Who says you have to stay indoors when the temperatures drop? Here are favourite places to explore this winter.
    Athens, Greece
In Athens, every November the crowds lift and temperatures stay around the mid-20s, so have a trip to the Parthenon and Acropolis. A full afternoon is also necessary for exploring the Museum of Cycladic Art and its exhibitions—recently it has hosted Picasso’s.
In the streets of the Pysrri district is a hidden hole in the wall, from which one can go down to the basement restaurant, Diporto.
    Huaraz, Peru
To some, Peru gives people images of students in printed shorts on a tour of Machu Picchu. There’s obviously so much more to do in the UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) site. Valletta, Malta
Flights from the UK to Malta’s capital are only around f30, making it one of the best destinations for a November trip. This tiny city has a temperature of 17 and has changed itself into a year-round city break with artistic cafes, hotels and newly opened galleries—Muza opened last year and houses the former National Gallery collection.

How many bicycles do you need in your life? For 67-year-old Chai Lin, the answer is 1,300 and counting.
Chai s passion for bicycles dates back to the 1960s when he saw some people riding the two-wheeled vehicle in his home city of Lanzhou, capital of north-west China’s Gansu Province. However, in that era, a bicycle was still a luxury for ordinary Chinese. To get enough money sooner, Chai made use of his talent in calligraphy and painting — a skill he started to learn from six years old — by selling artworks on the street. Thanks to all the efforts and “crowd-funding” in his family, Chai got his first bike in 1980.
After becoming a businessman years later and earning enough to buy fancy motorbikes and cars, Chai’s passion for bikes, however, didn’t dwindle at all. He began to collect bikes of various brands and ages, especially antiques, from around the world through auctions and other ways.
After 10 years’ efforts, the Gansu Sanmu Bicycle Museum, located in Chengguan District of Lanzhou, finally opened to the public in January 2019 free of charge.
The museum has been designated as an off-campus research centre for local primary and middle school students and is also popular with tourists. In the first half of this year alone, it received more than 900,000 tourists. Due to limited space, a large part of Chai’s collection is not yet exhibited and has to be stored in the warehouse, driving him to improve the museum.
“Bikes carry unique and precious memories of our generation. I hope to expand the scale of the displaying area of the museum and provide a comfortable ‘home’ for my bikes,” he said.
4.What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.Chai has a talent for calligraphy and painting.
B.Chai has a unique love for bicycles more than others.
C.Chai knew the skill of life when he was very young.
D.Chai managed to get his first bicycle through all efforts.

A.By giving data. B.By giving examples.
C.By the order of time. D.By comparison with others.
7.What will be continued to describe next?
A.Chai will make more speeches in various occasions.
B.Chai’s Bicycle Museum will be open to visitors from the world.
C.Chai will expand the museum to treasure the memory of bikes.
D.Chai’s Bicycle Museum will display all collections in the warehouse.

China is betting on its successful hybrid rice varieties to fight food shortage in Africa.
“We’re no longer suffering from hunger,” 55-year-old Georges Ranaivomanana, a Madagascan farmer who took the lead in planting Chinese hybrid rice in his town of Mahitsy. Georges told Xinhua that he hoped that all Madagascan farmers would use the seeds to raise their living standards.
China has been helping African countries develop productive rice farming for years with its hybrid rice. For farmers on the continent like Ranaivomanana, they are “very grateful” to the Chinese as the hybrid rice is the key to better food security and higher incomes.
In May, the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre opened a research centre in Madagascar to select hybrid rice varieties based on the island nation’s diverse ecological environment, in an effort to find more productive crops for a continent long troubled by insufficient grain output.
In the northwestern Nigerian state of Kebbi, Chinese expert Wang Xuemin stood in a rice field, surrounded by green rice plants. “This year, we are using a new technology,” he said, adding that “it can significantly reduce labor and other costs. “The land, climate and rice farming methods in Nigeria are very different from those in China. We had a lot of problems at the beginning,” said the 51-year-old who has been in Nigeria for 16 years.
In 2006, after Wang and his colleagues had sown the seeds, their field management techniques and large-scale farming equipment could not adapt to the operating environment, and hundreds of hectares of rice fields were almost completely taken over by weeds. “We came to realize that blindly copying the Chinese model is not feasible (可行的). It is necessary to constantly innovate our techniques to fit the local situation in Africa,” he said.
After more than ten years of research and innovation, the Nigerian farm now becomes a major training and mechanized production centre in the country, training more than 1,000 farmers and agricultural machinery management staff.
8.What’s the attitude of African farmers about Chinese hybrid rice?
A.A little skeptical. B.Full of gratitude.
    C.Much disappointed. D.Extremely curious.
9.How old was Wang Xuemin when he came to Nigeria?
A.51 years old. B.55 years old.
C.67 years old. D.35 years old.

