The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece — have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism — while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas (帆布), a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital near Saint–Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modem Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It depicts the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title 'Guernica' refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
1. Which of the following paintings was produced earliest?
A. Guernica. B. The Harvesters.
C. The Starry Night. D. The Amolfini Portrait.
2. Who created the painting describing the harvest seasons?
A. Pieter Bruegel the Elder. B. Vincent van Gogh.
C. Jan van Eyck. D. Pablo Picasso.
3. What do we know about the paintingThe Starry Night?
A. It was painted on wood in oils.
B. It described the painter's life in hospital.
C. It wasn't widely recognized before 1941.
D. It was given away to the museum by a collector.

A struggling Waffle House employee who was trying to serve nearly 30 people by himself after midnight got a full serving of kindness when some customers jumped behind the counter to help him.
Ethan Crispo, 24, witnessed the inspiring scene in the early hours of Nov. 3 at a Waffle House in Birmingham, Alabama.
Crispo told TODAY’s Kerry Sanders that he had come to the 24-hour restaurant from a friend’s birthday party and saw the struggling employee, identified only as Ben, trying to cook the food, serve it, bus tables and wash dishes while more than 25 people were waiting to eat.
“The look on his face was just confusion,” Crispo told Sanders.
An unidentified male customer then decided to help him out, grabbing an apron and going behind the counter to wash dishes.
Another customer, Alison Stanley, went behind the counter to make some coffee—still dressed from a night out on the town.
“I don’t think it’s anything special,” Stanley told Sanders. “He needed help, so I got up and helped out.”
Crispo took some photos of the scene as multiple customers worked to bus tables and wash dishes while Ben focused on taking orders and preparing the food.
Waffle House told TODAY that Ben was left to support himself due to a scheduling issue.
“We had two associates scheduled to leave, however, due to a communication mix-up, their relief did not show up on time,” Waffle House director of PR Pat Warner said in a statement. “That left Ben, our cook, alone in the restaurant with hungry customers. He worked the grill (烤架) and got the orders out.”
The company was also thankful for the customers who joined in and helped Ben out.
“We are grateful that many of our customers feel like they are part of our Waffle House family,” Warner said. “There is a sense of community in each and every one of our restaurants, and we appreciate the fact that they consider our associates like family.”
“We are also very thankful for Ben, who kept the restaurant open. He is a representative of our Waffle House culture by always putting the customers first.”
Crispo had his usual order, double plain waffle, as he took in the scene of strangers helping out Ben on his shift.
“Humanity truly isn’t good, it’s great!” he said.
4. Ben was left to work alone during his midnight shift because ________.
A. his associates asked for a leave B. there was a scheduling mistake
C. few customers needed to be served D. the restaurant was scheduled to close
5. Some customers helped Ben out by ________.
A. washing dishes B. taking photos
C. taking orders D. cooking food
6. Why did the customers lend a helping hand according to Pat Warner?
A. They shared the same community spirit. B. They were family members of Ben.
C. They wanted to serve themselves. D. They were too hungry to wait.
7. How did Crispo feel as a witness of the scene?
A. Lucky and excited. B. Moved and inspired.
C. Relieved and hopeful. D. Content and unbelievable.
B 5. A 6. A 7. B

由第十段“We had two associates scheduled to leave, however, due to a communication mix-up, their relief did not show up on time,” Waffle House director of PR Pat Warner said in a statement. “That left Ben, our cook, alone in the restaurant with hungry customers. He worked the grill (烤架) and got the orders out.”
由第五段“An unidentified male customer then decided to help him out, grabbing an apron and going behind the counter to wash dishes.”和第八段“Crispo took some photos of the scene as multiple customers worked to bus tables and wash dishes while Ben focused on taking orders and preparing the food.” 故选A项。
由第十二段“We are grateful that many of our customers feel like they are part of our Waffle House family,” Warner said. “There is a sense of community in each and every one of our restaurants, and we appreciate the fact that they consider our associates like family.” 故选A项。
由第二段“Ethan Crispo, 24, witnessed the inspiring scene in the early hours of Nov. 3 at a Waffle House in Birmingham, Alabama.”11月3日凌晨,24岁的克里斯波在阿拉巴马州伯明翰的一家华夫饼屋目睹了这令人振奋的一幕。最后一段“Humanity truly isn’t good, it’s great!”

