    2022·北京平谷·统考二模)

Did you know that some people don’t do their reading assignments? It’s shocking, but it’s true. Some students don’t even read short texts that they are assigned (布置) in class. There are many reasons for this. They may be distracted or bored. They may be unwilling to focus. They may be unconfident readers. Whatever the reason, it has to stop today. Here’s why.

Reading stimulates (刺激) your mind. It is like a workout for your brain. When people are old, their muscles begin to get weaker and their strength leaves them. Exercise can prevent this loss. The same thing happens to people’s brains when they get older. Brain power and speed decline with age. Reading strengthens your brain and prevents these declines.

You can benefit from reading in the near-term too. Reading provides knowledge. Knowledge is power. Therefore, reading can make you a more powerful person. You can learn to do new things by reading. Do you want to make video games? Do you want to design clothing? Reading can teach you all this and more. But you have to get good at reading, and the only way to get good at something is to practice.

Read everything that you can at school, regardless of whether you find it interesting. Reading expands your vocabulary. Even a “boring” text can teach you new words. Having a larger vocabulary will help you better express yourself. You will be able to speak, write, and think more intelligently. What’s boring about that?

Do not just discount pay attention to a text because it is unfamiliar (不熟悉的) to you. Each time you read, you are exposed to new ideas and perspectives (视角). Reading can change the way that you understand the world. It can give you a wider perspective on things. It can make you worldlier. You can learn how people live in far away places. You can learn about cultures different from your own.

Reading is good for your state of mind. It has a calming effect. It can lower your stress levels and help you relax. You can escape from your troubles for a moment when you read, and it’s a positive escape. So do yourself a favor: the next time you get a reading assignment, take as much as you can from it. Squeeze it for every drop of knowledge that it has. Then move on to the next one.

4The writer advises you to read everything at school because ________.

Ayou will love it if you read it enough

Byou will get better grades in reading class

Cyou will make your teacher very happy

Dyou will learn more new words

5The writer probably agrees that ________.

Ayou should pay more attention to the familiar text

Byou will feel bored after you think more intelligently

Creading helps you perform on tests and get into top schools

Dreading widens your perspective and makes you a better person

6Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

AReading: Good for the Mind in Many Ways

BReading: The Key to a Successful Future

CReading: Improve Your Vocabulary and Grades

DReading: The Best Way to Improve Your Writing Skills

2022·北京石景山·统考二模)Many cultures have stories of talking trees that give advice as well as warnings to people.

New research has found something amazing: it appears that plants can communicate after all.

It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals(化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant, say a bean plant, gets attacked by insects(昆虫). The plant sends out a small number of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another bean plant discovers this, it starts to send out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract insects—the wasps! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the bean plants. Scientists hope to learn more about his plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow crops in a better way.

More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots(). They also “listen” to the noises from other plants. A chilli plant can tell if a neighbouring plant is helpful, or unfriendly. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.

Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can connect nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. The wood wide web is connected underground by fungi(菌类). This fungi network connects the roots of different plants to each other. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. But just like our own Internet, the wood wide web has its own problems. Plants can steal food from each other, or attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks.

Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Who knows? Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.

7What do bean plants probably do when they get attacked by insects?

AThey make noises with their leaves.

BThey drive wasps to kill the insects.

CThey give out chemicals to call for help.

DThey fight back directly with other bean plants.

8What do we know about the “wood wide web”?

AIt has its own firewall to stop attacks.

BIt shares information with insects often.

CIt is a bit like the Internet we use today.

DIt produces food through fungi and roots.

9What could be the best title of the passage?

    AThe Secret Language of Plants

    BThe Benefits of Plants’ Talking

CWhy do Plants Talk with Each Other?

Ah Nao is a “furry” (兽迷). At Super Furry Fusion, the biggest furry party in China, Ah Nao dressed up in an animal suit, performed on stage, met friends and played games. “It was the happiest time I’ve ever had,” he told TMPost.

Furries are fans of animal characters from movies, books and video games. They enjoy wearing animal costumes and role-playing. They also draw or write furry artwork and stories. “People are like families in this community and we can really be ourselves here.” said Ah Nao.

Many young people, especially those born after the year 2000, have created all kinds of similar communities based on niche (小众的) interests, These can include hanfu, voice acting, and even pen spinning.

