From the concert halls of Europe to the tech industries of the United States, C. J. Santos has created a story across the globe.
Born in Brazil, Santos moved to Switzerland at the age of 18, and earned degrees in both music performance and business administration there. During his next 10 years’ “intense” career as a professional musician, he spent most of his time on the road. “I had the honor to perform in the top concert halls in Europe,” Santos said. “It really wore me out to be constantly traveling and performing, but it allowed me to see the world and understand it in its full diversity. This was a unique experience, and I carry its benefits with me to this day.”
Through these experiences, Santos was able to become fluent in six languages. With these skills under his belt, Santos worked with his wife, who is also fluent in four languages, to develop a small translation business.
“Running it with no prior business experience was a challenging but exciting learning-by-doing experience,” Santos said. “In addition, the translation industry experienced a massive digital transformation in the last decade.”
This brought Santos to an MBA/M.S. program in business analytics and information management, where he got rich experience, knowledge and perspectives in different industries. The program provided him with something he clearly enjoys in life: variety. “It helped me take the most advantage of the translation industry’s digital transformation. What I gained from the program is more than what I managed in the 15 years in Europe,” he added.
As Santos continues to grow his business, he’s also working as an advisor. “The world’s digital transformation has advanced at high speed,” he said. “To me, it’s very exciting to be a valuable resource to those who need help to jump on the digital express.”
24. What did Santos think of his career as a musician?
A. Stable but stressful. B. Demanding and fruitless.
C. Unique and enjoyable. D. Tiring but rewarding.
25. What drove Santos to take up the MBA/M.S. program?
A. His strong desire for a master’s degree. B. The challenge of starting a new business.
C. His lack of education background in business. D. The demand for a learning-by-doing experience.
26. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The great variety Santos enjoys in life. B. The application of the digital transformation.
C. The benefits Santos got from the program. D. Santos’s viewpoint on the translation industry.
27. In which aspect does Santos probably offer help as an advisor?
A. Digital solutions. B. Business analyses.
C. Translation skills. D. Resources management.

To persist, life must reproduce. Scientists at the University of Vermont, Tufts University, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have discovered an entirely new form of biological reproduction and applied their discovery to create the first-ever, self-replicating(自我复制的) living robots.
Named Xenobots after the African clawed frog from which scientists take their stem cells, the machines are less than 0.04 inches wide—small enough to travel inside human bodies. They can walk and swim, survive for weeks without food, and work together in groups. They even have regenerative capabilities; when the scientists sliced into one robot, it healed by itself and kept moving.
The Xenobots could potentially be used toward a host of tasks. Xenobots could be used to clean up radioactive waste and collect microplastics in the oceans. Some Xenobots had holes in their center, which could potentially be used to transport drugs or medicines. “Traditional robots degrade(降解) over time and can produce harmful ecological and health side effects,” researchers said in the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As biological machines, Xenobots are more environmentally friendly and safer for human health. Aside from these immediate practical tasks, Xenobots could also help researchers to learn more about cell biology—opening the doors to future advancement in human health and longevity.
While the prospect of self-replicating biotechnology could spark concern, the researchers said that the living machines were entirely contained in a lab and easily destroyed, as they are biodegradable and regulated by experts. “There are many things that are possible if we take advantage of this kind of plasticity(可塑性) and ability of cells to solve problems,” said Joshua Bongard, one of the lead researchers at the University of Vermont.
28.Which of the following best explains “regenerative” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Fighting disease. B. Replacing old cells.
C. Recovering and growing again. D. Self-cleaning regularly.
29.What can we learn about Xenobots from paragraph 3?
A. They can be widely applied to curing diseases.
B. They are harmless to the environment by degrading plastics.
C. They are specially designed to collect radioactive waste.
D. They can serve well the research on human health.
30.What is Bongard’s attitude towards the self-replicating biotechnology?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Negative.
31.What does the text mainly talk about?
A. An application of a machine in medicine.
B. The invention of the first self-reproduction robots.
C. The trend of developing biotechnology.
D. An experiment on African clawed frogs.

