Beyond the famous historic cities and world-famous sights, you’ll find the real Italy tucked away. Meet some of Italy’s lesser-known regions and get to know the real Italy.
Cilento
Located just south of Naples, the walking paths and coastal roads of Cilento will reward you with inspiring sea views, highland backdrops and beautiful harbour(港口)towns. The waterside restaurants offer the best buffalo mozzarella, a type of cheese, in Italy! You’ll find many hundred-year-old people living here thanks to their healthy diet.
Umbria
Landlocked Umbria is a truly corner of Italy and is a feast for the senses with its muse-ums,galleries, Romanesque churches and cathedrals. Wander through the narrow streets of historic Perugia, take a guided tour of the impressive Etruscan caves at Orvieto, or admire the frescoes(湿壁画) of the Basilica di San Francesco and the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi.
Piedmont
While the region is full of green-gold vineyard (葡萄园), Piedmont is also a hotbed of culinary excellence, with its focus on local production and food origin. The small town of Bra and its parish, Pollenzo, is the birthplace of the international Slow Food movement, and home to the University of Gastronomic Sciences.
Basilicata
Basilicata is filled with historic hilltop towns that look out across the mountainous landscapes of the Lucanian Dolomites. As a region that remains relatively unexplored, it is a fascinating corner off the beaten path that is attractive for its historical presence. It’s home to neighbourhoods of prehistoric houses believed by many to be the place where Italy’s first settlers arrived over 9,000 years ago.

Scientists have recently discovered that animals that live in groups, such as elephants, foxes, and wolves, are more likely to follow rules. If they don’t, and each does its own thing, the group will probably break apart. Group members would be forced to live alone, and would have a harder time hunting and raising their young. That’s probably why a traveling wolf pack was seen stopping and waiting for its limping leader to catch up. Similar social ties are believed to be responsible for an elephant saving her friend from drowning.
Sometimes, though, animals try their best to do what’s right, even when there’s nothing in it for them. Nobody knows exactly why. “It might simply feel good to be kind, just as it does for humans.” says Bekoff. If your friend wasn’t nice to you, what would you do? Maybe you would just walk away. That’s exactly what a wild red fox did when she was playing boxing with another fox.
Toby was a generous cat. For ten years, the kind kitty shared his food with a spaniel named Katie. After supper, owner Linda Gustafson always divided the food. She’d drop some in Katie’s bowl on the floor and some in Toby’s dish on the kitchen counter. Gustafson kept the cat’s dish up high to keep Katie from stealing Toby’s treats. As it turned out, Katie didn’t need to steal; she only had to beg. Every night, the spaniel ate her food in a few seconds. Then she’d sit and stare at the cat and every night, Toby would be nice. Using his paw, he’d get several pieces of tasty food down to the waiting dog. Apparently, Katie appreciated it, because whenever she was curled up in her beanbag bed and the cat walked over, she would give up her nice, warm spot. “Toby would then lie down in the center of the beanbag.” says Gustafson, “and Katie would lie on the floor.”
4.The reason why some animals prefer to live in groups lies in that ________.
A.they have to follow natural rules B.they are afraid of staying alone
C.they cannot find food by themselves D.living alone would make their lives harder
5.According to Bekoff, animals try their best to do what’s right because ________.
A.it feels good to be kind B.animals are friendly by nature
C.they have learned to do so for a long time D.they want their owners to like them
6.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _________.
A.Linda always lets the animals eat together B.Katie sometimes gets her food by stealing
C.Toby is generous but Katie isn’t D.Katie and Toby help each other
7.The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A.we should protect animals and live with them peacefully
B.animals, like humans, can be connected by friendly social ties.
C.rules only exist in human societies and not in animal societies
D.animals will make the world more beautiful and peaceful
C
What do the following animals have in common? Pandas, rhinoceros, Mexican burrowing snakes, pink pigeons and small tooth sawfish.
They are all endangered animals! Animals become endangered for a variety of reasons. Sadly, humans are behind every one of them!
For centuries, humans have hunted elephants for their tusks, and killed tigers for their beautiful fur, caught fish for food. While we still have elephants, tigers, and fish in the wild, we cannot say the same about many others that have simply died out!
