Your Local Caff (小餐馆)
Remember when cafés served full English breakfasts—sausages, beans, fried bread, bacon and eggs—with a strong cup of tea? Well, this place still does and you can have your breakfast at any time you like during the day while you listen to your favourite tunes from the 1980s.

A centrally located Indian restaurant, perfect for eating before or after the cinema or a show. In summer enjoy your meal in the beautiful garden. The most popular dishes are lamb and chicken cooked with mild, medium or hot spices. For brave customers there is extra hot!

When Ryad Alsous arrived in England, he knew one thing: he wanted to keep bees. The insects had been a major part of his life in Syria, and fleeing his war-torn homeland, it was a precious certainty amid so much chaos(混乱).
As a lecturer at the University of Damascus, Ryad had built a respected reputation for his research on Syrian bees. With over 500 hives(蜂房), he produced over ten tons of honey every year. Fleeing his country in 2013, he lost everything.
Yet even with all his knowledge and experience, Ryad didn’t know if his dream would be possible in the UK. “I found that there is a lot of rain and the temperature isn’t very high. All the time I was thinking. How can I set up another project here?”
The wet weather wasn’t Ryad’s only challenge. The language barrier and a vastly overqualified CV made it difficult to find work. Eventually, Ryad volunteered at the Huddersfield Beekeepers’ Association, but he was still without a colony(蜂群) of his own. Finally, Facebook brought him into contact with a woman in Manchester who was willing to donate an entire colony of rare British black bees.
“In one year, I was able to split the colony she gave me into seven. I realised that the beekeeping project could become very profitable and successful in the UK. ”
Soon, Ryad found himself with 17 hives, but he wasn’t finished yet. His inner teacher was itching to get out. Through City of Sanctuary, a British refugee charity(难民慈善机构), Ryad began to run beekeeping workshops for refugees and job seekers. The Buzz Project was born.
Today, the Buzz Project houses 14 hives, where Ryad shares his expertise(专长). It has started to bear fruit. Last year, they produced half a ton of honey(around 1, 000 jars). But for Ryad, the most important thing is bringing people together.
“We have local people, jobseekers and volunteers, in addition to refugees. All of them work together doing the same job. The exchange between the groups, the information and skills, helps them integrate very well and improve their language skills,” he says.
24、Why did Ryad come to England?
A. To keep bees. B. To do research.
C. To seek shelter. D. To run business.
25、Which factor posed a challenge to Ryad at first?
A. The hot weather. B. His poor English.
C. His inadequate qualification. D. The cultural differences.
26、What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. He wanted to share his beekeeping skills.
B. He decided to establish a beekeeping school.
C. He wanted to expand his business.
D. He decided to find a teaching job.
27、Which of the following can best describe Ryad’s character?
A. Persistent and charitable. B. Ambitious and reliable.
C. Cautious and responsible. D. Independent and respectable.
Mount Qomolangma, meaning “Holy Mother” in Tibetan, is the world’s highest mountain above sea level. No wonder most people consider climbing to its top as one of their biggest achievements. More than 4, 000 climbers, ranging from 13 to 80 years old, have managed to reach the top. Three people from the Sherpa community hold the current record at 21 times each!
You may be surprised at these numbers but that’s just the start of it. Last year, cleanup crews collected as much as 8. 4 tons of garbage from Mount Qomolangma’s North Base Camp in Tibet at 5,150 meters. And in the regions below that level, more than 335 tons of waste was collected. What a sad fact it is that the highest mountain in the world is turning into the highest mountain of trash!
To reverse the trend, the Chinese government recently announced that it had closed the North Base Camp to tourists. From now on, ordinary tourists will only be able to travel as far as Rongbuk Monastery, about 5, 000 meters above sea level. No more than 300 climbers with special permits will be allowed to climb Qomolangma each year. They are supposed to follow stricter rules, including carrying all their waste out with them and only climbing in spring.
Despite these tough measures, it is clear that tourism has caused enormous damage to the natural environment. Mount Qomolangma is not alone. Some popular parks around the world are also struggling to preserve their environments and keep up with increased tourism. Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. has long been troubled by the overflowing trash piles. Joshua Tree National Park suffered a wave of vandalism(破坏), with graffiti(涂鸦) sprayed on rocks and ancient trees destroyed. In order to protect the environment, the National Park Service had no choice but to close the park temporarily.
As we can see, the natural environment can be destroyed by human activities in less than five minutes, but it might take hundreds of years to recover. Now it’s time for ordinary tourists to leave “Holy Mother” alone and wait for her to restore her beauty.
28、Why are the figures listed about Qomolangma in paragraph 2?
A.To describe it is extremely vast and high.
B.To show it is difficult to collect trash there.
C.To indicate it is a popular tourist attraction.
D.To illustrate it is suffering serious pollution.
29、What does the underlined word “reverse” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Fit with. B.Follow up. C.Turn around. D.Speed up.
30、What is the author likely to support to protect Qomolangma?
A.Developing its tourism. B.Reducing human activities.
C.Forbidding any entry in spring. D.Building more base camps.
31、Which section of a newspaper might this article come from?
A.Environment. B.Society. C.Tourism. D.Education.
The average bear, it seems, is getting ever smarter. First, it turned out that at least one can use a comb. Now it appears that some can count, too.
Jennifer Vonk, from Oakland University, in Michigan, and Michael Beran, from Georgia State University, set three American black bears the task of distinguishing between numerically larger and smaller groups of dots(点) on a computer screen. In return for a food reward one bear, Brutus, would touch the more heavily dotted pattern with his nose. The others, Bella and Dusty, would touch the screen with their claws.
As the researchers report in Animal Behavior, the bears did best with patterns where the colored dots did not move and where more of them also took up a larger colored area. This could be explained by the bears' distinguishing the different areas of color rather than truly counting the dots. However, the three bears managed to pick out the bigger number of dots even in pairs of patterns where fewer dots took up a larger area.
Moving patterns, where each dot followed its own path around the screen, were more of a challenge. But Brutus, at least, was not defeated. He seemed to be counting mobile dots even when the scientists tried to mislead him by moving the total colored area of the dots at the same time.
It is not entirely surprising that bears should have a high degree of intelligence. They face a lot of challenges when trying to get food. They are, however, always alone, and so do not have the complex social systems that contribute to animal smarts. Perhaps, then, their maths skill developed because they cannot count on their friends for help.
32、What task did the scientists set for the three bears?
A.Distinguishing different dot patterns.
B.Figuring out different colors of dots.
C.Putting the dots into differently colored groups.
D.Picking out the group with a larger number of dots.
33、For the bears, the task was easier when _____.
A.the colored dots were moving slowly B.the dot patterns were regular in shape
C.the dots followed a path on the screen D.more dots covered a larger colored area
34、What may explain the bears' high degree of intelligence?
A.They learn skills from other animals. B.They face life challenges on their own.
C.They feed on a diverse range of food. D.They have complex social networks.
35、What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Bears Taught to Distinguish Colors B.New Evidence of Bear Intelligence Found
C.Three Bears Learned How to Count D.The Smartest American Black Bear Brutus

