Yu Lei comes from a city in North China’s Inner Mongolia. At school, Yu Lei took part in many shows, but he hated it when he found that the well-designed tools were carelessly thrown away after the play. He started by learning from his father and creating (创造) small things himself out of the tools that are thrown away.
In July 2020, two years after leaving college, he worked together with his two friends and opened the Regenerate Lab. There the three men have different tasks—with all the materials collected in their room, Yu Lei and Wodele design and make all kinds of things, while Yu Weiyi looks after the business part.
The things they have made are used in their plays. They spend lots of time creating children’s plays and shows and have made four plays so far. “I used to collect materials from bird and flower markets,” Yu Lei said. “But most of them are closed now.” But it is not a problem for them, because they have many other sources (来源). “People of all ages are interested in our work and keep collecting different kinds of waste for us.” Yu Lei said.

Finally, in March of 1703, the Adventure set sail for India. The winds were good until we got near Madagascar, an island off the east coast of Africa. Then a strong wind began to blow. We were trapped in the wind for twenty days. After many hours, the wind finally stopped and the sea became quieter. The storm had blown the Adventure hundreds of kilometers to the east.
“Where are we?” I asked the captain(船长).
“I can’t tell for sure.” He said, “we are running out of water. We must reach land soon to fill our water barrels(桶).” Many days passed and we saw nothing but the sea. One morning, before everyone died of thirst, a sailor cried out, “Land!” Everyone on the ship was silent for a second. And quickly the ship sailed closer to the land. The sailors suddenly became tumultuous and all cheered.
“You men,” said the captain to the sailors, “take the rowboats(划艇) and go. Fill the water barrels with fresh water.”
“Captain,” I said, “may I go with them to take a look at this place?”
“Of course,” he replied. “You can tell me later what it is like.”
When the rowboats reached the coast, one of the sailors said, “we will have to walk along the coast to look for fresh water.”
“I’m going to take a little walk,” I told them. “I will meet you back here in an hour.”
I walked about a kilometer, enjoying being on land again. Then I turned and walked back to meet the sailors.
When I arrived on the beach, the sailors were not there. They were in the rowboats, rowing as fast as they could toward the Adventure. I was going to shout out to them when I saw a very huge man walking through the sea. I was trying to catch up with the rowboats. The sailors were almost at the ship, and I could see that the huge man would not be able to catch them. Instead, it was coming towards me. Great fear went through my mind.
    27. What happened when they got near the east coast of Africa?
    A. They decided to set sail for India. B. The captain lost his sense of direction.

    28. What does the underlined word “tumultuous” most probably mean?
    A. sad B. excited C. bored D. relaxed

    B. Because he got tired of travelling and decided to live on the land.
    C. Because he wanted to take a walk and look around.
    D. Because he was looking for the huge man on the land.
    30. What would most probably happen next?
    A. The writer saw the sailors were caught by the huge man.
    B. The sailors failed to get on the ship because it was too far away
    C. The writer tried to run away as fast as possible.
    D. The huge man caught the captain and controlled the ship.

Chinese products (产品) have been going all over the world.

More people trust Chinese brands. “Made in China” becomes cool. “They are beautiful and offer something special that American phones don’t have,” an article on CNN once said about Chinese smartphones.

How close do you stand when you talk to a friend? You can stand close to people in the Middle East but don’t stand too close to North Americans! Give them more personal space. Do you know how to touch people correctly? Chinese girls often walk arm in arm with their friends. South Americans sometimes hold your arm when they talk to you, so you can’t move away! But in Britain many people don’t like other people to touch them at all.
Do you look at people when you talk? In some places, it isn’t polite to look at people when you talk, but in other countries it isn’t polite to look somewhere else. In Britain and the USA, people usually look at each other when they talk.
And how do you say goodbye? That’s easy, wave(挥手)to say goodbye. But be careful! In Greece, it’s not at all polite! In fact, it’s very rude!

How did the sea horse get its name? It’s not hard to guess. The top half of the fish looks like a small horse.
Sea horses live in warm ocean waters all over the world. There are 32 different kinds of sea horses. Their sizes are quite different from one inch long to about one foot long. Because their fins are small, sea horses swim very slowly. They keep safe from other fish by hiding in plants and grasses. They can also change colours to keep themselves. Sea horses feed on live food, such as tiny shrimps. A sea horse has no teeth, so it eats the shrimp whole.
A sea horse keeps the same mate for its whole life, unlike most kinds of fish. And it’s the male sea horse, not the female, which gives birth to baby sea horses. How does this happen? Baby sea horses start out as eggs, which come from the female’s body. But the female places the eggs in the male sea horse’s pouch (育儿袋). The male carries the eggs for about three weeks until they hatch (孵化).
The number of sea horses is becoming smaller. Why is this happening? Some places where sea horses once lived have been filled in to make new land. Also, many sea horses are caught and kept in aquariums (水箱) where they can’t live long. The best place for a sea horse is the ocean. There it can find a mate and bring new sea horses into the world.
    33. Sea horses do the following things except ________ to keep themselves safe from other fish.
    A. changing colours B. changing sizes C. hiding in plants D. hiding in grasses
    34. Why is the number of sea horses becoming smaller?
    A. Because they grow at a very low speed. B. Because their homes are changed into new land.
    C. Because they are killed by people for food. D. Because their food is becoming less and less.
    35. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. Father Sea Horses B. How Sea Horses Grow
    C. Kinds of Sea Horses D. All About Sea Horses

