Sometimes you may see news of satellites sent into space. On Feb 21, for example, a US company Space X took 46 satellites into space. On Feb. 27, China sent 22 satellites into space. Why do we need so many satellites?
At present, there are over 3, 000 active satellites moving around the Earth. Satellites do all kinds of work, from passing TV signals to giving you directions on the road and helping scientists do research.
For example, the 22 satellites China just sent up are part of the BeiDou Navigation (导航)Satellite System. Shared bikes that use BeiDou chips (芯片)can have the more exact positioning. Drones (无人机)can also use BeiDou to fly.
Before satellites, TV signals didn't go very far. Mountains or tall buildings would stop them. Phone calls to faraway places were also a problem. Setting up telephone wires (线)over long distance was difficult. With satellites, TV signals and phone calls can be sent directly to a satellite and back down to different places on Earth. Space X's Starlink project is trying to go further. It plans to use satellites to provide the Internet in the future.
Satellites can also provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They help scientists know changes in weather and climate. By checking wildfires and volcanoes (野火和火山), satellites help people deal with natural disasters. Farmers can use satellites to decide the best time to water their fields.
Some satellites fly near other planets. They may look for water on Mars or take close-up pictures of Saturn^ rings (土星环).
    31. What does the writer mainly tell us in Paragraph 1?

For a girl from a village in China, a dream job could be anything, except perhaps coming back to work in the village where she was born. But Zhang Guifang, a 24-year-old college graduate, returned to her village in Central China's Henan, even though she had been running a business in Tianjin for over a year.
As a young member of the Communist Party of China, she was chosen Party secretary (书记)of Sanjia village in December last year. She spent five months planning the creation of wall paintings of colourful sunflowers, wings and balloons to make the village houses and walls beautiful. She wants to use them to create what she calls a "rainbow village". While explaining her ideas, Zhang said that she just wanted to help villagers so they would be able to live a richer life.
Her hard work and creativity paid off. For the first time, Sanjia has become famous, with pictures of the village spreading widely on the Internet.
Sanjia is a very common village community in Hebi. Although she once raised many ideas to develop her village, it wasn't put into practice because of money. The rainbow village idea would be the most cost-efficient (经济有效的)project because it didn't cost a lot of money and the risk wasn't too great.
"We thought that if it brought in tourists, even if all the villagers did was to sell bottles of water or handmade noodles by the side of tine road, they could make money, " she said.
As a young village head, Zhang's job isn't easy. She often cried at first and once considered giving up. However, she told herself that no matter how hard things were, she would hold on for another month. Slowly, her hard work and creativity paid off, which improved her confidence and led her to think bigger. Zhang was planning to create a countryside study base, where students from cities could experience country's life and learn about the land.

    A. Because the idea didn't require a lot of money.
    B. Because the idea could bring in many tourists.

For middle and primary school students, being able to cook has become a must. They will also need to learn how to plant vegetables, raise poultry (家禽)and maintain home appliances (维修电器)under new requirements for labor education.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) brought out a new standard for labor education in schools in 2021. Starting from 2022 autumn term, students in primary and middle schools have to take courses on labor skills at least once a week.
The new standards include three types of labor tasks. The first is basic life skills like everyday household chores, including cleaning, cooking, using and maintaining home appliances. Next is industry and agriculture labor practice, including new technologies like 3D printing, and traditional crafts (工艺)learning. The third type is service work such as community volunteer services.

But according to the MOE, labor education must be built up to help students enrich their life experience, cultivate (培养)a positive view of labor, value hard work, and develop an interest in labor.
Online people have been busy discussing the new standards on social media.
Li Ting, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Shanghai strongly supports labor education. For the past year, she trained her daughters to do chores and make simple dishes for the family.

“Children's hand-eye coordination (协调)time management and organization skills can be trained by doing housework, M said Sun Yunxiao, a parenting expert.

