Wu Haoyuan, 33, Beijing
Zhang: What’s a day for a police officer like?
Wu: We patrol (巡逻) every day. We sometimes wear plain clothes (便衣) and sometimes drive police cars. The sirens (警笛) on the cars let people know we are here to take care of them. Sanlitun is a busy place. We deal with 50 to 90 cases every day. Staying up late is part of the job. Every four days, each police officer here gets a 24-hour duty. Zhang: If I’m not very strong or brave, can I still become a police officer?
Wu: Yes, you can. If you are physically strong, you may want to join the Special Weapons and Tactics (特警) team. If you’re good at dealing with different people, you might be a good community police officer. If you’re shy but careful, you can do office work.
As for being brave, police officers are not always fearless. Even now, when I face dangerous people, I still get scared. But our sense of responsibility gives us the courage to keep going.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led many people to do more nature and outdoor activities such as playing frisbee, camping and skateboarding. Following this trend, “going to the mountains” has steadily grown in popularity among Chinese people.
Mountain-style outfits (穿搭), both functional and fashionable, first became popular in Japan as “yama” (meaning “mountain” in Japanese) clothes. Now such clothes have caught on in Chinese fashion as well. Colors such as green, khaki (卡其色) and gray are preferred as fashionistas (时尚达人) try to match tone-on-tone (同系配色的) clothing.
Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu released a report on the country’s top 10 lifestyle trends that showed young people from big cities preferred to join outdoor activities and wear outdoor outfits last year.
According to the online market platform Tmall, when the Singles’ Day shopping spree (狂欢) started on Oct 31, 2022, the sales of camping and climbing equipment jumped by 115 percent and 81.2 percent respectively during the first hour, compared with the same period in 2021.
“Chinese ski fans focus more on their ski outfits now,” Bai Yifan, a snowboarding influencer, said to China Daily. He says “mountain-style” outfits have become popular among ski fans.

“‘Mountain-style’ outfits follow the trend that consumers want to get closer to nature, reflecting their pursuit of simplicity (简约), practicality and the natural world. The trend’s popularity has led consumers to pay more attention to the natural environment and attach greater importance to healthy living,” Jiang Shuai, manager of the e-commerce (电子商务) department of Toread, an outdoor clothing brand, told China Daily.

The science fiction movie The Wandering Earth II has been a hit since its release on Jan 22. The space elevators in the movie are quite impressive—elevator cars travel quickly between the cables that connect Earth’s surface and the space station. This device may not only be entirely fictional in the future.
Early in 1895, Russian scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was inspired by the Eiffel Tower. He pointed out that if humans could build a tower high enough to reach space, people would be able to travel by space elevators. However, such a tower is impossible because no matter how large the base is, it would not be able to support the whole system.
Scientists thus considered the Idea in a different way. There are satellites in Earth’s geosynchronous orbit (地球同步轨道) which is about 36,000 kilometers in altitude. They appear to be fixed in space and rotate (旋转) around Earth once per day because their speed is just right. According to Scientific American, scientists argued that if such a satellite were to drop cables toward Earth which were then fixed to its surface, the whole system would rotate along with the planet. The elevator could then travel through the tracks.
Now that the theory is sound, one of the challenges that stop engineers from building the elevators is the cables’ material. According to an article by the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a carbon nanotube (碳纳米管) made of carbon atoms (分子) might be the most viable material. A short tube that weighs 1.6 grams can hold more than 800 tons which is about the weight of 160 elephants. Since its discovery in 1991, scientists have been trying to create a tube that is as long as possible. However, the longest tube with a perfect structure was only about half a meter, developed by a team at Tsinghua University in 2013.
Why go through so much trouble? The benefits of space elevators are clear. For example, elevators require far less energy and money than rockets, currently the main transportation to space. Also, with space elevators, space missions would be more frequent—even become a routine.
21. Why is the movie The Wandering Earth II mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To show the popularity of the movie. B. To voice the author’s views on the movie.
C. To explain what makes the movie impressive. D. To introduce the topic of space elevators.
22. What does the underlined phrase “the idea” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Putting up a large base for a space tower. B. Building a device for people to reach space.
C. Connecting satellites with Earth by cables. D. Creating a system rotating along with Earth.
23. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The discovery of the carbon nanotube.
B. The current application of carbon nanotubes.
C. The difficulty of developing long carbon nanotubes.
D. The advantages of carbon nanotubes as the cables’ material.
24. What does the underlined word “viable” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. valuable B. workable C. disable D. changeable
25. Which of the following is the best title for the article?
A. Future is coming. B. How the space elevators work.
C. Future tech rises from fiction. D. What an amazing movie!
