At the age of thirteen, I told the whole class that I was going to write my own novels one day. It was the first time I shared my dream with others. But half the class didn’t pay any attention. The rest nearly fell out of their chairs laughing. I was so hurt that tears fell down my face. That night I wrote a short, sad poem about broken dreams. I mailed it to a local newspaper. Surprisingly, they published it and sent me two dollars. I showed my classmates the paper. They laughed and said, “Just luck. ” But the success I had tasted was more than the laugh had done to me. During the next four years, I sold lots of poems, jokes and plays. By the time I graduated from high school, my first novel had come out. And now I am a professional writer. My novels are popular among young adults. But I still keep the habit of reviewing my first poem when I am upset or meet unfair book reviews. It will always remind me how I started in the first place.

Imagine waking up at the age of six and discovering your family is missing! That’s what happened to young Charles Mulli in his Kenyan hut one morning. He soon realized he had been abandoned(抛弃) by his very poor parents and seven siblings!
The child was forced to become a street beggar in order to make a living. Living a poor and hopeless life, he still dreamed of being an important man someday.
When Mulli turned 16, he walked for three days to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, in search of work. In the years that followed, he tried many difficult jobs.
Mulli saved his money and bought a car, which he began using as a taxi in 1971. In time, he started a transportation service. The company, called “Mullyways,” became quite successful. Mulli then went on to become the owner of an oil company.
All of his hard work turned Mulli into a millionaire and an important man. Yet his life would soon take another dramatic turn.
Mulli was becoming painfully aware of the growing number of homeless children in Kenya. Their faces were a haunting reminder of his own childhood. One day Mulli told his wife and children that he was to devote his life to taking care of street kids.
Soon the Mulli House was filled with 100 orphans(孤儿), but that was just the beginning! In 1989, Mulli and his wife opened the Mulli Children’s Family (MCF). They provided children with food, clothes, medical care and an education. Most importantly, they offered something many of the kids had never experienced--parental love. In fact, the Mullis chose the name “Mully Children’s Family” because their emphasis was on providing a family.
So far, MCF has helped more than 12,000 children through its MCF homes and community-based centers.
In evaluating his life, Mulli once said, “I believe you can make a difference to the world, one child at a time. As a child, I wanted to be important, but where I am now is important for mankind.”

The Silk Road was a network of trade routes between China and Europe in the 10th century. Merchants carrying Chinese silk and other goods followed routes that crossed Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Far East.
Traveling the Silk Road could be gruelling. Warring soldiers, bandits, and terrible weather such as sandstorms troubled the merchants. Caravanserais made the way easier for weary tradesmen. These were huge guest houses that welcomed traveling merchants. At a caravanserai, traders were safe from harm. There, they could enjoy tasty meals, rest, and ready themselves to journey on.
A caravanserai was surrounded with high, strong walls. The one entrance was big enough for a loaded pack animal to enter. Along the inside of the walls were guest rooms for merchants, their servants and their goods. Some guest houses provided stables for animals. Others had open central courtyards where pack animals—horses, camels, yaks, oxen, and elephants—drank from stone water troughs.
Caravanserais were located within a day’s journey of each other. This allowed merchants to avoid spending nights exposed to the Silk Road’s dangers. In many regions, there was always a caravanserai every 20 to 25 miles.
A caravanserai provided more than a safe place to rest. There, traders could exchange goods and pack animals, buy local products, and socialize with other merchant travelers. Thus, the caravanserais provided places for people of different cultures to share knowledge about arts, crafts, literature, science, and technologies. Over hundreds of years, trade along the Silk Road allowed cultures, languages and religions to influence one another.
42.The underlined word “gruelling” probably means ________.
A.surprising B.convenient C.boring D.difficult
43.Merchants went to the Caravanserai mainly for ________.
A.feeding animals B.getting protection

B.Caravanserais were good places for people to communicate.
C.Merchants just carried Chinese silk to Europe on the Silk Road.
D.The Caravanserai’s entrance was too small for animals to enter.
