We focus mainly on shorter novels and poetry, but may also look at longer works such as Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. We consider not only the meanings of the works but also how they are written to give them their power. Additionally, we pay attention to how literature sounds and how it makes us feel. Students are expected to write a number of informal reaction pieces, contribute actively to class discussion, take part in a few short creative projects, and prepare short papers and oral presentations on works of their own choice. Students learn how to read actively, think analytically, present their ideas clearly, and work with others—all skills that will be invaluable to them in college and in their professional and personal lives. No previous knowledge or course work is required. Instructor: Mark Blacher Mark Blacher holds a master’s degree in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While at UCLA he taught classics of world literature, and taught students close reading and expository writing (说明文). Mark’s undergraduate degree is from Columbia University. He has worked with Columbia’s Pre-College Programs for over thirty years. 26. What do we know about the course? A. It lasts one month.  B. It is given on weekdays. C. It requires previous knowledge.  D. It starts with To the Lighthouse. 27. What are students supposed to do? A. Create short projects on their own.  B. Recommend books to other students. C. Take an active part in class discussion.  D. Share their reading and writing strategies. 28. Which of the following words can best describe Mark Blacher? A. Optimistic.  B. Determined.  C. Experienced.  D. Adventurous. BThe incident took place, believe it or not, on the playground. I was something of a football player, but I had never been a good player, far less a great one. I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. The result was that, though I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm, I was never picked for my college team. Let me confess frankly that this was only because there was another player in the same position who happened to be much better than me. I considered myself the better sportsman, but he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait and bide my time. And at last my patience was rewarded. It was for me a very special day. Our team had shot up into the final and was meeting its rival (竞争对手). Our star-player sent word at the last moment that he was ill and he could not take the field. Imagine the astonishment in the college camp! The thought was that the game was as good as lost, and so also, I confess, did I for this player was our trump card (王牌): That is what everybody always said. However, something had to be done, and that something had to be myself! The captain called me up almost apologetically for having failed to recognize my greatness before, and—there I was, on the playground, greeted by the cheers of my friends, and a few jeers from those who had little faith in my prowess. I can tell you that I played like a demon (技艺出众的人). I was here, there and everywhere—now leading the attack, now falling back to help the defense. It was indeed a thrilling moment in my life. For a time, I was the center of all attention, the object of universal applause, and “the observed of all observers”. And, believe it or not, it was I who put in the winning goal. It marked the top of a glorious day. Even now I look back on the episode with unmixed pleasure and satisfaction. 29. What can you learn about the author from the first two paragraphs? A. He was chosen into the college team.  B. He intended to be a professional player. C. He performed better than any other player.  D. He showed great interest in playing football. 30. What was the author’s patience rewarded? A. He received the captain’s sincere apology.  B. He helped his school team to enter the final. C. He was finally considered as the trump card.  D. He became a replacement for the sick player. 31. Why did the author say it was a thrilling moment in his life? A. He showed off his patience to the fullest.  B. The audience applauded his performance. C. The audience observed players attacking.  D. He played attentively in the final match. 32. What can we learn from the author’s experience? A. Patience is the best medicine.  B. Care and diligence bring luck. C. Great hopes make a great man.  D. Opportunity is for the prepared. CIn September 2022, Artemis Technologies company presented a new type of water ferry (渡船). The Artemis E—24 is the world’s first high-speed, electric, zero-emissions ferry. Currently, the only way to get from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Bangor, Wales without getting on a plane, is to take a bus or train to Dublin, Ireland and to get on a ferry there. However, that could all change with Artemis E-24 to be applied literally. The first Artemis E-24 is expected to set sail on a route between Belfast and Bangor as early as 2024. But actually the road to its creation began nearly 20 years ago, in 2005, when Olympic medalist, Dr. Iain Percy, joined the Artemis Racing sailing team. The Artemis ferry used the same hydrofoil (水翼船) technology that the Artemis Racing America’s Cup racing yachts did. It is this technology that can lift the boat out of the water as it picks up speed, much like an airplane’s wings, that make it seem as if it is flying. Beyond the coolness factor, the reasons why Artemis E-24 uses the hydrofoil technology are practical. Raising the boat above the water, and reducing drag leads to up to a 85 percent reduction in fuel costs. Likewise, the reduced drag also minimizes the impact that running the ship has on shorelines. Reduced drag means lower waves. The environmental benefit of a transportation technology is obvious to all. However, it also has practical benefits. As Dr. Percy told The Irish World, “this ferry will not only be the cheapest, but also the fastest way in water-based cities. It will get commuters (通勤者) to where they are going in 25 minutes. In addition, this new initiative will also bring more than 1,000 new jobs into the Belfast area over the next few years.”The Artemis Ferry is a proof to the fact that new and creative technologies can make huge impacts, not only for the world and the environment, but for the local economies that produce them. 33. Why is the route from Belfast to Bangor mentioned in paragraph 1? A. To analyse the new ferry.  