“What’s the matter, Jenny?” asked her sister, Mary.
“Mary,” said Jenny, “I’m in double trouble. I can’t go to the beach with my classmates, and I’ve broken my promise to Mom. I promised I’d stay within my budget (预算) this month.”
For a few minutes, the two girls just sat and thought. Then Mary grabbed Jenny’s arm.
“Jenny, I won’t give you the money, but I will help you. Just listen for a minute.”
At first, Jenny wasn’t interested since Mary wasn’t willing to give her the money she needed. However, after Mary explained her plan, Jenny began to like it.

“Mary, you are a lifesaver,” Jenny hugged Mary’s neck.
The two sisters began to work together. After several hours, they agreed on how Jenny should use her money. Mary took their figures and made a graph (表格) for Jenny.
Holding up the graph, Mary said, “Now you can see where your money should go each month.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters is based on the power of friendship. It is a program which provides friendship and fun by matching vulnerable young people (ages 7-17) with a volunteer adult who can be both a role model and a supportive friend.
Volunteer tutors come from all walks of life — married, single, with or without children. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are not replacement parents or social workers. They are tutors: someone to trust, to have fun with, to talk and go to when needed.
A Big Sister and Little Sister will generally spend between one and four hours together three or four times each month for at least twelve months. They enjoy simple activities such as a picnic at a park, cooking, doing sports or going to a football match. These activities improve the friendship and help the young person develop self-respect, confidence and life direction.
Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations can be found throughout the world. It is the largest and most well-known provider of tutor services internationally and has been operating for 25 years.
Emily and Sarah have been matched since 2008. Emily is a 15-year-old girl who has experienced some difficulties being accepted by her schoolmates at school. “I was pretty sure there was something wrong with me.”
Emily’s mum came across Big Brothers Big Sisters and thought it would be of benefit to Emily by “providing different feedback about herself other than just depending on schoolmates to measure (测量) her self-worth.”
Sarah wanted to get involved (使参与) in a volunteer program. “I googled it and found out how to be a part of it. I thought it would be fun for me to get involved in making time to do something because sometimes it is all work and no play.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters has been of great benefit and enjoyment to both Emily and Sarah. They love and look forward to their time together and the partnership has certainly helped Emily be more comfortable in being the wonderful and happy girl she is!

“Tumbling (翻跟头) time!” I called out. My group of 45 lined up before the sea of blue mats(垫子). Megan stepped quietly into the back of the line. The other children had 46 the tumbling moves months ago. But Megan was still working on them. It simply took her a little longer to learn them.
One day before class, Megan’s father asked to talk to me. “I’m 47 taking Megan out of class,” he said. “Why?” I asked. He said, “She isn’t catching on like the other kids are. I don’t want her to hold them back.” I could see his 48 expression as he said this. Megan’s eyes were looking down as if she wanted to disappear.
“I think you’re making a 49 ,” I said. “Megan needs this class, possibly more than the other children need it. I, myself, didn’t start out as a seven-time national champion. I started out as an eight-year-old girl, just like Megan. When I look at Megan, I 50 myself. She works hard.”
“Sir, your daughter 51 never win a competition or even compete, but I promise you that if she keeps trying and believing in herself, her self-respect will be more 52 than any gold medal. I believe in Megan. I believe that she can 53 anything she sets out to do.”
54 I said these words, Megan looked up at me. Her eyes were filled with tears, and she was smiling like a bud(花蕾) flowering into bloom. Her father hugged me and said in a very low voice, “Thank you. Thank you so much.” He turned to Megan and said, “Honey, it’s time for your class.”
Megan 55 did learn many skills in her own time. More importantly, she never again stood at the 56 of the line. From that day forward, whenever I asked the children to line up for tumbling, Megan ran to stand in the front.

Imagine that you are the first person ever to see Hawaii. What would be the first thing you would set foot on?
The beach, naturally. There are hundreds of miles of beaches on the twenty islands of Hawaii. These islands cover 1,600 miles and are about 2,300 miles west of California. Most of them are covered with fine white sand. They are thought to be among the finest beaches in the world.
Another wonderful thing about the beaches of Hawaii is the water temperature. The year-round average (平均)temperature of the water at the famous Waikiki Beach is 23℃!
The same is true of air temperature. In fact, there are no real seasons in Hawaii. There is a difference of only two or three degrees between the hottest day of summer and the coldest day of winter. That’s why the Hawaiians don’t have a word for weather in their language.
Perhaps the nicest thing about Hawaiian beaches are the waves. The earliest settlers (定居者) in Hawaii, the Polynesians, quickly learned how much fun it was to ride the waves. They developed a sport which is now very popular on the islands called body surfing. You go out into the ocean, wait for a big wave to come towards you, jump on it, and ride it all the way to the beach.
Now imagine once again that you are the first person ever to set foot in Hawaii. What do you think would be the second beautiful thing you would notice?
Would it be those strange triangles (三角形状物) rising out of the water hundreds and hundreds of meters high? What are those beautiful things? They are volcanoes (火山), of course. These volcanoes are not just a part of the islands. They made the islands at first. Because of them the islands are still growing.
The most famous volcano on Hawaii is Mauna Loa. It is the world’s most active volcano. It has been erupting (喷发) for thousands of years. Even when it isn’t erupting, smoke comes out of the earth from a thousand little holes.
In 1950 Mauna Loa erupted for twenty-three days. That erupting produced the greatest amount of lava (熔岩) in modern history. In 1960 it erupted again. That time it added a kilometer of beach to the island. Because Mauna Loa has erupted so often, it has become the biggest (but not the tallest) mountain in the world.
These volcanoes could be dangerous to the population of Hawaii. In fact, Hilo, the second largest city in Hawaii, is built just under Mauna Loa. The volcano could erupt at any time. Most people believe that it will erupt sometime in the next twenty-five years. But the people of Hilo do not seem worried. They live with the danger as part of their lives.
57. According to the passage, what are the two most beautiful things in Hawaii?
A. Waves and cities. B. Beaches and language.
C. Volcanoes and beaches. D. Volcanoes and people.
58. Which is NOT the reason why the Hawaiians don’t have a word for weather in their language?
A. There are no real seasons in Hawaii.
B. The temperature of the water at one of the beaches is always 23℃.
C. The Hawaiians feel almost the same in the hottest day and coldest day.
D. There is not much difference in air temperature all the year round in Hawaii.
59. What should be the meaning of “body surfing”?
A. Riding waves. B. Body-building.
C. Sea bathing. D. Jumping into the sea.
60. It can be inferred that _________ according to the passage.
A. volcanoes are more active because the area of the island is enlarging
B. the visitors to Hawaii can probably see more than one active volcano
C. Mauna Loa is the tallest mountain in the world because it has erupted so often
D. people in Hilo are sure that more visitors will come because of volcanoes
