一、阅读理解
Unusual Libraries Around the World
There are 2.7 million libraries spreading across the globe, and while there are many beautiful ones, there are also a number of unique ones.
Haskell Free Library and Opera House, Quebec, Canada and Vermont, US
The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, a special library spanning two countries, is stationed on the border between Canada and the United States and serves people from both countries. The main entrance is on the American side, but the majority of collection of the books are in Canada. There's even an official American-Canada borderline running right across the library's floor.
Deichman Bjorvika, Oslo, Norway
Praised by many as a library of the future, the Deichman Bjorvika, city of Oslo's new main library, has one hundred unread and unpublished texts. They are stored in a specially designed room lined with wood from the forest, making the library the world's most secretive one. It witnesses different authors add their works to the collection that will not be available for reading until 2114.
Seashore Library, Qinhuangdao, China
Quietly sitting on an isolated(孤零零的) stretch of beach of Qinhuangdao in northern China, the Seashore Library has been called the world's loneliest library. People have to walk across the sand to reach the doors. The building is designed to promote people's connection with ocean, so the main reading room features a layered design to ensure that everyone has a good view of the sea.
Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt
Bibliotheca Alexandrina is considered as a revival(复兴) of an ancient library in the Alex-andria 2,300 years ago or so. Characterized by its circular, tilting form, the building spans160 meters in diameter(直径) and reaches up to 32 meters in height, while also diving some 12 meters into the ground.

A blind Chinese climber reached the summit(顶点) of Qomolangma, known in the West as Mount Everest, on Monday morning, becoming the first blind person from Asia ever to conquer the world’s highest summit.
Zhang Hong, 46, reached the top from the Nepali side, along with three high-altitude guides.
Zhang, who was born in Chongqing, lost his sight at the age of 21. He now works at Fukang Hospital Affiliated with Tibet University in Lhasa. As Zhang began his climb of Qomolangma, which is 8, 848. 86 meters above sea level, his colleagues in Lhasa were excited to hear the news of his success.
“Many people may have doubted his attempt of climbing at first, but I was confident in him from the beginning,’’ said Kyila, the secretary of the Fukang Angel Foundation, who also is a blind person. “I knew before that he could make it, and he did make it. I am really happy for him. He is a model for blind people to encourage them to chase their dreams.”
Zhang’s passion for climbing was inspired by Lotse, a famous Tibetan climber who conquered all the world’s 14 summits above the altitude of 8,000 meters. Lotse had shared the story of the blind US mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer, who climbed Qomolangma in May 2001. Zhang was touched by the story, which ignited his dream of climbing.
As an amateur climber for years, Zhang had conquered three mountains above the altitude of 6,000 meters before climbing the world’s highest summit. He had begun preparing for the Qomolangma climb in 2O19. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic(流行病), all mountaineering teams on Qomolangma were canceled in Nepal and China last year, and he had to wait until recently to finally make the attempt.

7、What’s the best title for the text?
A. Zhang Hong Sets an Example to Others
B. A Blind Climber Reaches Qomolangma Summit
C. Qomolangma Attracts More Chinese to Climb
D. A Chinese Climber Got Through the Pandemic
Searching Venus' sky
From the moon to Mars, scientists have been hunting for alien life in the solar system for decades. However, Venus was not regarded as an ideal place because of its hot temperature and dry atmosphere. But a recent discovery of traces of a gas in the clouds of Venus has excited astronomers, as it may serve as a potential sign of life.
On Sept 14, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada announced that scientists have detected phosphine(磷化氢) in the clouds of Venus. Phosphine is a colorless, toxic(有毒的) gas that has an odor of garlic. Though toxic, it is viewed as a possible sign of life because on Earth the gas is made by microorganisms that live in oxygen-free environments.
"I was very surprised—stunned, in fact," astronomer Jane Greaves of Cardiff University in Wales and lead author of the research, told MSN. "There is a chance that we have detected some kind of living organism in the clouds of Venus."
