Sally was excited for the weekend to begin.
The minute hand on the big white clock round its way to the number twelve. It was almost three o’clock. The bell 12 rang. The fifth graders at Jefferson Elementary immediately began packing their bags.
“Not so fast.” said Ids. Charlton. “ 13 you leave, I have a special announcement.”
Sally was 14 because special announcements usually meant extra homework. She really wanted to relax this weekend.
“Boys and girls,” said Ms. Charlton, “we are going to have spelling bee next Friday. There will be a winner from this class. The student will go on to compete 15 other students from all of the fifth-grade and sixth-grade classes at Jefferson Elementary.”
“A spelling bee.” thought Sally, and then she signed. She was a hard worker, but she definitely was not the 16 student in her class. She glanced at Annika, who was 17 . Annika was probably thinking about the big trophy she would soon win because she won everything. Sally 18 won anything.
On the way home from school, Sally walked with her friend Jun. Jun moved from South Korea to the United States two years earlier. Sally taught him some English phrases and showed him 19 to get the best hamburgers. He helped her with her math homework and taught her how to use chopsticks.

    “That’s true.” said Sally.
“We have one 25 until the competition. You have a chance,” Jun said, “but you’ll have to work hard.”

British gourmet Fuchsia Dunlop’s posts on WeChat are fun to read. Most of the them are about her experience with food from around the world, especially in China. She says she cooks in a very relaxed way, going to the farmers’ market at the weekend to buy seasonal products for everyday cooking—a mixture of Jiangnan, Hunan, Guangdong, and Sichuan dishes.
“For me, there are so many wonderful things about Chinese food. The thing that I find is greatest about it is that you can eat food that is both really delicious and incredibly healthy,” Dunlop says. “The Chinese are experts at cooking vegetables, so it’s very easy for me to eat Chinese food almost every day.”
Growing up in Oxford, Dunlop dreamed of becoming a cook when she was little. However, herd dream did not start to materialize until she came to Chengdu as a university student in 1994.
Always keeping a notebook on hand wherever she went, ______. Based on her knowledge of Sichuan cuisine (菜肴), Dunlop published her first book, Sichuan Cookery, in 2001, which was hailed by the Observer Food Monthly as “one of the top 10 cookbooks of all time”. Since then, she has published four books about Sichuan cuisine, and one in 2016 about recipes (配方) from Jiangnan, called Land of Fish and Rice.
Now, a Chinese version (版本) of Land of Fish and Rice, translated by He Yujia, is available. In the book, Dunlop displays her profound understanding of the food culture that runs deep in the blood of Chinese people.
Having studied Chinese food culture for nearly two decades, she regards the Jiangnan area as the heartland of the nation’s gastronomy.
“Although you have really interesting and delicious food all over China, in this area, particularly, people wrote about it and discussed it. Many of the old classic food books came from this area, for example. So, if you talk about gastronomy, and not just about good food, then Jiangnan is a really important area,” she says.
Dunlop spent 10 years researching the book.
The decisive moment was in 2008 when she went to Longjing Caotang, a restaurant in Hangzhou, where the whole approach to ingredients, seasoning, cooking and tradition was so moving and impressive that, at that moment, she decided to write a book about the area, she says.
By then, she had published three books about Sichuan and Hunan cuisine, both of which are famous for being spicy. But in Hangzhou and Yangzhou, she encountered food that was calm, peaceful, soothing and delicate.
“Jiangnan food is connected with Chinese literature. Lots of dishes have quite literary names or stories behind them,” she says.
As a result, when introducing food in the book, besides tracing the history of the dishes, she also tells stories like how Su Dongpo invented Dongpo Pork in the 11th century.
After collecting all the recipes, Dunlop tested them at her home in London to make sure they worked for people in the West.

Aubrey recently noticed her grandmother’s difficulty opening a bottle cap. Aubrey wanted to help. She found a method in her engineering class at Carson Middle School. The goal of the class is to solve problems. In the class, students had to change existing (现有的) products to make daily life easier for people with challenges.
To help Aubrey’s grandmother solve the problem, Aubrey explored existing bottle openers and then created her own. For the improved bottle opener design, she used a piece of wood shaped like a cellphone. Next, she put three holes in it. The holes were of different sizes so that they could match common bottle cap sizes. With a simple twist, her grandmother could open bottles without help.
Students like Aubrey used math, physics and tool skills to help people with challenges. They also learned about empathy. “Empathy is looking at problems from another person’s point of view,” Aubrey’s teacher, Mark Bolt said. “It is of great value for engineering. You have to put yourself in the product users’ shoes to build effective solutions.”
Other students in the class also applied empathy as they watched people around them struggle with daily tasks. Then they used their projects to find methods. Roman’s grandfather had trouble holding a coffee cup because of his arthritis (关节炎). So Roman made a 3D-printed finger which helped his grandfather firmly support the bottom of the cup.
The class tried different ways to improve their products. Rather than giving step-by-step directions for creating their projects, Mark Bolt preferred to leave students’ creative paths open. “If we want to do better, we have to have a chance to fail,” he said.