The music is on. The figure skater(花滑运动员)jumps and spins(旋转). One turn, two turns, three turns—it seems they never get dizzy no matter how many times they spin. Why?
People often feel dizzy and lose balance(平衡)after spinning around. This is because when we move our head during a spin, our eyes start to move in the opposite direction. They reach their limit(极限)before our head finishes a full turn, so they turn back to a new starting point, said Scientific American. When our eyes repeat this, we get dizzy.
Figure skaters don’t have any super power. They get dizzy, too. Their secret is lots and lots of practice, according to Science Focus magazine. As they train more, their brains get used to the feeling.
Skaters also have methods to help them feel less dizzy. The first method is called “opposing eye movement”. It’s like the eye movement when we watch a moving train pass in front of us while our heads stay still. Skaters can train themselves to have this eye movement when they spin. Scientific American said this can offset(抵消)the dizzy feeling.
The second method is keeping a uniform speed(匀速). We feel dizzier when our brain feels changes in speed. Another method is that skaters can also pick one spot(点)to stare at as they stop turning, said Science Focus.
    29. When will people feel dizzy according to the text?
    A. When people spin a lot. B. When people jump a lot.
    C. When people listen to music. D. When people move their eyes fast.

Many people love travelling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
Most travellers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re travelling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people. When the Japanese meet new people, they like giving business cards—you should read the card carefully, not just put it in your pocket.
In most countries in Europe, people expect a lot of eye contact (接触) when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. In South America people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA, you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s rude to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish before you start speaking.
In restaurants in China you can leave a bit of food on your plate, and it’s OK to start smoking before other people finish eating, which you mustn’t do in the UK. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer (更喜欢) going on holiday in their own countries—or you might just decide to stay at home!
    25. What does the underlined word “interrupt” would most likely mean?
    A. Follow. B. Break. C. Agree. D. Touch.
    26. What is the correct order of the subheadings (小标题) from Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 5?
①Eating out ②At home ③Body language ④Face-to-face communication
    A. ②③④① B. ④①②③ C. ③④①② D. ①③②④
    27. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
    A. In Russia, it’s impolite to shake hands with people in a doorway.
    B. We should put the business cards in our pocket at once in Japan.
    C. In China, people cannot smoke before other people finish eating.
    D. In South Africa, you can stand closely to others.

Have you ever tried hiking? I had my first hiking experience on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) with my friend when I went to Yunnan.
This was the first time I had traveled so far without my parents. I was very excited and discussed the plan with my friend almost every week. But, not everything went according to the plan. When we arrived at Lijiang, the weather was not good. It was a cloudy day and we could hardly see the mountain. My friend and I decided to book a tour called Hiking to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
The next morning, we arrived at the starting point and waited for our guide and driver. We passed a lake on our way to the mountain. It was hard to believe that the temperature could change so fast. When we were in the car, we just wore shirts. However, when we walked to the lakeside, I felt a cold wind blow. The lake was beautiful. There were lots of wild animals there.
At the foot of the mountain, we could only see mountains, soil and the sky at a glance. When we arrived at an altitude (海拔) of about 3800 metres, I started to feel a bit sick. This made it hard to enjoy the view. The guide gave me some advice. He said, “Watch your step instead of thinking about how many steps you have to take.” It was not easy, but the experience was unforgettable. It was nice to see the valley (山谷) from up above when we finished the hike.
In 10 days, we climbed the mountain, visited lots of ancient towns and traveled to Xishuangbanna. It’s hard to say which part was the best. Things like this make it so fun to travel.

If you have to describe yourself to someone else, what will you say? It can be difficult to see yourself from the outside, but knowing who you are, namely self-awareness (自我意识) , can help you understand feelings and make friendships closer.
Self-awareness means having a good understanding of our own character (性格) , that is, having the ability to see ourselves clearly. If you’re self-aware, you may know that you love playing an instrument because you do well in it, and music makes you happy, or that you prefer watching TV on your own because it helps you relax.
Knowing what you like and dislike, what you do well in and what you find difficult allows you to make better decisions about friendships, schoolwork and so on. You learn to trust your own feelings more, which builds confidence (信心) . The World Health Organization says self-awareness is one of ten important life skills that help young people live happier, healthier lives. Being self-aware doesn’t mean only thinking of yourself. By understanding your own feelings, you will better understand other people too.
How do you learn to be self-aware? It’s a good way to ask questions. But ask yourself questions that start with “What” instead of “Why”. So if you don’t understand why you keep arguing with a friend, ask yourself what you disagree on instead of why you’re arguing.
Learning to be more self-aware is a skill, which means you learn it as you grow. So be bold and try out new things, like playing a new sport or listening to different kinds of music. Don’t be afraid to dislike something——discovering (发现) what you find difficult is a key part of learning more about yourself.
    39. What is the second paragraph mainly about?

