In casual conversations, there is a seemingly simple question I can never answer without hesitating — “Where are you from?”
I could say I am from Thailand, where I was born. Or I am from Mexico, where I spent the majority of my childhood. Or I am from the US, whose language is rooted into my life. In my mind, none of these answers are satisfying enough. After all, to be from somewhere carries expectations of understanding “your” culture and “your” home.
I feel envious whenever my friends say they’re “going home” for school breaks. As a student who frequently moves, I have never seen my living space as “home”, but “shelter”, another location to stay in before I unavoidably move again.
So, does this mean I do not have, and will never have, a home? I resign myself to living with this sense of sadness, until very recently.
In my dorm, inside my drawer is a specially designed white bath towel that I have not used since I brought it with me from my parents’ house. One day, I took it out, but stopped after smelling the soft, sweet laundry detergent (洗衣粉), the one my parents used back in Thailand. I felt my eyes water as that random smell brought my mixed emotions to the surface: sadness and nostalgia, a strong feeling of missing home. I still avoid using that towel until now because I don’t want to replace the smell of nostalgia with my newly-bought detergent.
Sadly, even with this new discovery, I will still struggle when answering where I am from, and I will always feel a sense of loss in not having a physical home to “go back to”. Yet, in random moments, when a smell catches me off guard (让我猝不及防) with the memories it brings, I like to believe that the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. And if these moments can make me smile, even with a sense of loss, what better home can I ask for?
4. Why is the author unable to see his living space as “home”?
A. His living places often change. B. He is unsatisfied with the place.
C. His expectations of “home” are high. D. He can’t understand the culture there.
5. Why does the author treasure that towel?
A. It was made in his hometown. B. It is a present from his parents.
C. Its smell awakened his memories. D. Its design wins his preference.
6. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. He no longer feels a sense of loss.
B. He feels a physical home is unnecessary.
C. He has got the answer to “Where are you from?”
D. He has found a sense of home in some moments.
7. What can be the best title of the text?
A. A Man’s Home Is His Castle B. There Is No Place Like Home
C. The Smell Brings Me Home D. The Emotion Connects Me With Home
A 5. C 6. D 7. C

根据第三段末句“As a student who frequently moves, I have never seen my living space as “home”, but “shelter”, another location to stay in before I unavoidably move again. (作为一个经常搬家的学生,我从来没有把我的生活空间看作是“家”,而是“庇护所”,在我不可避免地再次搬家之前,我可以呆在另一个地方)”可知,作者经常搬家是他不把住的地方当“家”的主要原因。故选A。
根据第五段第二三句“One day, I took it out, but stopped after smelling the soft, sweet laundry detergent(洗衣粉), the one my parents used back in Thailand. I felt my eyes water as that random smell brought my mixed emotions to the surface: sadness and nostalgia, a strong feeling of missing home.(有一天,我把它拿出来,但在闻到了柔软、甜美的洗衣粉后就停了下来,我父母在泰国用的就是这种洗衣粉。我觉得我的眼睛湿润了,因为那随意的气味把我复杂的情绪带到了表面:悲伤和怀旧,一种强烈的思念家的感觉)”可知,浴巾上面的味道使作者想起了过往。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段第二句“Yet, in random moments, when a smell catches me off guard (让我猝不及防) with the memories it brings, I like to believe that the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home. (然而,在偶然的时刻,当一种气味带着它带来的记忆让我猝不及防时,我愿意相信我当时的感觉就是人们在家时的感觉)”可知,现在在某些瞬间,一些熟悉的味道使作者想起了被他认为是有关“家”的感觉。故选D。
【7题详解】
标题判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段第二句“Yet, in random moments, when a smell catches me off guard (让我猝不及防) with the memories it brings, I like to believe that the things I feel then are things people feel when they are home.(然而,在偶然的时刻,当一种气味带着它带来的记忆让我猝不及防时,我愿意相信我当时的感觉就是人们在家时的感觉)”可知,作者是一个经常搬家的人,所以一直以来对家的概念很模糊。