A.Different technologies should be applied to different areas.
B.Chinese technology of hybrid rice can’t be applied in Africa.
C.Chinese technology of hybrid rice wastes more labor and costs.
D.Chinese experts contributes to raising African living standards.
11.What’s the best title of the text?
A.China’s Hybrid Rice Sows Hope for Africa
B.Africans Fight Food Shortage with Chinese
C.The Sowing of Hybrid Rice Should Vary from Country
D.Chinese Hybrid Rice Research Has Not Been Open in Africa

In July 2021, astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) planted pepper seeds as part of an experiment to test which plants could be successfully grown in space. The peppers were harvested four months later, and the team celebrated with a party and taste test.
For astronauts living mostly off prepackaged foods for months at a time on the ISS, fresh and flavourful produce is welcomed. With long missions to the Moon and Mars in focus, NASA is working to find sustainable ways for astronauts to enjoy fresh foods, which will add key nutrients to their diets and improve their state of mind.
Astronauts have grown radishes, zinnias and a variety of lettuces on board the ISS before, but this is the first time they grew peppers, which posed a new challenge, reports Elizabeth Howell for Space. com.
Biologists at the Kennedy Space Centre spent two years picking the perfect pepper. They wanted to try peppers because they’re a great source of vitamins and nutrients, and they can be eaten raw or cooked. Plus, peppers are fairly low maintenance to grow.
In June, a carrier delivered supplies to the ISS along with a package of 48 pepper seeds. Astronauts on board planted the seeds in a microwave oven-sized growing container. The conditions in it—such as lighting, watering and air circulation—were controlled by a crew based at the Kennedy Space Centre. On board, the astronauts collected data and offered feedback on the flavour of the peppers.
“This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of their equipment,” LaShelle Spencer, a plant scientist at NASA, said over the summer. “To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well.”
12.Why did astronauts attempt to plant pepper in space?
A.There were no enough food for astronauts.
B.Only pepper can grow in space.
C.Pepper can grow better than other plants.
D.Humans wanted to test which plants can grow in space.
13.What special benefits does pepper have relative to other plants?
A.It needn’t too much later care. B.Its nutrients are the highest.
C.The vitamins in it are the most. D.It improves their state of mind most.
14.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 5?
    A.Package. B.Container. C.Seed D.Microwave.
15.What can we infer from the text?
A.The idea that pepper is grown in space is silly.
B.Astronaut need special nutrition to keep the best state of mind.
C.Pepper can’t be eaten cooked in space but it can be eaten raw.
D.It is the carrier that is in charge of sending feedback on the peppers.

    二、七选五
Talking to someone on a train, bus, or subway can be risky yet exciting, as you never know when they're going to get off. Here are some useful tips.
Make eye contact. Making brief eye contact can show the person that you're interested and help you judge whether they are interested in you. 16 If they look away quickly or appear disinterested, it's probably best not to approach.
17 If the person looks at you once more, this is a good sign that they notice you and want to interact with you. When making eye contact, keep your facial expression light and friendly, rather than straight and serious.
Smile at them. If you are successful, smile at the person. A small but genuine smile makes you appear interested, friendly, and approachable. If the other person smiles back, you’re likely in luck in getting them to talk to you.
Use open body language. 18 Do this by keeping your arms uncrossed. Stand or sit up straight and show good posture (姿势).
19 Once you’ve read the other person to see if they’re interested in conversing (交谈), make a move. If you're far away, move closer. You should keep a comfortable distance where you can hear each other yet not feel awkward if the conversation doesn't work out. Find a seat near them, yet don't crowd them.
If they're standing, stand near enough to them to be able to speak with them, but don't get too close for comfort. If there's a seat next to them, ask, “May I sit here?" Try not to be nervous. Many people are just as excited to chat with new people as you are. If they engage, then keep it up! 20
    A.Notice how they respond.
B.Approach the person to start talking to them.
C.As you can see, your body language speaks for itself.
D.Try to make eye contact again after about 30 seconds.
E.Eye contact is the act of looking into someone's eyes.
F.Make a point to appear open, comfortable, and available.
G.You'll meet some people and perhaps even make some friends.

