    Weald and Downland Living Museum
    Fun fact
Over 50 historic buildings from across the Weald and Downland area have been dismantled(拆除)and then reconstructed across a lovely 40-acre site in the South Downs national park. The collection of buildings represents almost a thousand years of rural life in south-east England: furnished just as they would have been in the past—complete with the homes, farms and public buildings. There’s a sense of exploring a real village as you wander between them along green paths, stopping to climb the stairs of a 17th-century craftsman’s(工匠)cottage to lie on the straw bed or sheltering from a shower in a smoky, 14th-century hall.
    Getting there
The Stagecoach 60 bus service from Chichester to Midhurst stops just five minutes away at Grooms Yard, Singleton. The nearest railway stations are Chichester(2 miles)and Haslemere(7 miles). The museum is on Town Lane in Singleton, reached via the A286 from Chichester to Midhurst. Parking is free and there are disabled parking spaces opposite the museum shop.
    Value for money?
Yes. It’s not cheap but it’s a special experience that easily fills a day. Plus, it’s a valuable cause worth supporting. Adults £14, children 5-17 and students £6.50, under-4s free, family £38(two adults and two children)or £25(one adult and three children).
    Opening hours
    Daily 10am-5pm(last entry 4pm).

FitzGerald is a 16-year-old long-distance runner from Devon, England, who has set a national record in the under-17s 3, 000 meters, but now she’s getting noticed for her commitment to saving the planet.
FitzGerald finished fourth in the under-20s race at the European Cross Country Championships in Italy last December, but her journey to get there made it even more impressive. To reach Turin in Italy, FitzGerald could have taken a quick flight. However, flying releases carbon dioxide. Instead, she took an overnight coach to Lille in France, then trains to first Paris, then Turin, cycling between stations. Despite her tiring journey, she beat athletes three years older than her.
FitzGerald turned down the chance to compete at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia. She told Athletics Weekly magazine that the decision wasn’t easy but that travelling fills her “with deep concern”. “To have the opportunity to compete for Great Britain in Australia is a privilege,” FitzGerald said. “However, I would never be comfortable flying in the knowledge that people could be losing their livelihoods, homes and loved ones as a result. The least I can do is voice my solidarity (团结一致) with those suffering on the front line of climate breakdown.”
FitzGerald’s refusal to fly has led people to compare her to the climate activist Thunberg, who once travelled to New York by boat. FitzGerald could travel by ship to Australia, but it would take her more than a month to get there. FitzGerald knows her choice to put the needs of the Earth first could affect her athletics career, but she has to act as if it’s an emergency.
Champions for Earth, an organization for environmentally-friendly athletes, said: “She is looking for sponsors and supporters who can help her with the more expensive public transport, accommodation and eco-friendly kit that she requires. It is clear that FitzGerald has the steely determination and focus, combined with the courage and clarity to face a reality quite different to athletes of previous generations.”
    24. Why did FitzGerald make headlines?
    A. Because she chose green transport instead of a flight to Italy.
    B. Because she made a national record in 3, 000 meters in England.
    C. Because she devoted all her time to eco-environment in England.
    D. Because she won the champion in the cross country race in Italy.
    25. What caused FitzGerald to refuse the competition in Australia?
    A. Ungreen travelling.
    B. Tiring competing in Italy.
    C. Changeable climate on the way.
    D. Affected athletics career.
    26. What do FitzGerald and Thunberg have in common?
    A. Acting immediately if there is an emergency.
    B. Preferring taking the ship instead of the flight.
    C. Spending all their life in protecting the environment.
    D. Choosing the eco-friendly means of transportation.
    27. Which can best describe FitzGerald according to Champions for Earth?
    A. Honest and outgoing.
    B. Determined and concentrated.
    C. Attractive and modest.
    D. Courageous and humorous.
    B
Studies estimate that we pick up our smartphones between 58 and 96 times a day. If my phone is by my side, then I’m constantly checking it. Last year, I decided to make a change: I signed up for the Phone Breakup Challenge. The goal isn’t to get rid of your phone, but to develop a more intentional way of using it.
The first few days were easy enough. Before unlocking my phone, I must answer three questions first: “What for? Why now? What else?” I kept the questions on my lock screen. On Day 7, I had lunch without my phone for company. It was pleasant. I realized that, by always having my phone on hand, I was preventing myself from sitting still with my thoughts.
One of the biggest lessons of the challenge was that willpower wasn’t enough, but having multiple barriers to make it less appealing and accessible did help. Day 20 was the long awaited 24-hour no-phone period. It was much easier not to check my phone when it was totally off instead of in another room. I noticed that a feeling of calm had spread within me.
It’s true that phones are fun and filled with my favorite people. There’s nothing wrong with mindless distraction. The problem is when that becomes a habit. Not constantly checking my phone helped reduce that annoying habit of texting and talking at the same time or pulling out my phone when being with someone I love hanging out with.
Now, I am pleased to see I really do use my phone less. When I get home, I leave my phone in my bag by the door instead of bringing it from room to room. I now also enjoy activities that I used to run out of time for, like going for neighborhood walks or trying new recipes.
    24. Why did the author take part in the Phone Breakup Challenge?
    A. To lead a life without using a phone.
    B. To improve her phone-using habit.
    C. To do research about the use of phones.
    D. To distract herself from social media.