Millions of us may lose sleep as most states switch to DST, Daylight Saving Time (夏令时) and put the clocks forward by one hour. The time change brings darker mornings and extends light in the evening.
Some policymakers want to make DST permanent to avoid the disturbance of constant switches. Marco Rubio, a government officer, says the formality of changing our clocks twice a year makes no sense. He points to the potential economic benefits DST brings. The key argument is that more light in the evening can stimulate people to go out and that translates into more people shopping in convenience stores for everything from water to sports drinks. Thus, there is a boom in spending.
However, the health impacts have been more complicated to figure out. DST increases evening exposure to light, which can make it harder to fall asleep at night. So in recent years, the time change has been reported to be linked to an increase in atrial fibrillation, a type of heart disease, perhaps due to the sleep disorder. Besides, evidences have linked the transition to an increase in attention problems and mood disorders.
“I am very surprised,” says Jay Chudow, a cardiologist. “It’s just a one-hour change, but this shows how sensitive our bodies maybe to internal clock (生物钟) interruption.” Actually humans’ internal clock is closely linked to the rising and setting of the sun. He emphasizes that restoring permanent Year-Round Standard Time (YRST) is the best option for our health and well-being, for the natural daily cycle of light and darkness is really the most powerful timing reminder that we have to match our body clock with.
So it seems there’s a divide between what’s likely best for our health and what may be good for the economy. Due to the economic burden and tight budget, it is not hard to guess which one will be given higher priority among policymakers this year.
8. What benefit does DST bring?
A. Boosting consumption. B. Lengthening daytime.
C. Avoiding constant switches. D. Brightening the mornings.
9. What does the underlined word “transition” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Impact. B. Exposure. C. Disorder. D. Change.
10. What does Jay think of DST?
A. It helps restore energy. B. It raises health concerns.
C. It is a timing reminder. D. It matches humans’ body clock.
11. What will the policymakers probably do this year?
A. Choose DST. B. Adopt YRST.
C. Tighten the economy. D. Increase funds on healthcare.
A 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中的“He points to the potential economic benefits DST brings. The key argument is that more light in the evening can stimulate people to go out and that translates into more people shopping in convenience stores for everything from water to sports drinks. Thus, there is a boom in spending.(他指出了夏令时带来的潜在经济效益。关键的论点是,晚上更多的光线可以刺激人们外出,这意味着更多的人在便利店购买从水到运动饮料的各种商品。因此,出现了消费热潮)”可知,夏令时可以促进消费,故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段的“DST increases evening exposure to light, which can make it harder to fall asleep at night. So in recent years, the time change has been reported to be linked to an increase in atrial fibrillation, a type of heart disease, perhaps due to the sleep disorder. (夏令时增加了晚上接触光线的时间,这会让人在晚上更难入睡。近年来,据报道,时间的变化与心房颤动的增加有关,心房颤动是一种心脏病,可能是由于睡眠障碍)”可知,夏令时(这种时间上的转变)可能会导致心脏问题和睡眠紊乱。由此可知,已有证据表明,这种转变也可能会导致注意力问题和情绪问题,因此与“transition”意思最接近的应该是“change”。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段Jay的观点“It’s just a one-hour change, but this shows how sensitive our bodies may be to internal clock (生物钟) interruption.(这只是一个小时的变化,但这表明我们的身体对生物钟中断有多敏感)”推知,Jay认为夏令时可能会导致健康问题,故选B。
根据文章最后一段的“Due to the economic burden and tight budget, it is not hard to guess which one will be given higher priority among policymakers this year.(在经济负担和预算紧张的情况下,不难猜测,今年政策制定者将更重视哪一个)”可知,当前经济不景气,因此政策制定者很可能会采用夏令时来刺激经济,故选A。
D
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have become extremely powerful, surprising even their creators. Most people have probably read a book or seen a movie about an AI or robot that has become so smart that it can take over the world. The AI in stories like these is known as AGI or Artificial General Intelligence. True AGI would be intelligent in many different areas and would be able to learn on its own. Currently, there is no real AGI. Most experts believe it will be many years before an AGI could possibly be created.
Scientists have been working to improve AI models, mainly by training the models on larger and larger collections of information. Those efforts are paying off. The AI tool that has gotten the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company Open AI. ChatGPT appears to be extremely intelligent, which answers quickly in perfect sentences, makes up stories and games, writes essays and much more. Another powerful model called GPT-4 is also developed by the same company. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests.
The rapid progress of recent A I models worries some people. Last week, many computer experts released a letter calling for a six-month pause in any work on AI tools stronger than GPT-4.
The letter claimed AI companies were in a race to create “powerful digital minds” that no one could “understand, predictor control”. The group behind the letter wants government s to develop laws to make sure A I tools are safe. Not all AI experts agree with the letter. Some say the letter makes today’s AI tools sound more intelligent than they really are. Others say it’s more important to worry about real problems in current AI tools rather than imaginary ones in the future.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing powerful AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warming that many people—including leaders—will be thinking about carefully.
12. Why are the book and movie mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To show the surprising power of AI.
B. To clarify AI will take over the world.
C. To state the threat of A I to its creators.
D. To indicate an AI or robot is smart enough.
13 What can be inferred about ChatGPT from Paragraph 2?
A. It offers practical instructions on essay-writing skills.
B. It trains AI models on how to present information.
C. It has difficulty in understanding jokes.
D. It produces perfect language response.
14 What’s the letter’s attitude to Chat GPT?
A. In different. B. Favorable. C. Concerned. D. Disappointed.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why AI tools are beneficial to us.
B. Why AI tools are accessible to the public.
C. Whether AI tools are having a bright future.
D. Whether AI tools are becoming too powerful.
A 13. D 14. C 15. D