One of my grandchildren sent me a self-portrait(自画像)she created for her art class. The top half of the portrait shows her hair parted in the middle with her big brown eyes looking through her glasses.
The bottom half of the self-portrait is a bright blue facemask with colourful flowers. It is a clever art project with the facemask as a cover. The mask is removable(可去掉的), but we received her picture with the mask on.
Her eyes looked a bit confused. Who hasn’t looked confused in recent months? Luckily, I think I know what the problem is. The child needs to work on her smize.
Fashion model Tyra Banks created the term “smize” several years ago. A smize is a combination of smile and eyes, meaning to smile with your eyes. Models can make their eyes smile without moving their mouths.
Smizing is big right now. It’s hard to show friendliness when the smiling half of your face is covered. Restaurants are even teaching wait staff to perfect the smize behind facemasks.
You can smize by scrunching(使收缩)up your eyes and using your cheeks to push your eyes up to create a smiling effect. It’s hard to do, but you can learn how to do it by practicing in front of a mirror.
Like most people, I can wear my mask and smile at the same time, but my eyes can’t smile without my mouth. They have an unbreakable bond.
Too bad we often can’t see one another smiling these days because smiling is like yawning-highly contagious(传染的). Smiling and kindly acknowledging on another as fellow human beings wouldn’t be the worst thing to sweep the nation. Go ahead, smize or smile, whatever you can do. Spread it around.
    30. Why did the author mention her grandchild’s self-portrait?
    A. To show how COVID-19 has affected people’s lives.
    B. To explain how people communicate during the pandemic.
    C. To raise public awareness of wearing masks.
    D. To lead up to the main topic of a special way of smiling.
    31. Why do we need to smize, according to the author?
    A. To exercise our eye muscles. B. To show friendliness.
    C. To calm down. D. To follow a popular trend.
    32. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
    A. The origin of the smize. B. The benefits of smizing.
    C. How to smize. D. The different types of smizes.
    33. What might the author agree with?
    A. Smizing is similar to yawning.
    B. Her cheek fat makes it easier for her to smize.
    C. It is important for us to spread smize or smiles.
    D. Smizing will become increasingly popular across the nation.

Pacheco is a senior at Cathedral Catholic High School in California, US. When she was a little girl, her parents let her choose an American Girl doll. She picked one with a hair color and style that matched her own. “She looked like me, and I felt there was a piece of me in her,” said Pacheco. “You see yourself in a doll, and it’s really special to have that connection.”
But what about children with medical condition who don’t like anyone else? Pacheco wanted to give these children the same gift she got as a child. Over the past several months, she has made dolls for kids who have unique facial appearances. “Each of these kids is so special. I hope through these dolls they can see themselves in a new light and really appreciate their beauty.”
Pacheco got the idea for the doll project after remembering a magazine story about “A Doll Like Me”. This is a project that makes custom dolls for children with disabilities. Pacheco reached out to Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, an organization that provides free operations and other medical treatment for children. She asked if she could create similar dolls for some of its clients (顾客).
For this project, Pacheco watched doll-making course, then designed her own patterns and figured out how to make dolls that looked like her clients. It was important to her that the children could see themselves in the dolls, but that their differences would not be the most noticeable feature (特征).
Zulema Gillett got one of Pacheco’s dolls. She said she loved the idea. “Who doesn’t want a doll that looks like them and that they could relate to (产生联系)?” Gillett said.
Michelle Pius, chief development officer for Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, was impressed by Pacheco’s dolls. “It is a very kind and warm-hearted gesture to make dolls that will help a child feel like they’re not alone,” Pius said.

