The prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) is located at the front of your brain. This part of the brain helps us understand risk. It’s also in charge of a lot of our higher-level thinking, such as planning and self-control.
All of these skills use up a lot of brainpower. There is less left over for other things. Your brain might be slower. It might make more mistakes. On top of that, lying is hard for younger people. That’s because their brains are still growing and forming.
▲
People do not have to lie to make others feel good. They can do so while telling the truth. It is more important to reward people. Telling the truth can be rewarding sometimes. It feels good.

Yan Hong is a 33-year-old traditional handicraft (手工艺品) designer from Chengdu. Several years ago, she decided to give up her job at a hospital to do something that she truly loved to do. But at that time she didn’t expect her handicrafts to become a hit in China and abroad.
Working for one’s dream requires double the effort. She usually begins to work at 9 a. m. It often doesn’t end until 1 a. m. or even later. But she never regrets pursuing (追求) her dream. Because she is always working with metal materials and sharp tools, Yan Hong’s fingers are often covered in small cuts. One big problem is to find the materials that can be used to recreate these classical fashions.
Today the young artist has become a master of handicrafts. Yan Hong is good at using recycled materials. No matter how common the materials are, she is always able to create art from them. With her “magic hands”, she once completed a set of headwear of the Miao ethnic (少数民族) group from 68 cans. Many of her artworks are inspired by traditional Chinese culture. One of her most popular productions is based on Chinese classic text Shan Hai Jing, also known as the Classic of Mountains and Seas.

“It is a great honor for me to introduce traditional Chinese handicrafts to the world.” she said proudly. However, she did not think her success was mainly because of her great craftsmanship (手艺), but thanks to our “mother country’s big influence in the world.”
She thinks more people from other countries have started to be interested in Chinese culture as our country becomes stronger. And she feels very thankful to live in such good times and have a chance to show our traditional culture to the world.

You probably have noticed it: Chongqing’s population has been aging fast. According to China’s latest national census (人口普查), up to 23.4 percent of the city’s residents (居民) are aged over 60. This number is expected to grow even further in the coming years.
Chongqing is not alone. Many other cities around the world have been experiencing this same problem for some time now. Some people are worried about this. The elderly, they say, do very little for the nation’s economy (经济). The government, however, has to give them lots of retirement benefits (退福利). But a recent survey shows that many people agree there are some positives to having an aging population.
With an aging population, younger people will have more chances to meet seniors in their daily lives. With age comes wisdom. Through usual communication, the elderly can bring a wealth of a useful life lessons to younger people. The young, at the same time, are given chances to see things from a completely different perspective (视角).
Besides, in many cultures, it’s normal for elderly parents to live with their children under the same roof. Their children may have already reached adulthood, but these gray-haired men and women continue to play an important role in their development. In some families, the elderly are taking care of their grandchildren. It’s reported that half of all the children in China’s cities live with their grandparents and are raised under their guidance. Thanks to this free childcare, working parents can contribute more to the economy.
An aging population is often considered to be a headache. But perhaps it can be argued that there are also some benefits to it.

Going Green
Humans have lived on the earth for 35, 000 years, but during this period, we have polluted our planet a lot in many ways. What can we do to build a beautiful China?
Green China
Waste-to-energy is burning the waste to produce electricity. First, the cleaners collect household waste. Then, the waste is sorted through a series of smart sensors (智能传感器). Next, the sorted waste is poured into three different pools and dried. After that, the waste is sent to the incinerator (焚化炉) for burning. Finally the heat changes water into steam (蒸汽) to produce electricity. The ash and metals in the slag (炉渣) can be recycled and reused.
By the end of 2021, there were more than 700 waste-to-energy sites across the country, processing 820,000 tons of waste per day. China has become the largest player in this area now.
A zero-waste life
A zero-waste life follows the 6R rule—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle and Rot (堆肥降解). People are helping our planet in this way. Following the rule, Liu Yu, 27, produced only two cans of rubbish for three months. She also opened a zero-waste shop in Chongqing to provide daily zero-waste products. All products are reusable.
“The zero-waste lifestyle is not for ascetics (苦行僧) but for everyone. It’s just around us at our fingertip (指尖). To save the Earth, many hands make light work,” says Yu.
Green Planet Club
Wang Tao, 15, has organized Green Planet Club in his school. They have DIY workshops. Here, old clothes can be made into handbags. It’s also fun to use recycled bottles and used wood to make furniture like chairs and desks. Iron and other materials from old toys can be made beautiful art pieces by them! Working as volunteers is their task as well. They tell people the importance of living a green life and teach people how to sort waste in communities.