    25. What can we learn about the author’s first few days of the challenge?
    A. She had a hard time ignoring her phone.
    B. She turned her phone off to avoid using it.
    C. She locked her phone with a new password
    D. She enjoyed keeping her phone away.
    26. What is a better way to keep away from our phones?
    A. Make it hard to access it.
    B. Find fun from other activities.
    C. Ask others for supervision.
    D. Build strong self-confidence.
    27. What message does the author convey in the text?
    A. Mindless distraction is a part of our lives.
    B. Reducing screen time is not so difficult.
    C. Spending less time on our phone is beneficial.
    D. Technology makes it hard for us to concentrate.
    C
As a popular subject of study among evolutionary ecologists, three-spined stickleback (三刺鱼)is known for their different shapes, sizes, and behaviors—they can even live in both seawater and freshwater, and under a wide range of temperatures. But what makes that?
The researchers tracked six populations of the fish before and after seasonal changes to their environment, using genome sequencing. Seasonal changes result in great changes in habitat structure and balance of salt and freshwater, and only those fish able to tolerate these rapid changes survive into the next season.
“These changes probably resemble the habitat shifts experienced by stickleback populations during the past 10,000 years.” says Professor Barrett “We hope to gain insight into the genetic changes that may have resulted from natural selection long in the past.”
Remarkably, the researchers discovered the evidence of genetic changes driven by the seasonal shifts in habitats, which mirrored the differences found between long-established freshwater and saltwater populations. “These genetic changes occurred in independent populations over a single season, highlighting just how quickly the effects of natural selection can be detected,” says Professor Barrett, “The findings suggest that we may be able to use the genetic differences to predict how populations may adapt to environment.”
The research emphasizes the importance of studying species in dynamic environments to gain a better understanding of how natural selection operates. In further research, they plan to investigate how repeatable the observed genetic changes are, by testing whether they show up year after year. Doing so would demonstrate their ability to reliably forecast the evolutionary future of these populations.
28.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph l?
A.Stickleback is under a wide range of temperatures.
B.Stickleback is popular with evolutionary ecologists.
C.Stickleback can adapt to different living conditions.
D.Stickleback has different shapes, sizes, and behaviors.
29.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
    A.The challenges of the research.
    B.The purpose of the research.
    C.The background of the research.
D.The methods used in the research.
30.According to Professor Barrett, what is the significance of the findings?
A.They reveal differences between freshwater and saltwater populations.
B.Scientists will be able to prove natural selection happens quickly.
C.They help to make predictions about population adaption.
D.Scientists can better preserve stickleback population.
31.Why will scientists study the repetition of the genetic changes?
A.To gain a better understanding of natural selection.
B.To make sure they show up year after year.
C.To test the reliability of the present discoveries.
D.To predict the evolutionary future of the species.
    D
From rolling hills to mountain ranges, views make any road trip memorable, but for blind passenger this is part of the experience they miss. Motor company Ford tries to change that. It teamed up with GTB Roma and Ae do Project—to develop a technology that will give those unfortunate passengers away to feel nature’s beauty through their car windows.
The prototype (原型) of the smart car window has a device with an outside-facing camera. With just a press of a button, the system takes a picture of the current view. The colorful picture is then turned into an image with different shades of grey through LED lights, which vibrates (震动) differently. As the finger passes over different regions of the image, its shaking movements provide feedback through the sense of touch to the person using it. The smart window also comes with a voice assistant that uses AI to identify the scene and help the passengers get information on what they’re seeing.
“As the prototype started taking shape, we realized we were giving birth to a completely new language that would give blind people a new chance to visualize and experience traveling,” Federico Russo, one director of GTB Roma, said. “When the idea was at its first stage, we looked for suppliers all around the world to make it come to life.” He believes the technology can be employed not just in cars. “It could be introduced into schools and institutions for blind people as a tool that could be used in multiple ways.”
The technology may show up in a Ford autonomous vehicle. It’s known that the company is testing their technology and future business model and struggling to figure out how an autonomous vehicle gives different passengers the details needed to get from one destination to another. It’s unclear when this technology will be made available. However, the idea of building something for the less advantaged is indeed a kind and influential action.
32.How does the smart car window work?
    A.By changing shades of colors.
B.By recording the view with a camera.
    C.By classifying shaking movements.
    D.By translating scenery into vibrations.
33.What does Federico Russo say about the technology?
    A.It will have wide application.
B.It will be tested across the world.
C.It will be used in schools first.
    D.It will understand many languages.
    34.What difficulty is Ford facing?
    A.Developing autonomous cars.
    B.Exploring their future business model.
    C.Providing route information.
D.Applying the technology to everyday life.
35.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A I-based Window Adds Fun to Road Trips
B.Smart Window Lets Blind Passengers Feel Views
C.Technology Makes the Blind’s Trip Enjoyable
D.Ford Develops a System for the Blind to Drive

    阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Jumping rope is popular but we tend to ignore (忽视) its benefits. 36 A study found that college men who spent 10 minutes jumping rope daily for six weeks improved their cardiovascular (心血管的) fitness just as much as college men who spent thirty minutes jogging for the same time. Here are some benefits of jumping rope.
    37
Since most of your major muscles are working when you jump rope, the exercise creates a lot of heat in the body. Your body needs to burn more fuel to produce this energy, so it burns lots of calories. It burns more calories than any other exercises, such as jogging, cycling and swimming.
    Improves coordination (协调)
Jumping rope requires good coordination, especially as you advance to more skilled moves. 38 It improves coordination by requiring several body parts to communicate in order to complete one movement. The feet must jump in time with the wrists turning in order to create a continuous jumping motion.
    Reduces injury risk
With your improved coordination from jumping rope, you’ll be less likely to get hurt either during exercise or in daily activities. 39 As a result, you are more agile (灵活的) and your body awareness is improved greatly. This guarantees fewer injuries.
    Improves heart health
Since jumping rope gets your heart pumping, it’s great for your cardiovascular system and heart health. Jumping rope can increase your VO2 Max (最大摄氧量), the measure of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can breathe during exercise. The higher someone’s VO2 max, the more cardiovascular endurance (耐受力) they have.
Jumping rope gives us a full-body workout with just one piece of equipment and one move. 40 Jump to some music, or take your rope to a nearby park to enjoy the fun.
    A. Burns calories
    B. Improves muscles
    C. It benefits us not only physically but also mentally.
    D. You can quickly swing the rope twice within each jump.
    E. It may even be more effective than other forms of exercise.
    F. Jumping rope forces you to move your upper and lower body together.
    G. So jumping rope helps you stay calm, clear and focused in everything you do.

Many senior high school students have children's books that they no longer need. However, my school organized a book drive, with the purpose donating books to disadvantaged families with young children. The activity lasts for a week and students in my school were encouraging to collect gently used children's books from family members, friends and neighbors. I, along with other volunteers, were responsible for checking the donated books and packing it. In order to perform the task well, I had learned how to packing things from my father in the advance. Though I was tiring at the end of the week, I was happy what I got involved in doing something that could make a difference to the community.

    【参考范文】
I had always felt that the last year of senior high school was the bitterest time of my life, until last Friday.
At lunch break, my classmate and I went to the teacher’s office to ask questions, only to find our math teacher sleeping with her head on the arms, some medicine beside her, as well as some exercise books. Then we hurried back to our classroom. I placed a chair behind the teacher’s desk, and my friend put a glass of warm water on it.
Entering the classroom, our teacher smiled at what we had done, and soon began her lesson. We all felt worried when hearing her cough from time to time. We listened attentively and tried to memorize every point she mentioned. After school, some of us visited her in the office with some fruits and snacks. And our teacher was still busy working at her desk…
That day, I realized we were lucky to have these dedicated teachers and that the busy days were not bitter but bitter-sweet.

