Off the slopes, visitors can explore the town's unique Victorian buildings with New England charm. The Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center makes for an excellent rest-day diversion.

    Stowe, Vermont.

Steepled churches and clapboard houses make Stowe a typical New England ski town, complete with excellent options for all kinds of skiers. While there are plenty of fine dining establishments and luxury resorts catering to well-heeled travelers, there's a lively après scene as well, especially at The Matterhorn. To really know a country, you need to understand its culture and history.

That was why journalist and media expert Zhang Ciyun began his work on a six-volume exploration of ancient Chinese wisdom as reflected in myths, classics works, idioms, paintings, historical figures and architecture.

The English-language edition of the book series was unveiled at last week's Shanghai Book Fair. The series caters for an increasing number of foreign readers who are deeply interested in traditional Chinese culture.

“The idea of the book series came to me nearly three decades ago, when I discovered how little foreigners knew about Chinese culture", Zhang said. "Oh, they knew about kung fu movies, the Great Wall and the terracotta warriors, and had vague impressions of Chinese emperors. But they wanted to know more about Chinese culture.”

Zhang, a founder and former editor-in-chief of the English-language Shanghai Daily, is fluent in English. He draws on that skill to tell the stories of ancient China in the everyday language and experiences of native English speakers.

Zhang said ancient culture has had a far-reaching impact on the behavior and thinking of contemporary Chinese, and gives foreign readers insight into modern-day China.

He recalled a Shanghai Daily survey of readers that showed foreigners had great curiosity about Chinese culture. But at that time, books that might help them explore deeper into that culture were pieces scattered 散布over different publications. There were no books in English providing easy access to Chinese history and culture.

“As a journalist working for an English-language newspaper, I really wanted to do something to meet that need," he said. "I decided to use my writing skills to tell ancient stories about Chinese culture, especially its traditional aspects."

He began his project in about 1993, beginning with a series of articles explaining the stories behind Chinese idioms. His first works were compiled into one book, which received positive feedback and was later translated into German and other foreign languages.

    24. What can we learn about Zhang Ciyun's books?

    A. They involve various Chinese culture forms.

    B. They have been translated into German.

    C. They were not well received at first.

    D. They were accomplished in 1993.

    25. Why did Zhang write the book series?

    A. To record ancient Chinese wisdom. B. To spread Chinese culture.

    C. To pursue fame and interests. D. To promote Shanghai Daily.

    26. What can be inferred about foreigners' learning Chinese culture in the past?

    A. No English books about Chinese ancient culture were available.

    B. Foreigners showed little interest in learning about Chinese culture.

    C. It was not convenient for foreigners to learn about Chinese culture.

    D. English books on Chinese culture were published in large numbers.

    27. Which of the following best describes Zhang?

    A. Famous and humorous. B. Creative and responsible.

    C. Ambitious but unlucky. D. Wise but conservative.

    C

When it comes to gifts of affection, flowers are a classic choice. But of all the flowers given on Valentine's Day in America, none are as popular as the red rose. However, before you hit the nearest flower shop for a bunch of roses, find out how the tradition of giving roses for Valentine's Day started.

The tradition of giving roses for Valentine's Day has several origin stories, and like the history of Valentine's Day, it's rooted in Greek mythology. Some stories say that the first red rose was created when Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, was scratched by a white rose's thorn ($!]), causing that rose to turn red, while others say that the first red rose grew on the ground where Aphrodite's lover died and the goddess's tears fell.

But according to Sara Cleto, a famous folklorist (民俗学家)in America, an important reason why giving roses for Valentine's Day has persisted as a tradition is that roses are beautiful, fabulous-smelling flowers that happen to travel really well. ''Flowers are usually shipped over long distances, and roses are both gorgeous and hardy, so that's a huge part of why this practice has continued/5 says Cleto. And as for red roses, they are the best choice for Valentine's Day just because the color is associated with passion and romantic love.

Recently, while COVID-19 related lockdown aroused a love of houseplants in Americans across the country, plants haven't replaced roses as Valentine's Day gifts. "Red roses are still the most popular stem on Valentine's Day,“ says Sandra Varley, who has more than a decade of experience of selling flowers. "The younger you are, the more likely you are to buy red roses. Mixed-stem bunches in hot pinks are becoming more popular. However, nothing quite says love like a red, red rose.”

Of course, Valentine's Day roses aren't strictly for expressing romantic love. If you want to go with something that signifies friendship, skip the red and go straight for yellow roses. 28. What can we learn about the origin of the tradition of giving roses for Valentine's Day?

    A. It is related to a travelling story.

    B. It was created by American people.

    C. It was started in honor of two lovers.

    D. There is no exact explanation about it.

    29. Why does the practice of giving roses for Valentine's Day last so long?

    A. They're considered the most beautiful flowers in the world.

    B. They're gorgeous and able to stand long distance travel.

    C. They look and smell better than any other flower.

    D. They stand for passion and romantic love.

    30. Why is the love of houseplants in Paragraph 4 mentioned?

    A. To illustrate the popularity of roses.

    B. To prove how deep people love plants.

    C. To show the impacts of COVID-19 virus.

    D. To suggest replacing roses with other flowers.

    31. What is the text mainly about?

    A. The tradition of giving roses on Valentine's Day.

    B. Popular legends about the origin of giving roses.

    C. Some ways to celebrate Valentine's Day.

    D. Experts' suggestions on choosing roses.

A routine dentist's tool may help with more than just oral health. A new study has found that dental imaging scanners can serve as portable devices to track the growth of baby corals 珊瑚虫---a crucial predictor of how reefs will fare 生长during climate change.

