(一)The first AI-driven (人工智能驾驶的) bus went on a road test in Shenzhen on December 2nd last year. So the unmanned (无人驾驶的) car is no longer a far dream.
Most people are excited about AI-driven cars. AI could be a “better driver” than humans as its reaction (反应) time is much shorter than humans’. Also, AI never gets tired and there is no fear of it driving under the influence (影响). Besides, when two humans drive too close on a road and one has to slow down to avoid (避免) an accident, both would expect the other to do so, and the problem could be serious because they cannot talk to each other. However, that problem will not happen to two AI-driven cars because they could “talk” through the cloud and decide which one should slow down.
But some people are worried. The test in Shenzhen was done on a special road. There are more uncertain things on real roads, such as being driven fast by some bad people. And the biggest problem for AI is not about learning to remember road signs, but about whether it can take instinctive (本能的) action in sudden and unexpected situations (情况). Also many cases of people taking control of the computers which are fixed in unmanned cars have been reported. This could be very dangerous.
All in all, AI-driven cars will keep improving and all the possible problems will be solved (解决) before they are widely used. We will meet them soon in the future.

(二)In recent years, a number of Chinese technological innovations(创新) have been making waves around the world. Among them, three stand out. They have made our daily lives more convenient.
High-speed trains
China created its first high-speed railway line in 2008. Since then, the number of passenger trips has grown by over 30 percent every year. By 2016, more than 5 billion trips had been taken China’s bullet trains(高铁), according to Xinhua News Agency.
China is currently working on the next-generation(下一代) bullet trains that will have a top speed of 400 kilometers per hour. By 2020, one-fifth of the country’s 150,000 km railway network had been used by high-speed trains. This network linked more than 80 percent of major cities across China, said Xinhua.
Mobile payment
Mobile payment is turning China into a “cashless society” led by third-party payment companies like Alipay. For example, instead of paying by cash, customers now pay for goods by typing a short password into Alipay app on their mobile devices.
Users can also pay their bills through Alipay, such as their water and electricity bills. Alipay also supports cross-border(跨境的) online and in-store payment, which allows users to buy things on international websites and apps.
Online shopping
With around 751 million internet users. China has long been the world’s largest and fastest-growing online shopping market.
Thanks to lower costs and fewer licensing requirements(执照要求), it’s easier sellers to open an online shop in China than: brick-and-mortar shop(实体店)。
It also helped to create jobs. In 2016, online shopping created more than 20 million jobs in rural areas, with over 8. 1 million running their own online shops, said Xinhua.

(三)It was a very foggy day in London. Mr. Smith had arrived from Edinburgh to go to a very important meeting, but no buses or taxis were running because the drivers were not able to see more than a yard in front of them. It was still early for his meeting, so he thought that he would walk to the office. But he saw that nobody was even trying to walk anywhere.
While he was standing there, saying unhappy things about the fog, and thinking that he would have to telephone to the office and say that he was not able to come, a young man came up to him and said, “Sir, if you want to go somewhere, I can guide you.”
Mr. Smith was very surprised and could hardly believe his ears. He asked, “How can you find the way when there is thick fog everywhere?”
“Don’t worry, sir,” answered the young man. “Believe me.” So Mr Smith told the young man where he wanted to go, and they started. They walked quite fast, turning corners and crossing roads in different places.
At last, Mr. Smith thought, “Perhaps this man is foolish, he would show me a wrong place.” But a minute later, the young man stopped and said, “Here is the place, sir.” Mr. Smith was surprised to find that he had really reached the office. When the man woke up, he could not find his caps. “Where are my caps?” he cried and looked up. And what did he see? He saw many monkeys in the trees, and each had a cap on its head. “Give back my cap!” the man cried. But the monkeys did not understand him. They only laughed and played. The man got so angry that he took off his own cap and threw it away while crying, “If you want all my caps, you may take this cap, too.”

(五)One year there was a terrible flood in the countryside. For a week it rained every day. The river rose and burst its banks (冲垮河岸). The whole countryside was flooded.
Most of the people escaped from the flood in boats. One old man, however, didn’t want to go with them. He sat on the roof of his house and waited for the water to go down.
He was very religious(信宗教的). “I shall stay here,” he said. “God will save me.”
The rain continued. The floodwater rose higher and higher. Soon the water reached the roof of the man’s house. Two men rowed a boat up to the man’s house, trying to save him. “Come with us,” they said. “The water is still rising. You’ll drown(淹死).” The old man shook his head. “No,” he said. “God will save me.” Sadly, the men rowed away. They thought the old man was crazy, but there was nothing they could do. Soon the water covered the roof of the old man’s house.
A helicopter(直升机)arrived and the pilot put down a rope. “Climb up,” he shouted to the old man. “The water is still rising. You’ll drown.” But the old man still didn’t want to leave his house. “God will save me,” he cried, and the helicopter flew away.
The next day the old man drowned in the rising water. He went to heaven(天堂).
God was waiting at the door, and the old man was very angry with him. “I believe in you,” the old man shouted. “I told everyone you would save me. And what happened? You let me drown.”