    Text 1
W: Have you noticed that people here in Mexico stand very close together?
M: Yes. It’s the same in Peru too.
W: It’s the opposite in Britain. I was a little uncomfortable here at first. But after a few days, I’m getting used to it.
    Text 2
W: Are you going to Brian’s birthday party tonight?
M: Oh my gosh, it totally slipped my mind! I didn’t even reply to his invitation. I’ve got football practice tonight.
W: That’s too bad. I’ll let him know you’re not able to make it.
    Text 3
M: How are you and your roommate getting along?
W: Pretty well. She usually comes home late, but she’s always careful not to make any noise in case I’m sleeping. She’s very thoughtful.
    M: That’s nice.
W: Yeah. She’s a real change from my old roommate, who only cared about herself.
    Text 4
M: This town is a healthy place to live in. There are many trees, and the air quality is good. I guess that’s because there isn’t a lot of industry.
W: Yeah. But no industry means no jobs. It is difficult to find work around here. The city should bring more businesses here.
    Text 5
M: What an awful month we are having!
W: It’s pretty bad, isn’t it? So hot and wet. It’s hard to sleep at night in our dormitory.
M: It’s not usually this hot in the fall. Well, I think I’m going to get some more ice cream in the store.
    Text 6
W: How are you going to get home later, Harry?
M: Oh, I can just take a bus or a taxi. There are usually plenty of taxis in front of this restaurant at night.
W: Yes, but not on a Sunday night. You might wait for a long time. Why don’t you ask Kevin to drive you home? He’s having dinner with us and he lives near you.
M: That’s right. I’ll ask him when he’s back from the bathroom.
    Text 7
M: Hello, I’m a manager from Sunrise Supermarket headquarters to conduct a survey about customer satisfaction. I was wondering if you could tell me a little about your experience in shopping here.
W: Sure, I shop here all the time. It’s become a really good place to shop since the owner decided to move here last year.
M: I see, did you shop at Sunrise Supermarket when it was located on Brighton Avenue?
W: I went there a few times but the store was so small. I didn’t have a wide selection like we have here.
    Text 8
W: Thanks for letting me borrow the tent, Sam.
M: No problem, Tara. I was worried it’d be too small.
W: It was a little tight but we managed. We’ll have to get a big one for next time. Anyway, it was a great camping trip!
M: Are you going again soon?
W: No, we’re practicing our rock climbing for a little while to get into shape.
M: It’s great for building strength! Me and Shelly do it at the climbing center just out of town. It’s fun solving the puzzle of how to get up, and exciting too!
W: True that! My gym has a practice wall but we’d like to do it in the wild one day!
M: I have a guide I can recommend. He’ll take you to the best climbing spot and it has all the equipment too!
W: Great! Do you want to practice together?
M: Sure, I’m going with Shelly at 6 pm tonight.
W: Excellent. I’ll meet you at the center then!
    Text 9
W: John, I want to start an online store for homemade items. I want to sell handmade candles, soap, and other household things.
M: Great idea! It sounds like it can be unique.
W: I’ve been researching and I found out that this market area is not overly competitive and there’s huge demand.
M: So, what’s your next step?
W: I want to start by reaching out to local artists and see if they’re interested in partnering with me and I’d offer a platform for them to sell their products.
M: Good idea! It’d be a win-win for both of you. What about deliveries?
W: I’ve been thinking about that. I want to offer free delivery for orders over a certain amount, and for smaller orders, I’ll charge a small fee.
    M: And how about packaging?
W: I want to make sure the products are packaged well. I’m investing in packaging materials that are recyclable.
M: That sounds great. I’m sure it will be successful. Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.
W: Thanks, John. I really appreciate it.
    Text 10
M: Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Crowne Plaza business center at Coogee Beach. I’m David Bowers, your host for the next two days, and I just want to give you some practical information. OK. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe which is just inside the main entrance to the hotel. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 2:30 in the private dining room. This evening you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming pool. The General Manager usually makes a short welcome speech. I’d like to apologize for the temperature. I’m afraid it’s a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime. Right. There are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has canceled her talk and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated program is being printed at the moment. OK now, before we go for breakfast, are there any questions?

    21. What can visitors do in Weald & Downland Living Museum?
A.Take a shower in the hall.
    B.Stay overnight at a cottage.
    C.Learn construction techniques.
    D.Explore rural life centuries ago.
22.What do we know about Weald & Downland Living Museum?
    A.It charges parking fees.
    B.It has varied opening hours.
C.It is inconveniently located for bus riders.
D.It offers the disabled thoughtful service.
23.How much would a couple with their 5-year-old twin sons pay for admission?
    A.£25. B.£34.5. C.£38. D.£41.
    【答案】21.D 22.D 23.C
    【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了Weald & Downland生活博物馆的相关信息。
21.细节理解题。根据Fun fact中“There’s a sense of exploring a real village as you wander between them along green paths, stopping to climb the stairs of a 17th-century craftsman’s(工匠)cottage to lie on the straw bed or sheltering from a shower in a smoky, 14th-century hall.”(当你沿着绿油油的小路漫步在这些村庄之间,停下来爬上17世纪工匠小屋的楼梯,躺在稻草床上,或者在烟雾缭绕的14世纪大厅里淋浴时,你会有一种探索真正村庄的感觉。)可知,游客可以在Weald & Downland生活博物馆探索几个世纪前的乡村生活。故选D项。
22.细节理解题。根据Getting there中“Parking is free and there are disabled parking spaces opposite the museum shop.”(停车是免费的,博物馆商店对面有残疾人停车位。)可知,Weald & Downland为残障人士提供周到的服务。故选D项。

    【答案】24. B 25. D 26. A 27.

    【答案】36. E37. A38. D39. F40. C

    【答案】
