(2022春·江苏南京·八年级统考期末)I was on the train one afternoon. Our carriage was almost empty, just a few people. At one station, a drunk man suddenly entered the train. He shouted and swung his fists (拳头) at a woman holding a baby. Luckily the baby wasn’t hurt. Then he tried to kick an old woman. Everyone was scared.
I’d been learning aikido (合气道) for the past three years. But I’d never fought in real life. As students of aikido, we are not allowed to start a fight. “Aikido,” my teacher always told us, “is about solving conflict (解决冲突), not starting it.”
I decided that this was my moment. If I didn’t do something fast, somebody might get hurt. So I stood up, ready to fight.
Just then, someone shouted, “Hey!” It was an old man. He was smiling at the drunk man. “What have you been drinking?” he asked.
“I’ve been drinking wine (葡萄酒), but it’s none of your business!” said the drunk man angrily. “Oh, that’s wonderful,” said the old man. Then he told how he loved drinking wine with his wife and eating watermelon.
“I also love watermelon,” said the drunk man.
“And I’m sure you have a wonderful wife, too,” said the old man.
“No,” replied the drunk man. “My wife died,” Then he began to sob (啜泣), “I have no wife, no home, no job. I’m so ashamed of myself.”
“Oh, that is so difficult. Sit down here and tell me about it,” said the old man.

(2022春·江苏南京·八年级统考期末)Delia was a young pianist with a kind, generous nature. Her husband Joe was a young painter who is honest and hardworking. They lived in a small flat after they got married.
Each of them was taking lessons—Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. They were the best teachers, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but... when you love your art, nothing is too much.
And soon the money began to run out and they couldn’t afford the lessons any more. Then one day Delia came home and told Joe that she had met a man. The man’s daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano and he was going to pay her 50 dollars an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’d be much happier if you go on with your lessons.” Delia said that it didn’t matter. She said, “When I’ve earned some money, I’ll start again. When you love your art, nothing is too much.” But Joe decided that he was also going to stop his lessons and paint pictures and try to sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took 200 dollars from his pocket. Delia laughed and asked him where he’d got it from. “A man from Vermont bought one of my paintings. And he wants to buy more!” So the two of them were happy for a while. They didn’t have to worry anymore about finding the money to buy food and pay the bills. They missed their lessons, but that didn’t seem to matter.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was covered in a bandage(绷带). He asked her what had happened and if she was all right. “Oh,” said Delia. “My student, Sally asked me to make some coffee for her. So I did and I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. But she went straight to the medicine shop and got this bandage for me.”
Joe sat down and told Delia to sit down too. “Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?” he asked. She tried not to tell him, but then the tears began. “Oh Joe, I couldn’t get students so I got a job as a waitress in a restaurant. And today I burned my hand with hot water. So I can't work any more. I’m sorry, Joe, but we'll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont,” he said. “I haven’t sold any paintings. I’ve been working in a medicine shop, and today someone came from the restaurant to buy bandages fora woman who’d burned her hand. So when I saw you—well, I guessed.”

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级统考期末)It was a usual morning. After snoozing (瞌睡) twice, I took care of my three cats, and then hurried to complete housework while drinking some coffee. Oh, my dear! I nearly forgot my mid-morning appointment. I raced out!
By the time I finished my appointment, I felt a little hungry. I stopped at Moe’s to order a pie to take home and eat while working.
Since it was a little before noon, there was a line of people. A woman, who I later learned was Marcella, was paying at the register (柜台). She asked the woman behind her in line if she would like a drink and then asked me. We both said no, and must have looked confused (困惑的), because she said, ‘I got you.’ She continued to pay for both of our meals – even though we were strangers.
I asked Marcella why she did this, and she shared that someone once did something similar for her. The person asked that she might pay it forward some day and she was making good on her promise.
Before leaving, she gave me a warm hug (拥抱) and asked me to do an act of kindness for a stranger when I could. I nodded. I arrived home, but instead of working through lunch, I sat and kept thinking of her kindness.
Marcella didn’t need to pay for my lunch. But she did, and it brightened my day. Not because I got to keep my $15, but because she was kind – and did not want to receive anything in return.

(2022春·江苏扬州·八年级统考期末)You may often hear some myths(传言)about animals. For example, one dog year equals about seven human years, chameleons(变色龙)change color to match their environment…Today, let’s talk about birds. It is said that if you touch a baby bird, the parents will completely abandon(抛弃)it. Do you really believe it?
In fact, most birds have a very poor sense of smell, so in most cases they are unable to even notice the smell of humans on baby birds. Not only that, but most types of birds aren’t so quick to abandon their young when they sense danger. Some types will even do their best to protect their young when they are in danger.
Indeed, in very few known cases, parent birds sometimes abandoned their nests from something touching their young, just because they noticed it by sight, not smell. When this happens, the parent birds usually won’t care, other than to be a little more careful than normal. Sometimes, they may temporarily(暂时地)abandon the nest in order to better watch whatever disturbed their nest.
What’s more, in most cases, even if the nest is destroyed by wind or something to that effect, you could create a new one and put all the baby birds back in it, and when the parents came back, they wouldn’t care their baby birds were in a different nest, so long as you put the new nest near where the old one was so they can find it.

