What do ten dollars, a garden, and Elon-Musk's brother have in common? They're used to fight against food insecurity and build the world's only biggest gardener community. Launched on the autumn equinox(秋分), the Million Gardens Movement (MGM) is a charitable and educational plan that hopes to put a garden in every family.
Kimbal Musk, Elon Musk's brother and the Executive Director of the non-profit Big Green, hoped that the MGM puts Little Green Garden units in homes and classrooms for just $10. He explains that each garden has its special growing plan and online lessons and activities to support the growth of culture-related vegetable gardens at home.
The MGM platform is simple as a whole. If you're a gardener, sign up to join the community. Donate$10 to a family that can't afford a garden, or that lives in a food desert, read and contribute to the blog and then tell other gardeners about it.
"Ten years ago, I co-founded Big Green focusing on under-resourced communities to increase access to fresh food," says Musk. "Today it's a national non-profit organization working with schools in several major cities with almost 640 outdoor leaning garden classrooms. The Million Gardens Movement is put forward to make it simple for anyone to give a family a garden. Planting a seed is an act of hope for a brighter tomorrow. We hope millions of people will join us to grow their own gardens and give a garden to a family."
They've been able to deliver garden kits to Denver, Detroit, Memphis and Indianapolis so far. "We hope to expand to Canada this year with sights on Vancouver and Toronto," adds Musk. "We also hope to expand to Mexico and beyond to make this a worldwide movement to encourage millions of people to grow their own food."

A solar-powered car that can be charged as it drives is being tested in Germany. Munich-based producer Sono Motors has built the new type, named Sion, and will likely help the European company hit its national goal of 1 million electric cars on the road.
Sono Motors which was founded in 2016 wants to achieve great development in the electric car market. It is on its way to beginning production of one of the first affordable electric cars—the Sion.
The Sion has a total of 248 solar cells built into the vehicle, which enable the vehicle to recharge its battery when sunlight is hitting the solar cells, whether it is on the road, or parked in the sunny spot in a car park. Sono Motors has also included support for traditional power outlets(电源插座)—so car owners aren't left on cloudy days.
The Sion also uses moss(苔藓) fixed into the dashboard to naturally change the wetness inside the car. The solar panel-packed vehicle is set to put into the market in Germany before long.
Sono Motors wants the Sion to be universal and hopes to allow the car to be charged using solar energy as well as traditional outlets. Some 8,800 people have already placed orders for the electric vehicle. Prices for the Sion tend to start from €16,000 next year. The all-electric vehicle will offer a range of up to 305 km before the battery runs out completely and it needs to recharge by either solar power or using a wall outlet, the company said.
The Sion was designed originally as an environmentally friendly car. It will also be designed around comfort to help it compete with other modern vehicles. "We have a seat heater and there is air conditioning and a large infotainment(资讯娱乐节目) system where I can also connect my phone interactively, which means I really have a vehicle which is very simple and has no decoration," Laurin Hahn, co-founder and CEO of the company told Reuters.
28. Why can the Sion continue to work even on a cloudy day?
A. It has 248 solar cells working.
B. It can use traditional power outlets.
C. It can be recharged wherever it stops.
D. It stores lots of energy ahead of time.
29. Why is the moss used in the Sion?
A. To decorate the car. B. To keep the air fresh.
C. To control the wetness. D. To change the temperature.
30. What can we know about the Sion from Laurin Hahn's words?
A. It is nicely decorated.
B. It is expected to be cheaper.
C. It has many unique functions.
D. It needs to be further improved.
31. What's the best title of the text?
A. The First Electric Cars Put into the Market
B. New Solar-powered Cars Developed in Germany
C. Sono Motors Contributing to Environmental Protection
D. The Solar-powered Cars Taking the Place of Traditional Cars

I grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, and every morning, sometimes before I woke up, my dad left for work. I didn't know much about what my dad actually did all day. But one thing I did know about my dad's day was that he often spent his lunch break looking for books for me. He would often come home in the evening with a book for me in his bag. When he handed the "gift" over to me, I immediately investigated its cover, checked out the description on the back, and sometimes started reading right then.
I was not always as appreciative of those books as I should have been, especially in my younger years. One time, my dad brought home a paperback(平装书) called Bunya the Witch. I scanned the cover quickly before declaring(断言), "Ugh! It's just another stupid farm book," and dropping it on the ground. I was rightfully reprimanded for being an ungrateful kid, and I learned that valuable lesson about not judging a book by its cover—Bunya the Witch turned out to be one of my favorites.
As I got older, my dad favored books focused on strong young female characters, like Invincible Louisa by Cornelia Meigs, Up a Road Slowly by Irene Hunt, and Homesick: My Own Story by Jean Fritz, books I remember to this day.
It's not just the books themselves that stay in my memory. It's the girl reading them, and what she felt as she read. I think back to hours spent in my childhood bedroom, reading about young women who faced lives much more difficult than mine. I learned from their courage and drew inspiration from their bravery.
To this day, I love to read. I love the excitement of opening up a new book and getting lost in whatever story the author wants to tell me. And quite often, when I've read something really wonderful, the first person I pass it along to is my dad. I figure I owe him.
32. What do we know about the young author from paragraph 1?
A. She asked for gifts every evening.
B. She was interested in books.
C. She cared about her dad's work.
D. She enjoyed investigating things.
33. What does the underlined word "reprimanded" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Ignored. B. Harmed. C. Selected. D. Blamed.
34. What lesson may the author learn from the three books mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. Treasure one's present life.
B. Never give up a book due to its cover.
C. One should fight against life's difficulties.
D. Teens can also achieve really great things.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Dad, me, and love of reading
B. Dad—my first teacher in life
C. Reading—a source of knowledge
D. Readers, books, and a key to success

第二节 任务型读写(共25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Steve was the most amazing person in all of Minneapolis, and he was my cousin. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite, Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station(护林站) where the forester worked.
Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. For supper we feasted on freeze—dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work.
Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil(铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams.
The snow had stopped, but some time later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames of our dying fire. I was suddenly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed(倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt.

应用文写作参考范文:
Hello, boys and girls,
As high school students, what attitude should we hold to money? Some people think that we can do anything if we have enough money. However, I don't think so. ①There is no doubt that money can buy many things we need. ②But there are lots of wonderful things in the world that cannot be got with money, such as knowledge and health. So, we need money but we should pay more attention to the things more important than money. Be the master of money instead of the slave.
Thank you!
读后续写参考范文:
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our clothes and supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest.
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to have a check. We jumped into the warm vehicle and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and were able to call our parents. Steve and I had many more camping adventures from then on, but it was on this trip that Steve began to treat me more like a friend rather than a younger cousin. Our friendship continues to this day.
