It was a bright spring afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, a doctor and his daughter, Ava, were taking full advantage of it. They were driving with the windows down as they headed home. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the sharp sound of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror, it slammed into a concrete barrier, flipped over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest dangling over the railing(栏杆) of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.
And then a scream came from the pickup. Bauer ran to it. The driver pointed down. In the water was a car seat. A girl, about two years old, was terrified, floating on her back, kicking and splashing and screaming.
Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t move. Maybe he was in shock.
He held no illusions about his chances jumping from this height into such shallow water. Four feet of depth was the most he could hope for. And were there rocks this close to the concrete pillar(柱子) of the bridge?
He climbed onto the railing and took a leap of faith. A moment later he was bouncing off the sandy bottom-unhurt! Bauer swam to the girl in a few quick strokes and lifted her out of the water: mouth half open, eyes nearly closed, not breathing. Standing, he laid her against his shoulder and hit her back with the flat of his hand. After several attempts, thankfully, her eyes were opened, focused on him. He pulled her close, hugging her to shield her from the cold.
Ava Bauer was so inspired by her father’s actions that four months later she became a firefighter so that she too could save lives.

With China’s large trade volume, the increased use of the Chinese currency renminbi (RMB) in international trade will help stabilize the international trading system, a leading business insider has said.
The RMB, or the yuan, is getting increasingly popular and acceptable as more and more countries are willing to sign currency exchange deals with China, and more countries are starting to use the currency to settle cross-border trade, said Wu Kegang, director of BCC LinkTo China, a partnership project between the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
“I think in the future, a large number of Chinese companies who are dealing with international trade probably will start using RMB as the currency of settlements,” Wu told Xinhua in a recent interview. “When that happens, then the Chinese currency would truly become the international currency of choice.”
Noting that China has been the largest trader of the world for several years, Wu told Xinhua that the speeding up of the currency’s internationalization is very timely and “doesn’t surprise me at all.”
He said the volume of China’s trade is seen as an important stabilizing factor of global trading system now, and the currency getting more involved in international trade will be able to help stabilize the international trading system and also boost confidence for the Chinese economy.
During the interview, he also refuted some negative reports about China from many international observers, “particularly they use the Western economic theory to monitor and observe Chinese economy.”
Wu, who just came back from a two-month trip in China, said the situation on the ground is a lot more stable. “The manufacturing, the economy is a lot more stable than the media have reported over the last three years,” he noted.
“The internationalization of the currency will also provide evidence for the outside world to see how strong and resilient (有弹性的) the economy is,” he said.