Heat stress can kill mature coral reefs and curtail their regrowth. "Growth, reproduction and survival are the main things that we're always looking at in terms of how healthy reefs are," says marine biologist Kate Quigley of the Australian Institute of Marine Science. By modeling baby corals in 3-D, researchers can track how well they branch, develop complex shapes and reach reproducing size. If harsh water conditions make corals grow too slowly, a reef won't recover.

Corals this small are difficult to model in 3-D; researchers can CT scan them, dip them in wax or laboriously put the measurements together from a commercial 3-D scanner - but these methods can be slow and provide lower-resolution views. So one day, as Quigley's dentist used a scanning device that focused light to create a detailed 3-D tooth model, Quigley got an idea. If this device could examine the teeth in detail, she thought, it should be able to scan tiny living corals, too both teeth and coral are calcium-based and wet.

For a study published in Methods in Ecology and Evolution, Quigley tested the scanning device and found that it offered a cheap, easy and portable way to model baby corals significantly faster and at higher resolution than currently available techniques. This tool could let scientists more easily examine how coral species endure stress.

“Baby corals are critical for reef restoration and recovery from disturbances like hurricanes and heat waves. Unfortunately, they are the stages we know least about because they are so difficult to measure accurately without great expense,"  says Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology researcher Joshua Madin, who was not involved in the study. "This paper is a great example of taking a mature technology developed in another field and applying it to coral reef science.”

    32. Why is it important to study the baby corals?

    A. It helps to reduce heat stress.

    B. It helps to protect the coral reefs.

    C. It helps to prevent climate change.

    D. It helps to improve the marine environment.

    33. What does the underlined word “curtail" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. Guide. B. Aid. C. Limit. D. Follow.

    34. What makes it possible to use dental scanning device to scan the corals?

    A. The low price of the scanning devices.

    B. The similarity between corals and teeth.

    C. The excellent skills of the dentists and scientists.

    D. The assistance of other technologies such as CT scanning.

    35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A. Improving Scanning Technology

    B. Fighting Against Climate Change

    C. Saving Coral Reefs with Dental Tech

    D. Protecting Marine Life with Advanced Scanners

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。

Fake news spreads rapidly, especially on social media. As students progress in their education, they need to be able to distinguish fake news stories from true, fact-checked journalism. 36

Check the history and reputation of the author and publication

Most fake news sites have just existed for a short time. 37 If it's sharing a popular article disgracing a politician running for office in 2020, for example, but the website itself is newly-created, it's likely that the article and site are not trustworthy.

    38

When a big news event occurs, multiple media organizations will report it. Search for other publications that have posted stories about the news. If no other news outlets are reporting the story, it's probably a fake.

    Be cautious about sensational 耸人听闻的headlines

Fake news is designed to strike an immediate emotional chord in audiences by using an alarming headline. Often people share such a story based merely on the headline. 39 If a headline seems ridiculous, or simply lacks the ring of truth, search for reliable sources that confirm the accuracy of the story.

Carefully examine photos and other media accompanying the stories

40 If you see a shocking or particularly engaging photo or video in an article, take a moment to determine whether it is intended only to arouse an emotional reaction in readers. Use a service such as TinEye to find where else it appears. Often, there is an original version that tells a different story.

    A. They even haven't read the article itself.

    B. Here's our advice on how to spot a fake.

    C. Compare the news with some other big news.

    D. Determine whether other media are reporting the same news.

    E. Fake news providers often use eye-catching photos or videos.

    F. Photos and videos used in news are usually very beautiful and attractive.

    G. You can find out that by entering its address in the Domain Age Checker.

    第二节(10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15)

    阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Winter is here! Are you also wondering how that happened so quickly? If you are now experiencing the 61 (pleasant) effects of little sunlight, you are not alone.

Many people's mood goes slightly down as the days are getting shorter. Even if you don't suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), 62 is also called winter depression, you might feel different than just a few weeks ago.

Does that sound familiar? If so, I hear you and a possible solution can 63 (recommend) to you! That is --- laughter!

As Mirthy's Laughter Yoga Leader, I 64 (strong) believe in the health benefits of laughter, which are indeed impressive. The most obvious gain is that 65 puts people in a good mood. After 66 (assess) mood levels before and after the Laughter Yoga session, we find many participants' mood goes up by at least two points - and that's without drugs or pills, just by “a little bit" of laughter.

Dr Madan Katana, who is a medical doctor and created Laughter Yoga, 67 (do) quite a bit of research and found that laughter is a mild antidepressant (抗抑郁药)as it releases endorphins and serotonin. What's more, laughter can be 68 natural pain killer - and without side effects.

Laughter is also a great stress relief and reduces the levels of stress hormones in our bodies. If you keep in mind that almost 90% of all illnesses are associated with stress and tension 69 (hold) in our body, laughter is an easy remedy, isn't it? So there is some 70 (true) in the old saying: "Laughter is the best medicine." well, at least it's a start!
