The Stories Behind 3 of the Photos from Our Pictures of the Year
Each year, National Geographic will publish a special issue to showcase some of the impressive images
taken around the globe to celebrate the high-quality photography. This year, 49 were selected as the best photos of
the year out of millions of images, and the photo editors give a glimpse behind the scenes of 3 images included in
2022 Pictures of the Year annual special issue.
Qaanaaq, Greenland//Kiliii Yüyan
Photographer Kiliii Yuyan is no stranger to documenting the daily lives of native peoples and the issues they
face around the world. He commits himself to capturing surprising and unique images for each story while his
colleague Mallory has quit in their tracks. In his story, two cousins push strollers (婴儿车) across a snowy plain in
Greenland on their way to annual dogsled races. The story itself challenges readers to think about how to treat their
ecosystem without destroying it and gives more insight into the daily lives of Inughuit women.
Canary Islands, Spain//Carsten Peter
It’s hard to capture the speed, texture, and sense of danger of lava flowing from a volcanic eruption, but
that’s what photographer Carsten Peter achieved with this image. He documented the 85-day eruption for National
Geographic, then returned to focus on the damage and on the scientific fieldwork that had been done once the
slow-moving lava had cooled.
Minneriya. Sri Lanka//Brent Stirton
Photographer Brent Stirton provided a window into these animals’ lives, which she hopes will increase
awareness and stir up sympathy through the photo.
The image was tough to capture not only because Stirton needed to get close to the wild animals for the frame but
also because it was a challenging time to work in Sri Lanka. The government was collapsing in economic decline.
“I think there’s an opportunity to show people a side of animals they may have not seen before,” she says.

Amanda Kofoeds had found a strange lump in her arm one day and visited a doctor at a friend’s urging.
During this time, she was enrolled in school for education and was currently uninsured due to the expense. She
planned to save money so she could get on her husband’s insurance and then seek medical treatment for the cancer.
Her friends and family didn’t want her to put off her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into their
own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign. The friend came up with the creative idea to spread the word and
invite family, friends, and strangers who wanted to help to participate in a donation flash mob (快闪行动 ). The
event started an outpouring of enormous generosity from the local community.
Amanda and her husband Clint teared up as the crowd passed by and the donations poured in. The generous
act of kindness gave the family a comforting, and optimistic feeling during a time when all hope seemed lost. Clint
said that Amanda struggled with the idea of asking for help. She felt guilty and undeserving compared to others
who are also struggling.
In the time since, Amanda has enrolled in an insurance plan and has finished chemotherapy. Life for the family
has started getting back to their normal routine.
Once Amanda got her strength back, she returned to school and completed her bachelor’s degree in education.
She is now a teacher. She said the experience motivated her to instil the value of charity in her children. The family
is now inspired to volunteer in their local neighborhood and contribute to crowdfunding (众筹) efforts. They are
grateful for the opportunity to give back and help others as many have helped them.
The couple said they feel blessed by the strong support. PassItOn wants to celebrate those heroes during the
family’s darkest time. These individuals perfectly demonstrate the value of community. It is with the help of their
generosity that the family is now happy, healthy and whole.
24. Why did Amanda Kofoeds postpone her treatment?
A. She was admitted to a school.
B. She couldn’t afford the medical cost.
C. No good doctors could treat her cancer.
25. What did her friends do to help Amanda Kofoeds?
A. They started a donation flash mob.
D. Her friends and family refused to assist her.
B. They founded a community school.
C. They supported her through local hospitals.
D. They fought for assistance from the whole country.
26. Which word best describes the couple’s feeling when strongly supported?
A. Guilty. B. Satisfied. C. Anxious.

A gel full of porous (可渗透的 ) holes, inspired by the dried core of the loofah fruit, can clean contaminated
water by absorbing and releasing it, powered only by the heat of the sun. It could be used to provide clean water in
regions without a reliable electricity supply.
Xiaohui Xu at Princeton University and her colleagues call their material a loofah-inspired solar absorber gel.
It is hydrophilic when cool, meaning it readily absorbs water, but becomes hydrophobic when warmed by the heat
of the sun and begins to release water. Because the gel only absorbs water and not contaminants such as oils, metals
and microplastics, the released water is purified.
The researchers created the new hydrogel by adding ethylene glycol – a substance often used in the
manufacture of polyester fibers – during the manufacturing process, creating porous holes similar to those found in
a loofah. One gram of the gel can hold 50 milliliters of water, and it becomes hydrophobic at a temperature of 31°C
(89°F), expelling 70 per cent of its absorbed water in 5 minutes.
Xu says that the material could be used alone to clean water in low-income countries, by absorbing water from
polluted sources and then being placed in the sun to warm up and begin the process of releasing clean water – as
long as the sunshine is strong enough to get it to the necessary temperature.
“We are developing a device to hold the materials. The manufacturing process is not difficult, all the reaction
occurs at room temperature, no complicated equipment is required. It could be made in large scale,” she says. “We
are working on designing a device for continuous water purification and we plan to try the new device next month.
It won’t take long to put to use.”
28. What does the underlined word “hydrophobic” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Lacking attraction to water.
C. Deriving energy from water.
B. Being able to absorb water.
D. Being composed by reacting with water.
29. What can be inferred about the gel?
A. The gel can easily absorb something that contaminates the water.
B. The gel is manufactured by adding polyester fibers.
C. The porous holes in the gel is on account of ethylene glycol.
D. The gel releases 70 per cent of its water at a temperature of 89°C.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the gel?
A. Its design inspiration.
B. Its historical development.
D. Its working principle.
C. Its manufacturing process.
31. What is Xu’s attitude towards the gel?
A. Ambiguous.
B. Indifferent.
C. Supportive.
D. Negative.