Going back to school after a long break can be exciting for many. But for some, it isn’t easy, especially when there is something bothering them from deep inside—emotional baggage. One teacher in Oklahoma wanted to address that and that’s what she just did last week when her 7th and 8th graders showed up to school.
Karen Wunderlich Loewe has become popular after she posted about her school activity, which encouraged her young pupils to let it all out, whatever emotional baggage they have. This activity has moved the whole class to tears.
The students were told to write on the paper anonymously (不具名地) so they can have the courage to share their emotional baggage with the class. The students would then crumple (弄皱)their paper and put it and throw it across the room.
Each student would then pick up any piece of paper and read it to the class. Everyone learned what others’ problems were. There were things like losing pets, being left by their parents, disease, death…and on and on.
Once someone finished reading a piece of paper, the English teacher would then ask the class who owned that note. Students had a choice of admitting it or not. Many of them did and ended up sharing their stories with the entire class.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是研究发现鲨鱼吃人是因为它们把人误以为是海豹。
    36.考查冠词。句意:一个人被鲨鱼杀死的几率只有370万分之一,但这种恐惧仍然足以让游泳者担心被视为猎物。shark是可数名词的单数形式,表泛指,前面要加不定冠词,shark是辅音音素开头。故填a。
    37.考查动名词。句意:一个人被鲨鱼杀死的几率只有370万分之一,但这种恐惧仍然足以让游泳者担心被视为猎物。about是介词,其后跟动名词作宾语,且 swimmers 和see为被动关系,所以这里应用动名词的被动式being+过去分词。故填being。
    38.考查同位语从句。句意:现在,新的研究支持了这个由来已久的理论,即大白鲨咬人是“认错人”的结果。分析句子可知,这里是同位语从句,此空后面的完整句子用来解释说明前面名词the long-standing theory ,由句意可知,应用that引导。故填that。
    39.考查时态。句意:一组生物学家比较了海豹和人类游泳的视频。空格处是谓语,句子描述过去的事情,时态是一般过去时,空格处用过去式,且A team of biologists和compare为主动关系。故填compared。
    40.考查固定短语。句意:然后,他们对这些片段进行编辑,模拟大白鲨的视觉,发现从海洋生物的角度来看,人类确实与海豹非常相似。point of view是固定短语,意为“观点,角度”,故填of。
    41.考查时态语态。句意:通常,大白鲨被视为‘盲目的杀手’和‘喜欢人肉’。分析句子可知,此空应填谓语动词,great white sharks 和regard为被动关系,句子描述的是客观事实,时态用一般现在时,因此空格处是一般现在时的被动语态,主语sharks是复数。故填are regarded。
    42.考查物主代词。句意:我们只是看起来像它们的食物。根据语境可知,句子表示“我们只是看起来像他们的食物”,空格处意为“它们的”,用形容词性物主代词their修饰名词food。故填their。
    43.考查副词。句意:它们每天吃海豹,咬人的情况极为罕见。分析句子可知,空格处应用副词extremely修饰形容词rare。故填extremely。
    44.考查不定式。句意:为了击中正确的目标,鲨鱼可以依靠其他感官,比如气味。根据语境可知,空格处用不定式表目的,位于句首的单词首字母要大写。故填To hit。
    45.考查形容词。句意:如果是这样的话,关于大白鲨如何使用这些感官的进一步研究可能有助于防止进一步的攻击。空格处用形容词additional作定语,修饰名词studies,additional意为“额外的”。故填additional。
    46.Dear Peter,
I’m writing to invite you to our school’s Chinese speech contest and its topic is “My Future Career”. The contest will be held on Saturday afternoon, at the school auditorium. We would be very happy if you could join us.
I believe that it will be a great opportunity for you to practice your Chinese skills. It would be great if you could prepare a well-structured speech, including your future career plans, and present it in a confident manner.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know. We look forward to your participation and wish you good luck.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    高兴的:happy → glad/pleased

    期待:look forward to → expect

    简单句变复合句

拓展句:I’m writing to invite you to our school’s Chinese speech contest, the topic of which is “My Future Career”.
【点睛】[高分句型1] I believe that it will be a great opportunity for you to practice your Chinese skills. (运用了连词that引导的宾语从句)

    47.One possible version:
Everyone was moved to tears. It was an emotionally draining activity but Karen believes that her activity will inspire the kids to “judge a little less, love a little more, and forgive a little faster.” After the activity, Karen told her students to put the paper inside a bag hanging by the door. This should remind the young minds that everyone is struggling with something. While everyone is going through hard times differently, they should leave their problems out the door and enjoy learning.
Karen’s post on social media was shared over 370K times and received heartwarming comments. “This bag hangs by my door to help the kids remember that we all have baggage,” Karen said. “But they are not alone, they are loved, and we have each other’s back. “While many see this as an act of good faith and a feel-good story, some think this will just open up wounds of pain. One, in particular, is a teacher, said that research suggests asking student to share with everyone and relive painful situations is actually counterproductive.