In our modern age, we do not think much about how our technology works. We are so used to tapping on our phone screen to get a map of our location. But how do our phones know where in the world we are and in which direction we are going? It is all thanks to the satellites in space that help our phones calculate our position. Depending on where you are around the world, your phone may be receiving data from different systems. In Europe, people have the Galileo system. In Russia, they have GLONASS. In the USA, people use GPS. China, meanwhile, has the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).
The BDS in operation today is more advanced than the first version (版本) of the system, which was sent into space in 2000. The present version has better technology and more satellites. The system is not finished, though. When it is completed, there will be lots of BDS satellites. In the future, those satellites will allow us to discover the position of objects with millimetre accuracy (精确度): that is ten times more accurate than GPS.
Even though more satellites are being added to the system, the BDS has already been put to use. More than 40,000 Chinese fishing boats are using the system now. These boats are very helpful in search and rescue operations (营救行动) at sea. They are able to communicate with support services on land as well as give the exact locations of ships in trouble.
The BDS is being used on land as well. Of course, it’s not hard to imagine how the system is helping the police and firefighters do their job. Agriculture is another area where there are applications for the system. Farmers are able to put the data to good use when operating smart farming equipment. For example, the BDS can be used to control driverless tractors as they turn up the fields. Farmers are also using drones (无人机) 10 check the health of crops and spread seeds over fields.
Although the BDS is of Chinese origin(起源), the developers have said that “China’s BeiDou is the world’s BeiDou”, and they are actively developing international cooperation. Developers predict that the system will not only grow in popularity within China, but overseas as well. And when the system is complete and fully operational in the years to come, the BDS will undoubtedly bring lots of advantages to China and the rest of the world.

In the middle of Shandong Province, you will find the city Zibo. With about 4.7 million people, the city has especially caught online attention since March, 2023 and become one of the most popular attractions in Shandong. How did Zibo make it? The followings may explain this.
    Zibo Barbecue (BBQ)
Its attractive barbecue culture is the first and main reason why Zibo is so hot now. The city has been known because of its plenty of barbecue restaurants for years. The local government tries its best to create a wonderful open-air BBQ environment.
When the meat and vegetables are served, people have fun grilling(烧烤) them with their own hands and then wrapping them in thin and round pancakes, usually with spring onions to add a special taste. Zibo has also offered special tourist trains and designed BBQ bus lines to let more tourists arrive directly.
A kind city in difficult times
Some Internet users recommended Zibo for another reason. It played a special-role when China fought against COVID-19. Zibo first became known after a group of students from Jinan went there in March. They had to be quarantined(隔离) because of COVID-19 and they were taken good care of while they stayed there. The students also celebrated their last night in Zibo with a major BBO dinner. It is said that these students wanted to go back to Zibo and spend time there as a way to thank the city—not knowing they would help make the city famous.
    Power of Douyin
Douyin is also at the heart of Zibo’s recent success. Zibo first became a hot topic on Douyin in early March, when the videos of the first group of students going back to Zibo to eat barbecue became popular. In April, Zibo hit the hot lists on Douyin again. One vlogger(视频博主) tried ten different food shops in the city and found that they all gave him the right kilos. These food shops even gave him some extra food for free, proving the idea that Zibo is a friendly city.
All in all, it’s clear that Zibo has done something right. It has shown what is the key to success: staying kind, being honest, and most of all, keeping the barbecue hot.

    When当……时;After在……之后;Before在……之前;While与……

根据“She was a hard worker, but she definitely was not the...student in her class”和语境可知,but前后内容表示转折关系,“努力”和“差”不构成转折,排除A和D。
根据“Annika was probably...she won everything.”

    who谁;what什么;where哪里;why为什么。
But但是;Because因为;However然而;So所以。根据“I really want to win the spelling bee”和“I don’t think I can do it”可知,设空处前后表述内容构成转折关系,且空后无逗号,所以应填But。故选A。
根据“ three or four spelling mistakes ”可知,此处表示犯错,make mistakes“犯错”。故选A。

    at all全然,根本;after all毕竟;in all总计;above all首先。根据“ I didn’t know any English...” not...at all“一点也不,根本不”符合语境,故选A。

    The Power of Persistence
There are many problems in our life. Some people give up halfway, some people keep going. I want to share my experience with you.
When I entered junior high school, my English was poor. I was afraid of answering questions in class. When my English teacher Mrs Hu noticed my trouble, she talked to me for a long time. She gave me some advice on how to improve my English. She also encouraged me to keep studying. With her help, I kept studying and speaking English every day. After several months, I made great progress in the final exam. And my spoken English has improved a lot.