A.To introduce a leading business insider.
B.To warn people of the instability of Chinese economy.
C.To cast light on the potential impact of the Chinese currency on international trade.
D.To demonstrate the relationship between the Chinese currency and Western economic theory.
11.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Environment. B.Fashion. C.Business. D.Entertainment.
It’s no secret that inhaling (吸入) smoke is bad for your lungs. But now, scientists are suggesting smoke may also carry and spread infectious diseases. The theory, published in Science Magazine, is based on research that found wildfire smoke is crowded with thousands of species of microorganisms. Some of these microorganisms, including bacteria and fungal spores, are known to cause disease.
The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plant or animal matter and disturbs soils, it exposes thousands of species of bacteria and fungi that otherwise might not easily become airborne You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply post-fire. Scientists say the organisms attach to smoke particles, allowing them to travel thousands of miles across continents.
Dr. Peter Chen, director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, is interested in the theory but somewhat skeptical that the microorganisms in smoke would actually cause infections. Many bacteria and fungi don’t cause lung infections, says Chen, but it’s certainly possible that a significant amount could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition. “I always thought it was the particles in smoke that were causing these issues,” says Chen. “But when I read this, I started thinking: Could it be the microorganisms that are also worsening existing illnesses?”
Whether the microorganisms in smoke actually cause infection or simply worsen potential respiratory (呼吸的) issues, the article raises a new health threat that is “certainly alarming”, says Kelsey Jack, an associate professor of environmental and development economics. This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive.
But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor—including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.
12.What can we know about the microorganisms from paragraph 2?
A.They could be killed by high heat.
B.They could reproduce in large numbers after fires.
C.They could possibly travel through air by themselves.
D.They can easily attach themselves to smoke particles.
13.How do most microorganisms affect people according to Dr. Peter Chen?
A.They might worsen lung diseases. B.They will cause lung infections.
C.They will destroy living environments. D.They might damage respiratory systems.
14.Why are low-income people suffering more than others?
A.They live in poor areas.
B.They drive to and from work.
C.They have suffered from lung disease.
D.They are exposed to polluted air more frequently.
15.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Results of the new research.
B.Suggestions on dealing with poor air quality.
C.Disagreements between the author and Chen.
D.Benefits of preventing smoke from polluting the air.
Weeds, the fast-growing plants that cannot be eaten and do not bring flowers, are a common problem for gardeners. Some use chemicals to kill weeds. Others pull them up by hand or with heavy machinery. Luckily, there are other ways to limit their growth.
For starters, there are mulches which can bury weeds. Mulches are made from organic material, such as leaves, grass cuttings, and small pieces of wood. They are spread over the ground in a garden to control weeds. Organic mulches break down over time. 16 That is not a bad thing, because their decomposition creates nutrients for plants and humus to keep soils wet and full of fresh air.
Plastic mulch is another way to stop weeds. Common black plastic is easy to lay down. It also effectively blocks weeds and helps soil warm faster in the spring. 17 A reflective plastic mulch, for example, keeps some plant-eating insects away. A major problem with plastic is that it breaks apart over time, so eventually it needs to be thrown away. It also adds nothing to the soil as far as nutrients or humus. 18
Finally, in addition to direct attacks on weeds, how you plant your garden can indirectly influence weed growth. For example, close spacing of plants in the garden blocks sunlight from reaching the ground and can limit weed growth. And using a watering method known as drip irrigation will direct small amounts of water to the roots of your plants instead of the weeds. 19 Lying in soil are millions of weed seeds just waiting to be awakened by light and air.
Using any or all of these methods will not permanently stop weed growth. 20
A.So you must add more to your garden often.
B.And plastic also can block air from reaching the soil.
C.However, we could finally make it through our efforts.
D.So it adds little to the soil in terms of humus or nutrients.
E.Instead, your goal is simply to limit their growth in the garden.
F.Whether or not you dig up your soil also influences weed growth.
G.Recent experiments with other colored plastic have shown effects on both bugs and plant growth.

Lisa woke up on Saturday morning very excited. Today she was turning 10. She thought her mother would make her a special breakfast. Last year on her birthday, Lisa woke up to the smell of pancakes and sausage cooking. The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating cereal (麦片) at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday".
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa’s aunt wanted to speak with her, she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa’s surprise, her aunt simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special day, but she didn’t want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn’t it, Lisa?” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It’s a great day. You know why?”
“Because it’s Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and spending time together. But Lisa couldn’t help but think that it was strange that none of them had mentioned her birthday.
As she walked home in the late afternoon sun, Lisa tried her best not to cry. How could everyone forget her birthday? She was close to tears by the time she reached her home.
When she walked in, she was quite surprised.

