Du Fu (712-770), one of the greatest poets (诗人) in China, was born in Gongyi. Henan Province. He is famous to us.

The BBC’s video Du Fu: Chine’s Greatest Poet lets more people know the great poet. It lasts for (持续) an hour and it compares him to Dante and Shakespeare, two of the greatest masters of literature (文学) of the West.

Du’s works have been popular for centuries. “Chinese people really love his poetry.” said Zeng Xiangbo, a teacher at Renmin University of China.

Du lived under the rule of the Tang Emperor Xuanzong (712-756), and he worked for him. But after the An Lushan Rebellion of 755, he lived a hard life. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, showing his love for his country and people, as well as the simple joys of life.

Known as China’s “Saint (圣人) of poetry”, he wrote about 1,500 poems that are still with us today.

I was walking down the street in Beijing the other day and passed a couple (夫妻) sitting on a bench (长椅). “She must be 180cm tall,” I heard the woman say to the man. I turned to look them straight in the eye. I felt angry that they talked about me and stared (盯着) at me. The woman suddenly said, “Oh, she must understand Chinese.” “Yes, I do,” I replied. Then, they both smiled and laughed, and me, too.

This was not the first time in China when strangers stared on the road because I am a foreigner. As a shy person, this makes me feel quite uncomfortable. I just want to fit in (适应), so l usually just try to forget such people. But this time, as soon as I talked to the couple, they went from judgmental (评头论足的) strangers to people I just shared a warn and funny moment with.

I learnt how important it is to have the right attitude (态度) and to be understanding. There aren’t so many foreigners in China, so it’s only natural that people will feel curious about foreigners and how they look different. Although, when people stare, it feels a bit hostile (怀敌意的), most people are simply curious and may even want to talk with you.

In short, I can’t change this situation. The only thing I can change is my attitude toward it. Life is too short, we need to enjoy each moment with an active and open mind!

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences (影响) health, intelligence (智力) and feelings.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart problems and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, sometimes it is very hot and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart problems after the weather changes in February or Mach.

Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is a “good weather” for health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a report, IQ (智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse grades on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