Hui, another young person born after 2000, is the head of a community called “Home to Pen Spinners”. In this community, people share videos of their performances and learn more difficult tricks from each other. Earlier this year, Hui led two Chinese teams to the sixth Pen Spinning World Cup. Sixteen teams from 11 countries, including the US, Japan and France, took part. The Chinese teams won sixth and seventh places.

“Young people have a strong need to build their identity (身份认同感). In these communities they can have a sense of belonging and find better ways to express themselves.” wrote Yu Tao, a PhD in cultural studies at Heilongjiang University.

“People group together based not on birthplaces, family background or any other factors, but simply on the same interests.” Yu wrote. As Chi Benben, another furry, told TMPost, “The circle welcomes everyone. Some furries feel inferior (自卑的) in day. to-day life, perhaps because they are fat or disabled in some way. But they can all make friends and have fun here.”

    10What do “furries” do?

2022·北京石景山·统考二模)As digital devices (数字设备) have taken over society, keyboard activity is now often taken to replace early handwriting. The idea is that typing may be easier for young children. But a new study has found that using a pen or pencil activates (激活) more areas of your brain than a keyboard does.

Audrey van der Meer, the study’s leader from the Norwegian University, believes that young children should learn to write by hand successfully. This is because writing “gives the brain more chances than typing to hang your memories on”, she explains. Think about it. When we write, our brain needs to think about and get back memories of the shape of each letter. We also need to use our eyes to watch what shapes we’re writing. And we need to control our hands to press a pen or pencil to shape the different letters. All of this uses and connects more areas of the brain.

Along the way, these processes appear to “open the brain up for learning”, says Van der Meer. So learning through only one way — digital — could be harmful, she worries.

Van der Meer also points out that taking notes by hand encourages “visual(视觉的) notetaking”. Rather than typing blindly, the visual notetaker has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be “connected with boxes, arrows, and small drawings”. Drawing images and writing also turn on parts of the brain involved with learning. Writing even activates language areas.

This suggests, Van der Meer says, that when we write by hand, “we both learn better and remember better”. So it’s important for children to learn handwriting in school from an early age.

This study does not suggest giving up digital devices. In fact, it points out, computers and other devices with keyboards have become essential in many modern classrooms. Keyboarding also can be helpful for students with certain special needs (such as if they have trouble using their hands). But nearly all students will benefit from learning handwriting at an early age.

Van der Meer agrees that learning to write by hand is a slower process and requires fine motor skills. But, she adds, that’s good: “If we don’t challenge our brain, we can’t make full use of it.”

16What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

AHow writing and printing activate the brain.

BHow typing involves more brain movements.

CWhy people prefer keyboarding to handwriting.

DWhy handwriting is important to young children.

17The word “essential” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?

    AFamous. BExpensive. CImportant. DTraditional.

18According to the study, which of the following about taking notes is TRUE?

    AIt can develop drawing skills.

    BIt’s good for language learning.

CIt can stop people typing blindly.

DIt’s a must for remembering letters.

19Van der Meer might agree that ________.

Alearning through digital devices is harmful

Btaking notes by hand will be more popular

Cschools will limit time of using computers

    Dchildren should learn handwriting early

    2022·北京大兴·统考二模)

Anyone who walked into a restaurant during the pandemic knows that the QR code is a contact-less(无接触) way to look at a menu. But the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning customers that they need to be extra careful if they’re sent a digitally readable square known as a QR code.

One victim told the BBB that they received a cheating letter about student loan. It contained a QR code that appeared to link to the official Studentaid. gov website. The QR code also helped the letter, which was part of a cheating, appear official.

As the QR codes have become more commonly used, the BBB notes that it has received reports of scammers using the system to their advantage across the United States. “This is much like a phishing scam,” Laura, director of marketing for Eastern Michigan, said. “Just like clicking links, you have to be careful what website you’re opening on your smartphone. If you’ve never heard of the organization or the website where the QR code is supposed to go to, that’s a huge red flag.” She said the use of the QR code by scammers offers another way to steal personal information or get you to download malware(恶意软件) onto your smartphone.