(2022春·江苏南通·八年级统考期末)The Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans are the four oceans we learned about in the Geography class. But now we have a new ocean.
On World Ocean Day, which falls on June 8, the National Geographic Society announced it would recognize(承认)the Southern Ocean in Antarctica(南极洲).
Unlike the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans—which are defined by the continents(大陆)around them, the Southern Ocean is instead characterized by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current(南极绕极流). According to National Geographic, the Southern Ocean includes most of the waters surrounding Antarctica out to 60 degrees south latitude(纬度).
“It’s reported that it is the only ocean to touch three others and to completely embrace(包围)a continent rather than being embraced by several continents,” Sylvia Earle, an American biologist and oceanographer, told the Daily Mail.
Those familiar with the Southern Ocean know it’s unlike any other ocean. “Anyone who has been there will find it difficult to explain what’s so amazing about it, but they’ll all agree that the glaciers(冰川)are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more frightening and the landscapes more attractive than anywhere else you can go,” Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist, told National Geographic.
Because of the different environment of the Southern Ocean, it’s home to thousands of unique species(物种). The ocean also has wider ecological effects. For example, humpback whales are known to feed on small shrimp off Antarctica during the summer before moving north to the warmer climates of Central and South America for the colder winter months, according to the Daily Mail.
The National Geographic Society hopes their revised(修订过的)maps will help the public learn more about the area, and it helps to encourage Southern Ocean protection—but its importance is even beyond that.
“We think it’s very important from an educational standpoint to bring attention to the Southern Ocean as a fifth ocean,” Alex Tait, a geographer, told the Post. “So when students learn about parts. of the ocean world, they learn it’s an interconnected ocean, and they learn there are these areas called oceans that are really important, and that there’s a special one in the icy waters around Antarctica.”

(2022春·江苏泰州·八年级统考期末)The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics were more than a sporting event. They were also a showcase(展示) for science and technology. Let’s look at some.
Robot
A lot of different kinds of robots served visitors and athletes during the Olympics. Some machines were used to keep the social distance because of COVID-19. Robots could also transport equipment, clean floors, prepare and carry food to limit human-to-human contact. For example, robots can make and serve alcoholic drinks and coffee for athletes.

The National Speed Skating Oval is said to have “the fastest ice” because 12 new Olympic records and one world record were set there, including Chinese speed skater Gao Tingyu’s Olympic record of 34.32 seconds in the men’s 500 meters. The secret is a new ice-making technology. Liquid carbon dioxide(液态二氧化碳) is put under the ice to keep temperature changes on the ice surface within half a degree. That keeps the ice flat and smooth. Flat and smooth ice is easier to skate on.
High-speed camera
During the speed skating race, athletes can reach speeds of up to 18 meters per second. To catch every exciting moment of the competition, Lie Bao was used for the event. Lie Bao can record speeds of up to 25 meters per second. It closely tracks(跟踪) the athletes’ movements and captures wonderful scenes during speed skating.

My mom’s life was a busy one. Raising four kids on her own was a full time job in itself, but she also worked outside the home. Surprisingly, she always seemed to find a little bit of extra time for us.
She would take us over to my aunt’s in the evening when she worked as a waitress in a small restaurant. I thought she would pass us over to our aunt and hurry off as soon as we made it through the front gate, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we would sit on the porch(门廊), my mom in her waitress uniform, and we would rock in my aunt’s big wooden swing(秋千) and talk about what happened that day.
“I learned how to add numbers up to the hundreds,” my sister Sandy would say.
“That’s wonderful,” my mom would reply, holding her tight.
“I learned how to write my name!” Larry, my younger brother, would shout.
My mom would get a piece of paper and a pencil out of her purse and hand it to my brother. “Show me how you do it,” she’d ask softly.
“Do you have enough time to hear what I did today?” I’d ask her.
Mom would smile at me and nod. “I’m never too busy for something important like that!”
She gave us the gift of time again and again throughout the years. Later on in her life, when she came to live with us after her retirement(退休), my mom gave the gift of time to my children too. They would run around excitedly, asking their grandma if she would play with them, or read them a story, or go for a walk with them. By then my mom had health problems, but she would always nod and sit down and read to them or tell them stories about when she was a little girl. Those moments were a wonderful gift that my children still talk about and treasure.
In the last few years of her life, I would take her to lunch or sit with her on the porch, and we would talk about the past, the dream of the future, and just enjoy being with each other. My mom would listen as I shared all of my hopes, my fears, and my dreams for my family. I would look at her and ask her if she minded me taking up so much of her free time.
“Nonsense” she’d tell me. Then she’d give me a wink and say, “I’m never too busy to spend time with you. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life.”
I will always remember those wonderful words and the loving heart behind them. It is a gift my mom gave to me for which I will forever be grateful. In this busy world of ours, and in a life filled with challenges, she always had time to share her joy with me.

