    Text 1
W: Hi, Robert, what happened to your face?
M: I got a tooth filled yesterday. That hurt.
    Text 2
M: What newspaper are you reading?
W: New York Times. I read it every day. I dislike local newspapers because of their one-sided reporting.
    Text 3
W: Here is your bill, sir, 86 dollars in all. Cash or credit card?
M: Credit card, please. By the way, can I have my food packaged?
W: Sure. Wait for a minute.
    Text 4
M: I really don’t know how to tell this to you. Well...hum... you’re sure you won’t lose control of yourself?
W: Come on. Just tell the truth. Don’t beat around the bush.
M: We’ve won two free tickets to Hawaii for a seven-day vacation!!!
    Text 5
M: So what aspect do you like best?
W: Mainly the plot. It’s so full of twists and turns. I also like its music and the leading actress.
M: What do you think of the ending?
    W: It’s good, too.
    Text 6
M: Hi, Jenny. Jason here. It’s great to hear your voice again.
W: Hi, Jason. Long time no see. How is everything going?
M: Not so bad, you know. What about you? When are you leaving for Berkeley?
    W: In two weeks.
M: So soon. Well, I’d like to see you again before you leave. Would you like to go out with me on Friday? Dinner and maybe a movie or something afterwards.
W: Oh, I’m sorry, Jason. I’ve already got plans for Friday evening. How about Saturday? Or Sunday?
    M: Saturday’s fine. I’ll make a dinner reservation for 7 o’clock. Is that OK?
    W: Fine with me.
    Text 7
W: Good morning. I’m calling about the apartment you advertised online.
M: Morning, Madam. May I know when you need it?
W: Sometime around next week. What can you tell me about this apartment?
M: Well, it’s a one-bedroom apartment. The rent is £150 per week. Gas and water is included. Both the heat and stove are gas. You pay electricity only. Let me see... What else... Oh. You’ll be assigned a parking space at no extra charge. And... that’s probably it.
W: Sounds good. May I come over tomorrow to take a look?
M: Sure. How about 11 am?
W: Good. My name is Lucy.
M: Thanks for calling, Lucy. I’ll see you tomorrow.
    Text 8
M: Wow, look at the line behind us! It’s worse than I expected. We’re lucky we got here an hour early. Or else we would definitely have problems getting good seats.
W: Yes. I learned my lesson. Last time I didn’t arrive early enough and ended up with a terrible seat in the front row! Believe me, it was one of the worst movie experiences ever.
M: Yeah! I hate sitting in the front row, too.
W: By the way, it was really thoughtful of you to get this ticket for me. I really appreciate it. Why don’t I buy you some popcorn and a drink? What kind of soda do you want?
M: Let me see... I’ll take a large Coke. As for the popcorn, medium size will do. Thanks a lot.
W: I’d better get going. You hold my place and I’ll be back as quickly as possible. Oh, in case you get in before I get back, just save me a seat and I’ll meet you inside.
    M: Got it!
    Text 9
M: Hillary, it’s so good to have you in the studio. Tell us more about your company.
W: OK. We’re an online community, where we can have kids from all over the world on our platform to talk to each other about different topics that interest them. Right now we’ve got more than 40,000 downloads from more than 50 countries.
M: Wow. I mean you are not only the youngest CEO of this country, but also an inspirational public speaker. Do you get nervous on the stage?
W: Not at all if you get me talking or debating. But it will be another story if you get me to sing.
M: What made you start your company?
W: Well, actually I’m very interested in politics. And I think that being a politician is not the best way to change the world. But doing education is. And then I realized that connecting kids was something that can have a great effect on society. I was just like, “Let’s do it.”
M: Okay, Hillary, I’ve learned a lot from you. Thank you so much for coming today.
    Text10
In 1965, Millard and Linda Fuller decided to trade in their lives as millionaires for a simple life helping others. They made this decision after visiting a community-run farm, where everyone worked together and helped each other. The farm inspired the Fullers to help others, and in 1976 they founded Habitat for Humanity, a non-governmental organization that aims to build houses for poor people around the world. Habitat houses are built by volunteers, and the materials used to build the houses are donated. Because the Fullers believed that people should work to improve their own lives, those who receive a house must also help build their homes. In keeping with their belief that people should help themselves, the Fullers wanted to ensure that houses were not simply handed to people in need. Habitat houses are not free, but they are less expensive than other houses because the organization does not profit from them. Today there are volunteers all around the world. If you can join us, you will help Habitat for Humanity build hope around the world.

