阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
It is often said that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” That is certainly true of the images of fleeting moments of nature submitted by international ecologists and students for the British Ecological Society’s (BES) annual photography competition. Here are a few of 2019’s winning entries.
Red Night
Photographed by Roberto Garcia Roa, it was declared last year’s overall winner. The image captures both the beauty of the magnificent snake and its fear of human threats like fires. The ecologist says, “During my visit to Madagascar, I had the pleasure of finding this snake and photographing it. To offer a dramatic scene reflecting the conditions that these snakes are suffering, I used an external red light as a source of light to capture the environment.”
The Rhino’s Annual Haircut
It was photographed by ecologist Molly Penny. The ongoing demand for rhino (犀牛) horns has reduced the population to just 30,000 globally. To try to save the species, ecologists in South Africa, home to over 20,000 southern white rhinos, have decided to saw off (锯掉) it part of the animals’ horns, which regrow every year. “The Rhino’s Annual Haircut,” captured beautifully in the black-and-white photo by Molly Penny from the University of the West of England, reduces the risk of the animals being cruelly murdered.
For the Love of Flamingos
Photographed by Peter Hudson, it captures a heart-shaped cloud of pink flamingos in Kenya, which is truly a sight like none other. The ecologist says, “Flamingos are all legs and necks but meanwhile beautiful and fascinating and I admit I have a deep passion for them, so I was thrilled when, flying high over Lake Magadi, I watched this flock from themselves into a heart shape.”.
Flames in Flumes
Photographed by Nilanjan Chatterjee, it captures a water redstart waiting to catch an insect near a small waterfall. It was the best overall student submission. The photographer wanted to show the struggle the river birds are likely to face from the slowdown in water flow due to planned dams in rivers across India.

A. The tips on saving an endangered rhino.
B. The cruelty of killing an endangered rhino.
C. The scene of taking part of a horn from a rhino.
D. The method of helping a rhino to grow a horn again.
38. Where was “For the Love of Flamingos” photographed?
A. In South Africa. B. In Kenya.

My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago. We have a yard a “rock garden”. There the rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry to finish. Very often when we have more flowers, Denise or I would plant them between the rocks, just to bring some color to the area.
Last summer I found, in the rock garden, a tiny little plant that I could not immediately recognize. I knew I didn’t plant it and Denise said she didn’t either. We decided to let it continue growing until we could find out what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange plant, it appeared to be a sunflower. It looked thin and tall with only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed (除草) around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower had not started where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
If a tiny little sunflower didn’t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have the ability to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach where we aim to go and get what we need for growth.
We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like the sunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it would succeed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what we are, then other things will begin to support us. We will find a way to go under or around any “rocks” in order to realize our goals.
41. The family planted flowers in the yard ________.
A. to attract visitors B. to remove the rocks
C. to please their neighbors D. to make the area colorful
42. The author let the tiny plant continue growing ________ .
A. to see how long it could live B. to see how big it could grow
C. to find out what it actually was D. to know if his wife had planted it
43. The author think the sunflower was unusual because ________.
A. it was very thin and tall B. it had only one head on it
C. it grew on top of a big rock D. it began to grow under a rock
44. We can conclude from the passage that ________.
A. rocks cannot prevent us from success
B. we can get over difficulties if we trust ourselves
C. we should take good care of the rock gardens
D. sunflowers are able to grow everywhere
45. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Stand Tall Like the Sunflower B. The Sunflower and My Family
C. Being Proud of the Sunflower D. The Secret of the Sunflower

Microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood for the first time, with scientists finding the tiny particles(微粒) in almost 80% of the people tested. The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may live in organs.
The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as microplastics cause damage to human cells in the laboratory and air pollution particles are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year.
Huge amounts of plastic waste are left in the environment and microplastics now pollute the entire planet, from the top of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. People were already known to consume the tiny particles via food and water as well as breathing them in, and they have been found in the faeces (排泄物) of babies and adults.
The scientists analysed blood samples from 22 healthy adults and found plastic particles in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made.
“Our study is the first indication that we have polymer particles(聚合物颗粒) in our blood — it’s a breakthrough result,” said Prof Dick Vethaak, an expert at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. “But we have to extend the research and increase the sample sizes, the number of polymers assessed, etc.” Further studies by a number of groups are already under way, he said.
“It is certainly reasonable to be concerned,” Vethaak said. “The particles are there and are transported throughout the body.” He said previous work had shown that microplastics were 10 times higher in the faeces of babies compared with adults and that babies fed with plastic bottles are taking millions of microplastic particles a day.
Vethaak acknowledged that the amount and type of plastic varied considerably between the blood samples. “But this is a pioneering study,” he said, with more work now needed. He said the differences might reflect short-term exposure before the blood samples were taken, such as drinking from a plastic-lined coffee cup, or wearing a plastic face mask.
“The big question is what is happening in our body?” Vethaak said. “Are the particles retained in the body? Are they transported to certain organs, such as getting past the blood-brain barrier? And are these levels sufficiently high to cause disease? We urgently need to fund further research so we can find out.”
46. What could be inferred from Paragraph 2?
A. Air Pollution particles can cause death eventually.
B. Microplastics can be deadly to humans.
C. There is no evidence that microplastics harm human cells.
D. Microplastics can travel throughout body and damage organs.
47. What can we learn about microplastics from Paragraph 4?
A. They are found in most people.
B. Polyethylene found in blood samples might be taken from drinks bottles.
C. A quarter of the blood samples contained PET particles.
D. Half of the microplastics in the blood samples were likely introduced by drinking from plastic containers.
48. According to Paragraph 5, what was Prof Dick Vethaak’s attitude towards their findings?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Excited. D. Depressed.
49. The underlined part “this is a pioneering study” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.
A. we are the pioneers in the field of plastic research
B. we need more blood examples and more work to do
C. we are entering a whole new field of research
D. this is an extremely important study
50. In which section of the newspaper may this article appear?
A. Political. B. Fashion. C. Food. D. Environment.

We are all born social and company to live happy and fruitful life. Healthy and supportive mutual relationships help reduce stress and promote the, physical, mental and emotional well-being by building skills like time management, assertiveness( 坚定自信), sociability and empathy.
Making friends has made me feel secure. However, I have to be cautious to pick up friends sharing similar tastes and values. In addition, having added to one’s circle of friends helps one feel supported.
It is true that finding time to cultivate relationships is all about effective time management. My busy uncle finds time to catch up with family and friends during his tea and lunch breaks. Similarly my friend Somya uses her time on her way back home from work in her chauffeur-driven car to catch up with people. The modern inventions of SMS and e-mail help send wishes for birthdays and anniversaries to show your love and care.
Assertiveness is as much applicable to relationships. My friend Mohana emphasizes that neither being a passive observer nor being aggressive helps relationships. It is assertiveness in our relationships that opens the lines of effective communication. It emphasizes helping friends in need and also strengthens mutually supportive relationships.
It is also true that assertiveness by intuition promotes discretion(自行决定权) of friends and helps Lalitha distinguish positive people from drains of energy. She can easily figure this out by the flow of the conversation, the way each feels understood, accepted and supported, and by how I feel, happy, bored or energized in the relationship. It also helps to know whether all benefit from each other’s positive aspects.
Handling stress in life is all about cultivating mutually supportive relationships and working on them. Manisha always says she feels great when sharing her feelings after a hard day with people who share similar ideas. Actually we all need someone who would not just hear us, but listen to us, and we need to cultivate the art of listening and understanding people.
51. A busy person can develop his social relationships by________.
A. inviting friends for dinner B. making friends with strangers
C. working hard for high positions D. getting together in the intervals of business
52. Which of the following helps build mutually supportive social relationships?
A. Being passive. B. Being assertive.
C. Being aggressive. D. Being relaxed.
53. A person most needs supportive social relationships when he/she is________.
A. lonely B. bored C. stressed D. energetic
54. From the passage, who can positively get supportive social relationship?
A. Manisha. B. Mohana. C. Lalitha. D. Somya.
55. What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A. How should we handle our stress in life?
B. What is to be done for applicable relationships?
C. How can we pick up friends supporting us?
D. How people build mutually supportive social relationship?

When I was seven years old, I saw my mother making doll clothes. She told me that they were for the poor people, so I never gave it another thought. On Christmas morning when I opened my present, there were those beautiful doll clothes. My mother just smiled and said, “They are for the poor people. We’re poor.”
When I was nine, my greatest desire in life was to own a pogo stick (弹簧高跷). But my mother told me that we simply couldn’t afford one. A few days before Christmas, my parents and I went shopping. While my mother and I were paying the money, my dad came with a long box. I remember wondering at that very moment if it was a pogo stick in that box. After we arrived back at home my dad put the box in the bam. While my parents were away, I shuck out to the barn to find the box. I was so excited and I knew that as soon as I opened that magical box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom. And so Christmas morning was disappointing. After all the wrapping paper was cleaned up, my dad came back from the barn with a beautiful pogo stick. I couldn’t believe it, how they were able to get the money for it and how they tricked me with the broom. My parents probably laughed quietly when they played the trick on me and I wondered if they were watching me from the window as I went out to the barn secretly for my Christmas present.
Although we didn’t have much money, my parents gave me the most important gift of all, much love. We had love and we had joy.
