He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so much. Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn't take care of the garden. I didn't want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn't think much about the garden. One Saturday morning, my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables. When I gave the salad to him, he said, "Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can't believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden. " I felt a bit guilty. Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and I admitted, "Dad wanted a salad, but the garden was a disaster. I didn't want to disappoint him, so I went to the store. " She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some. I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. "Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better. "Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father's love of gardening. 24. Why did Christine originally promise she would do the gardening?    A. She knew it was important to her father.  B. She was interested in growing vegetables. C. She was asked by her father to do it. D. She wanted to improve her gardening skills. 25. Which of the following was a problem in the garden?    A. The vegetables were lacking in water. B. Animals often dug holes in the garden. C. The plants were given too much water. D. Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots. 26. Why could Christine secretly make the salad by using store-bought vegetables? A. Her mother helped her to buy the vegetables. B. Her father couldn't see the garden's progress. C. Her mother regularly helped her to make a spray.  D. Her father went on a business trip at that time. 27. What did Christine learn through her experience of gardening?    A. Always get ready for a rainy day.   B. Don't be disappointed by bugs. C. Hard work can pay off.           D. Working alone produces results.CCalifornia has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published on Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor. The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percentin parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources. But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt (融雪). Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. 28. What is the second paragraph mainly about?    A. The increasing variety of California big trees.  B. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.C. The distribution of big trees in California forests. D. The influence of farming on big trees in California. 29. Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?   A. Limiting housing development.     B. Banning woodcutting. C. Fire control measures.            D. Ecological studies of forests.  30. What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre?    A. A warmer climate.            B. A longer dry season. C. Inadequate snowmelt.      D. Dampness of the air. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text?    A. Patrick McIntyreGrow More Big Trees in CaliforniaB. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California SoonC. California's ForestsWhere Have All the Big Trees Gone? D. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests? DThe fast spread of the virus has led most Chinese citizens to wear face masks in public to help reduce infections. The Beijing-based Hanwang Technology Ltd. says it has created a new facial recognition system that is the first to effectively identify people even if they are wearing masks. China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition system. The new system is based on the existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. "When wearing a mask, the recognition rate can reach about 95 percent, which can ensure that most people can be identified, " Hanwang's vice president, Huang Lei, said. He added that the system's success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99. 5 percent. However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. "In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is tough, " Huang said. Hanwang is now selling two main kinds of products that use the technology. One performs "single channel" recognition and the other is a "multi-channel" recognition, which can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people "within a second". Huang said officials can use Hanwang's technology to compare images with ministry(部门) records on individuals in order to identify and track people as they move about. The system can identify crime suspects(嫌疑人), terrorists or make reports or warnings, he added. While some citizens have expressed doubt to such tools, more people seem to have accepted the methods as a way to deal with the current health emergency. So far, Huang says most interest in the new system has come from within China. But he sees the interest likely expanding if the virus continues to spread and the use of face masks increases. 32. What is special about the new facial recognition system?    A. It has no relation to the existing tech. B. It can identify people even if they're wearing masks.C. It can record people's temperature. D. It is being used both at home and abroad.  33. According to the passage, the new system will probably be most helpful for _________. A. the Ministry of Public Security      B. colleges and universitiesC. international companies             D. the Ministry of Finance34. What's most people's attitude towards the use of the new system?    A. Uncaring.   B. Disapproving.  C. Supportive.  D. Doubtful. 35. What's the purpose of the passage?    A. To show China's technological advances. B. To advertise a new tech-based product. C. To demonstrate the innovation of China. D. To introduce a newly developed system.第二节   (共5小题, 每小题2, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,在答题卡上将正确选项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Four Simple Ways to Stay Positive Trying to stay positive, both in good times and bad, is a great way to improve your quality of life. Try these four methods on a daily basis. Don't think a lot about negativity. Of course, staying positive hours a day, seven days a week is a bit difficult. Letting things get to you is normal, and it's actually healthy to cry or express frustrations once in a while. It's when those negative moments control your life that your emotional balance is at risk. 36_________ However, don't give that sadness another second in your day. 37 ____________________What you put into your body directly affects how you feel on the outside. Fill yourself with good, healthy foods like fruits and vegetables and limit snacking. Exercise is equally of great importance. Take a few days out of your week for at a least half an hour of activity, and try to stick to it. 38________________Be kind to others. 39______________ Making someone's day a bit brighter not only puts a smile on his or her face, but also yours as well. Remember to smile and treat each person with pity and respect. Good deeds are contagious(传染的), and your positive attitude may spread among others. Take it one day at a time. Being positive isn't an instant thing. It's a steady effort that we follow every hour of every day. 40______________ Instead, focus on living in the moment and doing what you can to make each moment better. A. Eat healthy and stay fit. B. Take your lunch breaks outside. C. Don't worry about what the future may bring. D. Take a few minutes to feel sad and accept what happened. E.