B. To make a list of evidence. C. To come up with an idea.  D. To add the background of the topic. 34. What does paragraph 2 mainly show? A. The shape of the Artemis E-24.  B. The origin of the new invention. C. The experiences of an Olympic medalist.  D. The effect of the hydrofoil technology. 35. How can we describe the Artemis E-24? A. It is light and energy-efficient.  B. It is cheap and fully automatic. C. It is high-speed and cost-effective.  D. It is oil-burning and multifunctional. 36. What is the best title of the text? A. New Flying Ferry Could Revolutionize Water Travel B. New Technology Balances Economy and Environment C. The Artemis Ferry with Airplane’s Wings Will Set SailD. Hydrofoil Technology Leads to Reduction in Fuel Costs DBy 2100, cities around the world could warm by 4℃ on average, exposing the growing urban population to conditions that will damage human’s life. Cities are on the frontlines, dealing daily with the impacts of climate change. At this year’s 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced a new initiative—the Nature for Cool Cities Challenge, which encourages cities to use the cooling power of nature. Solutions such as forests, green belts and parks in and around cities can deliver cooling services, without damaging emissions. The cooling benefits of such solutions are well-documented, but they need to be better understood and managed to bring about changes at a global level. Cities across the world that are already too hot in summer are taking a variety of measures from insisting new buildings have gardens on their roofs, painting existing roofs white, to coloring roads light grey and planting trees in streets and open spaces. The good news is that all these measures work, mitigating land surface temperatures by 2℃ to 3℃ in the areas where they are applied. Qatar, host country of 2022 World Cup, surprises the world with an open mind about using technological innovation to deal with the environmental challenges of living in the desert. The government has implemented a pilot “cool pavement” project in the capital, Doha, which involves the use of a cooling material to decrease the temperature of the asphalt (沥青) on roads. Unlike conventional asphalt, which contributes to increased temperatures by absorbing up to 95 percent of sunlight, the so-called “cool pavement” reflects UV rays and absorbs solar radiation to a lesser extent, contributing to overall temperature reduction in a greener way. The government, using the World Cup event as a platform, is seeking for partnership with more countries in addressing global environmental issues. Many hands make light work. Just as Sheila Aggarwal—Khan, Director of UNEP’s Economy Division put it, “Truly effective solutions require partnership between governments, the private sectors, experts, and practitioners, nationally and internationally. It is decisive that the joint efforts from financial institutions, investors and businesses help make this vision a reality.”37. What does UNEP’s new initiative aim to do? A. Cool cities with nature-based methods.  B. Cut down the emissions in public places. C. Document the benefits of living in the city.  D. Decrease urban population to improve living. 38. What does the underlined word “mitigating” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Reducing.  B. Increasing.  C. Maintaining.  D. Adjusting. 39. How does the new material work in Qatari “cool pavement” project? A. It takes in much of the sunlight. B. It enlarges the exposure to solar radiation. C. It helps improve the air quality of Doha effectively. D. It absorbs less and reflects more than traditional materials. 40. What did Sheila Aggarwal-Khan stress? A. Finance.  B. Cooperation.  C. Professionalism.  D. Management. 第二节 (5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。Finding an apartment can be challenging for many people. I was there, not by choice, but because teacher Alice wanted each of us to try out for a part. As a “good” student, I did what I was asked, even if it was scary. I was small for my age, wore secondhand clothes and cried easily. At school, I was often the object of jokes and laughter and had few friends. I wanted desperately to shrink back into my seat and be invisible. But there I was, on stage. Reading was, at least, something I loved. So, I read. I finished reading and rushed back to my scat. The spell (咒语) was broken. I wanted to curl up and disappear. When the teacher read the cast list and called my name, I wasn’t paying attention. No one ever chose me for anything. “Patty,” she repeated, “You are Star. Come and get your script.”This is impossible! How can it be? With a pounding heart and cold, sweaty hands, I felt nearly dizzy, but incredibly happy. I walked up unsteadily to get the papers. On returning to my desk, I felt regretful. I should have refused. I felt as if everyone else were looking at and laughing at me. I buried my head in my arms. Gently patting my shoulder, teacher Alice said, “Be confident, Patty. You can do this. I know you can. I’ll help you.” With tears in my eyes, I raised my head and nodded firmly. So, I practiced every day—while walking to school, at lunchtime, before bedtime, even on weekends. At first, I was worried about forgetting parts of a long monologue () that took place in one scene, but I managed to memorize it. I felt more confident after that. At last, it was the day for the show. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。Everything went smoothly until it was my turn to give the long monologue. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Fighting back tears, I continued my performance. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________  英语单项选择1—5 DCDDA  6—10 AABDA  11—15 CCBDB  16—20 BCBDB  21—25 ACDDA阅读理解26—28 BCC  29—32 DDBD  33—36 DBCA  37—40 AADB七选五41—45 DGACF完形填空46—50 AACBD  51—55 BDBDA  56—60 CDDAB语法填空61. throwing 62. successfully 63. which 64. have been fixed 65. built 66. up 67. equipment 68. to observe 69. more likely 70. the