Some yogurt containers in your grocery store might be looking a little different soon. Pure Dairy yogurt will be sold in cups made mostly of paper. Pure Dairy is a food company which specializes in making yogurt which is often sold in plastic containers. But plastic, unlike paper, can take hundreds of years to break down, leading to long-lasting waste. Now, Pure Dairy’s first-ever paper cups will replace the plastic cups previously used to hold its yogurt products.
“People have been asking for a paper cup, and we welcome this challenge to start reducing our plastic use, and to spark a conversation about how we can drive change together. I think we all have a role to play in protecting our planet.” said Hamdi Ulukaya, Pure Dairy’s founder and chief executive officer.
Pure Dairy currently produces yogurt, creamers, coffee and plant-based drinks. Many of these products already come in paper-based, recyclable packaging. But its yogurt products had always been sold in plastic. That’s why the company has spent the past two years working to create a paper cup. They wanted it to hold yogurt just as well as the plastic cups do. The paper cup is expected to hit grocery shelves at the end of this year, which is 80 percent paperboard made from renewable materials.
The new paper cup still has a thin plastic lining to maintain the quality of the product and prevent the yogurt from seeping into the packaging. Although packaging with mixed materials is often not recyclable, Pure Dairy will continue working with partners to make it happen. This group works with businesses to make their products and packaging more sustainable, meaning they want to use resources so that they will continue to be available in the future. The yogurt company says it hopes to put more sustainable packaging on shelves all over the country which will use less plastic and more paper.
8. Why will the company sell yogurt in paper containers?
A. To reduce waste. B. To create a new packaging.
C. To recycle the plastic containers. D. To specialize in making paper cups.
9. What does the underlined word “spark” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Share. B. Continue. C. Dominate. D. Activate.
10. What can we say about the latest paper cup?
A. It can be recyclable. B. It is made of plastic and paper.
C. It doesn’t satisfy the public’s demands. D. It is not the joint effort of the companies.
11. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Paper cups may replace the plastic cups. B. A lot of paper products will be available.
C. A renewable material will replace yogurt. D. The company hopes to produce more packaging.
A 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第一段“But plastic, unlike paper, can take hundreds of years to break down, leading to long-lasting waste. Now, Pure Dairy’s first-ever paper cups will replace the plastic cups previously used to hold its yogurt products.(但与纸张不同,塑料需要数百年才能分解,导致长期浪费。现在,Pure Dairy公司有史以来第一款纸杯将取代之前用来盛放酸奶产品的塑料杯)”可知,该公司使用纸杯销售酸奶是为了减少浪费。故选A项。
根据第二段“People have been asking for a paper cup, and we welcome this challenge to start reducing our plastic use, and to spark a conversation about how we can drive change together. I think we all have a role to play in protecting our planet.(人们一直在要求一个纸杯,我们欢迎这一挑战,开始减少我们的塑料使用,并spark一场关于我们如何共同推动变革的对话。我认为我们都可以在保护我们的星球方面发挥作用)”可知,Pure Dairy公司表示他们欢迎使用纸杯这一挑战,开始减少塑料使用并引发了如何推动变革的对话,以此在保护星球方面发挥作用。由此推知,划线单词表示“引发”,与activate同义。故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The new paper cup still has a thin plastic lining to maintain the quality of the product and prevent the yogurt from seeping into the packaging.(新的纸杯仍然有一个薄的塑料衬里,以保持产品的质量,并防止酸奶渗入包装)”可知,新的纸杯是由塑料和纸制成的。
根据第四段“Although packaging with mixed materials is often not recyclable, Pure Dairy will continue working with partners to make it happen. This group works with businesses to make their products and packaging more sustainable, meaning they want to use resources so that they will continue to be available in the future.(虽然混合材料的包装通常不是可回收的,但Pure Dairy将继续与合作伙伴合作实现这一目标。该公司与企业合作,使其产品和包装更具可持续性,这意味着他们希望利用资源,以便在未来继续可用)”可推知,在未来,纸杯可能会代替塑料杯。故选A项。
D
Human activity has shrunk (缩小) the size of wild animals worldwide, and yet recent research has found many mammals (哺乳动物) living near cities have gradually become larger, both in length and in weight. The findings are unexpected. Spreading urban environments can grow much hotter than natural habitats, and warmer temperatures usually benefit mammals that have a smaller, more energy-saving figure—a principle of biology known as Bergmann’s rule.
