A new study led by researchers at the University f Califrnia, Riverside, has fund expsure t third-hand smke (THS) causes skin diseases.
The study — the first t lk at humans expsed t THS — invlved 10 healthy nn-smkers wearing clthing with either filtered (过滤的) air r THS chemicals. The investigatin lasted three hurs, during which participants wuld either walk r run fr 15 minutes per hur — this wuld make them sweat and increase the levels f THS ptentially taken in thrugh the skin. Bld samples were cllected, which were measured t see whether THS may have caused cell r tissue damage.
“We fund THS expsure caused damage t DNA, lipids (脂质), and prteins, and the damage remained even after the expsure stpped,” said Shane Sakamaki-Ching, a dctr f bilgy and the first authr f the study. “Cigarette smkers shw the same result.” The study shwed expsure t THS increases signals related with skin diseases, which makes sense: the rgan mst likely t cme int cntact with THS is yur skin, and s it receives the biggest expsure t the harmful chemicals. “Hwever, what’s even mre wrrying is the tendency t lead t cancer,” added Sakamaki-Ching.
“If yu buy a used car previusly wned by a smker, yu are putting yurself at sme health risk,” said Prue Talbt, a prfessr f cell bilgy at UC Riverside and the crrespnding authr f the study. “If yu g t a restaurant that allws smking, yu are expsing yur skin t THS. The same applies t staying in a htel rm that was previusly ccupied by a smker.”
All that came frm just three hurs’ investigatin. And if yu think e-cigarette smkers are being frgtten, fear nt: the team’s next prject is t take a lk at which remains are left by these less-deadly death sticks.
Sakamaki-Ching said, “Our findings can help physicians in checking patients expsed t THS and help develp plicies imprving indr envirnments plluted by THS.”
Why were the participants in the study asked t take exercise?
A. T keep themselves energetic.B. T speed up bld prductin.

Nn-smkers must keep ff smkers fr health.

The 31,000-year-ld skeletn ( 骨 骼 ) f a yung adult fund in Indnesia reveals the ldest knwn evidence f an amputatin (截肢), accrding t a new study.
“We were explring a cave in Brne, in a rainfrest regin, fr sme f the earliest rck art in the wrld, when we came
acrss the burial site and the skeletn, which then excited ur curisity,” said Tim Malney, the study’s lead researcher. Thugh much f the skeletn was cmplete, it missed its left ft and the lwer part f its left leg, he explained. After examining the remains, the researchers cncluded the ft bnes weren’t lst in the site r in an accident — they were carefully remved. The remaining leg bne shwed a clean cut.
Researchers believed the find presents a remarkable deed. It’s tricky and demanding t prevent infectin in amputatins, even t this day. Yet mre than 30,000 years ag smene was able t handle it. Researchers didn’t knw what tl was used t cut the bdy parts, but they assumed a sharp stne tl may have made the cut. What seems certain is that the patient enjyed great pst-perative care fr cnsiderable time, fr the persn appeared t have lived fr arund six t nine mre years after being disabled.
The peratin’s gd end result is nt pure chance. It implies that the persn wh perfrmed the peratin had sme understanding f antimicrbial (抗菌的) medicine. In this respect, their lifestyle and frest envirnment might have prved t be advantages. “Given these peple lived in an area with many medicinal plants, there is a strng case t guess that adapting t this envirnment may have bsted the develpment f advanced medical knwledge,” Malney said.
The surgery rewrites the histry f human medical develpments. Befre this find, the earliest example f amputatin had been in a French farmer frm almst 7,000 years ag. Researchers had believed advanced medical practice develped arund 10,000 years ag, as humans settled dwn int agricultural scieties. But this study adds t evidence that humans started caring fr each ther’s health lng befre that.
What did Malney say abut the skeletn?
A. It is preserved prly.B. It is fund by accident.
C. It needs further study.D. It shws ancient wisdm.
Which part f the amputatin is difficult accrding t the researchers?
A. Seeking prper tls.B. Keeping the cut clean.
C. Aviding the infectin.D. Prviding pst-perative care.
What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
A. Reasns fr the surgery’s success.B. Gegraphical features f Brne.
C. Knwledge f plants’ medicinal use.D. Benefits f the frest envirnment.
What des the discvery f the skeletn shw?
Brne is the surce f surgical amputatin.
Amputatin is cmmn fr prehistric peple.
Ancient agriculture prmted medical develpment.
Humans made advanced medical practice earlier than thught.