Seagrass meadows(海草床) are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are masterful at storing carbon. Thanks to the assistance of tiger sharks, a huge seagrass meadow in the Bahamas Banks was recently discovered, offering the world a tool to fight climate change.
Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker patches in the blue water. In this study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass ecosystems. They spend 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite tags(跟踪器) , seven sharks with camera tags, and used a 360-degree camera on a shark for the first time ever.
The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least 66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global seagrass. Seagrass can capture huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis(光合作用) and store it on the seafloor. In terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster at removing carbon than tropical rain forests. When it comes to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.
Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration projects. This new discovery offers optimism and proves the importance of the ocean for healing.
The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant blue carbon sink (蓝色碳汇) on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for a healthy future. The untapped potential of the ocean is limitless. These meadows can be protected and can be replicated(复制) , offering hope for climate change around the globe.
32. Why were tiger sharks chosen as research tools?
A. They have a strong connection with seagrass ecosystems.
B. They can quickly adjust themselves to the deep sea.
C. They can be easily equipped with experimental devices.
D. They are more flexible than other sea animals.
33. What are the numbers in paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The decline of global seagrass meadows.
B. The impact of climate change on sea life.
C. The rapid increase in the amount of carbon on Earth.
D. The potential value of the world’s largest seagrass ecosystem.
34. What are scientists doing to protect seagrass?
A. Developing new technology to collect seeds.
B. Planting more seagrass meadows.
C. Mapping the distribution of seagrass meadows.
D. Encouraging people to join in restoration projects.
35. Which could be the best title for the text?
A. The New Way of Removing Carbon
B. The Significance of Ocean Exploration
C. Tiger Sharks: Scientists’ Essential Helper to Study Climate
D. A New Discovery: World’s Largest Seagrass Meadow

In 2022 I decided to take a break from my cell phone. Instead of shutting it off completely, I decided to turn it off for a month to see how it goes. By the end of the month I found that I could live without a cell phone. It has been seven months since I have lived without a cell phone. I would like to share with you the reasons why I decided to get rid of my cell phone.
36 Checking my phone was the first thing I did when I woke up and the last thing I did before going to sleep. Throughout the day I would check my phone countless of times. It became a bad habit of mine in which the only way to break it was to be far away from it.
When I owned a phone, I was constantly connected to it. I wasn’t taking enough time to see what was right in front of me. There was no end of the day when it came to work and there was not nearly enough time to relax. Instead, I was constantly going. 37
38 When I was having a conversation with someone, I would think about what else I could be doing or texting other people instead of being fully present in the conversation. Now that I don’t have a cell phone, I am more present in my conversations and to my surroundings.
I was completely dependent on my cell phone. 39 A cell phone was my quick and easy problem solver. Whatever problem I met during the day, I used my cell phone for the answer.Without my cell phone I have become more self-dependent and a self-problem solver.
I also found that my sleep wasn’t as good as it had been in the past. Screens stimulate your mind and can affect your natural sleep patterns. 40 However, I did not have the self-control to do this. I would go to bed with a stimulated mind causing me to have a poor night sleep.
A.It made me less social.
B.I know that is not good for my health.
C.The answer to this is to turn off your phone a few hours before bed.
D.I found that I was addicted to my phone.
E.Having a cell phone split my attention in half.
F.These phone-free travels were some of the most liberating moments of my life.
G.It was my watch, my alarm clock, my email, my maps, my wallet, and my way to talk with friends.

第二节(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
In history, countless women 56 (fight) for gender equality. Mulan cut off her waist-length hair and disguised herself as a male warrior. Then came Marie Curie, who believed everyone was gifted for something and that that thing, 57 whatever cost, must be attained. In a time when stereotypes were placed upon women, their stories just empowered females.
It was these trailblazers 58 paved the way to the gender equality nowadays. In China, over half of the graduates today are women, 59 (surpass) males for the first time. At Tokyo this year, women made up 49 percent of 60 Olympic competitors. By comparison, in the 1908 games, men outnumbered women 53 to 1.
However, after the struggle of 61 (generation), are we seeing the light at the end of the tunnel? Nowadays, single women in their thirties are leftover women, 62 men in their thirties are golden bachelors. Women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman makes only 77 percent of what the average working man makes.
And my grandmother has just called me this morning to instruct me the stage etiquette of being sweet and 63 (adore). She did not know that over half of the national finalists are girls, and many of them have won the semi-finals by 64 (wear) black dark suits instead of the pink dresses, as she has said.
The power of ideals has enabled women to be equal counterparts to men. I believe the whole world will treat both men and women 65 (equal), just in the way that the judges have done to the contestants in this speech competition.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, “You can do anything you want to do.” My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock— always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard, which made me stand out. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship(实习资格) in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I’m new and they’re new, so if I’m going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, “Good, Faye. That’s exactly what you should do.”
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. “I’ve heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o’clock on Monday or eleven o’clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?” I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered(结结巴巴地说) a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, “What do you want?” He sounded furious but curious. “All I want is a chance to audition(试镜). I just want you to know my face. That’s all I’m asking.”
I didn’t know whether I’d ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, “Mr. Slaight wants to know if you’d like to come and audition for a new school life show.” I immediately answered, “Sure!”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance.
Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching.

