When Jeromiewhalen’s brother finished the Appalachian Trail, he had no idea that his adventure wasn’t quite over. One of the friends he’d made along the way had recently turned 83. In order to celebrate his birthday, he invited the man over. As luck would have it, this lively 83-year old man was none other than famous long distance walker, better known as Nimblewill Nomad! Known as a continuous hiker, Nimblewill first went off into the world of hiking over 25 years ago after retiring(退休) from his job as an eye doctor. Since then, Nimblewill has been able to find peace and go on his many travels alone around the country.
Over the course of his 25 years of hiking, Nimblewill has made many friends and has had his fair share of adventures, some of which has appeared in several of his books. But one of the most famous hikes of his life happened in November 2021.
Although he’s no stranger to the Appalachian Trail, having completed it in 1998, doing it again at 83 was nothing short of a challenge. In fact, it was a record- breaking goal! Once he finished, he would become the oldest person to hike the 2, 193- mile trail.
Although he knew the difficulties he would face, Nimblewill happily took on the challenge. Each day he would record his trip and interesting things that had happened on his blog. He dealt with bad weather, bears, mosquitos(蚊子), and physical pain, but in the end, he completed the journey after 261 days.
At the moment, Nimblewill doesn’t have any plans for when or where he’ll be hiking next, but that doesn’t mean he’s done. Running is one of the most popular sports in the UK. But for many runners, the real reason we head out to beat the roads until our legs hurt is more intangible (无形的) than weight loss or fitness.
Many runners become interested in times. They try to break the 40-minute barrier for the 10K, or run under four hours for the marathon. Yet, really, these times are almost meaningless. And as soon as they are achieved, another target is thrown out almost immediately.
The times are only the carrots we put in front of ourselves. But why do we put them there in the first place? Nobody ever gives a wise answer. Deep down, we all know the answer. Running brings us joy. Watch small children when they are excited, at play, and mostly they can’t stop running.
As we run, we begin to sense that childish joy, which is born to live a wilder existence. As we run, the layers of responsibility and identity we have gathered in our lives, father, mother, lawyer, teacher, all fall away, leaving us with the raw human being.
If we push on, running harder, deeper into the loneliness, further away from the world and the structure of our lives, we begin to feel strangely excited, separated yet at the same time connected, to ourselves. With nothing but our own two legs moving us, we begin to get a sense of who, or what, we really are. After a long run, everything seems right in the world. Everything is at peace. To experience this is a powerful feeling, strong enough to have us coming back, again and again, for more.
    8. Why does the author think setting time goals is almost meaningless?
A Those time goals are used to exchange carrots.
    B. Those time goals can’t be achieved without efforts.
    C. People will be never satisfied with the easily achieved time goals.
    D. There will always be a new time goal once the former one is achieved.
    9. What’s the author’s attitude towards running?
    A Positive. B. Passive. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
    10. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Breaking records. B. Running for the marathon.
    C. Feeling lonely after running. D. Feeling peaceful after a long run.
    11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Running to Be the Real You B. Running to Lose Weight
    C. Running to Become an Adult D. Running to Achieve Success
    D
The human population of Sri Lanka is now believed to be over 20 million. As a result, large areas of trees are being turned into farmland, highways are being built, and elephants are being driven out of their habitats. This change causes turmoil, resulting in an increased number of uncontrollable events between elephants and humans.
The good news is that there is one place called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Udawalawe National Park, the main purpose of which is to protect and care for baby elephants. A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the course of the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves as well as other native plants. Then the elephants are set free to wander in the park.
The ETH spends almost $ 125 ,000 each year on powdered milk for these baby animals. To help pay for food and medical supplies, the ETH has a foster (领养) parent programme. Anyone, even schoolchildren, can help a lot by giving money to care for a baby elephant. Foster parents can name their elephants, take photographs of them, and even help send them back into the wild.
Now visitors are not encouraged to get close to the elephants. The goal of the ETH is for the elephants to return to the wild in the end. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be sent back into its natural habitat. This programme helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
    12. What does the underlined word “turmoil” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A. Confusion. B. Disorder. C. Pollution. D. Harmony.
13 What can we learn about the elephants at the ETH?
    A. They mainly live on coconut leaves.
    B. They are fed separately all the time.
    C. They are taken care of by different means.
    D. They don’t get along well with other animals.
    14. What can you do as a foster parent at the ETH?
    A. You can play games with the elephant.
    B. You can give the elephant you care for a name.
    C. You can take the elephant home for better care.
    D. You can visit Udawalawe National Park free of charge.
    15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
    A. The future of the elephants.
    B. The life of the baby elephants.
    C. The process of raising a young elephant.
    D. The requirements for being a foster parent.

Last night came the first snow of the year. The trees put on caps overnight and the little town was blanketed with fresh snow. The children had a snow day off from school. For them, the fall of snow was a magical event. Jack could hardly wait to go outside. His mother handed him a scarf, a hat and mitts and suggested he build a snowman.
Jack dressed, got a bucket and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. He walked into his front yard, happy to hear the snow crunch under his feet. He first packed some snow and made a very small ball. Then he got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball.
At another window, a little girl flattened her nose against the cold window, watching Jack play alone. It was his new neighbour Nancy. Nancy asked her mother if she could go outside and play. Her mother agreed. Immediately, Nancy zipped up her coat, tugged (用力拉上) her boots and ran outside to Jack’s yard. She said hello and asked if she could help him finish his snowman. Jack nodded willingly.
“Okay. What can I do?” asked Nancy.
“I built my snowman’s body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for its head.” “But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and one is for the head,” Nancy laughed.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack argued. “I don’t think I need you to help me after all.” He made a small snowball and rolled it away, leaving Nancy alone.
Low in spirits, Nancy thought to herself, “I’m going to make my own.”

    Dear Terry,
You don’t know how hopeless I’m feeling these days because I am not doing well in English. I’m writing to turn to you for help.
You know I have difficulty remembering English words. Can you tell me how to remember new words quickly and effectively so that I can enlarge my vocabulary? Besides, I’m poor at English grammar, which makes me anxious. What can I do to improve my grammar? Could you recommend a good grammar book to me? I would appreciate it if you could do me a favor.
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    【答案】参考范文
Nancy walked back to her own yard. She began to build her own snowman. First she rolled two big balls of snow and put them on top of each other. To make the snowman look beautiful, she decorated it with her hat and scarf. Then she found some sticks and pine cones for snowman’s eyes, mouth and arms. Looking at the beautiful snowman, Nancy overflowed with happiness and achievement. Meanwhile, Jack also finished his snowman. As he stood back to admire his own work, unexpectedly, its head fell off and crashed to the ground! “Oh no! My snowman fell apart!” Jack cried, tears of sadness rolling down his face.
Hearing Jack’s cry, Nancy ran over to his yard. In front of her was a snowman whose head shattered into pieces on the snow. Nancy comforted Jack, “It doesn’t matter. I’ll help you roll a new ball.” Hearing this, Jacked wiped off the tears and his eyes soon lit up. Together, they rolled a new snowball, lifted it up onto the snowman’s body and decorated it again. Finally a new snowman was born! Jack jumped with joy and held Nancy’s hands, saying with a trace of blush, “Thank you for making my day.” Nancy gave him a big grin, “Our snowmen are good neighbors!”
