Ben Miller is a British actor, as well as a productive writer for children. Here, he shares his favorite books.
King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green
I loved reading when I was little. My parents were both English teachers, and our home was full of books. Dickens was a family favorite. But the book that really fired my imagination was King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green.
Buy King Arthur and His Knight of the Round Table here.
Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith
I’m a fool for a classic, and I’m so glad I finally managed to finish Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. Put simply, it’s the funniest book I’ve ever read, with text by George and illustrations by Weedon.
Buy Diary of a Nobody here.
Exhalation by Ted Chiang
It’s never too late to have your life changed by a book, and it happened to me again recently when I read Ted Chiang’s collection Exhalation. Story of Your Life, one of the best in it, inspired the sci-fi alien visitation classic Arrival. I love that too, but each and every piece in Exhalation is its match in imagination.

The day had started out as usual for Mrs. Ito until the late afternoon, when the news of the destructive tsunami(海啸)waves came over the radio.
At last, 12:30 a.m. came as the radio warning had said and nothing happened. She could hear passing people say the tsunami waves must have missed the islands and they laughed as they were returning to their homes. Mrs. Ito went into her living room and looked down the street. It was calm.
Then, a sudden flash-like lighting lit the sky over Hilo Bay and a deafening explosion broke the night’s silence. The first large wave of the tsunami had burst Hilo’s electric power plant. Suddenly, all the lights in Hilo went out.
Next thing Mrs. Ito heard was a trembling sound. Before she knew it, the wave broke into her house. She was knocked to the floor as her house began to spin and finally tore apart. Desperately, Mrs. Ito grasped for anything to stay above water. Suddenly, something heavy fell on her. The floorboards opened up and she became trapped. She used every bit of strength to struggle out of the boards and managed to squeeze free. Then she blacked out.
When she woke up, she found herself being washed back and forth as the water rose. There were no waves, so she figured she had to be floating over flooded land. Not knowing how to swim, she hung on tight to her tiny temporary raft(木排).
At sunrise, she spotted two boats on the horizon(地平线). She saw in the distance a radio station tower light. She remained at peace and kept her head down. She thought that death was just a matter of time away. She thought the people on the boats hadn’t seen her. Then the boats came closer and closer. Mrs. Ito was seen and saved.
24. What’s people’s reaction to the radio warning according to Paragraph 2?
A. Shocked. B. Anxious. C. Disappointed. D. Relaxed.
25. What can be concluded about this tsunami?
A. It felt like an obedient sheep.
B. It struck the islands as expected.
C. It had astonishing destructive power.
D. It occurred at noon without any warning.
26. What happened to Mrs. Ito during the tsunami?
A. She got stuck in the flooded land for days.
B. She was rescued by people on the boats luckily.
C. She lost her dearest family members in the tsunami.
D. She was struck by a heavy object and lost memories.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Mrs. Ito’s story of surviving the tsunami.
B. The recovery of the islands after the tsunami.
C. The damage caused by a destructive tsunami.
D. The effects of the tsunami on local people’s life.

Have you ever wondered how astronauts clean their clothes in space? You may find the answer surprising—they do not. They wear their clothes until they cannot take the dirt and smell anymore. Then, they throw them away.
NASA wants to change that. This would mean the end to throwing away lots of dirty clothes every year. Up to now, they simply had to put them with other waste in old supply ships to burn up in the atmosphere. NASA is working with Procter & Gamble (P&G), to learn how best to clean astronauts’ clothes in space.
NASA says rocket storage space is small and costly. So, why waste it? The clothes would use a lot of storage space, especially on a three-year Mars mission. There are also the problems of health and comfort.
Space station astronauts exercise two hours every day to fight the effects of weightlessness on their bodies. Leland Melvin, a former NASA astronaut, says their exercise clothing becomes so unpleasant that they use a new set every week, and that while NASA and the other space station partners have researched ways to lengthen wear time with special clothes, that is not a long-term solution(解决办法).
In its first experiment, P&G will send up detergent (洗涤剂) made just for space in December. Scientists will see how the compounds in the detergent react to six months of weightlessness. Next May, they will send stain-removal pens and cloths to the ISS for testing by astronauts. At present, P&G is developing a washer-dryer machine that could operate on the moon or even Mars someday. It would use small amounts of water and detergent. Such a machine could also be useful in dry places here on Earth.
28. What problem in space do NASA and P&G aim to solve?
D. Lack of space B. Lack of comforts.
C. Lack of fund A. Lack of detergents.
29. What can be inferred from what Leland Melvin says?
A. Exercise in space is physically demanding.
B. The cooperation between NASA and P&G is workable.
C. New clothes are of great benefit compared to used clothes.
D. An effective way of lengthening wear time has been found.
30. What will P&G do next year?
A. Send detergent into space.
B. Operate a machine on the moon or even Mars.
C. Send stain-removal pens and cloths to the space station.
D. Send a washer-dryer machine using a little water on the moon.
31. In which section may this text appear?
A. A travel brochure. B. A science paper
C. A recipe book. D. A biography.
D
The “butterfly effect” may be real, which is used to describe seemingly insignificant events that can have unplanned consequences. But in reality “butterfly effect” does exist, taking place right before our eyes, scientists suggest.
According to new research, insects actually carry electrical charges (电荷) which can have big effects on the atmosphere, potentially influencing even the weather. The findings were published Monday in the journal Science.
Before you can understand that, you have to understand how electrical charges in the atmosphere work. The Earth’s atmosphere always carries an electrical charge to a lesser or greater degree, which scientists refer to as the Potential Gradient. Scientists concluded that atmospheric electricity is primarily driven by natural weather events like thunderstorms and shower clouds, though reasons like human pollution also affect it. Researchers, therefore, want to know how electrical charges influence clouds.
To confirm that honeybees carry electrical charges, researchers placed an electrical field monitor near a large group of honeybees near the University of Bristol. They also placed a control monitor in a field where there were no bee groups. The monitor near the bee group picked up an increase in electrical charge while the control monitor detected no such effect, confirming their assumption.
Second, the researchers wanted to calculate the insects’ electrical effects on the atmosphere compared to the electrical influences of natural weather events like clouds and dust storms. They calculated the electrical charge of three different types of insect groups. Most surprisingly, insects’ electrical charges can have just as significant an influence on atmospheric electricity as natural weather events.
The knowledge that insects influence the atmosphere’s electricity has bigger inspiration for science. PG affects the “movement of aerosols (气溶胶) in the atmosphere, and leads to charging of droplets in some clouds,” according to Hunting. Insect groups won’t drive weather events like thunderstorms, but they could influence the movement of these atmospheric.
32. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The background of the research.
B. The publication of journal Science.
C. The work of electrical charges in atmosphere.
D. The electrical effects of insects on atmosphere.
33. How did researchers conduct the process of experiments?
A. By using statistics. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By introducing concepts. D. By making comparisons.
34. Which has the least electrical effects on the atmosphere’s electricity?
A. Human pollution. B. Shower clouds.
C. The thunderstorms. D. The insect groups.
35. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Insect Groups Driving Thunderstorms.
B. Natural Weather Events Leading to Charging of Droplets.
C. Small Insects Making a Big Difference to the Atmosphere.
D. Researchers Controlling Experiment between Insects and Organisms.