Betty Sandison was having lunch with some friends when the subject of wish lists came up. Although she had spent more than 30 years working as a registered nurse, Betty told her friends that she regretted never finishing the bachelor’s degree she’d started more than 67 years earlier.
Betty was the first person in her family to pursue higher education. With a dream of becoming a nurse, Betty enrolled at the University of Minnesota. But when she was just 25 credits short of getting her degree, for some reason, Betty dropped out of school and soon got married. Her career was put on hold as the couple moved around for her husband’s job, spending time living in different places.
Many years later, Betty returned to community college to become a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013.
But in 2018, she still felt regretful over her unfinished degree. Encouraged by her friends, Betty decided to return to university to complete her bachelor’s degree. She chose to live in the dormitory and got on well with her roommates. She enrolled in classes and started working on those last 25 credits. However, she was discouraged by the new technology used when taking online courses during the coronavirus pandemic. Even so, Betty persevered.
At age 84, Betty got her bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. She described the accomplishment as “pure joy, pure satisfaction”. Betty may even audit (旁听) college classes now that her degree is complete. She is not sure what’s next, but there’s one thing she does know: Life’s too short to live with regrets!
    24. Why didn’t Betty get her bachelor’s degree?
    A. Because she decided to marry her beloved one.
    B. Because she didn’t achieve the required credits.
    C. Because she dropped out of school to work as a nurse.
    D. Because she volunteered to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
    25. What made Betty less confident during her pursuit of her bachelor’s degree?
    A. The difficult courses. B. The new technology.

As a shift in the polar vortex (极地涡旋) swept across much of the US, many people in the country were hit with a sudden snap of cold. Heavy ice and snow coupled with fallen trees caused the outages in major cities, with companies unable to tell their customers when power will be restored.
Polar vortices were noticed long ago. But the first known use of the term “polar vortex” was in a magazine in 1853. Polar vortices are present year-round, but we don’t hear about them until they cause problems. They maintain freezing temperatures at the North and South poles by moving in tight counter-clockwise patterns. Polar vortices grow stronger in winter and weaken in summer. They are kept in place at the poles by another atmospheric current called the jet stream. However, when the jet streams weaken, the cold winds of the polar vortex are pushed southwards and it is during this time that people begin to pay attention!
In Texas, roads froze over, causing six traffic deaths, and many schools were shut-down. People are not the only Earthlings to struggle with the cold. Crops and animals are also freezing. This could have major consequences, especially if herds of cattle die. If snow blocks cattle, the animals can’t reach basic necessities like food and fresh water.
On a brighter note, some Texas cities were more prepared than others. For instance, Amarillo, which is located in North Texas, so they are more accustomed to colder temperatures. Amarillo is notable because the city was redesigned to stand up to severe winter storms. Officials have spread out fire stations to increase coverage of first responders, employed modified dump trucks for clearing ice, and upgraded civic centers to provide shelter during storms. Hopefully, other Texas cities will follow the good example set by Amarillo!
    28. What does the underlined word “outages” refer to?
    A. Traffic jams. B. Power struggles.
    C. Power cuts. D. Traffic accidents.
    29. What can we learn about polar vortices?
    A. They grow stronger in summer. B. They are affected by jet streams.
    C. They were first observed in 1853. D. They move in a clockwise direction.
    30. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about?
