The MetroCard New York, a thin plastic rechargeable card, is a good option if you are planning to take a tour of New York and are looking for a simple and inexpensive way to get around!
Which to choose?
Depending on your preferences, you can choose among the following types of cards:
The pay-per-use card:Pay-per-ride MetroCard
A metro journey costs $ 3 (single fare), but with a Pay-per-ride MetroCard you will only pay $2. 75. Your card will be charged for each journey you make.
Note that a card can be used by up to 4 people-i. e. if you only have one card in your group of 4 people, you can access the subway or bus by swiping(刷卡)it 4 times. However, if there are 5 of you, you will need a second card:the Pay-per-ride MetroCard can only be swiped 4 times in a row.
The unlimited use payment card:Unlimited Ride MetroCard
The 7-day-unlimited MetroCard is valid(有效的)for 7 straight days. It costs $33. If you use public transport often during your stay, it will quickly become profitable! That's why it’s the most commonly used card for tourists.
The 30-day-unlimited MetroCard is valid for 30 days. It costs $127. You have unlimited swipes on the subway and buses for 30 days, and you can't pause it once started.
The One-year MetroCard is valid for a whole year, so it is of no interest to tourists.
How to use?
You have to swipe your MetroCard through the reader and then wait for the display to say “GO”. Unfortunately, this isn’t as easy as it sounds at times. As with many other Metro passes, it can be kind of tricky at first, but if you can't get it working, you are not alone. Just watch other people and do what they do.
21. How many Pay-per-ride MetroCardsre needed at least for a group of 6 people?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 4. D. 6.
22. Which type of card is the most popular among tourists?
A. One-year MetroCard.
B. Pay-per-ride MetroCard.
C. 7-day-unlimited MetroCard.
D. 30-day-unlimited MetroCard.
23. What are new users advised to do with failed card swipes?
A. Check the reader.
B. Copy successful passengers.

It is impossible to tell what the future holds. For Nelly Cheboi, the future was guided by her childhood dream of wanting to change the lives of those around her; little did she know that technology would become the gateway for such change.
A native of Mogotio, Kenya, Nelly Cheboi grew up in a run-down house, walked to school barefoot every day, and went to bed hungry every night-something not uncommon for those in her community. Nevertheless, she studied hard and earned a full-ride college scholarship. She had consumed plenty of books growing up, but didn't know a thing about computers. If given a ten page paper in college, Cheboi would choose to hand-write it because she typed too slowly.
It was only in Cheboi’s third year of college that she encountered computer science—a subject she was fascinated by. She learned low technology could serve the economy and realized that, in order to fix the systems in Kenya that kept people in a cycle of poverty (贫穷), she could encourage her community to work online. That then became the motivation for TechLit Africa.
Founded in 2018, TechLit Africa is Cheboi's nonprofit organization that provides students in rural Kenya with access to technology and the ability to learn fundamental digital skills. Computers are donated, transported to Kenya, and then refurbished(翻新)locally. TechLit Africa provides the compters and curriculum to schools. Schools and parents cover for the costs of local operations.
Today, Cheboi is working on ensuring TechLit Africa keeps running, especially in terms of funding. She says that TechLit Africa's programs are the highlight of students' days-but it is difficult to convince parent , teachers and the county government of the digital economy and how technology can financially support people.
“In a way, TechLit Africa serves as a bridge to connect two worlds-kids interact, ask questions and imagine what life is like out there while understanding the value of the Internet, ”Cheboi says. In doing so, kids unlock global opportunities and a second chance at a more fulfilling life.
24. Where did Cheboi's weakness lie according to paragraph 2?
A. Taking care of herself. B. Reading academic books.
C. Handwriting papers. D. Using a computer.
25. Why did Cheboi decide to establish TechLit Africa?
A. To free her community from heavy physical work.
B. To encourage online communication among locals.
C. To raise funds for uneducated children in poor areas.
D. To lift her community out of poverty by the Internet.
26. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Cheboi’s program?
A. Its development. B. Its impact. C. Its challenge. D. Its popularity.
27. How does TechLit Africa benefit kids in Africa?
A. It ensures future employment.
B. It provides a global perspective.
C. It increases chances of traveling.
D. It inspires passion for charity.
C
Imagine if it were easy for everyone to get to the seashore, to smell the sea winds and to feel seawater on their skin. Wouldn't it be great if people with walking difficulty could also get closer to the ocean to enjoy the thrill of a sunset, watching the sun’s rays light up the waves? The good news is that things are moving in the right direction!
In a CDC study, around 14% of adults in the US report a mobility disability, defined as serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs. This can make vacation planning a challenge and put some destinations off-limits. But technology companies like Mobi-mat are making a day at the beach for people with limited mobility a reality.
Mobi-mat has developed some exciting innovations like non-slip roll-out accessibility mats(垫子). These function like red carpets at movie premieres(首映), taking people with special needs right to the seashore. They are made of a fine nylon material that is designed for people who use wheelchairs or may otherwise need a firmer surface to cross the sand.
More cities are working to make enjoyment of the beach much more wide-ranging in other creative ways based on regional conditions. The town of Jupiter in Florida has opened up access to its beaches to people who have trouble going up and down stairs via three new wide wooden walkovers. The Miami Herald recently reported on the upcoming construction of a wheelchair-accessible beachfront observation platform, and upgraded park with adaptive playground and exercise equipment for people with disabilities in Miami Beach.
Inspired by creative innovation, forward-looking policymakers and companies, and the shared demands of disabled people who are calling for better access to beautiful beach locations, it seems that many more people of all abilities will be able to head to the beach.
28. What is the good news mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. The seashore becomes the hottest destination.
B. The ocean environment changes for the better.
C. Beaches are more accessible to the disabled.
D. Approaching the sea benefits disabled people.
29. What can we learn about the mat from Mobi-mat?
A. It offers a firm surface. B. It originates from movies.
C. It replaces wheelchairs. D. It functions beneath the sand.
30. What can be inferred about the measures in Jupiter and Miami?
A. They’re well behind schedule.
B. They center on ocean protection.
C. They need to be more creative.
D. They're tailored to local conditions.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce a friendly move.
B. To recommend a treatment.
C. To advertise beautiful beaches.
D. To report findings of a study.
D
People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds? Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate(激发)similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a major factor.
A total of 622 people took part in the study. All of the volunteers came from one of three locations:two suburban college towns in the US (one in Arkansas and the other in Michigan), or the rural Chinese village of Dimen. It’s worth noting that the main language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China. Locals there have little contact with Western media or culture at all. All participants listened to the exact same 32“musical stimuli”——which were 60-second cuts of instrumental music. Half of these pieces came from Western music while the rest came from Chinese music.
After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their heads while listening. Incredibly, people from Arkansas and Michigan often described very similar stories, even using the exact same words frequently. Dimen listeners, on the other hand, envisioned stories that were similar to each other but quite different from the American listeners. More specifically, one track led t Americans seeing a cowboy in the hot desert surveying an empty town. Meanwhile, Chinese participants imagined a man in ancient times reflecting on the loss of a loved one.
“There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way, over headphones. But it turns out, it’s still a shared experience, almost like a shred dream, although not universally shared, ”says Elizabeth Margulis, the study author.
The results paint a more complex picture of music's power. Music can generate remarkably similar stories in listeners’ minds, but it depends on a common set of cultural experiences. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also be true-it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture.
32. What is the probable reason for Dimen being selected for the study?
A. Its unique cultural background. B. Its close contact with US.
C. Its complex language system. D. Its long tradition of music.
33. What were the participants required to do after listening to music?
A. Exchange their comments on the scene.
B. Imagine musicians' original inspiration.
C. Describe the picture forming in mind.
D. Recall personal music-related stories.
34. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 4?
A. Strange. B. Individual. C. Outdated. D. Polite.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Unbelievable? Music’s Effects Go beyond Cultures
B. Problem Solved! How Music Brings Us All Together
C. Amazing! Cultures Determine Our Preference for Music
D. Universal Language? Culture Matters When We Hear Music

