Becca was 6 when she was told she had cancer on Sept. 8, 2014. She clearly remembers the bad days of her 26 months of non—stop treatment. Luckily, Becca celebrated her final treatment on Nov. 13, 2016, and she has been cancer—free ever since. But she was thinking about what her life was like while experiencing the treatment.
“I was never able to do much, and that’s what the kids lying in their hospital beds right now experience, asking their mom and dad, ‘When are we leaving? When can I play with my friends?’ So I decided I have to help them.”
In February, 2017, Becca came up with the idea for Knots and Arrows, a company that makes bracelets(手镯)out of swimsuit materials. Part of the money made from each bracelet goes to the organizations that help people with cancer.
Becca created the company with her father, Gerhard Salmins. Gerhard Salmins once had cancer and already recovered from it. “I would be in the hospital sitting there crying and then my dad would come in and he would play games with me” she said. “It made me forget about what I was going through.” Becca said the name of the organization shows the motto(座右铭)she stuck to through her personal cancer journey.
Her organization has already given thousands of dollars to research organizations and families in need. Becca said she hoped her bracelets would make people remember that great things can result from small changes. “No matter what age you are what you look like, and how you act, you can make a difference!” she said.
    24. What happened to Becca at the end of 2016?
    A. She recovered from cancer. B. She created an organization
    C. She raised a lot of money. D. She was helped by a company
    25. What do we know about Becca’s father?
    A. He showed Becca a famous motto. B. He fought off cancer successfully.
    C. He advised Becca to forget her pain. D. He named the company Knots and Arrows.
    26. Which of the following words can best describe Becca?
    A. Brave. B. Creative. C. Caring. D. Clever.
    27. In Becca’s opinion, what’s the meaning of her bracelets?
    A. To tell us having a motto is important.
    B. To prove cancer can be got over successfully.
    C. To show there’s always someone who needs help.
    D. To make us realize everyone can make a difference.
    C
Cuckoos(布谷乌)are masters of cheating. When it comes to raising young, they don’t spend the energy building a nest, protecting eggs or feeding children. Instead the female passes these roles on to other birds. They don’t raise their own young. Usually, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, fooling other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs.
To succeed in doing this, a female cuckoo watches over her chosen nest to observe feeding times. When the host parent leaves its nest in search of food the cuckoo quickly lays her eggs among those already in the nest. Sometimes she will even destroy and remove one of the hosts eggs to make room for her own.
Cuckoos are medium-sized birds with long tails, and often have gray or brown backs. When they hatch(孵化)and begin to grow in a host’s nest the difference between the two can be obvious to an onlooker. Often the cuckoo is twice the size of its foster parents, but still continues to receive food from them.
The cuckoo imposter(冒名顶替者)is usually the only baby bird that the host parent has to care for. This is because when the cuckoo hatches after around 11 days, it gets rid of all the other eggs in the nest. It will lift each egg onto its back before throwing them one by one over the edge of the nest. Even then the non-biological parent will continue to treat it as one of its own.
Also, cuckoos have developed to produce eggs that are similar in color to their main hosts’. This reduces the chances of eggs being attacked. Female cuckoos have been known to take host birds’ attention away after laying their eggs by producing a noise similar to Eurasian sparrow hawks, scaring birds away from returning to the nest and allowing time for the cuckoo to make her escape unnoticed.
    28. What do mother cuckoos usually do when it comes to raising their young?
    A. Attend to eggs. B. Build a new nest. C. Rely on other birds. D. Learn feeding skills.
    29. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. Other cuckoos. B. Baby cuckoos. C. Its host parents. D. Its birth parents.
    30. What can be inferred about the cuckoo imposter?
    A. It usually hatches out earlier than the other eggs in the nest.
    B. It throws all the other eggs out of nests with its mothers help.
    C. It often makes a noise to scare other birds away from the nest.
    D. It looks much larger than other eggs in the nest before hatching.
    31. Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. How cuckoos protect their children B. How cuckoos fool other birds
    C. How cuckoos destroy others nests D. How cuckoos produce eggs in host nests
    D
Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels(商标). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren't necessarily more nutritious and they're no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria(细菌)either.
The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic foods more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldn’t assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer”. For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels ofomega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease.
However, these nutritional differences were too small and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends. Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices but that doesn’t always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that “whether you buy organic food or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste. Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.