    A. The definition of the polar vortex. B. The characteristics of the polar vortex.
    C. The ways to deal with the polar vortex. D. The serious impact made by the polar vortex.
    31. Why is Amarillo striking?
    A. Because it is located in the north of Texas.
    B. Because it has been upgraded and modernized.
    C. Because it has been regarded as an example to other cities.
    D. Because it has taken effective measures to resist winter storms.
C 29. B 30. D 31. D
根据第一段最后一句中的“with companies unable to tell their customers when power will be restored(公司无法告知客户电力何时恢复)”可知,outages意为“断电”。故选C。
根据第二段最后两句“They are kept in place at the poles by another atmospheric current called the jet stream. However, when the jet streams weaken, the cold winds of the polar vortex are pushed southwards and it is during this time that people begin to pay attention!(它们被另一种被称为高速气流的大气流固定在两极。然而,当急流减弱时,极地涡旋的冷风被推向南方,正是在这段时间,人们开始注意!)”可知,极涡受到急流的影响。故选B。
30.主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“In Texas, roads froze over, causing six traffic deaths, and many schools were shut-down. People are not the only Earthlings to struggle with the cold. Crops and animals are also freezing. This could have major consequences, especially if herds of cattle die. If snow blocks cattle, the animals can’t reach basic necessities like food and fresh water.(在德克萨斯州,道路结冰,造成6人死亡,许多学校关闭。人类并不是地球上唯一与寒冷作斗争的生物。农作物和动物也在受冻。这可能会产生重大后果,特别是如果成群的牛死亡。如果大雪阻挡了牛群,这些动物就无法获得食物和淡水等基本必需品。)”可知,倒数第二段主要讲的是极地涡旋造成的严重影响。故选D。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段第三句“Amarillo is notable because the city was redesigned to stand up to severe winter storms.(阿马里洛之所以引人注目,是因为这座城市经过了重新设计,以抵御严重的冬季风暴。)”

On a sunny day last August, Daniel Malechuk opened the door to a 77,000-square-foot warehouse just outside Atlanta. Inside, under the soft glow of LED lights, grew five varieties of hydroponic (水培的) lettuce with nine levels high. A handful of employees were busy harvesting the greens. Their pace matched Malechuk’s ambition: to grow 10 million heads of lettuce by next spring.
If they succeed, Kalera, the vertical farming company that began operations here in April 2021, will not only have the largest-yield vertical (垂直的) farm in the Southeast, but will also be Georgia’s largest lettuce producer.
“This facility will produce 12 times as much lettuce in one year as the entire state can produce in the same amount of time,”Malechuk said. These farms, not dependent on specific weather patterns, can grow almost anywhere, cutting down transportation costs and associated emissions. And importantly, they operate more cleanly, without producing runoff from fertilizers or pesticides.
Malechuk, of Kalera farms, has said making his greens affordable is a top priority and that a head of Kalera lettuce sells for less than $3 in most stores. But there’s a catch: indoor farms rely on the artificial light of tens of thousands of LED lights. Add to that the energy needed for climate control, water circulation and other operations, and a farm like Malechuk’s can consume massive amounts of energy.
“The single largest challenge facing the industry is that it uses a huge amount of electricity,” said Julia Kurnik, director of innovation startups at the World Wildlife Fund. She said vertical farming involves a series of economic and environmental trade-offs (权衡). “It may not make sense everywhere, but if you’re in, say, the Middle East and you don’t have much land, but you can use renewable energy to power your farm, this may be a huge boon (益处).” She said the source of the energy is crucial to determining the net environmental impact.
Lowering vertical farms’ energy costs is one of the main goals at Signify, a Dutch LED lighting company, said Udo van Slooten, CEO of the Signify.
    32. What may be a key factor for indoor farming?
    A. Weather. B. Location.
    C. Energy. D. Transportation.
    33. What is an important goal of Malechuk?
    A. To lower the electricity costs.
    BTo make his greens cheaper.
    C. To become the largest lettuce producer.
    D. To protect the environment of the country.
    34. What is Julia Kurnik’s attitude to the vertical farming?
    A. Supportive. B. Objective.
    C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
    35. Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. Vertical Farms Are Finally Branching Out
    B. Kalera Succeeded in Growing Lettuce Indoors
    C. New Technologies Are Being Applied in Agriculture
    D. The Largest Challenge Facing Vertical Farming
C33. B34. B35. A
根据文章的第四段“But there’s a catch: indoor farms rely on the artificial light of tens of thousands of LED lights. Add to that the energy needed for climate control, water circulation and other operations, and a farm like Malechuk’s can consume massive amounts of energy. (但有一个问题:室内农场依赖于数万盏LED灯的人造光。再加上气候控制、水循环和其他运作所需的能源,像马丘克这样的农场会消耗大量的能源)”,第五段第一句“‘The single largest challenge facing the industry is that it uses a huge amount of electricity,” said Julia Kurnik, director of innovation startups at the World Wildlife Fund. (世界自然基金会创新创业总监茱莉亚·库尔尼克说:‘该行业面临的最大挑战是它使用了大量的电力,’)”,以及第五段最后一句“She said the source of the energy is crucial to determining the net environmental impact.