Unlike other natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes are very hard to see coming, even for scientists.___16___Thus, specific practices for earthquake preparedness are necessary. Here are four steps you can take to prepare yourself in advance.
Drop, cover and hold
If you feel the ground start to shake, drop, take cover under as table piece of furniture, and hold on. You can hide under something like a desk or table, with one arm holding on to a leg of the table and your other arm protecting your neck and head.___17___In modem homes, it is no stronger than any other part of the house and will not protect you from injury.
Make a family plan
___18___Create a meeting point—somewhere easy for everyone to remember, or you could also meet at home. Whatever plan you decide on, don’t rely on your phone as your main form of communication. Technology fails all the time in disasters. A major earthquake in California, for example, damaged cell towers and knocked out communication services for days.
Secure your furniture
Those hanging shelves above your bed could be a danger during an earthquake. People often get injured from “flying or falling objects” like furniture or glass during earthquakes. So examine your home and ask yourself, “What could be a potential danger to my safety?”___19___
Make digital copies of important documents
Important documents may get destroyed during earthquakes. Therefore, scan or take photos of your important documents, such as your license, financial records and insurance policy information.___20___This step can help ensure your documents will be available even if your computer is lost in a quake.
A. Then send them to your e-mail.
B. These are all important personal documents.
C. Make sure your household has a plan of action.
D. Whatever you do, do not stand in a doorframe.
E. If you find the answer, you need to runaway immediately.
F. Nowadays early detection systems can only give seconds of warming ahead.
G. If possible, remove those heavy and big objects above your bed immediately.
F 17. D 18. C 19. G 20. A

空处为句子谓语动词,根据时间状语in the past several years可知应用现在完成时,主语slow-moving Qigong表示单数概念,且与 become 是主谓关系,故填 has become。

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7gavemean invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder, I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating! Among various colorful flowers danced butterflies. With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods. Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What’s worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help, frightened and helpless, but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed Mom’s reminder!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mom! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from. Behind a tree appeared my mother. She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt. “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face, she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever.
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. I summoned up my courage and decided to take a chance. Hardly had I entered the woods when I was totally attracted by the sight. The wandering clouds, the blooming flowers and the vigorous trees all kept me spellbound. At the sight of a beautiful butterfly, I tiptoed along the path, bent over, cupped my hands gently and danced with it down the track. Time flew and before I knew it, I was deep in the woods, unable to find the way out. With a feeling of horror totally holding me in its power, I squatted down under a tree, tears rolling down my cheeks.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. Hearing my mom’s voice, I yelled in a quivering tone, rushed towards her direction and threw my arms around her. Noticing my misty eyes, she patted me on the shoulders and checked whether I got hurt. Choked with emotion, I whispered, “I am OK, Mom. I will never go into the woods without your company and permission.” Shooting me an approving look, she added, “Next time you want to come, keep me informed!” In the setting sun, we headed back and this time, I held my mom’s hand tightly.