In a country where over 80% of residents live in public housing, a government commitment to sustainable
urban design could have huge influence. And when it’s a tropical country like Singapore where convenience and air
conditioning are a way of life, the impact could be greater still.
Promising 42,000 new homes across five residential districts, the eco-town of Tengah will be the 24th new
settlement built by Singapore’s government since World War II. It is, however, the first with centralized cooling,
automated trash collection and a car-free town center, with which environment lovers hope to offer a roadmap for

reducing carbon emissions in the Southeast Asian city-state.
The development is named as “Forest Town” by officials, due to its abundant greenery and public gardens.
Once home to brickmaking factories, and later used for military training, the 2.7-square-mile site has been
reclaimed by a forest in recent years. A 328-foot-wide ecological “corridor” will be maintained through its center,
providing safe passage to wildlife and connecting a water catchment area on one side to a nature reserve on the
other.
The project has proven a new plan for urban planners supporting green design principles and “smart”
technology, according to Chong Fook Loong, group director for research and planning at Singapore’s Housing and
Development Board, the agency overseeing the country's public housing. “Tengah is a new start,” he said in a video
interview, explaining that roads and parking are being pushed beneath the town center. “We’re going for the ideal
concept of separated traffic, with everything underground and then the ground level totally freed up for
pedestrians—for people. So, it’s a very safe environment for all.”
“We want a town that allows walking and cycling in a very user-friendly manner,” he added, saying that
cycling has “taken off” in Singapore in the “last three to five years especially”. The master plan will see the
installation of electric vehicle charging stations.
32. What is special about the 24th new settlement?
A. It can house 42,000 people.
B. It will be well equipped.
C. It will be built by the government.
D. It will be environmentally friendly.
33. Which of the following might be the design of the forest town?
34. What can we learn from Chong Fook Loong’s words?
A. A parking lot will put in the town center.
C. Bikes will be able to fly in the near future.
35. What is the best title for the text?
B. Passers-by and traffic will be in different levels.
D. All masters will install charging stations.
A. Ways to reduce carbon emissions
B. A green roadmap for Singapore
C. An eco “smart” city planning
D. A smart electric vehicle technology

Morty was checking out his library books when it caught his eye-a poster for Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
“Check this out!” Morty called to Ben and Fred as he grabbed three brochures and dashed to catch up with his best
buddies. They all stopped, books in hands, to stare at the pictures of kids flying above canyons suspended from zip
lines. They instantly believed the brochure’s headline: Summer won’t be complete until you Take it to the Limit at
Adventure Rocks Kids Camp.
Ben broke the silence, “We have less than two weeks until registration opens, and it says the camp fills up
fast.” Then an idea popped into Morty’s head. “Why don’t we sell lemonade and snacks by the side of the road? We
can pool our allowance savings for the camp.” “That’s a great Idea,” Ben said.
The sun had barely come up on Saturday morning when the kids set up their business. They chose a spot,
asked permission from the homeowner, and then asked to use her garden hose for water to make lemonade.
Their business went smoothly until Ben announced that they had a comparatively small stock of lemons
shortly after noon. Morty decided to make their stock go further. “Fred, when the jug gets down to one-fourth full,
just fill it to the top with the water hose.” Morty was thinking out loud, “I’ll change the sign and charge 30 more
cents for each cup of lemonade.” Their business went on and the three were secretly proud of the little tricks they
had done.
Just as Morty finished refilling the jug with water for the third time, a vehicle rounded the comer. Morty saw
the minivan with his father at the wheel and his family inside. They pulled up to the sidewalk, and his brothers and
sisters jumped out, each clutching a coin or two. They were eager to support their brother’s bustling business.
Morty’s family bought the last of the brownies and drank the last drop of watered-down lemonade.

Paragraph 1 :Morty’s father frowned at the sip of the lemonade. As to him, ittasted more like water. Overwhelmed
with confusion, he asked directly, “What’s wrong? It tastes just like cold water.” The moment Morty heardhis father’s doubt,
he stood awkwardly, not sure whatto say. Fred and Ben were also speechless. A moment later, they admitted what they had
done. Although Morty’s father was disappointed, he said, “You still have time to correct your wrongdoings.” Hearing this,
they nodded immediately.
Paragraph2 :They decided to fix their wrongdoings the next week. Ben suggested using the moneyearned to
prepare enough lemons first and then reduce the price. They all agreed. When they restarted their business, they even stood
a sign, saying, “We send a cup of lemonade to customers who bought it last Saturday afternoon for free.” They made over
50 cups of lemonade for a constant stream of customers with a low price and over 20 cups were for free.As you could
imagine, they didn’t get enough money for the camp. But they learned a valuable lesson that one should always be honest.