Year 1505 was a dreadful turning point in the natural history of the island of Mauritius — European sailors discovered this beautiful island in the Indian Ocean and brought dogs, pigs, monkeys with them. The arrival of humans and those introduced animal species were bad news for dodo birds. About 50 pounds and flightless, dodo birds did not have any natural enemies until then. They picked fruit fallen from trees and built their nests on the ground. Shortly after humans set foot on Mauritius, however, dodo birds realized that they were in big trouble — men killed them for their meat, and those introduced animal species destroyed their nests and ate their eggs. The effects of excessive hunting and foreign species drove dodo birds to first become much fewer and then die out. The last dodo bird was killed in 1681.
Humans and animals have always competed for land and other natural resources. We clear an area of a forest for farming. We cut down trees and use wood to build beautiful houses. We build reservoirs to make sure that we have enough water to use. At the same time that we are trying to make our life comfortable, we destroy the habitats of wild animals.
More than once we have seen on television that rescue workers are trying their best to save seabirds in spilled oil. More than once we have heard about how emissions of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳的排放) and other gases have raised the earth's temperature and caused global warming. Pollution has a serious and long lasting effect. If we choose to do nothing and continue to pollute our planet Earth, our next generations will have to face an Earth without birds singing and beasts roaring.
8.Which of the following are NOT endangered animals?
A.Pandas. B.Rhinoceros. C.Pink pigeons. D.Dodo birds.
9.What does the underlined word “dreadful” (in Paragraph 4) mean?
A.Surprising. B.Exciting. C.Awful. D.Quick.
10.Paragraph 5 mainly talks about _______.
A.how excessive hunting led to endangerment of animals
B.when foreign species entered the island of Mauritius
C.the human activities caused the loss of habitats of animals
D.pollution played a main role in the worsening of the environment
11.What is the best title for the passage?
A.What makes the animals in danger B.How to save the endangered animals
C.Pollution and animals D.Don't hunt for animals
D
As I stood in line waiting to check out at my favorite store, I studied the customer in front of me. She was in her early twenties, but looked as if life had beaten her down many times. Everything about her spelled hardship.
The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat, along with some inexpensive items. Carefully placed in a far corner sat a little doll, some animal stickers, and a 50%-off pretty dress.
When it was her turn and the store employee finally calculated everything and told her the cost, her face paled. She opened her purse and began counting small bills and change. Obviously she didn’t have enough. She removed much-needed goods while the cashier patiently put them away with a pleasant smile.
The child’s items remained in the cart, however. The man right behind me shouted loudly, and the young woman’s cheeks reddened with embarrassment. I wanted to pay for her groceries, but I knew that would hut her.
Instead, I turned around and said to the man in a low voice, “Be grateful you’ve never had to do that!” And then, as she tried to decide what other necessity she could return, I said, “Take your time. I’m in no hurry.”
The woman finally reduced her groceries, paid and moved down to bag them. When my turn came, I moved forward and placed several items with the pile of items the woman had taken out and whispered “ Separate bags, same bill please.” The cashier nodded and quickly complied. Then she “accidentally” rolled several oranges hard enough so that they flew past the lady and onto the floor. As the woman kindly ran to pick up the runaway fruit, I quickly put the two extra bags into her cart, along with a twenty-dollar bill.
That night, as I sat with my husband, my thoughts went to the Lady who I hoped was enjoying a hearty meal with her little girl, and I hoped silently that her life would take an easier turn soon.
12.How did the woman in front impress the author?
A.She was interested in spelling words. B.She had experienced hardship in life.
C.She enjoyed buying things for her kids. D.She had just moved into the neighborhood.
13.What did the cashier do to help the author?
A.She attracted the lady’s attention with some oranges.
B.She packed some free fruit in a bag for the woman.
C.She blamed the man who had shouted at the woman.
D.She managed to get a job appointment for the woman.
14.What does the underlined word “ complied” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Refused B.Obeyed C.Advised. D.Paid.
15.Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Humorous. B.Strict. C.Honest. D.Considerate.

书面表达
Dear Tom,
Learning that you are anxious about high school life, I am writing to give you some advice on how to get used to it.
First, I think it would be a good idea to join school clubs which helps you to keep a balance between your study and life, and promote your study efficiency. Another thing I would suggest is that you are supposed to make friends with those who share your interests, such as collecting model cars or playing an unusual instrument. In addition, why not take part in more outdoor sports activities. By doing this, you will feel much better.
I hope you’ll benefit from my advice, and wish you’ll adapt to high school life as soon as possible!
Yours,
Li Hua
