A
My grandmother was from a town in Michigan. Summer after summer, I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child. I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in. People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond (关系) with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older. Grandma was always
using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we'd have
tea parties. She'd make beautiful quilts (被子) for each one. I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.
A few years ago, when grandma left this earth, I bid farewell (告别) to a loving
grandmother. How quickly our lives can change! We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier, on her 91st birthday.
I missed her very much. On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low,
something happened to make me feel she was sharing that special day with me. I was arranging some colorfully pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow (枕头). It was small and hard. I move it to the seam (接缝) that I carefully
opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find
something that had been a part of her! Instead of thinking that it had fallen off her finger, I pictured her sewing (缝) it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my
bedspread that day. I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I've collected over the
years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to show to me. What a precious (宝 贵的) memory of a very special lady who somehow, I knew, was laughing in delight at
sewing her thimble inside my pillow! I made some tea, using my best china, as Grandma always did, and enjoyed my tea and Grandma' s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!

This month, Germany's transport minister, Alexander Dobrindt, proposed the first set of rules for autonomous vehicles (自动驾驶车辆). They would define the driver's role in such
cars and govern how such cars perform in crashes where lives might be lost.
The proposal attempts to deal with what some call the 揹eath valley? of autonomous vehicles: the grey area between semi-autonomous and fully driverless cars that could delay the driverless future.
Dobrindt wants three things: that a car always chooses property (财产) damage over
personal injury; that it never distinguishes between humans based on age or race; and that if a human removes his/her hands from the driving wheel—to check email, say—the car's maker is
responsible if there is a crash.
揟he change to the road traffic law will permit fully automatic driving,? says Dobrindt. It
第 7 页 共 12 页
will put fully driverless cars on an equal legal footing to human drivers, he says.
Who is responsible for the operation of such vehicles is not clear among car makers, consumers and lawyers. 揟he liability (责任) issue is the biggest one of them all,? says Natasha
Merat at the University of Leeds, UK.
An assumption behind UK insurance for driverless cars, introduces earlier this year, insists that a human 揵e watchful and monitoring the road? at every moment.
But that is not what many people have in mind when thinking of driverless cars. 揥hen
you say 慸riverless cars?, people expect driverless cars.? Merat says. 揧ou know-no driver.”
Because of the confusion, Merat thinks some car makers will wait until vehicles can be fully automated without operation.
Driverless cars may end up being a form of public transport rather than vehicles you own,
says Ryan Calo at Stanford University, California. That is happening in the UK and Singapore, where government-provided driverless vehicles are being launched.
That would go down poorly in the US, however. 揟he idea that the government would
take over driverless cars and treat them as a public good would get absolutely nowhere here,? says Calo.
56.What does the phrase 揹eath valley? in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A place where cars often break down.
B. A case where passing a law is impossible.
C. An area where no driving is permitted.
D. A situation where drivers' role is not clear.
57. The proposal put forward by Dobrindt aims to .
A. stop people from breaking traffic rules
B. help promote fully automatic driving
C. protect drivers of all ages and races
D. prevent serious property damage
58. What do consumers think of the operation of driverless cars?
A. It should get the attention of insurance companies.
B. It should be the main concern of law makers.
C. It should not cause deadly traffic accidents.
D. It should involve no human responsibility.
59. Driverless vehicles in public transport see no bright future in .
A. Singapore B. the UK

C. the US D. Germany
60. What could be the best title for passage?
A. Autonomous Driving: Whose Liability?
B. Fully Automatic Cars: A New Breakthrough
C. Autonomous Vehicles: Driver Removed
D. Driverless Cars: Root of Road Accidents

During a visit to the United Arab Emirates, I was invited to speak to college students to learn more about how the country is preparing the next generation for the future. I met with students who were required to present their final projects in a three-minute presentation to members of the ruling family. Now, that is pressure. But learning the art of public speaking is no longer an option to succeed in the 21st century; it is essential.
Educators who I have met across the Middle East, Europe and Asia say that they are
elevating (提升) the art of public speaking to a core requirement along with math and science. Chris Anderson, the curator (负责人) of TED, encourages schools in the United States to make
損resentation literacy? a requirement in elementary schools. There is a wrinkle, however.
According to an article in The Atlantic, some American middle-school and high-school students are calling for the elimination (取消) of mandatory (强制的) in-class presentations.
Their anxiety is real. Psychology professor Matthew Lieberman writes in his book, 揙ur
brains desire for the positive evaluation of others almost to an embarrassing degree.? That's why most of us get anxious about public speaking. Anxiety can turn into full-blown panic
attacks or create lifelong fears.
As an author whose books are used in public speaking classes around the world, I will explain why public speaking skills are more important than ever. Persuasion梠ne person convincing another to change their mind梚s now responsible for 25 percent of Americas total income, according to Deirdre McCloskey at the University of Illinois. The percentage will rise
to 40 percent soon, she assured me. It is a terrible idea to reduce public speaking opportunities
in class at a time when students need the skills it can give them to succeed. Today anyone who is better at presenting their ideas can see a sudden, massive increase in wealth that is unprecedented in human history.
In the age of ideas, public speaking is one of the greatest skills that students need in order
to learn, grow, and inspire the rest of us to dream bigger. If students enjoy the process of building the necessary skill set, they will learn to love public speaking.

A.Public speaking is essential in preparing for the future.
B.Students don't have to choose the course of public speaking.

A.Simple case. B.New idea.
C.Small problem. D.Strong belief.
63.Matthew Lieberman is telling us that ________.
A.we long for the positive judgment terribly
B.good public speaking skills can promote our confidence
C.we feel embarrassed when expecting positive evaluation
D.public speaking can make us feel scared rather than anxious
64.Which of the following is the benefit of public speaking?
A.It can help persuade others to change their mind.

第Ⅱ卷 (满分30分)第四部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
I抦 a 34-year-old man, married, lived in a nice house, and have a successful career as an educational consultant. But my life was not always so great. I had a learning disability from an early age. I went to a special school where I got plenty of extra help. Still, I suffered the rest of my school days in public schools.
My life improved remarkably when I discovered art. The art world gave me a chance to
express myself without words. I went to a workshop and gradually got good at making things with clay(黏土). Here I learned my first important lesson: disabled as I was in language, I
could still be smart and well express myself with clay. And my confidence came along.
I got my next lesson from rock climbing. It was a fun thing but I was scared from the start.
I soon noticed it wasn抰 a talent thing; it was practice. So I did it more. After about five years of climbing, I found myself in Yosemite Valley on a big wall. I learned that if you fall in love with something and do it all the time, you will get better at it.
Later I decided to apply my previous experience to learning how to read and write. Every
day I practiced reading and writing, which I used to avoid as much as
possible. After two hard years, I was literate.
Having gone through the long process with art, rock climbing, and reading and writing,
now I抳e got to a point in my life where I know I am smart enough to dive into an area that is totally unknown, hard, but interesting.
66. What made the author抯 school days difficult? (No more than 5 words)
67. Why did art give the author confidence? (No more than 10 words)
68. What lesson did the author learn from rock climbing? (No more than 15 words)
69. What is the meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 4? (No more than 5 words)
70. How does the author抯 story inspire you to overcome difficulties in life? Put it in your own words. (No more than 20 words)
