Eighty-four-year-old Stephen Wertheimer has never raced against the clock. It may be the reason he was the oldest finisher at last year's New York City marathon, and is now onto his 60th marathon Sunday——which would make it his 39th New York City marathon.
Wertheimer, a father of six and grandfather of 11, is running Sunday along with his daughter Erin, who he describes as much speedier than him and a true athlete. Running has been a way to connect to his children, three of whom also run marathons, with the New York City marathon being especially meaningful for him so he can spend some quality time with Erin who lives in Denver.
Wertheimer was not a natural born athlete, he admits, describing himself as "absolutely out of balance, ” and says the only exercise he got as a kid was turning pages of a book. It was when he got drafted into the Navy and had to run and swim a mile in the School of Aerospace Medicine in Pensacola, Florida that gave him an increase of confidence. After he returned home, he began cycling and then jogging, which helped him battle the stress and energy needed as a surgeon—he's still practicing medicine today.
In 1978, he ran his first marathon in New York City. His original intention was to feel active and healthy, but it soon became something he leaned on for comfort, especially as a way to slow down mentally.
Fighting against burnout and stress and getting a chance to use marathons as a way to see the world and travel has kept Wertheimer going over the years. The way to stick with something-anything-is to find something you love. And Wertheimer has made marathons his vacations. He plans to take three days off of his work as a doctor when he completes the race and heads back to California, a reward he has always given himself, before getting back to his routine outdoors for a slow, enjoyable scenic jog again.
    24. Why does the author say "Stephen has never raced against the clock”?
    A. He is not a natural born athlete.
    B. He is the oldest marathon finisher.
    C. He likes running with his daughter.
    D. He enjoys slowing down mentally.
    25. What can we learn about Stephen?
    A. He exercised a lot when he was a kid.
    B. He practiced marathon when he joined the Navy.
    C. He will take a vacation after completing his 60th marathon.
    D. He ran his first marathon due to his feeling healthy and active.
    26. Which word best describes Stephen?
    A. Hardworking. B. Optimistic. C. Considerate. D. Talented.
    27. What does marathon mean to Stephen?
    A. It reflects his state of mind.
    B. It has something to do with the age.
    C. It is the best way to connect with children.
    D. It offers him chances to compete with others.
    C
The Devil's Hole Pupfish(鳞鱼)inhabits a very horrible environment, as its name suggests. 263. of them are limited to a single deep cave in the Mojave Desert of Nevada, where the water temperature is permanently around 93 degrees Fahrenheit. Food is so scarce that they are constantly on the edge of starvation, and oxygen levels are so low that most other fish would die right away. Of all known fishes, the pupfish inhabits the tiniest habitat.
In the 1960s and 1970s, human's destruction of their habitat had contributed to the reduced number of the pupfish. Local farmers and developers tapped groundwater in the area, lowering the water level in Devils Hole and causing a population decline. Devils Hole and its inhabitants were preserved by a 1976 Supreme Court decision, allowing the government to ban groundwater exploration, and the endangered species was protected at a nearby 100, 000-gallon pool at the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge.
Nevertheless, a decline in the 1990s led the wild population to its nadir in 2013:35 individuals. Since then, the wild population has increased while the reserve population has grown to 400.
Researchers at the University of Michigan found that the crashed number of Devils Hole pupfish can not only be attributed to humans. Researchers at the University of Michioan found that the crashed number of Devils Hole pupfish can not only be attributed to humans. The pupfish's displayed inbreeding(近亲繁殖) and a lack of genetic(基因的)variety similar to those observed in newly captured individuals. the majority of whom passed away naturally. It is suggested that selective breeding could assist promote diversity and possibly prevent the extinction of the pupfish species. Additionally. genome(染色体组) editing could re-add missing genes to the body.
“There is not an easy answer when it comes to using genomic data and applying it to conservation because it is likely to get worse with climate change as well as increased habitat divisions and just human interruptions, ”said lead researcher Christopher Martin. “It is unclear how genes affect a species' physical and behavioral features and how this relates to fitness and adaption to a particular environment, "he added.
    28. What can we know about the pupfish?
    A. They lives in a terrible environment.
    B. Their living space is the smallest among all animals.
    C. Their population decline was due to water pollution.
    D. They were only kept in Devils Hole for protection.
    29. What do the underlined words “its nadir” mean in paragraph 3?
    A. Its dangerous situation. B. Its bad habitat.
    C. Its exact number. D. Its lowest point.
    30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Re-add missing genes can be effective.
    B. Genetic methods may not be a good way.
    C. Genes have nothing to do with their fitness.
    D. Genomic data are the key to protecting pupfish.
    31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. The Extinction of Devils Hole Pupfish.
    B. Human's Influence on Devils Hole Pupfish.
    C. Saving the Endangered Devils Hole Pupfish.