根据第二段中的“You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply post-fire.(你可能会认为火的高温会杀死这些生物,但文章中提到的一项研究发现,一些细菌甚至会在火后繁殖)”可知,从第二段我们可以了解到有些微生物在火灾后还能繁殖。故选B。
根据第三段中的 “Many bacteria and fungi don’t cause lung infections, says Chen, but it’s certainly possible that a significant amount could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition.(陈说,许多细菌和真菌不会引起肺部感染,但对于已经存在肺部疾病的人来说,大量的细菌和真菌肯定会加重症状)”可知,陈彼得博士认为大多数微生物可能会加重肺部疾病。故选A。
根据第四段中的“This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive.(杰克说,对于低收入人群来说尤其如此,因为收入较少的人往往更容易受到环境的影响。如果烟雾影响了某个地区的空气质量,那么在外面工作的人,或者必须步行或骑自行车去办公室的人,会比开车的人吸入更多的烟雾)”可知,烟雾会传播疾病这件事对低收入的人群有更大的影响,是因为他们更多地直接接触被污染的空气。故选D。
15.推理判断题。根据最后一段“But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor—including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.(但在更多的研究完成之前,陈说,人们能做的最好的事情就是在空气质量差的时候遵循现有的建议,包括呆在室内,关闭门窗,使用高效微粒空气过滤器和开空调)”可知,最后一段主要陈述了应对被污染空气的建议。故选B。
16.A 17.G 18.B 19.F 20.E
16.根据前句“Organic mulches break down over time.(有机地膜随着时间的推移会分解。)”和后句“That is not a bad thing, because their decomposition creates nutrients for plants and humus to keep soils wet and full of fresh air.(这并不是一件坏事,因为它们的分解为植物和腐殖质创造了养分,以保持土壤湿润和充满新鲜空气。)” A“So you must add more to your garden often.(所以你必须经常给你的花园添加更多的植物。)” 故选A。
17.根据前两句“Common black plastic is easy to lay down. It also effectively blocks weeds and helps soil warm faster in the spring.(普通的黑色塑料很容易铺设。 它还能有效地阻止杂草,帮助土壤在春天更快地变暖。)”和后句“A reflective plastic mulch, for example, keeps some plant-eating insects away.(例如,一种反射性的塑料覆盖物可以防止一些以植物为食的昆虫。)” G“Recent experiments with other colored plastic have shown effects on both bugs and plant growth. (最近用其他颜色的塑料做的实验显示,它们对昆虫和植物生长都有影响。)”符合上下文语境。故选G。
18.根据前两句“A major problem with plastic is that it breaks apart over time, so eventually it needs to be thrown away. It also adds nothing to the soil as far as nutrients or humus. (塑料的一个主要问题是,随着时间的推移,它会分解,所以最终需要扔掉。它也不会增加土壤的养分或腐殖质。)”可知,这里开始讲塑料带来的问题。所以选择项B“And plastic also can block air from reaching the soil. (塑料还可以阻止空气到达土壤。)”符合上下文语境。故选B。
19.根据本段首句“Finally, in addition to direct attacks on weeds, how you plant your garden can indirectly influence weed growth.(最后,除了直接处理杂草,你种植花园的方式也会间接影响杂草的生长。)”和后句“Lying in soil are millions of weed seeds just waiting to be awakened by light and air.(土壤中埋藏着数百万颗杂草种子,等待着被阳光和空气唤醒。)” F“Whether or not you dig up your soil also influences weed growth. (你是否挖你的土壤也会影响杂草的生长。)”符合上下文语境。故选F。
20.根据前句“Using any or all of these methods will not permanently stop weed growth.(使用任何一种或所有这些方法都不会永久阻止杂草的生长。)” E“Instead, your goal is simply to limit their growth in the garden. (相反,你的目标只是限制它们在花园里的生长。)”符合上下文语境。故选E。

The dormitory also offers common areas like study rooms and lounges where students can relax and socialize. Additionally, there are laundry facilities and 24-hour security to ensure the safety and comfort of all residents.
Now, let’s have a look at our school cafeteria. It is a spacious and clean area where students have their meals. The cafeteria offers a variety of delicious and nutritious meals, including both Chinese and Western cuisines. We have different food stations serving options like rice, noodles, stir-fries, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. 47.Paragraph 1
There was a box with her name on it in the living room. Thinking that it might be her birthday present, she went up and opened the box with delight. In the box lay a photo album filled with photos recording the important moments together with her family and friends as she grew up. Lisa sank in the precious memories: the first family who had made it! At that time, Lisa came to wonder where they were and began to search every room.
Paragraph 2:
No one was home, but there was a letter on the table. Her heart beating wildly, she reached out for that letter which was written by her family and friends, saying how great a family member and a friend she was. With tears welling up in her eyes, she found in surprise that she was already surrounded by her loved ones. “Happy birthday!” they said cheerfully and sent their best wishes to Lisa. All of them had a wonderful evening together, adding another chapter to Lisa’s album.