(六)Hippopotamuses(河马) or “hippos”, live both in the water and on land. Most photographs of these large African animals show them in rivers and lakes. That’s because they spend the daytime in the water, keeping cool in the hot African sun. Hippos sleep in the water, and baby hippos are born there.
But when the sun goes down, hippos come out of the water for food. They eat grass. During the night, they can walk as far as 10 kilometers to get enough grass. An adult hippo can eat over 50 kilograms of it in one night!
Hippos are dangerous animals, both on land and in the water. They fight with lions on land, and with the crocodiles that share their rivers and lakes. Male hippos often fight each other to see which one will dominate(控制) an area of river. Female hippos will fight to protect their young.
Hippos can attack people. They may look like big, slow animals, but they can run fast — about 30 kilometers an hour. That’s faster than a person can run. Hippos will also attack boats that come too close to them.
Looking at photographs of hippos, it’s easy to think they are funny, friendly animals. But in fact, they are deadly!

(2022秋·上海杨浦·七年级统考期末)Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
My 18-month-old son, Adam, called from the front door, “Look! Mama! Dog!” I stopped what I was doing and looked out. Brandy, our next-door neighbour’s 11-year-old dog appeared there again. “Go away!” I said to the dog and brushed the dog hair off Adam’s T-shirt.
Brandy’s owner died about a month ago. The family emptied the house and moved away, but they left the old Brandy behind. For weeks, she walked around the neighbourhood, living on food thrown away by the people.
Brandy went away, and I stayed with Adam. Then the phone rang. I went inside to answer the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I was so nervous(焦虑的)that I called the police. At last we found my son in the woods, and he was just inches away from the cliff (悬崖). Brandy was beside him, leaning against him to keep him away from the cliff. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!
I thanked the police and brought Adam back to our house. Brandy followed us. But she hesitated(犹豫)a moment on our doorstep. It seemed that she remembered the time I’d driven her away.
“Come on, girl,” I said. “This is your home now.” Brandy came in, and once she saw she was welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. She had done a great thing, and I wondered if she knew it.

An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside a river. They were quarrelling who was better.
“Look at me,” said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree with my trunk.”
“Ah! But your skin is not so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile. “No knife or tooth can cut through it.”
Just as they were talking, a lion happened to pass.
“My dear friends!” said the lion, going up to them, “Let me know why you were quarrelling.”
“Would you please tell us who is better?” cried both at once.
“Certainly,” said the lion, pointing across the river. “Do you see the metal hat on that wall? Go and get it, and bring it to me, and then I can tell you.”
When hearing this, they started off. The crocodile was used to the water. He reached the other side of the river first, and soon stood beside the wall. There he waited till the elephant arrived. When he saw the crocodile had no way of reaching the hat, the elephant raised his long trunk and took it down easily.
They then made their way together back again across the river. When the elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile, he carelessly dropped the hat. The metal hat quickly fell to the river bottom. The crocodile dived down, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned and the crocodile put the metal hat at the lion’s feet. The lion took it up and turned to the elephant, then said, “Because of your size and trunk, you reached the hat on the wall, but lost it. You couldn’t get it back.” “And you,” said the lion to the crocodile, “Although you couldn’t reach the hat, you could swim and save it. You are both wise in some ways.”

(四)(2020春·上海奉贤·七年级统考期末)Answer the questions(根据以下内容回答问题)
My name is Amy. Although I am a mother of three children who are in the middle school, I still remember some experiences (经历) about my childhood. Sometimes I talk with my children about them after supper. The following is one of my experiences.
When I was about 12 years old, I really wanted a new bike! I told my parents my birthday wish, but I knew there was little hope because my family could hardly afford (负担得起) it.
On my birthday my parents told me they had my gift outside in the back yard (院子). I rushed out to the yard. There was my bike, but it wasn’t the bike that I thought it would be. This one was pink, old and worn with age. I felt so disappointed! I thought I hurt my parents’ feelings because I was sure they could see the disappointment on my face. I got on the old bike and rode it, feeling bad that I had made my parents feel this way. So I put on a smile, rode as fast as I could and didn’t look back.
As time went by, I began to understand that my parents gave me something much more than just a rusty (生锈的) old bike. They gave me a life lesson (感悟) about love. I like to remember this story because giving a gift is not about money. It’s about how much love you can feel from it. Remember this: a gift that costs $2 isn’t any less valuable (有价值的) than one that costs $100.
1.How many children does the writer have?

2.What did the writer want on her birthday when she was about 12?

3.Did the writer get the birthday gift that she really wanted?

5.Why did the writer put on a smile when she rode the old bike?
