Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur(创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.
It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.
With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting trials to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.
Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product—CanCandy.
As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
Meanwhile, with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy’s profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

Did you know that horses talk? Well, they do, and you can lean to understand “horse talk” if you pay close attention to the horses you see.
When horses live in the wild, other animals try to eat them, so a lot of horse talk is about staying alive. Even now, when most horses live on farms, they watch for danger. For this reason, never walk behind a horse. If you surprise it, the horse might mistake you for a mountain lion or wolf and give a dangerous kick.
By watching the ears of a horse, you can get clues to what it's hearing. A horse can turn each ear in a different direction. For a wild horse, this trick is important for survival. The horse can hear something sneaking up behind it while also checking out a threatening noise in front. When a horse lets its ears down, it's feeling safe and relaxed. If horses become isolated, they neigh, or “whinny,” calling for company. They're saying, “Where are you? I'm over here!” If a horse snorts(哼) while holding its head high and staring at something, it's saying, “That looks dangerous. Get ready to run!” When two horses meet, they put their noses together and smell each other's breath. It's their way of asking, “Are you a friend?” Horses nicker, too. Nickering is a quiet sort of sound. This friendly noise means they're feeling secure and saying, “Clad to see you.”
In the wild, horses live in herds, with all members watching for danger. In a herd, only one horse is the leader, the “boss hoss”. The “boss hoss” is usually an older female. She watches for threats and teaches younger horses how to behave. However, others may want her job. When that happens, she pins her ears back against her head and may even bite or kick to get challengers to back off. She's using body language to say, “Hey, I'm in charge here!” All horses know that the one who makes others move is the leader. Horses relate to people that way, too.
Horses have a language of their own. Now you know a bit of what they might be saying.
8. What is the general idea of this passage?
A. Horses can talk with their owners.
B. You can know a bit of horses' language.
C. Horses can “talk” in their own way.
D. Other animals can also learn language.
9. What does the underlined word “isolated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Lonely. B. Glad.
C. Sad. D. Frightened.
10. What will a horse do when he wants to know whether another horse is a friend?
A. He will let his ears down.
B. He and another horse will put their noses together and smell each other's breath.
C. They both will hold their heads high and stare at something.
D. He will give another horse a dangerous kick.
11. How will the “boss hoss” deal with her challengers?
A. By warning or fighting.
B. By watching for threats.
C. By teaching younger horses how to behave.
D. By relating to people.

Royal family gather at Windsor Castle for first Easter Sunday service without the Queen on April 9th. Attendees and members of the royal family wore a variety of stylish hats throughout the ceremony. It is a requirement for all women to wear hats on royal occasions. This rule dates back to the 1950s when upper class and royal women would rarely show their hair in public, according to the BBC.
Hats were originally worn for practical reasons such as protection from the sun, rain or cold weather, but quickly people wore them for other purposes. The top hat, for example, was reserved for upper-class men and was worn at formal events such as weddings and horse races. Women also used hats to signify social status, wealth and fashion. The larger the hat, the wealthier the wearer was believed to be.
In addition to status, hats played an important role in British social etiquette. Men were expected to remove their hats indoors, especially in formal settings, to show respect. Women, on the other hand, were to wear their hats until seated for dinner, but then they were expected to remove them.
But hats were not always a symbol of status and etiquette. The bowler hat, created in 1849, was worn by the working class, especially those involved in transportation. The bowler hat became an iconic item of British fashion, worn by both men and women.
Today, hats continue to be an essential part of British culture, with many old and new hat shops throughout the country. The fedora is also making a comeback among younger gen-erations. Shopping in hat shops provides you with a glimpse of British hat. Caps, trilbies, beanies, and berets are just some of the styles available.
12. What is the significance of the top hat in British culture?
A. It was worn by the working class.
B. It was a personal statement of fashion.
C. It was used to protect people from the rain.
D. It was worn at formal events and signified wealth.
13. What does the underlined word “etiquette” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Routine. B. Practice. C. Manners. D. Origin.
14. Which hat was popular among postmen and train drivers in Britain?
A. Top hat. B. Fedora. C. Bowler hat. D. Beret.
15. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To attract more visitors to Britain.
B. To introduce the hat culture in British.
C. To show his or her opinions on British hats.
D. To tell an interesting story about British hats.
D 13. C 14. C 15. B

第二段提到“The top hat, for example, was reserved for upper-class men and was worn at formal events such as weddings and horse races. Women also used hats to signify social status, wealth and fashion. The larger the hat, the wealthier the wearer was believed to be.”
第三段提到“ Men were expected to remove their hats indoors, especially in formal settings, to show respect. Women, on the other hand, were to wear their hats until seated for dinner, but then they were expected to remove them.”(在室内,尤其是在正式场合,男性被要求脱帽以示尊重。
第四段提到“The bowler hat, created in 1849, was worn by the working class, especially those involved in transportation. ”(圆顶硬礼帽发明于1849年,是工人阶级,尤其是从事交通运输工人所戴的。)由此判断,硬圆礼帽是工人阶层戴的帽子样式,因此postmen and train drivers in Britain (英国的邮递员和火车司机)最有可能佩戴的帽子为bowler hat(圆顶硬礼帽)。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。第一段由英国王室出席仪式时的戴帽礼仪引出了英国关于戴帽子的历史。结合全文以及最后一段“Today, hats continue to be an essential part of British culture, with many old and new hat shops throughout the country. ”(今天,帽子仍然是英国文化的重要组成部分,全国各地有许多新旧帽子店。)由此判断,这篇文章目的在于介绍英国帽子文化。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
续写的词数应为150左右。
The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama top underneath, and instead of white school shoes, he had on a pair of bright green sandals that were two sizes too big. The physics teacher's hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi mumbled,‘Sorry, teacher,’ and scuttled (快步疾走) to his seat. Mr. Tan glared at the rest of the students. The chuckles quickly faded away. Mohi's classmates always looked forward to Mondays. Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi' slate arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day, it was the pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily. Students passing by in buses would yell his name in unison (一起) just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus, he would wave good-naturedly. Although Mohi was likable, he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time. Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday, Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi's house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. Mohi must be listening to music, he thought. The gate was not locked. Hamed let himself in. He called Mohi's name a few times but there was no response. The music played on. Hamed peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room, Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played flawlessly (完美无瑕地), so much so that it sounded like a recording. Hamed left quietly.
Paragraph 1 When Teacher's Day came around, Hamed had a plan.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2 As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Teacher's Day came around, Hamed had a plan. It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers. Every class had to contribute an item. Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform. Short of ideas, the class agreed. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school's clumsiest student walking on stage with a violin. When he started to play, the audience fell silent. Jaws dropped.
As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. After the performance, shy and silent as Mohi was, he gave Hamed a big hug. Love may be silent, but it was always there. Since then, Mohi and Hamed have been best friends. With the encouragement of Hamed, Mohi has pursued his dream of being a musician. Not only do friends keep us company but also help us to be a better self.
