    阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中, 选出最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

    A

Eleven years ago, Ms. Liivand moved to Miami, Florida, where she continued swimming in the ocean. In one training session, she nearly swallowed some plastic that was floating in the sea.

That experience made her think of all the sea animals facing similar pollution every day. She decided to make people more aware of plastic pollution.

She began swimming with a special single swimming fin attached to both of her feet. This rubbery “monofin”单鱼鳍allows her to swim by kicking both of her legs together. “Swimming without using my arms is similar to how dolphins swim,” says Ms. Liivand. She believes that swimming with a monofin sends “a bigger message”.

Ms. Liivand first set the world record for swimming with a monofin in 2020 off the coast of California. In 2021, she set a new Guinness World Record again in Florida. For the last year, Ms. Livand has been getting up at 4 every day, putting on her monofin and going swimming. To help improve her strength, she sometimes even pulled other people in the water.

On May 7 this year, Ms. Liivand broke the record once more, this time swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26.2 miles. The water was rough, and she ran into a few problems, but she didn’t stop. “I got hurt by jellyfish,” she said, “But I kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”

To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a boat and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms. Liivand picked up all the trash she found and put it in the boat. By the end of her marathon, the boat held three bags full of trash.

    11. What inspired Ms. Liivand to swim with a monofin?

    A. Her own experience. B. Her love for dolphins.

    C. The increasing water pollution. D. The sight of painful sea animals.

    12. Which word best describes Ms. Liivand?

    A. Generous. B. Determined. C. Intelligent. D. Tolerant.

    13. What can we infer about Ms. Liivand from the text?

    A. She intended to be a top swimmer.

    B. She wanted to be an absolute perfectionist.

    C. She committed herself to protecting the sea.

    D. She got world recognition for sea protection.

Hannah Huxford met the fry-stealing gull(海鸥)in Bridlington, a coastal town on the Yorkshire coast. Huxford took the well-timed photo on her iPhone in 2012 and it went viral soon after. A decade later, the fry-stealing gull is appearing on billboards, as part of an advertising campaign for Google.

Researchers recently discovered that food may actually become more attractive to gulls when the birds watch humans handling it first, according to a 2020 study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

Because the birds seem to be attracted to food that they’ve watched humans touch, another of the study’s authors, says that it’s even more important to properly throw food waste and snack wrappers(包装纸)in the trash. “Gulls are more likely to approach food that they have seen people drop or put down, so they may associate(联想)areas where people are eating with an easy meal,” Dr. Laura Kelley said.

The scientists approached 74 gulls in coastal towns in Cornwall, tempting(诱惑) them with bags of fried potatoes. Only 19 gulls were curious or hungry enough to linger 逗留, allowing the scientists to place the bag on the ground and go back a short distance away, waiting to see if a gull would approach.

Their experiments showed that gulls were more cautious about approaching a tempting treat if there was a person nearby who was watching them closely. However, the scientists also found that far fewer of the birds than expected showed interest in investigating the food at all when being stared at.

In fact, people may be able to protect their lunches from gulls by avoiding areas where the birds tend to gather and keeping a closer eye on their meals, she added. “Gulls have a bad reputation but, like all animals, they are just trying to survive,” Goumas said. “We can try to ease the conflict we have with them by making changes in our own behavior.”

    1. What did gulls prefer according to the study?
    1. Photos taken by people.
    2. Areas full of food waste.
    3. Snack wrappers in the trash.
    4. Food that visitors are eating.
    1. What can we know about gulls from the scientists’ experiments?
    1. They don’t like the food left over by humans.
    2. They approach the treat when they are hungry.
    3. They are interested in eating food with humans.
    4. They probably won’t eat the treat when being watched.
    1. What’s Goumas’s attitude to the action of the fry-stealing gull?
    1. Critical.     B. Sympathetic.     C. Skeptical.     D. Indifferent.

    C

While most of us are never without our smartphones, robots may also soon become important companions. It certainly seems so based on the recent experiments conducted by researchers in Japan, who developed a wearable soft robot for patients to use during treatments, such as injections and other unpleasant treatments, to reduce their pain and anxiety. On being subjected to a mild heat stimulus刺激, the study participants who wore the robot experienced less pain than in the tests in which they did not wear the robot.

During the campaign to encourage vaccination(疫苗)against COVID-19, public health officials recognized that some people are simply afraid of needles, which resulted in reduced vaccination rates. While the problems of patients’ anxiety and pain during medical procedures have been well studied, there remain a need to test and a solution to help patients.

The soft fur-covered robot the scientists called Reliebo was designed to be attached to the participant’s hand. The researchers tested its effectiveness under various conditions based on the clenching(握拳)of the participant’s hand, while applying the painful stimulus to the other arm that was not being used to hold the robot. The researchers found that holding the robot helped relieve the experience for patients and concluded that the feelings of well-being that can be created by human touch may have also been activated by the robot. “It is well known that interpersonal touch can reduce pain and fear, and we believe that this effect can be achieved even with non-living soft robots,” states Professor Tanaka.

This may be useful when actual human contact is not possible. Future versions of the robot might use AR (Augmented Reality) technologies to help build a connection with the patient or distract them from feeling of pain in various situations.

    1. What is the purpose of the robot?

    A. To assist doctors in injecting accurately.

    B. To help relieve people’s pain from injections.

    C. To improve patients’ physical and mental health.

    D. To assess the effects of getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

    1. How does the robot reduce the pain and anxiety of the patients?

    A. The robot is designed to be attached to the patients’ hand.

    B. The robot’s soft fur gives the patients a feeling of well-being.

    C. The robot’s “interpersonal touch” creates a feeling of well-being.

    D. The robot instructs the researchers to relieve the experience for patients.

    1. What will researchers probably do next?

    A. Develop more robots for medical treatments.

    B. Promote the application of the robot worldwide.

    C. Predict the possible risk of using the medical robot.

    D. Carry out more tests to ensure the safety of the robot.

    1. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

    A. How to Reduce People’s Fear of Injections.

    B. Advanced Technology Helps to Cure Patients.

    C. Wearable Soft Robot Helps Reduce Pain of Patients.

    D. Being Afraid of Needles Reduced Vaccination Rates.

If you are a newcomer to the USA, you may find your name hard for the local people to pronounce. It often brings trouble.   26  . Here are some practical tips for you.

    Make your name easier

When you are applying for a job or attending a presentation, write down the phonetic spelling next to your name. This will make your name much easier. From my own experience, my new friends find this method useful. When they see “Ilincha [ee-lean-ka]”, they can follow the guidance correctly.   27  .

    Act in a right way

If others mispronounce your name, you should never question why they can’t pronounce it correctly.   28  . Instead, you can behave politely by offering the right pronunciation to your friends. Just politely show them how to say your name right. And then, you can even start interesting conversations about the meaning of your name.

    Stay true to yourself

29  . Take me as an example. People often ask me if I have a nickname, or if they could just change my name into something easier. But I hold to my ground. I would be true to myself and say, “No, I would prefer to be called [ee-lean-ka] as this carries great meaning for me.”

30  . We should all love and celebrate each of our names. Therefore, be proud of your name and speak up for yourself.

    A. Be patient and kind

    B. And don’t blame them for the mistake, either

    C. You may wonder how to handle such problems

    D. As a result, they can pronounce my name easily

    E. Hopefully, the tips above will bring you confidence