As the world grows warmer, scientists have worried that mammals living near cities are going to grow smaller, possibly reducing their fitness and the fitness of their predators (捕食者). Even with climate change that might not happen. As it turns out, there is another factor affecting a mammal’s size that might exceed temperature, and that is food. In and around places with dense populations, where high-calorie human foods are more widely available and predators are fewer and farther in between, new research discovered that most of the mammal species studied appear to be growing in size, not shrinking. According to careful measurements of more than 100 species from North America, gathered from museum collections over the past 80 years, the main reason is not a city’s temperature. Instead, the greatest increases in weight and body length appear to lie among those mammals that live near humans, regardless of how hot their surroundings are.
As climate change grows worse, there is, of course, the possibility that that might change, but at least for now, it seems wolves, deer, bats, and other mammals in North America could be affected more by city populations than city climates.
If we want to protect mammals that exist today for the future, it’s important we know how human civilization is influencing their size, behavior, and well-being. In a rapidly changing world, that knowledge could mean the difference between ongoing life and dying out.
12. Why are the findings unexpected according to Paragraph 1?
A. The temperature in cities is hotter than that in nature.
B. Mammals around cities grow against Bergmann’s rule.
C. The animals living in nature become bigger in size.
D. The city temperature makes animals become smaller.
13. What does the underlined word “dense” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Large. B. Young. C. Working. D. Educated.
14. Which of the following best supports the main idea of the text?
A. Human activity has shrunk the size of wild animals.
B. Climate matters most in determining the size of mammals.
C. Mammals become larger with more food near cities.
D. Living in hot surroundings shapes the size of mammals.
15. What will the passage most probably talk about next?
A. Human’s impact on the mammals’ development.
B. Different ways to rescue the endangered city animals.
C. How to help mammals adjust to the climate change.
D. What healthy food can be given to city mammals.
B 13. A 14. C 15. A
根据第一段的“Human activity has shrunk (缩小) the size of wild animals worldwide, and yet recent research has found many mammals (哺乳动物) living near cities have gradually become larger, both in length and in weight.(人类活动缩小了世界范围内野生动物的体型,然而最近的研究发现,许多生活在城市附近的哺乳动物在长度和重量上都逐渐变大。)”和“Spreading urban environments can grow much hotter than natural habitats, and warmer temperatures usually benefit mammals that have a smaller, more energy-saving figure—a principle of biology known as Bergmann’s rule.(不断扩张的城市环境比自然栖息地要热得多,而温暖的气温通常有利于体型更小、更节能的哺乳动物——生物学原理被称为伯格曼法则。)”
根据第二段的“where high-calorie human foods are more widely available and predators are fewer(在那里,高热量的人类食物更容易获得,而捕食者更少)”可知,高热量的人类食物更容易获得,这说明这里人口多,因此“places with dense populations”是人口较多的地方,因此dense populations的意思是“人口很多”,即large populations, dense和large意思相近,故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第一段的“recent research has found many mammals (哺乳动物) living near cities have gradually become larger, both in length and in weight(最近的研究发现,许多生活在城市附近的哺乳动物在长度和重量上都逐渐变大)”和第二段的“In and around places with dense populations, where high-calorie human foods are more widely available and predators are fewer and farther in between, new research discovered that most of the mammal species studied appear to be growing in size, not shrinking.(新的研究发现,在人口密集的地区及其周边地区,高热量的人类食物更容易获得,而捕食者更少,距离更远。研究发现,大多数被研究的哺乳动物物种的体型似乎在增长,而不是在缩小。)”可知本文主要讲的是研究发现,随着城市附近食物的增加,哺乳动物的体型变得更大。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“If we want to protect mammals that exist today for the future, it’s important we know how human civilization is influencing their size, behavior, and well-being.(如果我们想要保护现存的哺乳动物,了解人类文明是如何影响它们的体型、行为和福祉的,这很重要。)” 故选A。
Science shows that stretching (拉伸) is essential after exercise. Stretching lengthens and mobilizes the connective tissue around your muscle. What’s more, stretching helps your blood flow and even relieves your stress. ____16____
You could feel sick. You won’t be surprised to know that when you exercise, you raise your heart rate for a period of time. While it’s great to get that blood flowing, it’s just as important to get your heart rate back to a normal level after the workout is over. ____17____ As your heart is beating faster and your body temperature is higher, you could pass out or feel sick if you stop too fast. Stretching after physical activity allows a gradual decrease at the end of the episode.
