China is one of the largest producers and consumers of watermelon in the world. And Wu Mingzhu, a schoolmate of Yuan Longping at Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing in the late 1940s, is the unsung hero who has helped make this possible.
“It’s no exaggeration(夸张)to say that about 80 percent of more than 20,000 of China’s new seed types of watermelons and sweet melons at people’s dining tables everyday are the result of great efforts made by Wu and her team over more than 60 years,” said a colleague of Wu’s.
In 1955, Wu voluntarily went to work in Shanshan County, Turpan Basin in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region where working conditions were hard. In 1958, Wu began to promote the modern technology of planting melons among farmers. However, the local farmers who were used to folk planting methods, didn’t seem to take kindly to that. With the help of a famous local melon expert, Wu opened up three acres of wasteland to plant melons according to scientific knowledge. When autumn arrived, local farmers found the melons Wu planted in a scientific way were particularly delicious. From then on, the farmers began to adopt Wu’s scientific growing methods.
Wu’s efforts to grow quality melons began paying off in 1973 when she went to the off-season breeding(培育)base in Hainan. She wanted to develop Hainan as a pilot area so that the south area of China could also grow melons, and realize the dream of three-matured or even four-matured melons. After numerous difficulties, finally in the 80s, the melon variety selected by Wu succeeded. Wu said, “In Xinjiang, there are thousands of science and technology workers like me. They have worked hard for decades on the frontline of agriculture. I’m just one of the ordinary ones.”
Now dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, Wu is often unable to recognize her former colleagues or even her family members who live by her side. But having worked day and night to breed new seed types since the 1950s, she can still remember her melon work.
24. What does Wu’s colleague think of her?
A. Hardworking. B. Brave. C. Kindhearted. D. Considerate.
25. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. Local farmers trusted Wu at first.
B. Wu failed to spread her technology.
C. Wu’s technology worked in Turpan Basin.
D. A local expert improved Wu’s methods.
26. Why did Wu choose Hainan as a breeding base?
A. To attract more watermelon consumers.
B. To earn more money by selling more melons.
C. To guide the local farmers to grow watermelons.
D. To improve the speed and efficiency of breeding.
27. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Wu Mingzhu’s lifestyle. B. A devoted watermelon scientist.
C. Wu Mingzhu’s new discovery. D. The modern technology of melon growing.