The scammers can now send messages to one or all people in a user’s address book, or even send a payment to where it cannot be recovered, according to the U. S. Army Major Cybercrime Unit. “In some scams, the QR code takes you to a phishing website, where you are required to enter your personal information for scammers to steal,” the BBB warned. “Other times, scammers use QR codes to payment apps or follow a bad social media account.”

Scams can differ, but the scammers want you to scan the code right away. What you need to do, though, is to step back and make sure any information is legitimate(合法的) before you scan the code. Phone the friend or coworker directly to see what they might have sent, and make sure the sender wasn’t hacked.

Adam Levin, an expert, says it’s a good rule of thumb to turn your smartphone off and restart it regularly. “Many forms of malware that live in your smartphone, such as spyware, depend on the device never being turned off.” Levin said.

20What does the writer want to tell us in the first two paragraphs?

AThe QR code is a contact-less way to look at a menu.

BThe QR codes can help some letters appear official.

CThe QR codes now open new doors for scammers.

DThe QR code is a new way of payments.

21The “red flag” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

    Awarning Bloss Csurprise Dmistake

22The writer probably agrees that ________.

Athere are some hidden dangers in QR codes

Bwe should keep our smartphones off at night

Cthe QR codes have led to phishing scamming

Dwe should trust every QR code from our friends

23What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?

ATo tell us not to download malware.

BTo tell us to keep away from smartphones.

CTo tell us to remember to restart our smartphones regularly.

DTo tell us to be careful of what we are scanning with smartphones.

2022·北京东城·统考二模)In America, an increasing number of middle and high schools now require students to serve a certain number of community service hours before they can graduate. And some parents ask their children to do volunteer work year round even if it’s not mandatory(强制性的)at school. Volunteering has important benefits, such as learning new skills and developing responsibility. However, some people question whether community service is worthwhile if students are forced to take part.

Some people say that many teenagers’ schedules(日常安排)are filled with homework and after-school programs, and forcing them to do other activities will make them stressed out. “Adding community service to teenagers’ already crowded schedules makes it feel like an unpleasant and boring task,” says Ellison O’Grady, 15, a student from Bay Head, New Jersey. Other people say that mandatory service will lead students to believe that they should only help others when they receive an immediate benefit in return, and finally discourage them from volunteering later in life.

Teenagers who volunteer are more likely to do better in school and are less likely to get involved in risky behaviors, studies show. They also get social skills and work experience that can pay off later in life. However, if many busy teenagers are given a choice, they would simply skip voluntary service. That’s why requiring community service is important, supporters say. In addition, there is little proof to support that mandatory community service weakens young people’ s motivation(动机)to join in future service. In fact, studies show that mandatory service is connected with strong wish to take part in future volunteering.

As a high school student in New York, Bellamy Richardson, now 18, had to do 75 hours of community service before graduation. At first, she was worried how she could find that much time. But to her surprise, she not only met the service requirement sooner than she’d expected, but also learned a lot, and found that she loved volunteering. Bellamy is now glad that her service wasn’t by choice. “Requiring community service would give other people the chance I had,” she said.

So ask yourself: Would you volunteer if it weren’t mandatory? Could the benefits of volunteering make it worthwhile no matter how teenagers get involved? I suppose community service is something that should be encouraged even if it is just a duty at the beginning.

24Some people are against mandatory community service because________.

Ait has bad effect on students study

Bit makes students worried and bored

Cstudents fall short in their abilities to do it

Dstudents get little immediate benefit from it

25The word “skip” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.

Agive up performing Bget interested in

Chave difficulty in doing Denjoy benefits from

26What can we learn from the example of Bellamy Richardson?

AStudents take part in community service because of strong love.

BSome students don’t have the chances to offer community service.

CMandatory service makes students lose wish to volunteer in the future.

DIt’s possible and beneficial for students to meet schools service requirement.

27What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

ATo express support for mandatory community service.

BTo stress the importance of balancing volunteer work and study.

CTo discuss the influence of volunteer work on students future life.

DTo remind people of the disadvantages of mandatory community service.

    2022·北京顺义·统考二模)

Do you know the proverb “no pains, no gains”? It gives the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It seems that the only way to know if we’re putting in enough work is how much hardship we bear. We are totally taken up with study, shutting ourselves away for a big exam. Is that necessarily true?