    D
No soil? No problem Some herbaceous plants living on rocky mountains in Brazil use roots equipped with fine hairs and acids to dissolve(溶解)rocks and obtain the key nutrient phosphorus(读). The discovery helps explain how a variety of plants can survive in poor environments.
Patricia de Britto Costa, a plant ecologist and other colleagues in Brazil and Australia investigated how shallow-soil regions in Portuguese, or rocky grasslands, can sustain more than an estimated 5, 000 plant species——15 percent of Brazil's plant diversity——despite occupying less than I percent of the country's land area. What soil there is poor, with nearly undetectable levels of the nutrients that plants need.
Researchers used sharp tools to dig up the plants. "We found the roots growing into the rocks at least 10 centimeters deep, " says coauthor Anna Abrahao, a plant ecologist now at the University of Bodenheim in Stuttgart, Germany. “The roots go deeper, and we always lose some of them. ”
Chemical analyses of 30 species of two plant species living on rocks revealed specialized part of thickly packed hairs just behind the root tip. The roots have secrete acids, likely from the fine hairs, which dissolve rock and release phosphorus that the roots then absorb to get the nutrient. Scientific scans suggest that the roots carve their own way into rocks, rather than growing along cracks. These roots, found only in these two species so far, are the first known to dissolve rocks, the team says. The scientists named these structures vellozioid(似丝绒的)roots, after the plants' family name.
Plants living in other phosphorus-poor environments around the world have developed roots with thick hairs and acid to harvest phosphorus from 1mm poor soils and sand, but not actual rock. Vellozioid roots use the same strategy "in an entirely new way, ” by “dissolving rocks and forming new sand, ”Valentine says. Further research into vellozioid roots might one day help develop more efficient crops.
    32. Which of the following is the faction of hairs behind the root tip?
    A. Providing acids. B. Dissolving rocks.
    C. Releasing phosphorus. D. Absorbing the nutrient.
    33. How do vellozioid roots get nutrient?
    A. By taking in their secret acids.
    B. By absorbing phosphorus in rocks.
    C. By carving their ways along cracks.
    D. By harvesting nutrient from the poor soil.
    34. What may the research bring about in the future?
    A. It can improve the phosphorus-poor environments.
    B. It can develop roots with thick hairs and acid.
    C. It can dissolve rocks and forming new sand.
    D. It can increase the agriculture productivity.
    35. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Plants' roots with fine hairs and acids.
    B. Plants' poor living environment.
    C. Plants' new ways to obtain the nutrient.
    D. Plants' methods of dissolving the rocks.

As an art historian, I am enthusiastic about communicating my love of art to the wider public—which is why I started my new series My Favourite Work of Art". Each week I invite a well-known personality to share an artwork. 36___________________And I want to build a confidence in viewers of artworks.
Sometimes art can seem inaccessible or difficult to understand. But at the heart of every engagement with an artwork is this: do you like it or not? Even though a lot of our art galleries and museums are free in the UK, many people are put off visiting for fear that they won't understand the art on display. 37_______________ But this simply isn't true. Everyone is equal in front of an artwork and there are no wrong answers.
When talking about the challenges of understanding art, I'm often reminded of the Hans Christian Andersen story "The Emperor's New Clothes”. No one dares admit they can't see anything. It takes a young child to tell the truth. “Listen to the voice of innocence(天真)”announce the Emperor's officials.
38__________. Contemporary art can be particularly difficult to understand but enjoying an artwork is inborn. Do you like it or not? Do you find it striking or not? Do you want to find out more or not? 39_____________ It doesn't matter what other people say or think.
But there are things you can do. Read the wall text at the side of the artwork. If staff are present, ask questions. Asking questions is the key to understanding more—and that goes for anything in life——not just art. 40 ____________ If you are appreciating an artwork, then you are the intended viewer and what you think natters. You are the only critic that counts.
    A. If you don't like it, that's OK!
    B. There is no need to be put off.
    C. But above all, have confidence in front of an artwork.
    D. Part of an artwork's value came from the person viewing it.
    E. There's a concern that other visitors may be more knowledgeable.
    F. Similarly, in front of an artwork, you should try to look innocently.
    G. It's about personal stories surrounding artworks and the emotional power of art.

It was in the freezing midwinter night, and a walking couple of dogs on a rural(乡村的)highway outside of town were seeking their shelter. The father-to-be looked through the roadside for some home, where his struggling companion might rest safely for the night. He looked over her frequently. She labored along, her way made heavier by the new life growing inside het. They needed a warm, dry place safe from the bitter wind.
That night, Gus Kicbel, a county wildlife officer, was driving home from work when he spotted the pair in the flash of his headlights. It was snowing so hard that it was difficult to see. but he could tell they were wearing tags(标牌). What were they doing on the road? He parked his truck and approached the animals.
Gus got down and reached out his hands to them, which made no effort to escape. He pulled out his phone to call the number listed on the tags, but it was snowing so hard that his screen became unclear.
He placed the dogs in his truck. By the time he came around to the driver's side, he found that they were leaning close together on the passenger seat. Gus dried his phone, took a picture of the pair and sent it to his wife, Katie Kiebel, an animal lover.
Then he called the number from the dog's tags. A man answered and immediately grew annoyed when Gus told him why he was calling.
“I gave those dogs away, ”the man said. “They are not mine anymore. ”"Well, do you want them back?" "No. I can't take care of them. "The man hung up. The dogs who looked dirty and uncared for were abandoned. No home at all in this world. Gus looked at their large round pitiful eyes, anxious.