This layer of clouds is about 48 kilometers above the Venus surface, with its temperature ranging from 30 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (about -1 to 93℃).
Scientists have speculated that if life exists on Venus, this cloud deck(云盖) is likely the only place where it would survive.
Scientists went through every possibility that could have led to the formation of phosphine gas in Venus' clouds, including volcanoes, lightning strikes, small meteorites(陨石) falling into the atmosphere. But they ruled all of them out. It was concluded that there is no explanation for the existence of this gas in Venus' clouds, other than the presence of life. Although the detection of phosphine is not robust(强有力的) evidence for life, this finding is great enough to change scientists' view on Venus, which is thought to be a completely inhospitable planet.
What signs of life are we looking for?
Liquid water: It can dissolve a huge range of molecules needed for life and facilitate their chemical reactions.
Mild temperatures: Temperatures higher than 122℃ will destroy most complex organic molecules, and make it almost impossible for carbon-based life to form.
8、What is the text mainly about?
A. A newly detected gas may indicate possible existence of life on Venus.
B. Scientists found the most hospitable place on Venus.
C. The environment on Venue changed in favor of life.
D. Phosphine formed on Venus means alien life is present.
9、What can we learn about phosphine from the text?
A. It has no smell at all. B. It only exists on Venus.
C. It can be produced by microorganisms. D. It is a sign of the existence of oxygen.
10、What can we infer from paragraphs 5 and 6?
A. Various living organisms have been detected on Venus.
B. The higher the cloud is above Venus, the warmer it is.
C. The cloud deck is rich in phosphine.
D. If life exists on Venus, it is likely in the cloud deck.
11、What did scientists conclude about the phosphine gas detected on Venus?
A. It could be formed as a result of the falling of meteorites.
B. It could be a sign that there is life in Venus' clouds.
C. It could be caused by volcanoes and lighting strikes.
D. It proves that Venus is another hospitable planet.
Online classes began to be popularized just a few decades ago. They are advertised as a way for adults to finish their education and students to learn the material at their own pace—it is far more suitable for people with busy schedules.
But after being enrolled in an online course last fall semester, I came to realize online classes were merely a means to fulfil course requirements.
First of all, students lack the desire to learn, and they simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade rather than genuinely engage with the course material.
As online courses tend to have more than 100 students, most of the assignments are short and simple. They are not designed for students to interact with the material in depth but designed to be graded easily to accommodate such a large number of students.
Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of taking an online class is the absence of face-to-face interaction between the teacher and their students. Live sessions are infrequent and are often scheduled during the middle of the day when students have to attend other classes or work. The office hours of the professor may also be during inconvenient times for many students as well. Most interaction with the professor has to be through email which is often impersonal. It is nearly impossible for students to build a relationship with their professor.
There is also little interaction among students. It can be harder for students to create study groups and form relationships with their peers.
Online classes also require either a computer or laptop and a reliable Internet connection. Not all students have access to these types of resources, whether it is for financial or other reasons, and some students can be put at a disadvantage. Offering online classes certainly helps students who would otherwise not be able to attend classroom sessions. However, they fail to provide a true education with an emphasis on convenience rather than critical thinking. We need restructure online classes in which students can have a learning experience that will actually provide quality education.
12、What can we infer about students enrolled in online classes?
A. They are unmotivated to learn,
B. They can access course materials easily.
C. They rarely fulfil the course requirements.
D. They can learn at their own pace.
13、What is the author's opinion about online course assignments?
A. They are meant to facilitate interaction.
B. They are made convenient to mark.
C. They are given to accommodate students' needs.
D. They are based on easily accessible material.
14、From the passage, which is one disadvantage of online classes?
A. They make professors' offices much less accessible.
B. They are frequently scheduled at irregular times.
C. They provide little chance for students to build relationships with each other.
D. They tend to increase professors' burden of replying students' emails.
15、What problem may arise if classes go online?
A. Teachers will worry about poor Internet connections.
B. Most students may get critical thinking skills from it.
C. Schools with limited resources will be at a disadvantage.
D. Some students may have difficulty attending them.