Your muscles will likely become stiffer and more sore. When you exercise your muscles, it produces lactic acid (乳酸), which is actually what causes your muscles to become sore. When you rest between periods of exercise, your body naturally breaks down that lactic acid. One thing that helps your body get rid of that lactic acid? ____18____. Stretching helps you distribute oxygen throughout your body, which can reduce lactic acid production and rid your muscles of any accumulation of lactic acid.
____19____ Flexibility is closely related to injury risk. Poor flexibility will cause you to have muscles that get tired quicker and joints that are more likely to suffer from injury. Besides, your weakened range of motion will lead to less blood and nutrients to your joints. ____20____ Sticking to stretching exercise after physical activity can hopefully improve your flexibility.
A. You’ll be at risk of injury.
B. You guessed it: Stretching.
C You’ll improve your flexibility by stretching.
D. It does wonders for both your physical and mental health.
E. This is also known in the fitness world as “cooling down”.
F. There are harmful side effects if you don’t stretch after exercise.
G. That’s why people often feel pain in their “weight bearing” joints like knees and hips.
F 17. E 18. B 19. A 20. G
根据前文“Science shows that stretching (拉伸) is essential after exercise. Stretching lengthens and mobilizes the connective tissue around your muscle. What’s more, stretching helps your blood flow and even relieves your stress.”(科学研究表明,运动后的伸展运动是必不可少的。 下文“You could feel sick. ”(你会觉得恶心。)描述了不做拉伸带来的结果。所以作为本段的结尾可以描述,运动结束不做拉伸会带来一些不好的结果。F项“运动后不做伸展运动会有副作用。”,符合题意,故选F。
【17题详解】
根据前文“You won’t be surprised to know that when you exercise, you raise your heart rate for a period of time. While it’s great to get that blood flowing, it’s just as important to get your heart rate back to a normal level after the workout is over. ”(当你锻炼的时候,你会在一段时间内提高你的心率,你不会感到惊讶。虽然让血液流动是很好的,但是在锻炼结束后让你的心率恢复到正常水平也同样重要。)讲到运动结束后要让心率恢复到正常的水平是重要的。E项“这在健身界也被称为“降温”。this指代前文“to get your heart rate back to a normal level ”,符合题意,故选E。
根据前文“One thing that helps your body get rid of that lactic acid? ”(有什么东西能帮助你的身体摆脱乳酸?)可知,空处应讲述这种东西是什么。B项“你猜对了,(就是)伸展运动。”符合题意,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据下文“Flexibility is closely related to injury risk.”(柔韧性与受伤风险密切相关。)
根据前文“Poor flexibility will cause you to have muscles that get tired quicker and joints that are more likely to suffer from injury. Besides, your weakened range of motion will lead to less blood and nutrients to your joints.

It was somewhere between spring and summer, my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But little did I know this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car.
Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over. “What are you doing?” I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be struck there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom appeared, empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again. “Did you leave your name?” To this she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank-you for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.
注意:
1.续写词数应为75左右;
We were worrying about what could be done.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I asked Mom to stop the car and paced quickly into the shop where a bunch of roses glowing in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send Mom the sweet roses. Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again. Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.
We were worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a few minutes, mom and I decided to walk along the road back to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the nearby garage. There the old man who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, expressing his heartfelt thanks to us for bringing him a great day. It amazed me what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who need it badly. While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired.