13、答案:C
解析:W: We’re talking with Yang Wei, who just returned home to China after living in San Francisco for one year. What would you say is the biggest difference between your life in America and your life in China?
M: I guess the most obvious one would be the food culture. In Beijing, people eat out a lot, and people tend to be much more loud and outgoing in restaurants. For example, in China, it is common to see people drinking and talking loudly in the middle of a restaurant. In America, however, people like to enjoy a quiet meal. If you are too loud, the waiter might come over to your table and remind you to keep it down, and they would certainly not serve you drink if you appeared drunk.
W: What about the variety of food?
M: This is where America might have the advantage. Although Chinese food is unbelievably varied, I would have to say that the quality of food from all over the world is better in the States. While there are many Africans, Europeans, and North Americans in China, there are even fewer people from the Middle East, South America, and the Caribbean. As a result, it is harder to find really good food from those areas. But America has always been a country of immigrants (移民), so this is one area in which it just might be No.1 in the world.
W: Interestingly. Why don’t we take some questions from the audience?

解析:Hello, everyone. I’m an engineer from Apple. It’s my great honor to be here to share my knowledge with so many international scientists and business owners. I’m grateful for your coming. I’ve spent my entire career trying to advance the quality of artificial intelligence, or AI for short. But back in college, I majored in marketing and had absolutely no idea of AI at all. So how did I start my career in this field? Apple’s Siri was the first application of AI that I had ever known. From that invention, I knew AI would change the world one day. I then put my heart and efforts into it. That was 10 years ago. Luckily, it turns out that I have made the right choice. Now the industry has made much progress and is playing an increasingly important role in people’s life. The public nowadays feels excited about its development. AI frees them from boring and low-skilled tasks, making life a lot easier and more enjoyable. But I feel that we are still in the early days of AI. We are viewing current AI technology as we viewed computers in the 1990s. There is still a long way to go.