①Nowadays heavy traffic can happen anywhere. People can get very anxious if they are in heavy traffic. For many years people have tried to invent a car that can fly. If a person is driving a flying car, the heavy traffic would be far below him.
② People around the world hope that in the future, flying cars will be useful for short trips like taxis in or out of cities. These cars could save time in emergencies that happen suddenly and help reach places that can’t be reached by road. They also hope to save the space on the ground. Flying cars won’t use runways, because they are able to take off and land by going straight up and straight down.
③Last September, SkyDrive, a Japanese company, showed off its new flying car SD-03. With a pilot on board, the car was flown around for four minutes.
④Flying cars need strong power to fly in the sky freely like the airplanes. SkyDrive designed the SD-03 powered by batteries (电池). There are eight motors (发动机) lifting it straight off the ground. The design also produces less pollution.
⑤Although the SD-03’s test flight was successful, we may not see flying cars in our daily life anytime soon. ▲ Safety is a big problem. What happens when a motor fails? If a flying car is crossing a city, an accident could hurt not just the people in the car but also people on the ground. That’s why the SD-03 has eight motors — some are backups (备用物). Flying cars are also very expensive. The SD-03, for example, is expected to sell for up to $500,000.
⑥Yet people who believe in flying cars point out that cars and airplanes faced lots of challenges at first, too. Over time, many of their biggest problems were solved. (2022春·江苏盐城·八年级景山中学校考期末)In fear and surprise I hid in the corn, and hoped he would not notice me. He shouted in a voice like thunder and seven other giants appeared. They seemed to be his servants. When he gave the order, they began to cut the corn in the field where I was hiding. As they moved towards me, I moved away. But at last I came to a field where rain had knocked down the corn. There was no longer anywhere for me to hide. I lay down and prepared to die. I could not stop myself thinking of Lilliput. There, I myself had been a giant, an important person who had become famous for helping the people of that small country. Here, it was the opposite. I was like a Lilliputian in Europe, and I began to understand how a very small creature feels.
Suddenly I noticed that one of the giants was very close to me as his huge foot rose over my head. I screamed as loudly as I could. He looked around on the ground and finally saw me. He stared at me for a moment. Then very carefully, he picked me up with finger and thumb and looked at me. I was now twenty meters high in the air, and I hoped he would not decide to throw me to the ground. I did not struggle, and spoke politely to him, although I knew he did not understand any of my languages. He took me to the farmer who soon realized that I was not an animal, but a bright being. He carefully put me in his pocket and took me home to show to his wife. When she saw me, she screamed and jumped back in fear, perhaps thinking I was an insect, but in a little while she became used to me and was very kind to me.

(2022春·江苏无锡·八年级统考期末)Every human being has about 25, 000 genes(基因).Your genes are part of your DNA.They give your body instructions on how to develop. For example, if your genes tell your body to build long, thin fingers, then you’ll have long, thin fingers.
Your genes come from your parents, and they decide everything about you such as your hair color, your eye color, your weight, your height, and so on. Genes are still a bit of a mystery(神秘)to scientists, but they’re learning new things about them all the time.
Do the genes influence(影响)our personalities? People have different ideas. These days, most people agree that the answer to the question is yes. Recent studies have shown that genes especially influence our self-control and our sense of purpose. What is a sense of purpose? If a person really wants to complete something and do well in life, he or she has a sense of purpose. A person who does not care about goals has no sense of purpose.
Although scientists agree that our genes influence our personalities, there is another question. How much do they influence us? Can we control ourselves, or do our genes control us? So far, we still don’t really have an answer.
Genes also influence your health. If a gene has a problem, it’s called a mutated gene. Some mutated genes can cause diseases. That is why if a person has a certain health problem, his or her child is more likely to have that same problem.
As scientists and doctors learn more about genes, they’re also developing a new kind of medicine: gene therapy. Gene therapy means fixing or replacing mutated genes. What is solar energy?
Energy from the sun is called solar energy. It comes in the form of light or heat (热量). Solar energy is what makes you feel hot when you sit in the sunlight. People have used solar energy for thousands of years. Houses are built with windows, so sunlight can get inside and it can also provide heat. The sun’s energy can also be used to heat water and even food. If you have a magnifying glass(放大镜), your parents have probably warned you not to leave it in the sun. Solar energy can make the magnifying glass burn things under it.
How can electricity be produced by the sun’s light?
We can also turn the sun’s light into electricity(电能). This is done with solar panels. Using this technology, we can run a calculator(计算器) and even power cars. Solar panels can store(储存) electricity when the sun is shining. This stored electricity can be used at night or on cloudy days.
