“Yu shuld get a cat, ” my therapist (治疗专家) said. “A cat? ” I culdn’t even lk after myself. I tk a deep breath and carefully cnsidered the idea f welcming a feline (猫科的)friend int my life. This seemed like t easy a fix fr the fact that I culdn’t leave the huse withut bursting int tears.
When my partner and I fund Cinnamn, her adptin prfile made her ut as the perfect kitten. We filled ut the paperwrk and prepared fr her arrival.

After visiting ur vet, she cncluded that Cinnamn just wanted ur attentin. She fught tth and nail t get a bite f ur meals. She’d fearlessly lick sharp knives when left unattended fr a split secnd. Cinnamn stle my heart with her bravery and kept me busier than I’d ever expected.
We decided t start taking her fr walks. I culd barely leave the huse befre, but my heart culdn’t say n t Cinnamn. Cinnamn shwed me what bravery lked like. She didn’t stp t cnsider every pssible utcme f a situatin; she simply went fr it. If there was a dg at a park, she wuld run tward it. She jumped withut knwing where she wuld land. She lved adventure. I fund myself mirrring her behavir after a while, jumping ut f bed withut a secnd thught. I began t find the mtivatin t get ut f bed in the mrning.
Cinnamn unfrtunately passed away after a medical accident. I’m n stranger t sadness r grief, but lsing my pet s suddenly was the mst cnfusing emtinal experience I’ve had t date. She n lnger wakes me up at 5 am begging fr breakfast, but she’s still the reasn I get up every mrning.

On January 7th, 2022, David Bennett became the first persn t have a heart transplanted successfully int him frm a pig. On that ccasin, mere peratin success was the gal. This peratin is a milestne fr xentransplantatin (异种移植) — the transfer f rgans frm ther species t human patients.
Fr decades, researchers have attempted t deal with xentransplantatin’s basic prblem. This is that the human bdy, when it recgnizes freign tissue, tends t turn against it. In the case f pigs, the mst imprtant marker f freignness is a sugar mlecule (分子) called alpha-Gal. While this mlecule des nt exist in humans, antibdies t kill it d. S n transplant frm a pig with alpha-Gal wuld last mre than a cuple f minutes in a human bdy. In 2003 pigs were prduced with a changed genme s as t prevent the enzyme (酶) respnsible fr making alpha-Gal. This was a step in the right directin, but ther barriers ppped up.
The pig fr David’s peratin had a genme changed in ten ways t increase the chances f success. Three genes had been remved t reduce the risk f a human antibdy rejecting the rgan. A furth, a grwth gene, had als been kncked ut, t ensure the heart did nt enlarge after transplantatin. And six human genes had been added t prmte acceptance.
There are ther cncerns. One is any unknwn rejectin mechanism. Anther is the pssibility that the rgan may pass viruses t its new hst. The pig in questin was raised where there was n virus t reduce the chance f that, but it remains a pssibility.
In thery, pigs can be raised t prvide humans with any slid rgan, but sme will be mre cmplex than thers. Mrever, even if these barriers can be vercme, mst researchers still acknwledge that increasing xentransplantatin t meet the wrld’s demand fr rgans may take decades. After this news, hwever, the chances that it will happen eventually have increased.
    28. What is the basic prblem f xentransplantatin?
    The human bdy lacks alpha-Gal.
The life f the transplanted rgan is t shrt.
The human bdy resists freign tissues.
The enzyme is prevented frm making alpha-Gal.
    29. Why was a grwth gene remved in David’s case?
Because it wuld lead t heart enlargement.
Because it wuld change David’s genme.
Because it wuld make the heart mre acceptable.
Because it wuld be recgnized by David’s antibdies.
    30. What can we learn abut the pig?
It saved the patient’s life perfectly.B. It had a decreased number f genes.
    C. It was raised in a virus-free envirnment.D. It had an unknwn rejectin mechanism.
    31. What is the authr’s attitude twards the future f xentransplantatin?
    A. Indifferent.B. Uncertain.C. Disturbed.D. Optimistic.
    D
New research suggests that ne night f sleep with just a small amunt f light may have negative effects n health.
The small, 20-persn study cnducted by Dr. Phyllis Zee, directr f the Center fr Circadian (生理节奏的) and Sleep Medicine, was designed t measure the physilgical effects f 100 lux (照度) f artificial light n healthy adults while they were sleeping. Fr the study, all the participants spent their first night sleeping in a mstly dark rm. The next night, half f them slept in a better lit rm. Meanwhile, the researchers ran tests n the sleepers: brainwaves, heart rates and bld. In the mrning, they’d give bth grups a large amunt f sugar t see hw well their systems respnded t it.
The grup expsed t the light had raised heart rates thrughut the night, and als had truble getting their bld sugar int a nrmal range.
These changes suggest the small amunt f light was enugh t shift the nervus system t a mre excited and alert state. “It’s almst like the brain and the heart knew that the lights were n, althugh the individual was sleeping,” says Zee.
While the findings f this study alne can’t predict what wuld happen in the lng term, Dr. Clwell suspects the harmful effects wuld be cumulative: “This was nly ne night, s imagine if yu’re living that way cnstantly?”
“That’s ging t increase the risk f lng-term diseases,” says Dr. Charles Czeisler whse research has lked at the cnsequences f circadian rhythm sleep disrder fr lnger than just ne night. He cncluded that the unpleasant effects were primarily because f the “internal clck” being disturbed — nt necessarily because f the lack f sleep.
This is nt t say that the lack f sleep desn’t als have negative effects n health — it des — but he says it simply stresses the lasting cnsequences f being expsed t light at nighttime.
“Peple think that as lng as they fall asleep and are uncnscius, it’s nt having physilgical effects, but that’s simply nt true,” Czeisler says.
    32. What is Paragraph 2 mainly abut?
    A. Wh is in charge f the research. B. What type f light affects sleep.
    C. Why light and sleep are cnnected. D. Hw the study is carried ut.
    33. What d we knw abut the new research?
    A. Sleeping with a little bit f light isn’t gd fr yur health.
    B. Light plays a critical rle in regulating circadian rhythm.
    C. Leaving the bedrm lights n leads t mental disrder.
    D. A small amunt f light at night is linked with sleep depth.
    34. What des the underlined wrd “cumulative” in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Cmmn. B. Increasing. C. Slight. D. Accidental.
    35. Which f the fllwing might Czeisler agree with?
    A. The mre yu sleep, the healthier yu will be.
    B. Physilgical effects disappear with a sund sleep.
    C. It is the circadian rhythm sleep disrder that matters.
    D. Sleep quality lies in hw yu feel abut the sleep.