A Charity Sale
On March 3rd, a charity sale was held on Huaji Square to raise money for people in need and all the classes took an active part in it.
The sale kicked off at 4 pm with some students performing live on a large stage in the center to get customers deeply involved in it. And around the stage, students from different classes set up their own stands, selling second-hand books, fancy hairpins, works of calligraphy, handmade drinks, snacks and so on, which were sold out in an instant. They even racked their brains to promote their goods, like offering discounts, playing games, singing and dancing, just to name a few.
Through this successful event, not only did all the participants display their various talents, but they also became more confident that a better world would be created by their constant and joint efforts.
第二节(满分25分)
Para. 1:
When I arrived at the station, I went direct into the audition and began my short performance. Taking a deep breath, I tried to steady my nerves, an inner voice encouraging me, “You can make it.” With the strong faith, I finished my performance to perfection, which was met with applause from the judges, Mr. Slaight included. After what seemed like ages, the result was announced—I was invited to join their new program. Before I had time to celebrate with my family, I was asked to begin my work as soon as possible. Through the high-energy rehearsals and thorough preparation, I rediscovered a new meaning of the words “hard work and perfection” and learned to make each performance better than the last.
Para. 2:
Finally came the day of my first public appearance on live TV with my parents at home watching. Everything was ready and the countdown timer was ticking. For a split second, my mind went blank. “Three, two, one. Go!” our director bellowed, bringing me back into reality. With the most confident smile, I warmly greeted the audience. How time flew! One-hour show came to an end, cheers erupting. The cameras off and the audience leaving, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. And then I flew back home, greeted with congratulations from my parents, which convinced me that I was doing what exactly I dreamed of and could do better. Since then, I have dedicated myself to television and received numerous awards. And I am really grateful to my parents, who always stand by me.

W: Oh Kevin, I’m preparing a presentation for the city library. It’s about a girl named Tracy Woods.
M: What’s special about her?
W: It was an amazing story. She brought specially-trained dogs to special education schools and helped children to build confidence. She believes that dogs can help children in ways we can’t. Dogs don’t judge, and they don’t care who you are or what you look like.
M: But putting dogs into a school? Aren’t they going to mess up the school?
W: Don’t worry. All the dogs are assessed and trained properly. There are now 40 dogs working with children aged from 6 to 18.
M: I hope the children love them.
W: Of course they do. I’ve got some pictures. I’ll show them at my presentation tomorrow morning.

M: Emily, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions.
W: It’s my pleasure.
M: People say you’re doing unpaid work in the new season of My Fair Lady. Is this what the show business has become?
W: No, not really. All of my acting in the new season is unpaid. But the crew is paid. This is to raise money for the post-production of the show.
M: I notice you’ve tried many different kinds of things: film, TV, and even theater.
W: Yeah, that’s how I was trained at university. I work on anything that excites me.
M: Tell us about the six months you recently spent at the workshop of the Film Center.
W: It was an unbelievable experience, teaching young actors and actresses, and working with some great acting artists. It was also great to work in various labs, such as directors, writers and so on. It’s very helpful for making you a really well-rounded and active member of the film and television industry.
M: Thank you very much, Emily. We look forward to your new season.

W: Hi, everyone. This is the monthly meeting of our club. We’ve been fortunate to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert, because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change their views about food and nutrition as there is so much confusing information online. It’s really important to hear what experts say, and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything we should eat. But, she will teach us to make better choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.
