    B. It becomes easier if you use it a lot.
    C. It is helpful in learning other subjects.

    A. French. B. German. C. Italian.
    【答案】13. C 14. B 15. B 16. A
    【解析】
【原文】M: It’s so hard to learn a new language. It gives me a headache. Why can’t we just pick it up from TV?
W: Usually, children learn languages much quicker than adults.
    M: Why is that?
W: I think it’s because children are always ready to learn new things, especially since most things are new to them. You know, their brains are still developing.
M: But people forget how to use languages, too.
W: That’s true. I knew an Italian woman who spoke perfect English. She moved to a country that spoke Span - ish. At first, she kept her English, but later she forgot it because she didn’t speak it for a long time.
M: So, it’s like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.
W: I think experiences help, too. If you have good experiences in learning a foreign language, it stays with you. I knew a Dutch boy who learned opera in Italian, history in German and art in French. When he discussed any of those subjects, he spoke in that specific language.

    【解析】
【原文】Good morning, class. Today, I want to talk about Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest composers in the world. He was born in 1770 and died at 57. He wrote about 700 works, and he is remembered for the many that are still played today. He learned how to write music from another great writer, Joseph Haydn, and he studied the works of Mozart and Bach. In his early years, he copied the style of Haydn and Mozart, but later he put a lot more emotion into his music. He worked hard to spread his music, and he was known in his day for his great piano playing. He was very much a part of his time, and during his life, literature and art also became wilder and more emotional. That is why we call that time “The Romantic Period”. In his later years, he became deaf, which is a terrible thing to happen to a man who lives to create music. But he continued writing, and many of his best loved works were written when he could no longer hear them.

There was something about me that most people considered “different”. I was not comfortable hugging friends, but I did love listening to discussions about politics. I was very talkative and curious, which seemed to wear out the patience of my friends and sometimes even the adults around me. I stuck out from my classmates, but I was learning to be less remarkable. It wasn’t until decades later that I learned my uniqueness has a name: autism (自闭症). My diagnosis (诊断) at 46 was like discovering a missing piece of my brain, picking it up, putting it in place, and feeling whole for the first time. What I’ve found out since is that there are a significant number of others like me—individuals who weren’t identified as having autism until midlife.
In my 20s, I found work in a university fundraising program. I was good at my job. When I became a full-time master's degree student, I consulted a doctor about my growing anxiety. But autism never entered the conversation. In early 2017, I began a new job in which I was recognized as never before, and I didn’t know how to deal with it. As I neared the end of my one-year work, all the symptoms (症状) of my undiagnosed condition exposed themselves in my work environment: sensory overload and being confused by office politics. Then, two months later, I received my diagnosis. Finally everything started to make sense.
Today, I am an enterpriser. My new firm is called Liberty Co., to signify that facing the facts brings us freedom. Our goal is to increase the population of autism people in the work-place. It provides a chance for me to be a supporter for women with autism, including as a participant in research into autistic women’s experiences in the workplace.
Self-awareness is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Knowing my strengths as well as my limitations, both related and unrelated to my autism, has allowed me to build my self- esteem (自尊) and connect with others.

