Fengguo Temple ＆ The Grandmaster（《一代宗师》）

“How beautiful the jasmine （茉莉花）is！ A sweet smell covers the budding twigs. So fragrant, so white, admired by all lips. ” The famed Chinese folk song Jasmine Flower has reached a global audience with its beautiful melody and lyrics. Equally popular is the traditionally made Jasmine tea, whose elegant fragrance and mellow taste fascinate countless tea drinkers.
Chen Chengzhong has a big say in the production of Jasmine tea as he is a practitioner of Fuzhou Jasmine tea scenting techniques. The 72-year-old tea maker started his career early in his teenage years, when he became an apprentice in a state-owned tea factory.
Jasmine tea is a kind of tea scented （带有某种香味）with the fragrance of jasmine blossoms and typically has green tea as its base. The natural scenting process consumes fresh jasmine blossoms, picked during the daytime when the buds are closed, Chen said. And the green tea leaves from the spring harvest are stored until the most fragrant jasmine blossoms in late summer.
The hot and humid climate and the red soil in East China's Fujian province provide favorable conditions for jasmine and tea' plants to thrive, becoming the high-quality ingredients that are needed for Jasmine tea. “Our jasmine flowers and tea leaves are all sourced from Fujian in large quantities, despite the fact that they are pricier than those from other origins, ” Chen said.
When the fresh jasmine flowers are harvested, they are mixed with layers of tea leaves. Workers stir （搅拌） the tea leaves and flowers overnight， allowing the leaves to absorb the fragrant scent of the jasmine blossoms.
In the morning, the flowers are sorted, the leaves are dried, and the process is repeated. More repetition makes for a more robust jasmine flavor, and it takes at least nine scenting processes to produce Jasmine tea of a superb grade.
Having been appointed as the representative practitioner of Fuzhou Jasmine tea scenting techniques, Chen now focuses more on passing on the scenting techniques, giving lectures to students and apprentices. Chen's son Chen Zheng is motivated to follow in his father's footsteps and move forward with the scenting techniques. “Like my father, I also hope to practice this traditional skill that has profound cultural deposits, and pass it on, ” Chen Zheng said.

From writing Shakespeare-style poetry to making music, ChatGPT has amazed the world since its launch in late 2022 by the US-based company OpenAI. It even passed several law exams in four courses at the University of Minnesota. The AI program can answer questions on a whole host of topics and write essays, stories and any other written texts you can think of. It does this by drawing on information collected from a large corpus (语料库) of text data.
What makes ChatGPT so impressive? As Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI said in an interview with Forbes, “it’s not actually fundamentally new technology that made this (ChatGPT) have a moment.”
According to MIT Technology Review, ChatGPT is based on GPT-3, a large language model. Because texts are more complicated than the meaning of every word combined, language models require a type of neural network (神经网络) that can make sense of texts. One breakthrough behind today’s model is a network called Transformer, which was invented by Google researchers in 2017. The neural network can infer word meanings by tracking where the word appears in a sentence. Transformer can therefore capture the meaning of texts more accurately. The GPT models built by OpenAI combined Transformer with unsupervised (无人指导的) learning, meaning that the models can learn by themselves without being told what to look at. ChatGPT can now generate human-like responses instantly due to the large scale of texts it learned from.
“One of the biggest problems with ChatGPT is that it comes back, very confidently, with falsities,” Michael Wooldridge at the Alan Turing Institute in London, UK, told The Guardian. This means that ChatGPT doesn’t know the truth about the world－it learns information from various resources but it cannot decide what is true or false.
Some argue that ChatGPT will be used to generate fake news, spread falsities, or be used for ill purposes. As for education, many US schools recently banned students from using ChatGPT on school networks because students began to use it as a shortcut for essays.

Your emotion helps you make sense of the world. At the core of an emotion is a subjective experience of it－what emotion scientists call “affect” (情感). Generally speaking, affect is what we are most focused on. Do you have chocolate cake in front of you? That’s good! Do you see a spider on the table! That’s bad!
Your affective reactions tell you which experiences are desirable, and which aren’t, but the total emotional experience includes all you do and think. You can learn a lot by observing and describing them. You can also learn a lot by appreciating their secret life.
The problem is: the affective features of emotions tend to dominate. Our subjective experience of emotion is almost all we can see. When emotions are only about what is pleasant or unpleasant in subjective experience right now, the more important features of emotion disappear.
If you can slow down and expand; if you stop running or clinging (沉浸其中) and adopt a sense of curiosity, emotions become more subtle and different. When fear comes up, don’t walk away so that fear dissipates. Instead, stay. Allow yourself to feel the nervousness, the sweating, and everything else that comes along with it. It is one of the hardest things to do in life, but it’s also one of the most rewarding. If you run, you are telling basic parts of your brain, “I guess this threat really was real. I better stay away from it.” You are training yourself to fear, regardless of that situation. If you cling, you are saying, “Escape from this emotion is a threat”, and since it is not a happy experience, happiness slips through your hands like sand.
Note that you cannot fool yourself. Just allow the full emotion. You will never enter into their secret life until you stop running or clinging. To control your life, you need to actively train your emotions to be your ally (同盟). Observe. Describe. Appreciate. Do that and you may find you have allies for healthy living that were there all along.
