Dream job in the Antarctic includes counting penguins
Always wanted to count penguins in Antarctica? Well now you can, with the Penguin Watch project, launched today by Oxford University.
Penguins—globally loved, but under threat. Research shows that in some regions, penguin populations are in decline; but why? Click “get started” to begin monitoring penguins, and help us answer this question. With over 100 sites to explore, we need your help now more than ever!
Workers have to count penguins and other wildlife for the British Antarctic Survey, and a report is due by the end of employment. Other duties include managing the gift shop and the post office on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory Government. The post office says it gets about 80,000 pieces of mail a season.
According to the application, the successful candidate “will need to be physically and medically able to do the job.” Living conditions are “basic but comfortable,” but there is limited power and no running water or Internet access, which means “very minimal communication” to the outside world.
It’s not just for fun, though; the project has some important implications. With their findings, the researchers hope to detail the effects of climate change by analyzing data on timing of breeding, survival rate of chicks, and rate of predation on chicks.
For those interested below 35 years old, the application can be found here, with a deadline at 7:59 p. m. on August 25. International candidates can apply, but they must have the right to work in the United Kingdom and fluent in English, and those selected will have a week of training in Cambridge in October.
If you would like to support our work, we would be extremely grateful. Here are some ways you can get involved:
£50—Become a Penguin Pen Pal, and we will send you a postcard from our next field season in Antarctica.
£l50—Sponsor a Penguinologist, and receive a little pack of Penguin Watch goodies.
1.What task is included in the candidate’s work, according to the text?

“In the future, everybody will be famous for 15 minutes,” said US artist Andy Warhol (1928—1987). And he is quite right. Now it seems that anybody can become an instant online celebrity.
Warhol is best noted for his paintings that represent celebrity faces and US consumer goods, like Coca-Cola bottles or Campbel’s soup cans. As a great influence on the twentieth century pop art movement, Andy Warhol rose to become a cornerstone in the contemporary art world, devoted to bringing his views on materialism, politics and economics to the art. Actually, the visual world Warhol created is directly connected to his background.
In the mid-1950s, the working class gathered a great deal of fortune. They wanted to achieve a higher status in society. The consumer goods and Hollywood faces are a “working-class-coded iconography (肖像;意象) that is often misinterpreted as generally ‘American’.” Anthony E. Grudin, author of Warhol’s Working Class commented. Reproducing these themes in his work meant that people outside of the art world could immediately connect with Warhol’s pictures. Considered “a creature of transformation”, Warhol constantly explored with different forms of media to evoke resonance among people.
For example, in addition to being a painter, Warhol was, in the words of UK writer Peter Wollen: “A filmmaker, a writer, a photographer, a TV soap opera producer.” Warhol, in short, was what we might call a ‘Renaissance (文艺复兴) man’, even though he was a leader in pop or perhaps post-modern art.”
In his later years, he founded Interview Magazine and wrote several books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol. But UK artist Gillian Wearing said, “Warhol left his mark in many more ways than his actual work.” Warhol’s works are all about “America, money, fame and death”, UK writer Jon Savage remarked. “He summed up, defined and in many ways symbolized the world in which we now live.
4.What’s Andy Warhol’s purpose of creating his paintings?
A.To highlight Renaissance style. B.To attain fame and higher status.
C.To combine art with materialism. D.To challenge traditional art forms.
5.What do Andy Warhol’s paintings focus on?
    A.Popular drinks. B.Average people.
C.Commercial products. D.Living scenes of working class.
6.What does the underlined phrase “evoke resonance” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A.Inspire connection. B.Receive recognition.
    C.Raise inspiration. D.Gain sympathy.
7.What kind of person is Andy Warhol according to the text?
A.Creative and critical. B.Conservative and realistic.
    C.Optimistic and encouraging. D.Constructive and multi-talented.

By 2050, our global population might have been beyond nine billion, bringing with it an expected 70% increase in global demand for meat and fish. As a result, the growing demand for soya-based farm feed is driving massive destruction of forests at an alarming rate, and sea animal populations have halved in the last four decades due to widespread overfishing.
With 10 million pounds funding, part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, a start-up company Entocycle is leading a cooperation that will build the UK’s first industrial-scale insect farm. Black soldier flies(黑水虻)are used to convert food waste from farms and factories into a sustainable, organic insect-based protein feed, as an alternative to soya, for farmed animals, namely pigs, chicken and fish. In short the company is using food waste to create insect protein to feed the animals that we eat, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions(排放)and deforestation.
Following its formation in 2017, Entocycle spent time developing its technology as part of the European Space Agency Business Incubation Centre United Kingdom(ESA BIC UK), which is managed and partly funded by STFC. Entocycle acquired the expert knowledge to develop a network of cutting edge sensors, originally designed for use in space, to monitor and optimize(优化)the black soldier flies’ lifecycle. They combined this with big data analysis to develop their proprietary technology to mass-rear flies, scalable for industrial use, STFC’s Dr Sue O’Hare, Operations Manager at the ESA BIC UK, said, “Entocycle is a first-class example of how space technology can be applied to address one of the most important global challenges we currently face —how to feed the world without harming our planet.”
It is fantastic to know that the ESA BIC UK, part of the world’s largest business incubation program for space tech start-ups, was able to provide the right environment and support to play a part in the early development of this world-changing technology. This is a significant milestone for Entocycle as it seeks to make a real and positive impact on making our food supply chains more environmentally sustainable.
8.How does the author develop his opinion in paragraph 1?