    32. What does the new research question?
    A. Whether organic food should replace traditional food.
    B. Whether organic food has been overpriced by farmers.
    C. Whether organic food is more environment-friendly.
    D. Whether organic food is more nutritious and healthier.
    33. What did Smith-Spangler and her colleagues find?
    A. Fresh food is as good as organic food.
    B. No bacteria were found in organic food.
    C. All the food they examined were actually safe.
    D. Traditional food was grown with more natural methods.
    34. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage?
    A. Organic chicken and pork. B. Organic milk and chicken
    C. Traditional chicken and pork. D. Traditional fruit and vegetables
    35. What is the author's attitude toward organic food?
    A. Doubtful. B. Neutral. C. Unconcerned. D. Positive.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
School is tough enough as it is but distance learning presents a whole new challenge. Many students struggle to focus on their homework when they study at home as online courses call for self-discipline(自律). 36
Motivate yourself. Think about how traditional classroom settings motivate students to get their work done: deadlines written on a whiteboard, friendly reminders and suggestions from teachers, and group study sessions with classmates. 37 Write down your deadlines and get in touch with your classmates to study together and quiz each other online.
38 You’re not the only one to struggle with online learning, so don’t be afraid to get in touch with your teacher and classmates with any questions you might have. Similarly, remember your teacher and classmates might reach out to you with questions as well. Respond to their messages in a timely manner to keep open lines of communication.
Find a good study spot. Houses are full of distractions especially if you’re in no mood to study. Set yourself up for success by reducing these distractions and creating an environment where it is easy to do schoolwork. 39 Leave your phone in another room in order to avoid temptation(诱惑)from social media or online games.
Use what you have. One of the many benefits of online learning is having endless Internet resources. 40 Be familiar with study resources and open education sites, and then use them to add to your studies and quiz yourself before exams. Online classes might require more self-discipline than classroom learning, but that hard work will surely pay off.
    A. Manage your time.
    B. Be ready to ask all the questions.
    C. A short break is also necessary for online learning.
    D. You can also use these helpful methods in your own home.
    E. Many of them might help you understand your studies easily.
    F. Keep up with your online schoolwork with these tips for success.
    G. If possible, find a quiet place away from your housemates, family members and TV.

When I was a child, we lived next door to the Schonfield Home. People who got too old to take care of themselves lived there. I was a regular visitor and volunteer there. I enjoyed spending time with the caring and responsible workers and the old people who always seemed happy to see me.
One day, a very old lady named Mrs. Kurtz moved to the Schonfield Home. She seemed sad all the time. For days, I had never seen her smile or laugh like the other old people. And no one ever came to visit her. My parents learned that she had no family or friends.
Weeks after Mrs. Kurtz moved into the Schonfield Home, I was visiting the home again. And I saw her sitting alone looking unusually upset. I asked one of the other old people, Mrs Smith, why Mrs. Kurtz was more depressed than usual. Mrs. Smith explained to me that Mrs Kurtz had turned eighty-nine, and that she was upset to be celebrating another birthday all alone without any cards or gifts. She truly believed there was no one in the world who loved her.
This moved me deeply, and I started to create a plan in my mind. I ran home and raced to my room. I took out my piggy bank that I always valued. And I poured out all the money that I had received on birthdays and other special occasions. I had been saving money for a new bike. Although the money wasn’t enough to buy a bike it was enough for what I wanted to do then.
I raced down the stairs. My mother was cleaning the house. I walked to her and explained what I was about to do, and she smiled at me proudly. She planted a kiss on my cheek and said, “I must be the luckiest mother in the world to have such a caring daughter. My mother stopped what she was doing.

    Paragraph 1
And we went to a gift shop together. There we bought a lovely heart-shaped musical jewelry box. Then we bought a birthday card and a beautiful bouquet of red roses. I wrote the following words on the card: “To the best lady at the Schonfield Home, Happy birthday and all the best! From your neighbor who loves you very much, Mimi”. With all our gifts, we headed for the Schonfield Home. And as expected, we found Mrs. Kurtz sitting alone on a chair.
    Paragraph 2
We approached Mrs. Kurtz and gave her our gifts. I saw her eyes widen in surprise when she received our gifts. As she finished reading my message on the card, she looked up and flashed a beautiful smile, which I had never seen on her face before. When I said goodbye to her a while later, Mrs. Kurtz was still smiling, and at that moment, I noticed that my heart was smiling along with hers. At that moment, I understood a kind act is often its own reward.