There seems to be a lot of talk these days about what is fair, and what is not. Most people tend to believe life should be fair. Some of the 99 % seem to believe life has somehow treated them unfairly, and some of the 1% feel life hasn't treated them fairly enough. My questions are these: What is fairness? Is life fair? Should life be fair?
We clearly have no choice about how we come into this world. We have little choice early in life. But as we grow older, choices abound. I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we attain. Fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind. Our state in life cannot, or at least should not, be blamed on our parents, our teachers, or our society- it’s largely based on the choices we make, and the attitudes we adopt.
Life is full of examples of the uneducated, the mentally and physically challenged people born into war-torn areas, who could have complained about life being unfair, but who instead chose a different path. Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution over complaint.
I agree that challenges exist. I agree that many have an uphill battle due to the severity of the challenges they face. What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world. Rules and orders don't create fairness, but people' s desire and determination can work around most life challenges.
It doesn’t matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. A friend of mine came to this country from Africa in his late teens, barely spoke the language, drove a cab while working his way through college, and is now the president of a technology services firm. Stories such as this are all around us—they are not miracles, nor are they the rare exception. They do, however, demonstrate blindness to the mindset of the fairness.
28. What does the underlined word “abound" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Change fully. B. Remain the same.
C. Exist in numbers. D. Disappear completely.
29. What opinion does the writer agree with?
A. Most of us can influence the results we achieve.
B. Our background determines our choices.
C. People's desire and determination create unfairness.
D. We should depend on fairness to solve all problems.
30. What is the primary purpose of the text? .
A. To promote efforts over complaint.
B. To stress the importance of fairness.
C. To share an inspiring story of a friend.
D. To prove that fairness is a state of mind.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Fairness Is Justice B. Life Is Not Fair-Deal With It.
C. Fairness Comes First D. Fairness Creates Chances
D
Access to green spaces has been found to have many benefits for both physical and mental health and wellbeing. As is reported recently, nearby green areas have been shown to improve children’s breath health and greatly improve the quality of life in large cities.
Researchers from the University of Illinois College conducted a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology to examine any potential links between greenness and academic achievement for schools with mostly low income students. Therefore, 318 public elementary schools in Chicago were included in the study.
“The goal was to see if the greenness-academic achievement relationship holds for poor, urban schools because that’s where it matters,” said Ming Kuo, the leader of the research. “That’s where educators and policymakers are desperately trying to find ways to help kids reach their potential.”
High-resolution aerial imagery technology was used to measure tree and grass cover for each School. The researchers then compared greenness to the academic performance for the schools using standardized test scores for math and reading.
The researchers found that tree cover was a reliable predictor of academic performance, both for reading and math. The more trees there were, the better the standardized test scores were. Other things like the number of students in each classroom, gender ratios(性别比),and the number of bilingual(双语的)students had no influence on test scores or academic performance.
The results showed that having trees outside of a school affected academic performance and that schools considered the most disadvantaged had half the number of trees as the least disadvantaged schools. While the study does not prove any cause and effect between tree cover and academic performance, it does suggest that simply planting more trees in schoolyards across disadvantaged districts may improve academic performance.
“Early math skills are one of the best predictors of later success, not just in math, but in school,” said Kuo. “So what we have here is a very exciting clue that maybe simply greening—planting trees in schoolyards—could potentially have a significant effect on math achievement and school success down the line for these kids.”
32. Why were the schools in Chicago chosen for the study?
A. They were mostly located in remote areas.
B. Their students had no access to green spaces.
C. They had students with physical or mental problems.
D. The majority of their students were from poor families.
33. What affected the students’ reading scores most in the study?
A. The area of green spaces. B. Their math skills.
C. Their native language. D. The size of the class.
34. Which of the following does Ming Kuo agree with in the last paragraph?
A. It’s urgent to reduce the number of students in a class.
B. It’s unwise to connect greenness with academic success.
C. Kids with better math scores enjoy greater success at school.
D. Schools in Chicago should increase their green cover by half.
35. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Many factors can affect students’ test scores.
B. Trees help improve students’ school performance.
C. More greenness at school benefits children’s health.
D. It’s possible to predict students’ success in later life.

根据第二段前几句“We clearly have no choice about how we come into
this world. We have little choice early in life. But as we grow older, choices abound. 该段最后一句中的“it's largely based on the choices we make, and the attitudes we adopt”也说明我们可以做出很多选择。
根据第二段中的“the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we attain”可知,我们大多数人可以支 配自己取得的结果。又根据第四段中的“What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world.”
综合全文,尤其是根据第三段中的“Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution over complaint.”
根据第二段中的“fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind.", 第四段中的“What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world.”和最后一段中的“They do, however, demonstrate blindness to the mindset of the fairness.”可知,作者反对一味追求公平,试图用公平解决所有问题的思维模式;再从文中最后一段第一句“It doesn't matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. ”可知,每个人的出生条件可能 不一样,但作者用朋友的例子说明要直面生活中的不公平。

32.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Researchers from the University of Illinois College conducted a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology to examine any potential links between greenness and academic achievement for schools with mostly low income students.(伊利诺伊大学学院的研究人员在《心理学前沿》杂志上发表了一项研究,研究了以低收入学生为主的学校的学生的生态性和学业成就之间的潜在联系。)”
根据文章第五段“The researchers found that tree cover was a reliable predictor of academic performance, both for reading and math. The more trees there were, the better the standardized test scores were.(研究人员发现,无论是在阅读还是数学方面,树木覆盖率都是学习成绩的可靠预测指标。树越多,标准化考试的成绩就越好。)”可知,绿地面积对学生的阅读成绩影响最大。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段““Early math skills are one of the best predictors of later success, not just in math, but in school,” said Kuo.(“早期的数学能力是未来成功的最好预测指标之一,不仅仅是在数学上,在学校里也是如此,”郭说。)”
根据文章最后一段“So what we have here is a very exciting clue that maybe simply greening—planting trees in schoolyards—could potentially have a significant effect on math achievement and school success down the line for these kids.(因此,我们得到了一个非常令人兴奋的线索:也许仅仅是在校园种树,就有可能对这些孩子的数学成绩和学业成绩产生显著影响。)”