Bottlenose dolphins simplify and raise the pitch of their whistles to be heard above underwater shipping noise, Christopher Intagliata reports.
The oceans are getting louder. And coastal areas are some of the noisiest, as in this underwater recording, captured 17 miles off the coast of Ocean City, Maryland.
The noise could be a problem for marine mammals, which, like us, use sound to communicate. “Just like if we’re in a noisy bar, we have to shout to each other. And they might have to do that too.” Helen Bailey is a marine biologist at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science.
She and her colleagues recorded two months of underwater sounds, in that same area off the coast of Maryland. They used an automated software to fish out 200 bottlenose dolphin whistles from the noise, and visually compared the spectrograms (声谱图). Here’s a normal whistle.
But what they found was that dolphins dumbed down the complexity of their whistles and raised their pitch, when they were competing with shipping noise, which apparently helps, but could also hurt, their ability to communicate.
“By using simpler calls, yes, there is a risk they’re not communicating as much information as they would if it was quieter. Also for younger dolphins they actually learn these sounds from hearing other dolphins. So they’re hearing this much simpler language.”
The results and a few of those spectrograms are in the journal Biology Letters. [Leila Fouda et al., dolphins simplify their vocal calls in response to increased noise]
The survey site is the proposed future home of a wind farm—which could mean lots of noise as the huge towers are installed. Until then, it’s the chronic roar of ships and boats that Bailey wants people to think about carefully. “I think people think about boats in terms of the emissions, just like with cars. And I think what we need to think about is that sound is also an emission.”
    28. When will the bottlenose dolphins raise their tune according to the text?
    A. When they want to catch more fish in the sea.
    B. When they have to compete with ship noise.
    C. When they want to sing loud songs with others.
    D. When they feel angry with the ships.
    29. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Marine mammals. B. The dolphins.
    C. Human beings. D. Sea animals.
    30. What will happen to the bottlenose dolphins if the situation continues?
    A. More and more bottlenose dolphins will love to make loud noise.
    B. People will lose the bottlenose dolphins forever.
    C. They will have to make long journeys in the ocean.
    D. They will lose the ability to convey complex information.
    31. What is the best title for the text?
    A. How To Protect The Marine Mammals—Bottlenose Dolphins
    B. Bottlenose Dolphins Raise The Tune To Help The Wind Farm
    C. Bottlenose Dolphins Raise The Tune To Communicate With Ships
    D. Bottlenose Dolphins Make Easy Calls Above Under Ship Noise
    【答案】28. B 29. A 30. D 31. D
根据第五段“But what they found was that dolphins dumbed down the complexity of their whistles and raised their pitch, when they were competing with shipping noise, which apparently helps, but could also hurt, their ability to communicate.(但他们发现,当海豚与船运噪音竞争时,它们会降低口哨的复杂程度,提高音调,这显然有助于但也可能损害它们的沟通能力)”可知,当海豚和船运噪音竞争时,他们就提高音调。故选B。
    【29题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线单词前面的句子“The noise could be a problem for marine mammals, which, like us, use sound to communicate. Just like if we’re in a noisy bar, we have to shout to each other.(噪音可能是海洋哺乳动物的一个问题,它们和我们一样,使用声音进行交流。就像我们在一个嘈杂的酒吧里,我们必须互相喊叫) ”可知,噪音对海洋的哺乳动物也是一个问题,就像人类在一个嘈杂的酒吧里必须互相喊叫一样,哺乳动物也必须提高音调,所以they指代上文提到的“海洋哺乳动物”。故选A。
    【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段““By using simpler calls, yes, there is a risk they’re not communicating as much information as they would if it was quieter. Also for younger dolphins they actually learn these sounds from hearing other dolphins. So they’re hearing this much simpler language.”(“通过使用更简单的叫声,是的,它们可能无法像安静时那样交流更多的信息。此外,对于年轻的海豚来说,它们实际上是通过听其他海豚的声音来学习这些声音的。因此,它们正在听这种更简单的语言。”)”可推知,如果海洋噪音的情况继续恶化,那么海豚将失去传达复杂信息的能力。故选D。
    【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“Bottlenose dolphins simplify and raise the pitch of their whistles to be heard above underwater shipping noise, Christopher Intagliata reports.(Christopher Intagliata报道说,宽吻海豚简化并提高了它们的哨声音调,以便在水下航行有噪音的情况下被伙伴听到。)”
    D
The Proboscis Monkey is a medium-sized primate (灵长类动物) that is found in the rainforests of Borneo. The male Proboscis Monkey is much larger than the female measuring up to 76 cm in height and weighing more than 20 kg, both having a long tail which can easily be the same length as the body and is used to help the Proboscis Monkey to balance while it is jumping through the trees. Adults are mainly pale orange to light brown in color with a richer colored head and shoulders and grey limbs and tail, and a light pink face. The nose of the monkey develops with age. Although scientists are still unsure as to exactly why the nose of the Proboscis Monkey grows so big, it is widely believed to do with attracting a female mate.
The Proboscis Monkey is native to the island of Borneo. Due to their leaf-eating diet it’s most commonly found in mangrove swamps (红树沼泽地), but is also known to live in coastal mangroves, riverine forests and lowland rainforest providing that there’s a good source of fresh water.
The Proboscis Monkey lives in groups that contain between 2-30 individuals including a dominant male, with up to 10 female and their young. Female Proboscis Monkey tend to lead the searches for food and care for the young and the male defends his group by making loud honking sounds and showing his teeth. Proboscis Monkey groups are known to gather together when close to water or in an area where there is enough food, and at night when groups rest and sleep in the safety of the mangroves close to the water’s edge.
Young Proboscis Monkeys are cared for not just by their mother but also by the other adult females in the group, and will remain with their mother until they’re nearly a year old when young females tend to stay with the group and young males will leave to join a group of bachelor (单身汉) males. Although Proboscis Monkey groups tend to remain fairly stable, it’s not uncommon for both males and females to move to another group.
Today population numbers are thought to have dropped by up to 80% over the past 30 years and there’re thought to be around 7,000 Proboscis Monkeys left in the wild. Now, the Proboscis Monkey is listed by the IUCN as an endangered animal and could die out in the near future if better conservation measures aren’t put into place.
    32. What function does the Proboscis Monkeys’ long tail have?
    A. Helping them move faster. B. Helping them move steadily.
    C. Helping them find more food. D. Helping them attract the other sex.
    33. Paragraph 3 mainly shows the Proboscis Monkeys are .
    A. sociable animals B. productive animals
    C. endangered animals D. active animals
    34. A two-year-old male Proboscis Monkey is likely to .
    A. stay with his mother B. live with other males
    C. become head of a troop D. wander around alone
    35. What would be discussed next if the passage were unfinished?
    A. The lifestyle of the Proboscis Monkey.
    B. The appearance of the Proboscis Monkey.
    C. The preservation of the Proboscis Monkey.
    D. The relationship between the Proboscis Monkey and humans.

