Whether it be a personan animal or even an insect a mother's instincts (本能) are never wrong. This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat's quick thinking may have just saved her babies.

In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital holding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they were unaware that she had given birth to kittens.

The mother cat was concerned for her young because they weren't able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls," We consulted with vets (兽医)and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited."Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes.

When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger.Without the mother cat's help, the kittens may not make it to adulthood.

As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother's love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.

    24. Why did the mother cat show up in the hospital?

         A. To seek out food.                     B. To express thanks.

         C. To get her babies treated.           D. To give birth to her babies.

    25. How did the doctors help the baby cat?

        A. They built them a home.               B. They adopted all of them.

        C. They gave them right medicine.         D. They operated on them immediately.

    26. What makes newly-born cats dependent on their mothers?

         A. Their physical state.                    B. Their eating habit.

         C. Their appearance.                      D. Their behavior.

    27. What can we learn from the story?

        A. A cat has nine lives.                   B. Love makes a difference.

        C. One good turn deserves another.         D. God helps those who help themselves.

    C

Wildlife crossings dont just protect animals. They can also mitigate problems related to wildlife-vehicle collisions (碰撞) and save significant money for a community.

Wildlife crossings are man-made structures that help animals move safely around their habitat. They are often paths under or over another existing road or railway, or underground passages for animals to get past for food or avoiding attacks.

Some animals are unable to migrate to survive. People still rely on highways for business and travel, and animals continue to have mobility needs for survival, though. When new roads are built, animals living in a part of their habitat can greatly increase the number of wildlife vehicle collisions while trying to cross the new barriers.

In a new study, Wisnu Sugiarto, a Washington State University economics doctoral student, examined data for 13 of the 22 wildlife crossings, including bridges and underpasses, in the Washington State. He compared the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions each year before and after the construction of a wildlife crossing. He considered the area within 10 miles of a crossing.

Then he compared his analysis to a separate area in the state with no crossings at all. The findings reported that wildlife crossing structures reduced the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions by one to three accidents on average per mile per year,Sugiarto said. Therefore, building wildlife crossing structures is typically an essential and effective strategy to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions.

Trior to working on this research, I wasnt aware of any strategies to reduce wildlife vehicle collisions. I also thought we couldnt do much about it, partly because we wouldnt be able to communicate with wildlife and control their movement,Sugiarto added. However, it turns out that there are multiple strategies to deal with issues related to wildlife-vehicle collisions and we can do something about them.

It is reported that the government has invested $ 350 million over five years for the construction of wildlife crossings. Every wildlife crossing offers a mean benefit of between $235,000 and $443,000 each year.

28What does the underlined word mitigatein paragraph 1 mean?

    AAnalyze.       BReduce.          CStudy.          DDiscover.

29What does the third paragraph mainly tell us?

AHow the wildlife crossings are built.        BWhy wildlife crossings are necessary.

CWhat should be done to cross the roads.      DWhen wildlife-vehicle collisions happen.

30What is Sugiartos attitude to the construction of wildlife crossings?

    ATolerant.     BSkeptical.       CFavorable.       DConservative.

31What is the best title for the text?

AWildlife crossings save wild animals and money

BThe size of wildlife crossings affects animals greatly

CEvery wildlife crossing has a great effect on road safety

DWildlife crossings manage to help animals move safely

Going against the tide of flocking to well-known tourist destinations on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China tend to spend their leisure time at lesser-known tourist attractions. Reverse tourism (逆向旅游)has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.

According to data from an online travel agency, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year-on-year. Bookings for four-star or five-star hotels in less-traveled places all increased at least 10 times. Some lesser-known scenic spots posted double-digit growth during the holiday. Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province, received 52,100 visits in the seven days, up 15.78 percent year-over-year.

Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular destinations. In addition, lesser-known attractions are not as commercialas developed ones and are able to offer more actual experiences and natural encounters. Essentially speaking, total relaxation is becoming a real expectation for many people when they travel. Changes in demand may be the fundamental reason for the popularity of reverse tourism. COVID-19 is another key factor fueling reverse tourism. As precautionary measures continue, traveling has an unpredictable quality. Travelers have thus become more cautious and tend to choose local attractions or places with fewer tourists.

The rise of reverse tourism is not a bad thing, said Zhengzhou Daily. It means that vacationers now have more options, which brings more possibilities to the tourism market. More importantly, it noted, the trend is set to force popular destinations to improve themselves instead of resting on their past honor.

Jiang Han, a senior researcher, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market. To give a real boost to the tourism market, Jiang suggested that more efforts be made to tap the potential of underrated (被低估了的), lesser-known destinations. It is necessary to dig deeper into the local customs and highlight the local characteristics to improve the quality of local tourism.

    32. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The popularity of travel agency in China.

    B. The contributions of tourism to the economy.

    C. The high income of hotels during holidays.

    D. The increasing trend of reverse tourism in China.

    33. What may be the root cause of the rise of reverse tourism?

    A. The effect of COVID-19.              B. Holidaymakerschanging needs for travel.

    C. No improvements in famous spots.      D. The cheaper prices of the less-traveled places.

    34. What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism?

    A. It will drop with the recovery of economy

    B. It benefits both tourists and the tourism market.

    C. It is helpful to spread local culture to tourists.

    D. It stops the development of the famous resorts.

    35. What is Jiang Hans advice on developing the tourism market?

    A. Finding the potential and features of less-traveled attractions.

    B. Improving the management of the local tourism.

    C. Upgrading the facilities in tourist areas.

    D. Highlighting the local tourism through media.

Some people make it effortless to have a warm conversation with a complete stranger. For the rest of us, however, starting a conversation may require more effort. Here are a few tips of conversational skills.

Mind your body language. Try to keep your body relaxed and open rather than closed off and rigid. Don’t clench(握紧) your fists. Adopt a slightly more casual, relaxed posture. When seated, don’t cross arms and legs.    36     .

37   Figure out the common ground you share. Maybe you’re both sitting in the same corner. Maybe the companions of invitees have temporarily abandoned you. Or perhaps both of you are direct friends of a host, having never met previously.

Turn to humour.    38   . In this way, they protect themselves from a number of unpleasant circumstances. Consequently, they’re difficult to engage in conversation with those types of conversational skills. Your greatest weapon is humour. Laughter can warm up the most socially cold person.

39    . Keep current on world and local affairs. Or if all of the world news seems depressing beyond belief, you might want to come prepared with light-hearted news stories that you can easily find online. This is not to say that serious topics and current affairs are off limits in social conversation.     40     .

And let’s not forget the primary guideline that makes all of these smaller guidelines possible—relax! If you stay relaxed, then starting a conversation will come far more naturally to you in any situation. Have fun!