It came as no surprise that being interrupted by other people can have negative effects, like lowered productivity. But a new study shows an upside to these interruptions at work: increased feelings of belonging.
Researchers led by Harshad Puranik at the University of Illinois at Chicago looked at this common workplace phenomenon from two aspects. First, interruptions get in the way of completing assignments and require employees to repeatedly switch attention between tasks. That's where the negative effects of interruptions happen. However, beyond the task-based aspect, the group found that being interrupted by others has a social component to it — social interaction with the interrupter that can have a positive effect on the interrupted employees. "If the past year of social distancing and separation has shown us anything, it is that humans are social beings who have an inherent (内在的) need for interacting with others," said Puranik.
Building on previous research on work interruptions, the researchers surveyed 111 full-time employees twice a day once at lunch and once at the end of their workday for three weeks. While there were downsides to interruptions al work, like raising levels of stress and lowering people’s energy, there was an upside, the researchers found. Employees felt more like they belonged, which eventually allowed them to get more pleasure from their work routines.
The study found something else on top of this. The social aspect of work interruptions also weakened the negative impact that the switching of tasks during interruptions had on employees job satisfaction. This means that, intend of the negative experience, being interrupted at work can be "a net positive for the well-being of employees, "according to Puranik. Therefore, the researchers urge managers to better manage rather than completely prohibit work interruptions.
12.Why does the author mention Puranik's words in Paragraph 2?
A.To introduce a new argument. B.To make his points more persuasive.
C.To summarize the whole paragraph. D.To provide some advice for the readers.
13.What did researchers find about work interruptions in social aspect?
A.They caused more anxiety. B.They improved work-life balance.
C.They lowered labor productivity. D.They led to higher job satisfaction.
14.Who is the text intended for?
    A.Employers. B.Employees. C.Job seekers. D.Interviewers.
15.What's the best title of the text?
A.Scientific Management Counts B.Ways of Staying Focused at Work
C.Interruptions at Work Bring Positive Sides D.Reasons for Avoiding Interruptions at Work

What Can We See in a Logo?
We see hundreds of logos on signs, vehicles, websites, and even on the clothes we wear. All of these logos are designed to attract our attention. They also help us remember a product or service connected to that image. 16
Researchers gave 85 students a simple assignment to draw the Apple logo purely from memory. Surprisingly, only one student in the study could accurately draw the logo from memory. 17
Researchers have developed a theory that they think might help to explain this blind spot in our memories.
Logos are typically designed to be simple and easy to recognize with a quick glance. 18 This process is known as “attentional saturation (注意力饱和).” Our brains actually signal us to ignore information we don’t think we will need to remember.
Even though the brain is accustomed to ignoring unnecessary details, it is also programmed for recognition. 19 This constant exposure leads to something scientists refer to as gist (梗概) memory. It means that our brain remembers the basic idea without all of the details. This general sense of memory has its own benefits. In fact, familiarity with a popular logo can even make people feel more comfortable about purchasing or using certain products.
Logos are everywhere we look today. A fancy design or a thoughtful color combination may be a good start for a logo concept, but there are other factors to consider. 20 A clever design may be interesting, but most people will forget the details—especially if our brains have anything to say about it.
A.This may be inspiring to logo designers.
B.People will know the product behind the logo.
C.So why is it so difficult for people to recall the details of images?
D.Yet the frequent exposure to these logos can actually make our brains overlook them.
E.When we see images such as logos over and over again, we become familiar with them.
F.Logo designers need to know that people will only remember what they believe is worthwhile.
G.However, recently research supports the idea that remembering what a logo looks like is a very difficult task.

When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completed ruined. Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human-interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered the hardest.
One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely shattered(破碎的) mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downward. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear.
The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I stuck the picture of the young family on our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them. I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods.
While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up old toys and games.
Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, much-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. She came to the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat, painted-on-face, gave her a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh, Honey,” I said.” You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously, eyes filled with held-back tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make that other little girl happy, too.”
    Paragraph. 1:
The boys had watched,open-mouthed,as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.