Canada is considered one of the most fascinating countries in the world and attracts numerous tourists from all over the world every year. 36 Here are some tips on how to make your trip budget-friendly.
First, adopt economical ways to get around. Driving is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to get around Canada. If you live close to Canada, you can drive your own car through customs and border control, or you can rent a car. 37 Though it tends to be slower, tickets are extremely cheap, especially when booked in advance. What’s more, you can travel by train across Canada and along the coasts, which is one of the most cost-friendly ways to see the country.

To have fun, go to music, art, and food festivals. Especially during the summer, most large cities have a variety of outdoor festivals with free entrance. 39 You can also visit museums, art galleries, and universities. Art and history are extremely important cultural aspects of life in Canada, so there are many free or low-cost museums and galleries to visit. Additionally, most universities offer free tours of their campuses. 40
Keep these tips in mind, and even if you’re on a tight budget, you can spend time in major cities in Canada, enjoy the outdoors, and experience the unique culture of the country.
A. Some of them include small museums or historical landmarks.
B. As for accommodation, use home sharing services like Airbnb.
C. Domestic tourism industry has also boomed in Canada in recent years.
D. Besides, visit local websites to find the best hotels topping tourists’ list.
E. If you are longing for a trip to Canada but on a tight budget, don’t worry.
F. Take advantage of the opportunity to see local artists and sample Canadian cuisine!

The little country schoolhouse was heated by an old-fashioned, pot-bellied coal stove (火炉). An eight-year-old boy named Glenn Cunningham had the job of coming to school early each day so that he could use kerosene(煤油)to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and his classmates arrived.
One cold morning, someone mistakenly filled the kerosene container he used with gas, and disaster struck. The class and teacher arrived to find the schoolhouse enveloped in a big fire. Terrified on realizing that Glenn was inside, they rushed in and managed to drag the unconscious(无意识的)little boy out of the flaming building more dead than alive. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was rushed to a nearby county hospital.
From his bed, the seriously burned, half-conscious little boy faintly heard the doctor talking to his heart-broken mother. The doctor told his mother that her son would surely die-which might be for the best, really-for the terrible fire had ruined the lower half of his body. From the waist down, Glenn had no ability to move at all. His thin, scarred legs just hung there, all but lifeless.
But the brave boy didn't want to die. Glenn made up his mind that he would survive. And somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive.
Returning home, Glenn was seen either in a wheelchair or in bed. One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. Over the grass and the strong white fence bordering their lot, he watched other boys playing joyfully. He couldn't help looking back on the happy days before the disaster. With his thoughts wandering back to those old golden memories, this brave little boy made up his mind.