My father and I were both angry. “Never set foot in this house again!” shouted my father. With tears in my eyes, I rushed out to the street.
I walked aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I seemed to see my childhood from another space: happy.
But now... I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because my dad is getting old. We have different ways of thinking. He always puts his opinions on me. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us that can never be opened.
I walked in the streets. My heart was cold on this hot summer night. As I walked on, there were fewer and fewer people in the streets, until I had only the street lights with me. When I finally reached the building where I lived, I saw that the light was still on.
I thought to myself: “Is my father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me?”
In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, my dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except my father’s.
Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any moments of regret. However, after an argument he has the habit of tucking me underneath the covers (掖被子) while I am sleeping.
This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature.
The light was still on. “Am I wrong?” I whispered, maybe ... With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tears ran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that there wasn’t the iron door that I had imagined between us at all. Love — it’s second to none.

    BOOK INTRODUCTION——Number the Stars (《细数繁星》)
It’s hard to believe that I wrote Number the Stars more than twenty years ago. It seems like yesterday that I answered the phone on a snowy January morning and received the news that it had won the 1990 Newbery Medal.
I think readers of every age may match themselves with the important persons in the books they love and ask themselves: Would I have done that? What choice(选择) would I have made?
And ten—the age of Annemarie in Number the Stars—is an age when young people are beginning to develop a strong set of personal ethics(道德观;价值观)….They are beginning to realize that the world they live in is not always good and safe.
So they follow a story about a ten-year-old girl who is caught in a dangerous situation, and she must make decisions. Young readers become cheerful when Annemarie takes a deep breath, enters the woods, faces the danger, stands up to the enemy and gets her success.
Today, the book has come out in many countries and translated into many languages. It found its way into the hands and hearts of children who had read about but never experienced war…. Books do change lives, I know; and many readers have told me that Number the Stars changed theirs when they were young, that it made them think about both. cruelty(残酷;残忍) and courage. “It was something that shaped my idea of how people should be treated,” wrote a young woman recently, telling me about her own fourth-grade experience with the book.
The Danish friend who first told me the story of her childhood, and who became the Annemarie in my book, is an old woman now. So am I. We both love thinking of the children reading the story today, coming to it for the first time and realizing that once, for a short time and in a small place, a group of prejudice-free(不存偏见的)people created a touching story of love. and kindness towards others.

    Do you know black boxes?
Black boxes are flight recorders placed in an aircraft for the purpose of making it easier to know how the accidents happened in flight.
An airplane actually has two black boxes. The flight data recorder catches the information, which can discover whether human error or instrument problems contributed to an accident. The cockpit (驾驶舱) voice recorder records pilot voices and cockpit sounds.
The black boxes are not black. They are painted bright orange to help with their recovery after accidents. The outside is with stripes of reflective tape (反光带). The black boxes are usually placed in the tail of a plane where they are more likely to survive a crash. A flight data recorder is required to store at least 25 hours of flight information. A cockpit voice recorder is required to record at least 2 hours of audio information.
For the black boxes to survive a crash, they are built to be waterproof, fireproof, shockproof, heat and pressure and corrosion resistant (耐腐蚀). The black box must be able to hold 3, 400 times the force of gravity, when the airplane goes down at the speed of about 500 km/h. It must also survive flames up to 1, 100 degrees Celsius for one hour, and the boxes should be able to give out a signal once per second while put under 6, 000 meters of saltwater for at least 30 days.
How is data from black boxes picked up? It needs special skills to physically bring the black boxes back. Investigators may need to clean and dry the black boxes and download data from them. It takes time to download and get the information from data. If the storing units go wrong, it will take longer time, either days or months.
So, the black boxes are very important to explain to everyone what happened during the flight.

I walked away from shore and was glad to find a clear spring. Then I cut myself a strong stick to protect myself and climbed a tree. There I slept the first night in my new home.
The morning came clearly. I felt surprisingly energetic after a night in a tree. I went to shore, where I found out that the storm had driven the broken ship from the sandbar (沙洲) . The waves had set it on the rocks within a mile off shore.
I also found the boat that we had struck out in. A fast-flowing inlet (入口) lay between me and the boat. I decided to deal with the broken ship first because it held more useful items (物品) .
The tide (潮汐) crept out (缓缓退去) farther and farther until I could walk upon sand to within a quarter mile of the ship. I realized all of us would have survived the storm if we’d only stayed with the ship.
I cried at the thought of how easily I could be sharing this adventure with a group. But this was no time for tears. I dried my face and took off my clothes so I could swim to the ship.
Once I reached it, I swam around looking for a way to get planks (木板) . I noticed a hanging bit of rope and used it to climb the side. I found the ship’s food was free of water. I filled my mouth with biscuits. Now I only needed a boat to get the food to shore.
I collected boards and bits of sail (钉子). I tied the sails together before keeping them overboard. Then I put the boards together into a raft (木筏) . I laid more aboard across my raft so that anything I put on it would be safe from the water.