They also help us remember a product or service connected to that image.(所有这些商标都是为了吸引我们的注意而设计的。
17.下文“Researchers have developed a theory that they think might help to explain this blind spot in our memories.(研究人员发展出一种理论,他们认为可能有助于解释我们记忆中的这个盲点)”中出现指代this blind spot,根据指代关系可知,上文中应明确其指代对象,C 项“So why is it so difficult for people to recall the details of images?(那么,为什么人们回忆起图像的细节如此困难呢?)”
18.下文“This process is known as ‘attentional saturation (注意力饱和).’ (这个过程被称为‘注意力饱和’)”中提出“注意力饱和”这一概念,再根据句中指代This process可推知,设空句中描述的就是“注意力饱和”这一现象,D 项“Yet the frequent exposure to these logos can actually make our brains overlook them.(然而,频繁接触这些商标实际上会让我们的大脑忽略它们)”中所说“频繁接触这些商标会让大脑忽略它们”即“注意力饱和”,上下文构成逻辑上的指代关系和语意上的解释说明关系。故选D项。
19.下文“This constant exposure leads to something scientists refer to as gist (梗概) memory.(这持续的接触引起科学家所说的‘梗概记忆’)”中出现指代This constant exposure,根据指代关系可知,上文中应明确其指代对象,E 项“When we see images such as logos over and over again, we become familiar with them.(当我们一遍又一遍地看到商标之类的图像时,我们就会对它们变得熟悉起来)”中所述“see images such as logos over and over again”即下文的This constant exposure,上下文构成指代关系。故选E项。
20.上文“A fancy design or a thoughtful color combination may be a good start for a logo concept, but there are other factors to consider.(一个巧妙的设计或一个深思熟虑的颜色组合可能是一个良好的商标概念的开始,但还有其他因素需要考虑)”讲商标设计还需要考虑设计本身之外的其它因素,F 项“Logo designers need to know that people will only remember what they believe is worthwhile.(商标设计师需要知道,人们只会记住他们认为有价值的东西)”明确指出,设计师需要考虑到人们只会记住他们认为有价值的东西这一现实,F项是对上文语意的补充,与其构成顺承关系。

故填were brought。
故填by。
故填to create。
the +名词+of。故填appearance。
Since the appearance of modern mechanical umbrellas可知,空处谓语动词应用现在完成时,表示过去的动作或状态持续到现在,对现在造成的影响。 故填have suffered。
故填the。
故填that/which。
    Dear Peter,
I’m glad to hear that you want to buy some gifts for your mother that represent Chinese culture. And I am writing to give you some advice.
Personally, I think you should buy the following two gifts: Qipao and Chinese knot. Qipao, a very beautiful traditional dress for Chinese women, can show the real beauty of a woman. I am sure your mother will like it very much. What’s more, it is also a good choice for you to buy the Chinese knot. It is usually hung in the sitting room or cars, which represents good luck.
Please give my best wishes to your family.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    Dear Peter,
Gladly learning that you will return to your motherland and intend to bring your mother some gifts representing Chinese culture, I am writing to give you some advice.
Personally, I think you should buy the following two gifts: Qipao and Chinese knot. Qipao, a very beautiful traditional dress for Chinese women, can show the real beauty of a woman. I am sure your mother will like it very much. Besides, it is also a good choice for you to buy the Chinese knot, which illustrates good luck for you all.
By the way, please give my best wishes to your family.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    喜欢:love→like
And I am writing to give you some advice.
And I am writing to give you some advice, which I believe will help you.
【点睛】[高分句型1]I’m glad to hear that you want to buy some gifts for your mother that represent Chinese culture.
[高分句型2]It is usually hung in the sitting room or cars, which represents good luck.
47.The boys had watched, open-mouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box. Without a word, Brad rose and went to his room. He came back carrying one of his favorite action figures. He hesitated briefly, clutching the toy, then looked over at Meghan and placed it in the box next to Lucy. A slow smile spread across Brett’s face. Then he jumped up, eyes twinkling as he ran to fetch some of his prized Matchbox cars. Astonished, I realized that the boys had also recognized what little Meghan’s gesture meant.
I looked at my children for a long moment. Swallowing back tears, I pulled all three of them into my arms. Inspired by my little ones, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes. I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. It’s easy to give what we don’t want any more, but harder to let go of things we cherish. However, the true spirit of giving is to give with your heart.

    ②.忍住泪水:swallowing back/holding back tears
    ①.惊讶:astonished / amazed / be surprised
    ②.犹豫:hesitate/stand at

Swallowing back tears, I pulled all three of them into my arms. Inspired by my little ones, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes.(由现在分词作伴随状语)
I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had found on sale last week.(that引导的定语从句)