I’m a procrastinator (有拖延症的人). In university, I should spend a year on my 90-page senior thesis (论文). I didn’t write a word until three days before the deadline. Finally, I wrote 90 pages over 72 hours, pulling not one but two all-nighters to finish just before the deadline. Of course, it was a very bad thesis.
I think that the brain of procrastinators and non-procrastinators are actually different. Both brains have a Rational (理性的) Decision-Maker in them who makes us take action right now. But the procrastinator’s brain also has an Instant Gratification (及时行乐) Monkey who doesn’t like that plan and only cares about two things: easy and fun.
For the procrastinators, it is the Monkey that actually takes the wheel. But how can they start working when really important things happen? It turns out the procrastinator also has a Panic (恐慌的) Monster. He is not active most of the time, but he suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close. He’s the only thing the Instant Gratification Monkey is afraid of.
Seeing the Panic Monster, the Instant Gratification Monkey goes up a tree and hides! The Rational Decision-Maker can then take the wheel and the procrastinator can start working.
This explains how the procrastinator’s system works. But if it works why bother?
Well, it’s because there are situations in our lives that don’t have deadlines, like seeing your family or exercising. In all of these non-deadline situations, the Panic Monster doesn’t show up. So the procrastinator’s system actually doesn’t start work.
So what should we do? Maybe we can make something called a Life Calendar. We need to take a long, hard look at that calendar and think about what we’re really procrastinating on.
    39. Why does the writer mention his university experience in the first paragraph?
    A. To show that we all have limitless talent.
    B. To give an example of procrastination.
    C. To explain that procrastination is quite common.
    D. To prove that procrastinators are able to finish their tasks.
    40. What’s the meaning of the underlined phrase “take the wheel” in Paragraph 3?
    A. Drive a car. B. Be hot active. C. Make a decision. D. Hide quietly.
    41. In the writer’s opinion, which of the following goes with the procrastinator’s system?
    A. The Rational Decision-Maker doesn’t work.
    B. The Instant Gratification Monkey hides for a long time.
    C. The Panic Monster never appears before the deadline.
    D. The Instant Gratification Monkey is on the right side.
    42. The procrastinator’s system sometimes doesn’t start work because ________.
    A. there is no Panic Monster in reality B. not everything in life has a deadline
    C. the Panic Monster is too lazy to work D. situations in real life are hard to control
    43. What is the writer’s suggestion for procrastination?
    A. Buy a calendar and use it often. B. Live a long enough life to put things off.
    C. Think about what we need. D. Make a plan and work out what’s really important.

My sister Alice and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette butts(烟头) for seven years. One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it "No Butts About It".
At first, we drew pictures with "The Earth is not your ashtray(烟灰缸)" written on them. We put the pictures around our hometown—in parks, on beaches, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts hurts the environment. Most smokers don5t think that dropping butts hurts the Earth. But it does, and all rubbish does!

When you want to raise money for others, one best way is to try to write a donation letter. A donation letter is what you write to a person you expect, who will donate some of his money to support your good cause (事项). Though the cause may be good, it is usually hard to make a person willing to donate some of his hard-earned money. It takes some really great writing skills to write such a letter.
The donation letter for charity isn5t exactly a formal letter for business communication. You need to take a casual tone(釆用一种随意的语气). Make sure that you know the name of the recipient (收信人)to sound more like a friendly gesture(姿态). Also, the language should not be quite serious and should be slightly informal, which can make your recipient willing to believe you.
Make sure that you include all the details about your program, your funds required, and your plan in the letter. The most important thing is to mention how someone gets to benefit (好处) because of the recipient's contribution. Talk about how many lives your charity fund has been able to change and how many more you wish to change Birther. This may touch the reader and take him into making a donation towards your cause. Include the amount which you expect the recipient to donate, within your letter.
A typical donation letter is often divided into four paragraphs. The first paragraph will be an introduction to your organization, like what you do, how long you have been running, and your achievements. The second paragraph will give more details about your current (现在的)goals that you're trying to reach. In the third paragraph you use a more direct method here, asking politely for any help. Keep it short and clear. The final paragraph is your conclusion, where you tell exactly how the help received would be put into good use. Add a “thank you^, for any and all help received.
39 The person who writes a donation letter wants to _____________.
    A. raise money for himself
    B. raise money for the recipient
    C. donate his own money to a charity
D ask the recipient to donate his money to a charity
    40. How should the language used in a donation letter be?
    A. Relaxing and persuasive (劝导性的). B. Happy and friendly.
    C. formal and honest. D. Short and clear.
    41. What is the key to encouraging a donation?
    A. Asking about the recipient's plan.
    B. Including all the details of people in need.
    C. Telling directly the amount of money you expect.
    D. Showing the value and importance of one's donation.
    42. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
    A. The skills used for writing business letters.
    B. The general content of a donation letter.
    C. The common problems in a donation.
    D. The tips on making a donation.
    43. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
    A. The amount of the needing money should be mentioned in a donation letter.
    B. It is usually not easy to make a person willing to donate his hard-earned money.
    C. The donation letter for charity is the same formal as that for business communication.
    D. A donation letter should tell the recipient how he can benefit if he gives a donation.