Should teens do housework after school?___36___Some might claim that doing housework is a waste of time, while others feel that housework is a good opportunity for teens to become more mature. As for me, I strongly argue that it is indeed necessary for teens to do household work to help develop a sense of responsibility.
First of all, to be responsible, teenagers should learn how to manage their time. ___37___When I was in senior high, I had to wash dishes every day. Therefore, I learned how to do my chores (家务) quickly to save more time for studying and relaxing. On the other hand, my little brother did not do any housework, so he always struggled to keep to his schedule.
___38___Doing household chores can train teens to become independent people. For instance, when my sister was in high school, she had to do her own washing and cleaning, and even cook her own food. As a result, she knew how to take care of herself. She rarely relied on anyone.
Finally, doing household chores can help teens become better leaders. ___39___When my family clean the house together, I often give orders and see everyone do his or her own work. My sister is in charge of dusting the floor, I clean the windows, and my brother takes out the waste. ___40___Moreover, statistics show that a lot of students who are class leaders often are responsible for the main household chores in their families.
    A. Take my personal experience for example.
    B. People adopt different stands toward this issue.
    C. Besides, being responsible means being independent.
    D. Parents feel angry if their teens don't help with the housework.
    E. Secondly, it gives teens the sense that they're part of the family.
    F. Doing household work can help them develop good time management skills.
    G. As a result, when I was selected as the leader in group projects, I felt confident about it.

I filled my whole childhood with two things. My love for red meat and football. Back then, my room walls were full of posters of my favorite player, Webster Slaughter.
One cold winter, I went with my dad to the nearby mall so he could buy a new coat. We didn’t have a lot of money, but my mom convinced my dad to replace his old coat, which had some pretty sizable holes. I was only eleven, but my memory of that day remains vivid. As we approached the mall, a huge figure caught my eyes. The man was wearing a black jacket and sunglasses, but I immediately recognized him. It was Webster Slaughter.
My heart pounding, I could barely contain my excitement. I looked up at my hero, and in a shaky voice said, “You're Webster Slaughter, right?"I excitedly told him that I was his big fan and he was my favorite player. He smiled but began to walk away saying being in a big hurry. Desperately,I yelled to his back for an autograph (亲笔签名),but he kept going. As fast as he had emerged, he was gone.
“Nothing really, he was in a hurry,” Dad comforted me gently. He dug into his pocket, pulled out a bunch of crumpled (皱巴巴的) bills and handed me a few dollars. He told me to go play at the arcade (拱廊) while he picked out a coat.I grabbed the money and wandered off. About half an hour later, my dad came for me and we headed home. Once there he opened the shopping bag in his hand.
He told me that he had a surprise and reached into it. “After you left, guess who I ran in- to?” he said with a smile on his face. I just stared blankly. “Webster Slaughter came into the store and said he saw me with you. He asked where you were and I said you were at the arcade. He said he went back to his car to get this for you, but you were gone.”
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】He pulled his hand out of the bag and in it was a Webster Slaughter’s signed photo. Glancing at the words “To my greatest fan.” on it, I was so overjoyed that I almost cried. I grabbed the picture and flew up the stairs to my room. Proudly, I placed the signed photo on my dresser. I just sat on my bed almost in tears and stared. It was hard to describe what I was feeling. Then I noticed something on the side. I looked closely at it and saw it was a small tag labeled $ 30.
My first emotion was anger that I had been cheated by my father. I stormed out of my room towards downstairs and yelled to my dad. There was no answer. Then I heard the metal sound of coming from outside and went to the window. I stared out of the frosted window at my dad, clearing the walkway with great efforts. He was wearing the same old coat with holes in the sleeves and back. I thank my dad for the unacknowledged sacrifices he made for me. I still have the picture of Webster Slaughter, but now on my dresser sits a picture of my dad and me.