When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another idea, we just shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that interest us, rather than make us switch off. Shutting ourselves away can make us learn to hate studying, leading to a situation where, instead of being able to concentrate on our work, we are troubled by how unfair it is that we must study. This can be part of a vicious(恶性的) cycle that traps us into ineffective revision, or poor progress fueling(增加) further annoyance.

Thankfully, working in the company of other people really helps fight against that. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions(分心). It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just lazy company. They constantly try to keep others in conversation. While studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. Of course, it’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people involved in activities where you would rather be playing than studying. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is most likely to end with a new high score game rather than productive revision.

If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you. Besides, we should know friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation. And connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.

37What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

AGood ideas are needed in terms of progress.

    2022·北京西城·统考二模)

The world’s leading researchers are studying our senses. From the connection between taste and smell, to the idea of “scent(气味)training”, there’s so much more than we think to our sense of smell.

Your sense of smell is largely responsible for your ability to taste food. “Flavor(味道)is really an experience that joins what happens on your tongue with smell,” says a professor at the University of York, UK. “When you put something in your mouth, the molecules(分子)go into your nose. Maybe your tongue can tell there’s fat in that chocolate, and that’s something the brain finds very satisfying, but the formal chocolate experience comes from all the molecules going into your nose.”

Women out-perform men when both groups are asked to tell a certain number of scents

That holds true across all age groups. This is because women are better at noticing a smell and better at describing it with language. Research shows that when people were asked to memorize eight scents and were then given a scent test, the women were better able to tell whether or not a scent was one of the ones that had been memorized. Women were also better at recognizing the scents by name.

Your eating habits may change because of the loss of smell

“You think, ‘I remember how this tasted in the past. I guess they don’t have the same tasty tomatoes or meat any more, ’”says a researcher. “But in fact, it’s your sense of smell that may be working less.” Losing the sense of smell is likely age-related or caused by a cold.

The loss of smell may even change people’s eating habits. Some people will lose interest in eating or don’t want to eat with their friends. Others will start eating lots of junk food, spices, salt, to try to make eating more enjoyable.

Scent training might protect our sense of smell

The loss of smell is not the end of the world. Some research suggests that scent training might protect our sense of smell. By breathing in strong smells on purpose for several weeks, people become more sensitive(敏感的)to all scents and improve their ability to smell. Researchers found the MRI brain images of people undergoing scent training got thicker in the parts of the brain responsible for dealing with the role of scent, which means it’s not just a nose that is trained, it’s the whole brain.

41What is responsible for flavor when you eat something?

AThe teeth and brain. BThe nose and tongue.

CThe brain and nose. DThe tongue and teeth.

42What can we know about the sense of smell from the passage?

AScent training can help men smell more things.

BWomen are more creative about naming scents.

CWomen are better than men at recognizing scents.

DBrain training can improve men’s ability to smell.

43Which would be the best title for this passage?

AWhat you smell may not be real BUnlock facts about the sense of smell

CHow to develop a good sense of taste DMore than you think to the sense of taste

    The perfect birthday present

Toby watched the advertisement for the new Super Robot man. It was half man, half machine and could transform into an airplane, a boat, and a racecar.

“Dad! Look!” Toby pointed to the television screen. “That’s what I want for my birthday. Can I get one? Please!”

“We’ll see.” Dad said. “Your birthday is only two weeks away. New toys like this can be hard to find sometimes.”

“Hard to find? But it’s on TV.”

Dad laughed, “That’s what will make it difficult to find. Everyone will be looking to buy it.”

“Everyone?” Toby thought. Well then, he’d tell everyone that he wanted a Super Robot man. Someone would be able to find it then, right?

Before bed, Toby called his grandparents and told them all about the Super Robot man. Then he added a note at the bottom of each party invitation so that all his friends would know he wanted a Super Robot man.

Toby opened it. “Another Super Robot man?”

His father handed him more boxes. Each one had a Super Robot man. Toby laughed. “I guess I got what I asked for.” He handed an action figure to each of his friends. “Now we all have one. Let’s go try them out.”

    “You’re not upset?” Mom asked.

“Why would I be? I got what I wanted, and now all my friends have one too. It was the perfect birthday.”

44What present did Toby want for his birthday?