Hw t Wrk ut Yur Wrries by Writing
    Smething trubling yu?
    Yu shuld write abut it.
Research shws that peple wh write abut a difficult situatin ften shw imprved mental and physical health.
36 It is a specific technique, and it’s different frm writing in a jurnal. The idea is t reflect hnestly and thughtfully n a particular challenge.
Hundreds f studies ver several decades have lked at the ptential benefits f expressive writing. It can strengthen the immune system, including fr peple with illnesses such as flu, cancer and depressin. 37
Expressive writing wrks because it allws yu t make meaning ut f a painful experience, experts say. 38 Then translating that experience int language frces yu t rganize yur thughts. And creating a narrative gives yu a sense f cntrl.
But expressive writing isn’t a magical cure-all slutin. 39 And peple cping with a severe injury r depressin may nt find it useful t d n their wn, withut therapy (治疗). Yet it can be a pwerful tl fr many, in large part because it helps prevent the secrecy peple ften feel abut an injury, as well as their reluctance t face emtins.
40 Thinking r talking abut an event can lead t reflecting, where yu becme lst in yur emtins. Writing frces yu t slw dwn. The mere act f labeling a feeling — f putting wrds t an emtin — can lessen the nervus activity in the threat area f the brain. Writing can increase smene’s acceptance f his experience, and acceptance is calming.
    Why write?
    What if yu dn’t write?
Expressive writing gave peple the curage t face fears.
It shuldn't be used as a replacement fr ther treatments.
It can als help reduce pain and imprve md, sleep and memry.
The first imprtant step is t recgnize what it is that is bthering yu.
Psychlgists refer t writing abut an unpleasant experience as “expressive writing”.

M:Nw,I'd like t talk abut what yu shuld d in lectures. This is a vital skill, s listen up! ⑱Mst imprtant f all is that yu shuldn't try t make a nte f everything yu hear. A lecture is nt a dictatin.⑱Yu have t listen and decide what is imprtant and what isn't.Secnd, when yu make ntes,dn't write everything in full. Use symbls, numbers,r a shrt frm f a wrd... anything t help keep pace. Als, try t rganize yur ntes effectively.Furthermre,yu shuld try t keep pace bean active listener.By that, I mean yu need t try and predict what the speaker is ging t say.S befre the lecture, ask yurself what yu already knw abut the tpic, and during the lecture think abut where the talk might be heading.Anther useful tip is if yu miss smething then dn't panic. Lecturers usually repeat themselves.Smething else yu shuld be sure t d is listen fr the main ideas, as well as the details, therwiseyu wn't be able t seethe wd frthe trees. And finally, after the lecture, yu shuld review yur ntes as sn as pssible. That means basically writing them ut again, but this time rerganize them, mark the main pints, and even add yur wn thughtsand cmments in the empty space. Reviewing yur ntes in this way will help everything sink in,andmake a useful study aid.