根据文章的第四段“Malechuk, of Kalera farms, has said making his greens affordable is a top priority and that a head of Kalera lettuce sells for less than $3 in most stores. (Kalera农场的Malechuk说,让人们买得起绿叶蔬菜是他的首要任务,在大多数商店里,一棵Kalera生菜的售价不到3美元。)”可知,Malechuk 的一个重要目标是使他的蔬菜能让大家买得起,即通过发展垂直农业,使蔬菜不再那么贵,故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据文章的第五段“‘The single largest challenge facing the industry is that it uses a huge amount of electricity,’ said Julia Kurnik, director of innovation startups at the World Wildlife Fund. She said vertical farming involves a series of economic and environmental trade-offs (权衡). ‘It may not make sense everywhere, but if you’re in, say, the Middle East and you don’t have much land, but you can use renewable energy to power your farm, this may be a huge boon (益处).’ She said the source of the energy is crucial to determining the net environmental impact.
通读全文,尤其是第一段“On a sunny day last August, Daniel Malechuk opened the door to a 77,000-square-foot warehouse just outside Atlanta. (去年8月,在一个阳光明媚的日子里,丹尼尔·马勒查克打开了亚特兰大郊外一个占地7.7万平方英尺的仓库的大门。)”,第二段“If they succeed, Kalera, the vertical farming company that began operations here in April 2021, will not only have the largest-yield vertical (垂直的) farm in the Southeast, but will also be Georgia’s largest lettuce producer. (如果他们成功了,2021年4月开始在这里运营的垂直农业公司Kalera不仅将拥有东南部产量最大的垂直农场,还将成为乔治亚州最大的生菜生产商)”可知,本文通过丹尼尔·马勒查克经营的垂直农业公司切入本文话题,介绍了垂直农业的优势,以及面临的最大的挑战,A项“Vertical Farms Are Finally Branching Out (垂直农场终于开始扩张)”与本文大意贴合,适合作本文的标题。故选A项。

    The Joy of Giving
Someone once said, “To help the poor is to help yourself.” Perhaps, that person meant that helping those in need will later result in internal satisfaction. I usually never do community service before, but when I heard the opportunity to join my school’s service club, Interact, I put up my hand without hesitation. The opportunity to help people in need excited me and as I signed up to attend Saint Mary’s Food Bank, the urge of helping people made my body tremble.
As I walked after school to Mrs. Green, I could feel the palms(手掌)of my hands becoming wet by the minute. The water of my nerves ran down the side of my head and I could feel the tip of my shirt soaking(湿透)with fresh sweat. The clock ticked and I could feel the time of going to Saint Mary’s Food Bank getting closer. Ten minutes later the bus arrived-and we were on our way to the bank. On the way many things came through my mind. What was it going to look like? Will there be homeless people there, and will I enjoy my experience?
As I continued to explore my mind, the bus came to a stop.“We’re here,” said loudly the bus driver. I could feel the palms of my hands beginning to moisturize(变潮湿)once again. As I got off the bus, I fell into a deep doubt. This was the food bank? I had never seen anything like it. To my amazement, it reminded me of a place I would go in Mexico to feed the poor. It was brown, wide and had an old look to it. As we entered the bank as a group, the essence of it was very comfortable. I felt like I was home. Finally my nerves were gone, and I was ready to work. Before we started working, we were given instructions. But as soon as we finished our tour of instructions, the duty of service began.

Community service can bring out the best of everyone.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    One possible version:
We were all divided into groups and given a specific job. I was assigned to place beans into a box. As a group we worked fast, the boxes would move and move so fast that sometimes I would have to ask for help. The warm-hearted workmates encouraged me to make every effort. Although I might have broken a nail, the feeling of knowing that I was doing something for someone out there made me fulfilled. And I realized that the true meaning of community service was making a difference in someone’s life.
Community service can bring out the best of everyone. It provides the feeling of accomplishment and internal satisfaction. My parents and grandparents always tell me, “It is better to give, than to receive.” These quotes are true. I thought they were just saying it, until I finally realized that it made sense. I told my family the experience about community service after getting home. They were all proud of me and encouraged me to continue it in the following days. Some of my friends also joined the schools service club because of my influence.
