newcomer feel strange. Give yourself lots of time and ask lots of questions.
When an Arab says yes, he may mean “maybe”. When he says maybe, he may mean “no”. You will seldom get a direct “no” from an Arab because it is impolite. Instead of “no”,he may say “inshallah”, which means “if God is willing”. On the other hand, “yes” doesn’t always mean “yes”. Like stress (精神压力),burnout (精疲力尽) has also become a favourite subject of everyday conversation. Many of us may feel burnout at times in our lives. It can be prevented, however, if you take action before you are in danger.
First, you must decide what is really important in your life. Make time for the people and the activities that are the most meaningful to you.
Second, you need to share your stories and feelings with others if you have something bothersome. Talk about your disappointments, sadness, and painful experiences, as well as your joys and successes. If you do not do this normally, you could “explode (爆炸)”. That will be worse for you. But healthy relationships with others will make you stronger and bring a greater balance to your life.
Third, make sure you have time off. Take short breaks as well as long holidays whether you feel you need them or not. Learn how to say “no” so that you can say “yes” to the things that are really important to you. Find activities to cheer you up, such as listening to music, dancing, playing sports or watching movies. You should make some time to be alone.

Sometimes you just can’t help crying. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or blinking about a friend. Then why do people cry? What are tears? …It seems that people have many questions to ask.
Scientists are working hard to find the answers to them. Ad Vingerhoets is a professor at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists who study crying in the world. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal (基本的)tears are the first type. They protect the eyes from other things. The second type is reflex (反射)tears. They wash your eyes when something gets in them. Emotional (情绪) tears are the third type. They appear especially when we feel helpless.
“It seems that tears serve to get help and attention from others,” Vingerhoets says. “I think that emotional tears have to do with the long childhood. That’s the time when we still depend on adults for love, protection and care.”
“In old times, loud crying could cause more danger when humans were living among dangerous animals. Tears were a safer way to ask for help,” Vingerhoets adds.
Lauren Bylsma is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. She and Vingerhoets have done many studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is still much more to discover. “It’s surprising,” she says,“how much we still don’t know.”

William Butler Yeats, a famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. He had an unhappy childhood. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承)excellent taste in art from his family — both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, especially drama (戏剧)and poetry.
Yeats believed strongly in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theater in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments were not accepted at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much attention. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally depended on very traditional forms, he brought modem things to them. As his literary (文学) life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which made him become celebrated.

As we all know, water is necessary for every country, especially clean water for developing countries. Why is clean water so important to developing countries? A recent report shows that about 80 percent of diseases in developing countries are caused by poor water and low sanitation (卫生) conditions. In those countries, women and girls spend several hours collecting water, but often polluted, far away from their families. The polluted water more or less influences their health. In this case, there is an urgent need for people in developing countries to have chances to use clean water to improve their health.
Here is a short story about Hadjara Zakari, a 12-year-old girl in Niger. Having the opportunities to use clean water changed her life. She learnt about the importance of handwashing when the school first received clean water three years ago. That evening, she told her father, “You shouldn’t eat with me unless you clean your hands.” Her father was very angry and shouted at her,“It’s not up to you to tell me what to do!”Surprised, Hadjara sat in silence. But she knew she was right. In protest (抗议),Hadjara refosed to eat dinner that night. After her father questioned Hadjara’s head teacher, he understood her. The girl really wanted her family to live a longer and healthier life.

Nowadays people take taxis by a new way online, like DiDi. This is a hot way. It is also very convenient. Car-hailing company DiDi signed an agreement with TAL Education Group to provide free online courses for the children of taxi drivers.
The courses, worth 30 million yuan, cover all subjects from primary to high school. Children can study the courses at home, saving parents’ time to send or pick up children from offline afterschool classes.
According to Zhu Jingshi, vice president of DiDi, all the 153 million registered (注册)taxi drivers of DiDi can ask for the courses on the company’s mobile app. The car-hailing company will evaluate (评价)the drivers and provide courses on the basis of the time they became registered drivers with the company, the number of passengers served and evaluation from passengers.
